Around 10% <strong>of</strong> responses <strong>in</strong>dicated a desire to ga<strong>in</strong> more computer skills. This skill may fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />
enhance a cooperative’s ability to improve <strong>the</strong>ir project management, f<strong>in</strong>ancial and market<strong>in</strong>g skills.<br />
However, this is closely related to access to computer facilities and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternet. If cooperatives<br />
cannot afford basic equipment for <strong>the</strong>ir farms, <strong>the</strong>re are few that would be able to afford computers<br />
and <strong>in</strong>ternet connections even if <strong>the</strong>y were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se skills. This is a key area <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tervention<br />
support agencies should be <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
4.1.2.3. Money Management and Bank<strong>in</strong>g<br />
In order to start a cooperative, a basic amount <strong>of</strong> start-up capital is usually<br />
required. In some cases this is used to furnish <strong>the</strong> cooperative with<br />
equipment, <strong>in</strong>puts and <strong>in</strong>frastructure. However, <strong>in</strong> some cases cooperative<br />
members will each br<strong>in</strong>g a contribution <strong>of</strong> some k<strong>in</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> cooperative. In <strong>the</strong><br />
survey conducted it was found that 75% <strong>of</strong> cooperatives required some form<br />
<strong>of</strong> contribution from its members dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cooperative. Of<br />
<strong>the</strong> cooperatives that required contributions from <strong>the</strong>ir members, 95%<br />
required a f<strong>in</strong>ancial contribution with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r 5% hav<strong>in</strong>g members<br />
contribute equipment to <strong>the</strong> cooperative.<br />
75% <strong>of</strong><br />
cooperatives<br />
keep f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
records for<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
The previous sub-section illustrated a strong need amongst cooperatives for greater tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>ancial management. When questioned on whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess keeps records <strong>of</strong> its<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ances, 75% responded affirmatively. This is a positive <strong>in</strong>dicator around f<strong>in</strong>ancial management.<br />
However, <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> sophistication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>ancial record keep<strong>in</strong>g creates a clearer picture <strong>of</strong> how<br />
beneficial <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial record<strong>in</strong>g method is likely to be. Additionally, although 75% is a relatively<br />
large proportion, it <strong>in</strong>dicates that one quarter <strong>of</strong> cooperatives keep no f<strong>in</strong>ancial records whatsoever.<br />
This is a concern as it should be expected that at a m<strong>in</strong>imum cooperatives should keep records<br />
through some form <strong>of</strong> book or receipt collection.<br />
