Research Report: Address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Needs, Opportunities and Challenges <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cooperatives</strong><br />
and Collectively Owned Enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Poultry</strong> and Related Industries<br />
yet did not request assistance <strong>in</strong> barga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for discounts on <strong>in</strong>puts. This illustrates that <strong>the</strong> table<br />
above should be understood with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> perspectives <strong>of</strong> cooperatives as a whole <strong>in</strong><br />
relation to <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir responses.<br />
F<strong>in</strong>ancial management was highlighted above<br />
as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key concerns for cooperatives. It<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore follows that cooperatives would<br />
prefer more tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this area. Figure 4-9<br />
below illustrates which skills cooperatives<br />
would like to obta<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong>ir members.<br />
F<strong>in</strong>ancial management is <strong>in</strong>dicated as <strong>the</strong> area<br />
that most cooperatives mentioned want<strong>in</strong>g<br />
fur<strong>the</strong>r tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Cooperative managers who<br />
have not received proper<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g are unlikely to<br />
understand <strong>the</strong> need for project<br />
management skills and<br />
market<strong>in</strong>g skills despite<br />
challenges <strong>in</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
members and <strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g new<br />
customers<br />
In Table 4-3, above, technical skills were rated relatively highly. Based on this it is surpris<strong>in</strong>g that 24%<br />
<strong>of</strong> responses <strong>in</strong>dicated a desire to improve <strong>the</strong>ir technical skills. A total <strong>of</strong> 14 cooperatives provided<br />
this as a response, equat<strong>in</strong>g to 50% <strong>of</strong> cooperatives believ<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>ir cooperative could benefit<br />
from more tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> technical skills. Therefore, although cooperatives are competent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
technical skills at present, <strong>the</strong>y are aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> benefits <strong>of</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g more <strong>in</strong> this area.<br />
More cooperatives rated<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir skills as ‘very good’<br />
<strong>in</strong> technical skills than<br />
any o<strong>the</strong>r skill category<br />
Similarly, cooperatives see <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
management and would like to ga<strong>in</strong> more competence <strong>in</strong><br />
this skill. However, cooperatives do not necessarily consider<br />
management, market<strong>in</strong>g and o<strong>the</strong>r skills as a necessity and<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore do not value <strong>the</strong>se skills accord<strong>in</strong>gly. Some 16%<br />
<strong>of</strong> responses on a question regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> challenges faced<br />
by cooperatives <strong>in</strong>dicate that <strong>the</strong> cooperatives struggle <strong>in</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g members and 12% that <strong>the</strong>y<br />
struggle with market<strong>in</strong>g skills. <strong>Cooperatives</strong> who have not received sufficient bus<strong>in</strong>ess tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g are<br />
unlikely to understand <strong>the</strong> need for project management skills and market<strong>in</strong>g skills, despite<br />
challenges <strong>in</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g members and <strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g new customers.<br />
