Research Report: Address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Needs, Opportunities and Challenges <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cooperatives</strong><br />
and Collectively Owned Enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Poultry</strong> and Related Industries<br />
<strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> survey. Table 4-2 <strong>in</strong>dicates <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess tools cooperatives surveyed<br />
have <strong>in</strong> place.<br />
The majority <strong>of</strong> cooperatives (85%) had a bus<strong>in</strong>ess plan <strong>in</strong> place. This is a positive <strong>in</strong>dicator that most<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cooperatives had done at least some level <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess analysis and plann<strong>in</strong>g. The existence <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>se documents does not, however, provide any <strong>in</strong>dication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir completeness and ability to<br />
support bus<strong>in</strong>ess establishment and management. However, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g three documents<br />
which <strong>in</strong>dicated bus<strong>in</strong>ess preparedness, 50% or less <strong>of</strong> cooperatives had <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong> place<br />

While all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above documents are important, it is concern<strong>in</strong>g to note that only 46% <strong>of</strong><br />
respondents have a budget <strong>in</strong> place. Without a written budget, it is unlikely that a cooperative will<br />
be responsible and forward plann<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>come. This is fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vestigated under Section<br />

Many cooperatives received support <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess preparation. Figure 4-7 presents <strong>the</strong> proportion <strong>of</strong><br />
support received <strong>in</strong> assistance for each document type. Notable is that although all four document<br />
types received similar proportions <strong>of</strong> support, <strong>the</strong>re is a largely divergent percentage <strong>of</strong> cooperatives<br />
