In one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> survey questions regard<strong>in</strong>g current equipment needs, 79% <strong>of</strong> respondents stated that<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir cooperatives do not have <strong>the</strong> appropriate equipment, tools and mach<strong>in</strong>ery to run <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess;<br />

27 out <strong>of</strong> 28 participants gave a lack <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ances as <strong>the</strong> cause for <strong>the</strong>ir cooperative’s <strong>in</strong>sufficient<br />

equipment, tools and mach<strong>in</strong>ery.<br />

Technical skills, location and access to water and<br />

electricity also featured prom<strong>in</strong>ently as start-up<br />

challenges. Access to <strong>in</strong>formation and support<br />

organisations did not feature as a prom<strong>in</strong>ent start-up<br />

challenge, with only two cooperatives mention<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

problem. However, it should be noted that many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

cooperatives <strong>in</strong>terviewed were contacted through<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g support databases such as SEDA and <strong>the</strong> dti CIS,<br />

and were <strong>the</strong>refore better <strong>in</strong>formed than some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cooperatives regard<strong>in</strong>g support<br />

programmes <strong>of</strong>fer assistance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se areas and many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cooperatives surveyed have received<br />

this type <strong>of</strong> support at some po<strong>in</strong>t dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lifespan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cooperative as is illustrated <strong>in</strong> Section<br />

4.1.2.5 Support and Challenges. Thus, <strong>the</strong>re may have been a lack <strong>of</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> need<br />

for bus<strong>in</strong>ess and f<strong>in</strong>ancial management skills dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cooperative, which has resulted<br />

<strong>in</strong> this challenge be<strong>in</strong>g cited <strong>in</strong> h<strong>in</strong>dsight by cooperatives. Many bus<strong>in</strong>esses may not have sought out<br />

this type <strong>of</strong> assistance dur<strong>in</strong>g start-up if <strong>the</strong>y were not aware that it was a concern. Additionally, <strong>the</strong><br />
