4. <strong>Assessment</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cooperatives</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Poultry</strong> <strong>Industry</strong><br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this section is to present <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong>to cooperatives <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> poultry<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry and provide analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs. This analysis will tie <strong>in</strong> results from <strong>the</strong> various<br />

stakeholder engagements <strong>in</strong> order to provide well-rounded research spann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The below assessment <strong>of</strong> cooperatives and collectively owned enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> poultry <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

presents <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> two sets <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation. The first set <strong>of</strong> research was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a survey<br />

<strong>of</strong> cooperatives. The second set <strong>of</strong> results has been obta<strong>in</strong>ed through <strong>in</strong>terviews <strong>of</strong> larger roleplayers<br />

along <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong> and <strong>in</strong>cludes producers, retailers and chicken fast food cha<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

The survey <strong>of</strong> cooperatives was conducted <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> a greater understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> needs,<br />

opportunities and challenges faced by <strong>the</strong>se cooperatives. These surveys also provided <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> specific forms <strong>of</strong> support cooperatives have received and how this support assisted <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>esses. The survey is comprehensive <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g a picture <strong>of</strong> how cooperatives view <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

situation, opportunities and challenges. The <strong>in</strong>terviews conducted with o<strong>the</strong>r stakeholders along <strong>the</strong><br />

value cha<strong>in</strong> and with <strong>the</strong> Develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Poultry</strong> Farmers Organisation (DPFO) provide different<br />

perspectives and additional <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> cooperatives and collectively owned enterprises<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

This section also discusses <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews conducted with retailers, restaurants and large<br />

producers; all three <strong>of</strong> which play a significant role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> poultry value cha<strong>in</strong>. Interviews with<br />

retailers illustrate <strong>the</strong> barriers to entry <strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g large contracts and highlight where<br />

opportunities may lie for engagement with <strong>the</strong>se potential customers. Responses provided by<br />

chicken fast food cha<strong>in</strong>s similarly identify <strong>the</strong> challenges; and <strong>in</strong>terviews with large producers<br />

identify support provided, potential areas for collaboration as well as challenges faced <strong>in</strong> this<br />

collaboration.<br />

The key f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>terviews are presented below, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> challenges<br />

and opportunities for cooperatives and collectively owned enterprises <strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>se<br />

significant stakeholders.<br />

4.1. Cooperative Analysis<br />

This sub-section describes <strong>the</strong> results obta<strong>in</strong>ed through surveys <strong>of</strong> cooperatives conducted with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> poultry value cha<strong>in</strong> and highlights <strong>the</strong> opportunities and challenges which stem from <strong>the</strong>se<br />

results. The analysis is fur<strong>the</strong>r supplemented by <strong>in</strong>formation obta<strong>in</strong>ed from secondary research<br />

sources perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> characteristics <strong>of</strong> and challenges faced by cooperatives <strong>in</strong> general, as well<br />

as to <strong>the</strong> poultry <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> particular.<br />
