The 42nd Sheffield Garden Walk & Festival was hot stuff!
BY LAURY LEWIS
Everyone knows that an outdoor summer event
is subject to Mother Nature, let alone competition
from other festivals and the economy.
The Sheffield Garden Walk enjoyed fabulous
weather in 2007 and 2009. In contrast, this summer
year has been substantially hotter and rainier than
normal. On Garden Walk weekend, Mother Nature
decided to make us suffer with temperatures in the 90s
and high humidity, not to mention a drenching rainfall
on Sunday. Add to that the continuing economic
downturn and it would have been anyone’s guess as
to the chances of success. So although the weather
this spring and summer has been great for the plants, it
caused a decline in attendance at the Garden Walk.
Despite the oppressive heat, more than 5,000
people viewed the gardens, and all of the select garden
tours and architectural tours were filled. Children were
swarming in Kids’ Corner, patrons enjoyed a more
diverse assortment of food and beverages, and a good
crowd enjoyed a superior lineup of music. This success
simply was not possible without great planning by the
managers and the diligence of our 500 volunteers. As
a result, the Sheffield Neighborhood Association can
continue to fund community projects and beautification
and provide community benefits to schools and other
community organizations.
Over the years, monies from the Garden Walk have
been used to better Sheffield, from improving its public
spaces to supporting the organizations and schools
serving our community. For example, the playground
area at Trebes Park was rebuilt and the balance of the
park was totally renovated, including the baseball
field, the walkways, the wrought iron fencing, and the
garden beds. The monies allow us to continue improving
the plantings at Trebes, as well. In addition,
the beautification planters and banners throughout the
Sheffield neighborhood would not be possible without
the financial support from the Garden Walk. Garden
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY DAN HERMANN
As we enter the fall season and the last
days of summer wind down, it is good
time to reflect on events of the seasons
related to the Sheffield Neighborhood
Association. Please be sure to read the lead article
by Laury Lewis in this newsletter regarding the
Sheffield Garden Walk & Festival. He has provided
a very good overview of this year’s Garden Walk
and all of the elements that comprise a successful
Garden Walk. I echo his comments on thanking all
of our managers, volunteers, and sponsors, as we
could not hold this large volunteer-managed event
each year without them. In particular, I would like
to thank our two co-chairmen for the Garden Walk,
Laury Lewis and Richard Ashbeck, who provided
the leadership for another successful event. We
appreciate the support of and participation by the
Sheffield community for the Garden Walk, as it is
the primary funding source for the Sheffield Neighborhood
Association, as noted by Laury.
Given 43 rd Ward Alderman Vi Daley’s recent
announcement that she will not be running for reelection
next year, I would like to take this opportunity
to thank her for all of her for her time in office
and all of her efforts on behalf of residents of the
Sheffield neighborhood. The SNA has always had
a good communication and working relationship
with Vi and her office. In particular, we would like
to thank her for her support of the Garden Walk
over the years.
As summer winds down, you may have noticed
how bountiful the plants and flowers are in the
100+ wrought iron planter boxes around the neighborhood.
The combination of plant variety and
early summer rain followed by consistent sunshine
and regular watering from our arrangement with
Finkl Landscaping has led to beautiful results. We
have received many compliments on the planter
boxes this year. We can again thank Laury Lewis,
chair of SNA’s Parks and Beautification Committee,
for coordinating and leading this program. The
planter boxes and the program costs are funded by
the SNA from proceeds generated from the annual
Garden Walk.
And finally, as we enter autumn and school
has started for all of the kids in the neighborhood,
our neighbor, DePaul University, will be welcoming
back its students. This annual ritual of classes,
activities, and social life always adds the buzz of
youthful activity to the air. Let’s also welcome those
students into our neighborhood. The DePaul area
will continue to have that much more activity with
the current construction projects underway, which
one more time will further advance the look and
presence of DePaul in the Sheffield neighborhood.
We will continue to update you on the projects in
this newsletter as we receive regular updates from
DePaul University.
PLANNING REPORT
Railroad right-of-way officially abandoned
BY TED WROBLESKI
On June 15, the federal Surface Transportation
Board issued its decision granting the application
of the City of Chicago for the adverse
abandonment of two railroad lines in the
city owned by the Chicago Terminal Railroad (CTR): the
Two win Preservation
Excellence awards
BY TED WROBLESKI
This year, the Commission on Chicago Landmarks
recognized two buildings in the Armitage-Halsted
Landmark District for the outstanding work
done by their owners in the exterior restoration
of those landmark district buildings. The two buildings
are located at 934 and 935 West Armitage, right across
the street from each other at the corner of Bissell and
Armitage. Douglas Shinnick and Rosalia Rebollar were
recognized for the work that they have done on the building
at 934 West Armitage. A local business, Art Effect,
presently occupies the first floor commercial space. For
many years, this building was the location of Shinnick
Drugs. The original detailing, cornices, and cladding of
the corner turret and bay windows of this building had
been removed years ago and replaced with a dark siding
that detracted from the original character of the building.
The non-historic siding has been removed and replaced
with new zinc-metal cladding with a design typical of the
building’s original style and period.
The second award was given to owner Sue Gin and
New Management, Inc., for 935 West Armitage. The
owners replaced the deteriorated roofing with new slate
roofing and did masonry repair, cleaning, and tuckpointing
as well as painting the metal bay windows, taking a
building that was in need of repair, and restoring much
of its original character. As the Commission noted, along
with 934 West Armitage, these two projects demonstrate
the dramatic visual change that can happen when two
corner buildings are restored at the same time.
These projects were among 22 honorees recognized
at a ceremony on September 2 at the Chicago Cultural
Center. Since its creation in 2003, Armitage-Halsted
Landmark District buildings have been among those receiving
Preservation Excellence Awards each year.
Ted Wrobleski is SNA First Vice President and chairs SNA’s
Planning Committee.
railroad line running down Kingsbury from Division to
Willow Street, and the portion of the Lakewood Avenue
line between Clybourn Avenue and Diversey Parkway.
The Lakewood line includes the tracks running through
the Treasure Island shopping center parking lot up to
and past Fullerton to Diversey. The decision was effective
July 16.
While the city and the railroad had apparently
come to an agreement as to the abandonment, there
was one individual objector, a Mr. Andrew Morris,
who as an individual resident of the City of Chicago
objected to the Lakewood line abandonment. The SBT
rejected his objections and granted the application.
See www.stb.gov/decisions. The case docket number is
AB-1036.
According to Alderman Scott Waguespack’s website,
under the agreement between the City and the
Chicago Terminal Railroad, the City has acquired the
right to the CTR rail track located in the City’s right
of way. The CTR has 180 days, until approximately
January 15, 2011, to, at CTR’s election, remove any rail
track located on private property and to salvage such
material. If CTR does not remove such track within that
period, the private property owners shall thereafter have
the right to remove and salvage any rail track located
on such private owner’s property.
The privately owned property between Wayne and
Lakewood from Webster to Belden in particular could
be affected by this decision, as the removal of the
railroad tracks would make this property more suitable
for development. At this point, most of this property is
zoned manufacturing and the intentions of the owner
or owners are not known. The future of the abandoned
railroad right-of-way property will be a subject of
neighborhood interest in the upcoming months.
Walk monies also fund the concerts in Trebes Park and
other neighborhood events. Our community schools
and other social service organizations receive support
that is especially needed, given declining government
subsidies; the beneficiaries of this year’s Garden Walk
earnings will be announced at the end of the year.
Finally, Garden Walk proceeds fund this newsletter and
the Association website, making it possible for SNA to
Thanks to Our Sponsors
Despite the dismal state of the economy, Tom Lawson
in his second year as Sponsors Manager did an unbelievable
job selling our festival and its benefits to a great
group of sponsors. Thanks to all of our major sponsors:
Coors Light and Blue Moon, AT&T, McGee’s Tavern
and Grill, WXRT-FM, Finkl & Sons, DePaul University,
Dentistry for Children and Families, Treasure Island,
Home Depot – Lincoln Park, Charles J. Fiore Nursery,
PNC Bank, Fifth Third Mortgage, and WYCC TV20. Our
festival simply does not exist without their support.
Walk & Festival this year again as Co-Chairmen, supported
by our Executive Committee: Tom Lawson, Patty
Walk & Festival, July 23-24.
Laury Lewis is Co-Chairman of the Sheffield Garden Walk
& Festival with Richard Ashbeck.
Patrons’ and President’s Parties
Brandy Rinehart in her inaugural year organized a successful
Patrons’ Party hosted by Beverly Hammel Kitchen
and Bath. Lanni Guttman again outwitted Mother
Nature by scheduling the President’s Party indoors in
the new McGowan Science Building. Thank you to Fran
Casey and DePaul University for the accommodations
for the President’s Party and for all of DePaul’s assistance
with festival facilities.
Kids’ Corner
Laurie Dombrowski in her second year as Kids’ Corner
Manager put together another terrific assortment of
activities for our neighborhood kids. A special thanks
also to former Kids’ Corner Manager Colleen Sheehan
for her coaching.
Architectural Tours
We again were overwhelmed with visitors wanting to
experience the architectural sights of historic Sheffield.
A perennial thanks to Polly Kelly for organizing the
architectural tours, which were filled to capacity, and to
her hardworking tour guides.
Sheffield Garden Walk Co-Chairmen Richard Ashbeck (l) and
Laury Lewis (r) with Congressman Mike Quigley and 43rd Ward
Alderman Vi Daley.
Gardens and Garden Contest
This year, Jeannie Lawson and I sought out the best
gardens in Sheffield, and we again sponsored a garden
contest for those gardeners with a competitive streak.
Nineteen new gardens were showcased this year. Also
new this year was the enabling garden at the Little Sisters
of the Poor, which was assisted in its design by the
Sheffield Neighborhood Association. A special thanks
to all the garden exhibitors for sharing their beautiful
gardens with our guests.
The garden contest consisted of two categories:
best overall garden and best containers. A record number
of entrants vied for bragging rights and cash prizes.
A panel of expert judges — Mike Nowak, radio garden
personality on WCPT, 820AM; Bill Aldrich, former publisher
of Chicagoland Gardening magazine and garden
book author; and John Eskandari from Gethsemane
Garden Center — provided a comprehensive critique of
the entries. The winners this year were:
Overall Garden
2 nd Place – Sol Elena and Martin Berman
3 rd Place – Headley School Homeowners Association
3 rd Place – Tim Glascott
Music
The music component of our event would not be possible
without the knowledge and contacts cultivated by
Dan Hermann, Bryan Robson, and Malcolm Lambe.
Our headliners, Rusted Root and Cowboy Mouth, drew
large crowds and provided energetic entertainment.
Also well-received were the sounds of Black Joe Lewis
and the Honeybears, Ezra Furman and the Harpoons,
Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, and Hello Dave.
SNA looks back on
summer fun at Trebes Park
SNA sponsored three exciting family events
this summer at Trebes Park. On Thursday,
June 17, the music of St. Jams filled the park.
On Thursday, July 29, jazz vocalist Alison
Ruble performed. Finally, on Thursday, August 19,
we screened the fun film, “Shorts.” SNA hopes you
enjoyed this year’s events. See you next year!
SNA seeks candidates for board of directors
Over the years, the Association has striven to maintain
a board composition that reflects the entire Sheffield
neighborhood, including businesses and institutions
along with residents and property owners. At the same time,
the Association has tried to maintain a mix of experienced
board members and new, and a mix of long-time Sheffield
neighbors and recent arrivals.
At its Annual Meeting in February, the Association members
elect five (of the 15) directors along with each of the six
officers. Directors serve three-year terms; officers serve oneyear
terms. The Nominating Committee soon will begin to
review candidates for the 2011 SNA Board in anticipation of
presenting a slate to the current board at its December meeting.
(Per the Bylaws, members also may nominate candidates
by submitting the name of an eligible member to the Secretary
45 days before the election.)
Any person who is a member in good standing is eligible
to be elected as a director or Secretary, Treasurer, or Assistant
Treasurer. A director in good standing who has served on the
board for one year is eligible to be elected President, First Vice-
President, or Second Vice-President. Any member in good
standing is entitled to vote for directors and officers; new members’
voting rights begin 30 days after joining the Association.
A member must be at least 18 years of age and reside
within the Association’s boundaries, or own property or a business
within the boundaries, or represent a religious organization
or institution within the boundaries. A membership form is
included in each issue of this newsletter and is available on the
SNA website, www.sheffieldneighborhood.org; forms also are
available upon request by calling or sending an email message
to the Association.
If you are interested in serving or know someone who would
be a valuable addition to the board, please contact the Association
by calling 773-929-9255 or sending an email message to the
Association. Those interested should provide a brief resume that
includes a description of any volunteer experience. Keep in mind
that ours is a “working” board, i.e., we need nominees who can
offer both their experience and time.
If you are unable to spare the time commitment required
of an officer or director, or simply want to learn more about the
Association before making that commitment, consider committee
work. Much of the work of the Association is accomplished
via the committees, which make recommendations to
the board. Spreading the work of the Association beyond the
board through its committees eases the burden on directors and
officers and, more important, creates opportunities for broader
participation of SNA membership.
Finally, we need two members to serve on the Nominating
Committee; please contact the Association immediately if you
are interested. Members interested in serving on the Budget
Committee also should contact the Association, attention SNA
Assistant Treasurer Richard Ashbeck.
Award-winning garden to host wine tasting
BY NAOMI TSELEPIS
This spring, the Little Sisters of the Poor transformed
its outdoor space into a blooming
enabling garden with the help of some dedicated
residents and volunteers. Before the
cold weather gets the best of this beautiful garden, they
invite you to a wine tasting on Thursday, September 30,
from 6 pm to 8 pm at 2325 N. Lakewood.
The Little Sisters are proud to have recently won
second place in the Sheffield Garden Contest. “This
enabling garden is very special to us,” says Mother
Patricia, “as it eliminates the physical barriers to
gardening and allows our residents to remain active
while enjoying the beauty of the plants and flowers.”
Chez St. Mary’s: A Taste of France, is sponsored
by The House of Glunz and will feature 12 different
French wines selected by Barbara Glunz for this event.
This will be the first time the Sisters have held a wine
tasting; proceeds from this evening under the stars will
help the Sisters purchase two new therapeutic tubs for
their elderly residents.
Residents enjoy gardening at Little Sisters of the Poor.
Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door and
include live entertainment and hors d’oeuvres. Purchase
by calling (773) 935-9600 or email dvchicago@littlesistersofthepoor.org.
SNA to consider 2011 donation requests
During the annual budgeting process, a subcommittee of SNA’s Budget Committee will
evaluate the donation requests that the Association received throughout the year. To
be eligible for a donation, the applicant must be a not-for-profit group that meets at
least one of the following criteria:
1. It offers programs that provide a needed or useful service to residents of the Sheffield neighborhood.
2. It is located in or near the Sheffield neighborhood and has a history of being a good
neighbor.
3. It offers programs or services that the board of the SNA believes contribute substantially
to the betterment of the larger community or meet a specific need targeted by the board.
In addition, requests must be in writing, offer some background about the applicant, explain
how the request fits the criteria, and describe how and when the applicant will use the funds.
These are neighborhood funds: help the board determine how best to support your neighborhood.
Donation request forms are available by calling the Association at 773-929-9255 or sending
an email request to sheffieldneighborhoodassociation@hotmail.com.
