February is here and I am
celebrating my 49th Birthday
with completing The Huntington
Beach Surf City Half
Marathon on Super Bowl Sunday,
February 7th, 2010. I
know I will have to walk part
of it, but that’s OK, I just want
to complete it.
Last month I sent out two
updates outlining some of the
highlights of 2009 and some of
the changes we have in store
for 2010. Due to the demand
for units in the extended care we are expanding The West Indies
Extended Care again!
We are the first Assisted Living community in the area to
have a Memory Enhancement Program. Please contact myself
or Peggy Sunshine if you would like to know more about this
exciting program that is set to start 5 days a week on Monday,
March 1, 2010 under the direction of Jane
Mahakian, PhD.
I am enjoying our new Resident Council,
our Town Hall Meetings will be held Thursday,
February 4th and Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 10am in The Activity
Center. We go over all the news about what is happening
at San Clemente Villas and we welcome your comments
and beneficial suggestions!

Myrtle & Dick Novak
Richard Novak was born in 1925 in St Louis Missouri. He attended Roosevelt High School. In 1943 Richard
volunteered for the Army Specialized Training Program and Basic Training at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Richard participated in the invasion at Normandy Beach, and engaged in battle at Verdon. Just inside
Germany at the Zaar river, Richard was shot by a German machine gunner at close range and was hospitalized
multiple times due to this injury. Shortly after his final release from the hospital in September 1946
Richard attended St. Louis University, Commerce and Finance School and earned his BA and accounting
degree in 1948. Richard married in 1948 and had three sons and one daughter. From 1949 through 1953
Richard worked for the IRS as an agent and an auditor. Richard worked for several firms initially as an
accountant and then later as a Controller. Richard’s first marriage ended. Several years later Richard met
Myrtle, the love of his life. They met in Chicago at a Parent’s Without Partners meeting. In August of 1967
Richard and Myrtle were married. In 1980 Richard and Myrtle opened a tax and financial consulting business
in San Juan Capistrano. Due to poor health they closed their business in 2007 and came to live in the
Villas in March of 2009. Richard takes advantage of the pool, swimming laps to increase his overall
strength. Richard is happy that Myrtle receives the care she needs in the West Indies and that his health
has improved due to good nutrition and exercise.
On the fourth of July, 1918 Bob Creighton was born in Los Angeles. In 1923 Ruth Bachmeier was born in
Albany New York. After high school, Ruth married Richard Mulcahy and had three children, Bob had 2
children from a previous marriage. Bob had served in World War II as a Commissioned Officer: Second
Lieutenant in the Infantry. He saw active duty in the Solomon Islands, New Zealand, New Guinea, and
the Philippines. At the end of the war Bob worked for Security Pacific Bank working his way up the
corporate ladder until he became a Vice President and Branch Manager at the Beverly Hills branch of
Security Pacific National Bank. In 1962 Ruth married Bob Creighton. Bob described Ruth as a wonderful
homemaker and an accomplished water color artist. Ruth loved to travel. She was Bob’s tour guide
and travel planner as they vacationed in the Greek Islands, France, England, and other European destinations.
She learned enough French to get them out of a few “Pickles”. Bob is happy that he is able to
live comfortable at the Villas and Ruth is able to receive the care she needs in the West Indies section of
the San Clemente Villas.

Happy Valentine’s Day
Harry Mahakian was born January 5, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. His
parents moved the family to Milwakee, Wisconsin where he played
football, ran track, and performed the duties of the basket ball team
manager for Rufus King High School. In 1943 Harry joined the Navy
and was sent to Iowa State College where he majored in Electrical
Studies. He volunteered for sea duty and ultimately was one of 34
electrical engineers assigned to the USS Endymion. This ship was a
machine shop on the water . The crew used the equipment on board
to repair wounded battleships at sea. After his discharge from the
Navy, Harry worked for his father in the family business located in
Rose & Harry Mahakian Milwakee. Harry was invited to the wedding of Ann Sarian, and fell
in love with her beautiful 16 year old sister, Rose Sarian. They married
in 1948 after Rose graduated from high school. Their first child, Linda, was born in 1951. Sari was born
in 1951. In 1955 they moved to California where Janie was born in 1961 and Loren was born in 1965.
Harry worked as an Independent Life and Health Insurance broker out of his Redondo Beach office. Rose
was the office executive managing everything from the paperwork to the telephone calls. Rose and Harry
retired in 1985 and did significant charity and fund raising work for the Little Company of Mary Hospital
in Torrance, California. The traveled to Hawaii, Mexico and Sun Valley, Idaho.
In 1919 Robert Oullette was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. In
1925 Lorna Lomasney was born in Liverpool, England. They met
in 1943 after the British Air Force truck Lorna was driving hit a
patch of ice on the road and tipped over on its side. Robert was
part of a group of RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) airmen who
pulled the truck into the upright position. Lorna, a member of the
British Air Force, said yes when Robert asked her for a date. A year
later Robert (pronounced Ro-bear) and Lorna were married. In
1945 their first child, Lorna Joan, was born in England. In 1947 the
second child, Robert Keith (Bobby), was born in Canada. In 1956
the third child, Kim, was born in Long Beach, California.
After the war, “Roe” and his fellow Royal Canadian Airmen were
Ro & Lorna Oulette shipped back to Canada, while Lorna and her baby were transported
to Canada via the Queen Mary. Throughout their marriage
Roe worked in the automotive service industry from Windsor, Canada to Long Beach, California. Following
Roe’s retirement in 1984, Lorna and Roe enjoyed cruising many locations including the Panama
Canal, Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti. They enjoyed cruising so much that they bought their own
30 foot sail boat. They enjoyed sailing the California coastline visiting Ventura, Catalina, San Diego, and
their home port of Long Beach. When the care of their four bedroom home became too much, their children
helped them search for a new “care-free” residence. The children found the Villas in San Clemente.
Roe and Lorna loved the Villas and now live in their own Villa.
In 1925 Bob Grube was born in Huntington Park, near Los Angeles.
Bob enjoyed playing piano and saxophone in a high school swing
band. Bob studied Mechanical Engineering while attending Stanford
University, and then later the Navy sent Bob to Cal Tech to continue
to his Mechanical Engineering studies. Margo Farquhar, born
in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, moved with her parents in 1934 to
Madison, Wisconsin. Margo moved to Pasadena in 1940 and attended
Pasadena City College. In 1948 Margo met Bob Grube at a
church group meeting of young adults. They dated for a year and
got married on August 5, 1949. In 1950, shortly after the birth of their
first child (Robbie), Margo contracted polio. She recovered and gave
birth in 1952 to Cynthia, Vickie in 1954, and John in 1963. As an engineer,
Bob worked on night-vision technology that enabled U.S.

satellites to provide early warning to protect the U.S. against foreign
missile attacks.
Bob suffered a serious back injury just prior to moving to the Villas. As a result of physical therapy, Bob
now is able to walk. Margo attends both the exercise class with Vicki as well as the brain aerobics. Margo
particularly enjoys the volunteer work that she is doing with her friends at the Villas including knitting
caps for servicemen stationed in Afghanistan, as well as knitting blankets, hats, and booties for children
of service men and women. Margo and her friends also make neckbands filled with cooling crystals to
provide relief from the heat to service men and women stationed over-seas.

Jane L. Mahakian, Ph.D., MFT
Former director of elder care programs at
UCSF for nearly 10 years, Dr. Mahakian is President
of Aging Matters, Inc, a geriatric care management
company in Orange County that specializes in
working with older adults with dementia and their
families. Dr. Mahakian has a doctorate in Clinical
Psychology and is a licensed Marriage and Family
Therapist. Since its inception in 1998, Dr. Mahakian
conducts evaluations, provides solution based counseling,
and behavioral interventions for people with
memory loss. She also develops care plans and implements
these plans to optimize the life of the person
with a dementia. She also helps families select the best alternative living
situation or coordinates quality in home care, which allows the person to live
safely in their own home.
In addition, Jane works as a consultant to developers planning new dementia
communities; provides training classes for staff members in assisted living/dementia
communities, and conducts seminars and presentations to corporations
in the area of elder care planning.
Dr. Mahakian is a certified member of the National Association of Geriatric
Care Managers and serves as a Board Member for the Armenian Eyecare Project.
She is founder of the Cognitive Impairment Resource Council of Orange
County. Jane is also USA representative for the Alzheimer’s Association of
Armenia.
