and Newly Diagnosed. A form of structured education for<br />

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) A life threatening acute complication of diabetes caused<br />
by the build up of by products of fat breakdown called<br />
ketones. This occurs when glucose is not available as a fuel<br />
source for the body so fat is used instead.<br />

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate. Flow rate of filtered<br />
fluid through the kidney estimated by formulas using a<br />
blood test result.<br />
The branch of medicine that deals with the study of the<br />
causes, distribution and control of disease in population.<br />
General Medical Services. The contract under which NHS<br />
GPs work.<br />
General Practitioner. A medical practitioner who treats<br />
acute and chronic illnesses and provides preventative care<br />
and health education for all ages and both sexes. They<br />
have particular skills in treating people with multiple health<br />
issues.<br />
Glycosylated Haemoglobin. A test that sums up how well<br />
controlled diabetes had been in the previous three to four<br />
months.<br />
Home Blood Glucose Monitoring. Test carried out by<br />
people with diabetes required to self monitor their blood<br />
glucose levels in order to adjust their insulin dosage.<br />
Health Department Letter. Letter issued by the<br />
government’s Health Department containing guidance<br />
designed for Health Boards.<br />
Health Improvement, Efficiency, Access, Treatment target.<br />
Performance management system which sets out the<br />
targets and measures against which NHS Boards are<br />
publicly monitored and evaluated.<br />
