We received a heavy snowfall (30 cm, 10”) on November 10 th
that brought a sudden end to any outdoor nursery work and the
landscape season. This snow sealed in our overwintering blankets
which have become our main means of overwintering container
plants. Most of our customers consider it has been a good year,
especially the spring season, but the fall was cut somewhat short
with rain. Our assessment would be about the same in that
moisture was needed but fall digging was more difficult. We are
busy grading the finest crop of liner trees we have ever produced
and we have been pleasantly surprised by the strong demand for
liner trees, particularly the new cultivars, in a slow market for
caliper tree growers.
Some of you probably wonder what our field, delivery and
greenhouse staff keep busy at in the winter season. Because we
have adequate cold storage and grading area we can size and
bundle nursery stock in relative comfort until finished in mid
December. The greenhouse staff will be off from December 15 th
until greenhouse start up in February, Our heated shop allows us
to service all our extensive equipment during winter so that it is
fully serviced for spring. Staff also construct new tracking trailers,
tree dollies and other equipment some of which we sell to other
nurseries and city parks departments to enable them to
mechanize. Office staff is busy with order confirmations, sales
and inventory. Overall it enables us to provide key staff with year
round work which we have found to be the essential element in
staff retention.
The office will be closed from December 19 th until January 3 rd but
during that time we will complete essential quotes and answer
urgent inquires. Our family and staff wish you and yours all the
best in 2013. May the blessing of God be with you.
New Choices for Prairie Privacy Screens
By Philip Ronald
Skybound
Purple Spire
The privacy screen is becoming an increasingly important feature along the
boundaries of urban residential lots. As the size of building lots has shrunk
there is less opportunity for the large, backyard shade trees used by past
generations. However the need for a perimeter screen that will provide
shade and privacy has never been more obvious.
In the past, choices for privacy screens in zones 2 and 3 included Swedish
Aspen and Tower Poplar. These fast-growing trees would spring up and
produce vertical walls of summer foliage. Sadly, the arrival of Bronze Leaf
Disease has limited their future usefulness in the prairies. We must look
elsewhere for suitable landscape plants that will fill this void.
Columnar selections of eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis) have always
been prized as accents and privacy screens. Where munching deer are not
an issue and ample moisture is available, this evergreen species forms an
outstanding year round screen. The cultivar Skybound, originating from
Boughen Nursery in Valley River has become the gold standard for pyramidal
cedar. Compared to long-time favorite Brandon, Skybound is more resistant
to winter browning. Furthermore, its dense whorls of dark-green foliage
shed snow off the exterior preventing unwanted splaying of the crown.
When it comes to deciduous privacy screens, columnar flowering crabapples
are an ideal choice. Recent introduction such as Purple Spire ® and Emerald
Spire ® combine dense upright crowns with longevity in the landscape.
Purple Spire is one of the original seedlings resulting from the cross Wijcik x
Thunderchild, made by Dr. David Lane of Summerland. It’s foliage is a rich
purple from late July to mid October. Emerald Spire ® is a cousin to Purple
Spire ® with enhanced vigor and flowering. This new cultivar offers abundant
pink spring flowers, dark-green foliage throughout the growing season.
For spring 2013, ask us about special volume pricing on container-grown
stock of Skybound Cedar and Purple Spire ® Columnar Crabapple.
Fibre Grow Pots
By Stephan Dolder
I would like to introduce a new user-friendly product for the garden centre:
5 and 6 foot Baby Blue Spruce and Black Hills Spruce in Fibre Grow Pots. These
field grown spruce are machine-dug in spring and placed in a 22” x 19” fibre
pot surrounded by a wire basket. The basket has wire handles to carry and
plant the spruce. A lower weight makes it more convenient to handle than a
typical wire basket (WB). The flat bottom should make it more stable in your
display area and the 3” rim lip makes for easier watering then a WB product.
For fast unloading at your location, we can ship four trees to a pallet.
Conclusion: a friendly product to handle, to display and to water!
Planting a fibre pot is a bit different then a WB product. We are working on a
flyer with planting instructions you could use for your customers. In addition,
we will have all the information available on our website for spring. This new
product line will be available in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for 2013. If
everything runs successfully, we are planning to have it ready for all the
prairie provinces in time for 2014.
It will be interesting to hear your feedback next year. In the meantime, we are
working hard to come up with more new products for your business.
Campfire Canadian Artists Rose
By Bob Osborne - Corn Hill Nursery
Campfire rose was named to honor a painting by the famous Canadian artist Tom
Thomson, a member of the Group of Seven. The painting, also called Campfire,
shows a fire burning in front of a tent lit inside by a brilliant yellow light. It is a
masterpiece of design and colour. The rose Campfire is afire with the same
smoldering blend of yellows and reds.
Campfire rose has been tested across Canada and has been found to be
exceptionally hardy. It is rated as a Zone 3 plant, meaning it can take
temperatures of -35 to -40C with very little damage.
The branching on this plant is at 45 degrees giving it both height and width. It
covers the ground quickly yet has enough height to be used as a high ground
cover or low shrub. The stems are smooth with only the occasional short thorns,
making it easy to work with.
The foliage of this lovely rose is a deep glossy green with delicate red edging and
reddish petioles, the structures that attach the leaves to the stems. It is among
the most disease resistant of any hardy rose, giving a bright, fresh, rich look to
the plant all season.
Displayed on this beautiful backdrop are the flowers, and oh what flowers! The
blossoms, containing 20 petals, begin as shapely buds with yellow and red tones.
The flowers open yellow, edged in a deep rosy pink. Some flowers in the early
season will be nearly all yellow, gradually developing pink edging. As the season
progresses the pink edging becomes more prominent. The total effect is
absolutely stunning and unlike any other rose, a harlequin among hardy roses.
Campfire is a true continuous bloomer. Once blossoming commences in early
summer there are flowers on the bush till hard frost. Even very late in the
season the plant is completely covered in new blooms. Very few roses can boast
such prodigious production and almost no hardy roses have that kind of impact.
This promises to be one of the most important rose introductions in the long
history of Canadian rose breeding.
