A new prairie-hardy cultivar of Rosybloom crabapple with upright branching, purple foliage and improved<br />
resistance to apple scab.<br />

Growth Rate:<br />
A moderately growing, small ornamental tree. Mature height is 6 m (20 feet) with a<br />
spread of 3 m (9 feet).<br />

Description:<br />
An attractive rosybloom crabapple with a stately appearance, dazzling glossy bronzepurple<br />
leaves, a profusion of bright pink flowers, small reddish-purple colored ornament<br />
tal fruit, and a neat, upright crown form. <strong>Gladiator</strong> has a high resistance to disease and<br />
looks lush all growing season long. A very unique feature of this tree is the formation of<br />
bole like bumps on it's trunk, once it attains a diameter of over 5 cm (2 inches)..<br />

Culture:<br />
Grows best in full sunlight or partial shade. Prefers well drained, medium<br />
textured soils with adequate moisture.<br />

No specific problems.<br />

Landscape Value:<br />
Excellent ornamental tree for space-challenged sites. <strong>Gladiator</strong> ® will perform well under<br />
powerlines or as a small, boulevard tree with four season ornamental value.<br />

Propagation:<br />
Budding on <strong>Crabapple</strong>. Propagation by softwood cuttings may also prove successful.<br />

Sales Potential:<br />
<strong>Gladiator</strong> ® is a replacement for Thunderchild <strong>Crabapple</strong> in regions where apple scab has<br />
become a persistent problem. It’s upright growth habit and glossy purple foliage may also<br />
allow it to fill the void left by Shubert Cherry in the presence of black knot.<br />
