Mustang® Prunus Rootstock
Prunus x ‘Jefchum’
Jeffries Nurseries Ltd. has been working for 20 years on a clonal rootstock that would be
compatible with Prunus selections including fruiting plums, ornamental plums, apricots and
possibly peach. Hybrid seedlings of cherry-plum (complex salicina/americana/besseyi) were
evaluated for root anchorage, suckering of root and crown, propagation ease from hardwood/softwood
cuttings and wide compatibility.
‘Mustang’ is a complex Prunus hybrid with demonstrated potential for wide use as a clonal
understock. It has proven effective for budding various Prunus cultivars (both fruiting and
ornamental types) throughout North America. It is bud compatible with P. armeniaca
(Apricot), P. salicina (Japanese Plum), P. Americana (American Plum), P. persica (Peach) and
possibly other related stocks including Thundercloud.
