You may be interested to hear that I have been
rewarded for my ‘proof‐reading’ by the makers of
Mr Brain’s Pork Faggots.
The text on the packaging of a new product was
so full of mistakes that I thought it might be bo‐
gus, even though I bought it at a reputable shop.
The red faces department replied that it was the
real thing, and so far nobody else had remarked
on the mistakes. The packaging is being revised
but there are still several hundred examples out
there. Incidentally, they sent me a fiver by way of
thanks!
Joey’s creed
When he was interviewed in 1946 as headmaster,
he cited the creed he followed:
“The happiness of a school is more important
than its work, and its spirit depends on the will‐
ingness of its staff to interest themselves in the
many activities – clubs, camps, and music—
making the school a real community of manifold
interests.”
There are thousands of High School old boys who
will attest to his success.
Head honoured
In May 1979 – 25 years ago this month— the first
Principal of Scarborough Sixth Form College and
previously, the last headmaster of Scarborough
High School for Boys –Percy Alec Gardiner –was
honoured at a retirement dinner given by the Old
Scarborians Association.
His nickname among pupils was ‘the Head Gar‐
dener’.

Many thanks to all those members who have
been in touch with good wishes since hearing of
my recent health problems.
Luckily, this edition of Summer Times was virtu‐

ally complete before I was taken into hospital,
and on my return I was able to finalise the last
three pages.
If your contribution has not yet appeared, I
apologise, but I hope to have things back to nor‐
mal for the November 2004 edition.
