They exchanged details ant agreed to travel from their homes in Bournemouth and Worcestershire to Scarborough to reminisce about the “good old days”. The men, who saw each other last when they were 15, admitted they were real tearaways as pupils. “We were terrors,” said Mr Lancaster. “We were always playing up the teachers.” Mr Beaumont added, “I used to sneak out of class by climbing through the window and then come back in through the door to con‐ fuse the teachers.” So did they recognise each other after so many years? “I saw a chap sitting no a bench waiting and I went up to him and asked him if he was Roger. “I explained I was waiting for a friend I had‐ n’t seen for 50 years. He was a bit offended and said he wasn’t even 50! “But then I saw Roger walking along and I recognised him straight away. I just knew it was him. 50 years hadn’t changed him.” The pair, who worked at Jaconellis ice cream parlour at weekends and in the holidays dur‐ 58 ing their school days, had agreed to meet for dinner, along with Ted’s wife Pat, but they got on so well they ended up spending the day together. They revisited their old school, which is now part of Yorkshire coast College, and were delighted to be offered a guided tour. “It took us right back to our school days,” said Ted. “It was wonderful to see the place being used, even though it was all quite different.” Ted’s wife Pat said, “It has been lovely, it was so interesting to see where Ted and Roger used to go to school and I’ve really felt a part of it which is really nice.” Mr Lancaster, who works as a private tutor, and his wife regularly visit family in Scarbor‐ ough, and Mr Beaumont, who is a quantity surveyor, has returned to the town a few times. But neither has returned to their old school before. “It has been really emotional.” Said Mr Lan‐ caster. “A fantastic day, it has been really good. “We have been talking about going to Bournemouth to visit Roger and meet his wife Janet. We will definitely keep in touch from now on.”
