CANISIUS RESUMES LEAGUE PLAY AT AIC
The Griffs return to Atlantic Hockey competition, traveling to Springfield, Massachusetts to
play AIC. Canisius played Hockey East foe Merrimack to a tie last weekend and is now 1-2-2
this season. The Yellow Jackets enter the weekend with a record of 0-4-0.
CONACHER CAN’T BE KEPT OFF THE SCOREBOARD
4Five games into the season, opponents are finding out you can't keep sophomore Cory
Conacher completely off the scoreboard.
4Conacher leads the Griffs with seven points and four goals this season. He has recorded at
least one point in all five games this season. The five-game scoring streak is the longest of
his short career.
4The sophomore has been especially strong when the Griffs need him most. Conacher
scored two short-handed goals in the Griffs’ victory over CCHA foe Ferris State and he also
posted a point in two game-tying goals during the third period.
4Conacher currently ranks sixth in Atlantic Hockey in points and fourth in goals.
HUDSON GETS OFFENSIVE
4Junior defender Carl Hudson has proven
that offense is his specialty.
4Hudson ranks second on the team this
season with six points and three goals.
4His 1.20 points per game rank second in
Atlantic Hockey and fifth nationally by
blue liners. Additionally, Hudson’s three
goals rank fifth in the league overall and
are the second-most in the NCAA among
defenders.
4Hudson has been a proven scorer since his
arrival at Canisius. He has totaled 39 points
during his career, notching 19 goals and 20
assists.
4The junior is just three points shy of Canisius’
Hudson in the Division I Record Book
standard.
4The secret to Hudson’s success is the power play. He has scored 73.7 percent of his career
goals with the extra-man advantage (14-19). His 14 career power-play tallies are fourth in
the program’s Division I history.
4Hudson has tallied five of his six points this season on the power play. His five man-up
points lead Atlantic Hockey, while his two power-play goals rank seventh nationally.
LOEWEN STEPS UP IN THE CLUTCH
4If an opponent plans on beating the Griffs with junior Andrew Loewen in net, then plan
on scoring early.
4Through four games this season, it has become more difficult as the game progresses to
get a puck past the junior goaltender. Loewen has posted a GAA of 3.75 in the first period,
2.35 in the second and 0.76 in the third. In addition, his save percentage improves from
.907 in the first to .944 in the second and .979 in the final period.
4For the season, Loewen leads all Atlantic Hockey goalies and ranks 12th nationally with a
save percentage of .944. He also ranks second in the league and 21st in the NCAA with a
goals against average of 2.17.

CANISIUS - AIC SERIES
4In a series that dates back to the 1992 season, Canisius holds 17-13-2 advantage in the series,
including a 17-12-2 edge in Division I matchups. The Griffs’ 17 victories at the Division I level
against the Yellow Jackets are the most versus any team.
4However, AIC has controlled the series recently. The Griffs have lost the last four meetings to the
Yellow Jackets, including the opening round of the 2007 Atlantic Hockey Tournament. AIC is 6-2-
1 against the Griffs in the last nine contests.
4Canisius has also lost its last four games at AIC with its last victory coming on Feb. 5, 2005.
4AIC swept two games at Springfield last year, defeating the Griffs 3-1 and 4-2. Josh Heidinger
posted a point on all three of the Griffs’ tallies, scoring two goals and adding an assist.
ABOUT THE YELLOW JACKETS
4AIC is still in search of its first victory of the season. The Yellow Jackets opened the year at the
Maverick Stampede in Omaha, falling to host Nebraska-Omaha and Quinnipiac, 4-1. AIC was
then swept by Atlantic Hockey foe Air Force last weekend, losing by scores of 5-2 and 3-1.
4Three players have posted two points on a goal and an assist this season to lead the Yellow
Jacket offense – senior Chad Richardson plus freshmen Nielsson Arcibal and Michael Penny.
Junior Mike McMillan led the team in scoring last season, posting 24 points on eight goals and
16 assists.
4Senior Tom Fenton and sophomore Dan Ramirez have split time in goal this season. Fenton
owns a goals against average of 3.50 and a save percentage of .877, while Ramirez has posted a
goals against average of 4.04 and a save percentage of .906.
MERRIMACK RECAP
4The Griffs took a break from league play to square off against Hockey East foe Merrimack on
Sunday. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw.
4Junior Carl Hudson tallied a power-play goal in the third period to knot the game at one.
4Sophomore Cory Conacher and junior Josh Heidinger each posted assists. Conacher extended
his career-best point streak to five games, while Heidinger moved into a tie for ninth in Canisius’
Division I history with 66 career points.
4Junior Andrew Loewen stopped 29 shots to earn the draw, including the last 27 he faced.
HEIDINGER LOOKS TO CONTINUE CLIMB UP CANISIUS RECORD BOOK
5. Rob Martin (2000-04) 51
4Heidinger has consistently led Canisius during his 6. Corey Lucas (1998-02) 48
tenure. He has accumulated 66 career points on Josh Heidinger (2006- ) 48
18 goals and 48 assists. His 66 points are tied for
ninth in Canisius’ Division I record book, while his 48 assists are tied for sixth.
4The junior is currently on pace to break the program’s record for career points. Heidinger is on
pace for 123 career points, four more than the 119 David Deeves recorded from 1998 to 2002.
KOSTUCH STRONG TO BEGIN CAREER
4Freshman Dave Kostuch has wasted no time getting settled in the Griffs’ offense. Through just
five games this season, the rookie has posted three goals.
4Kostuch scored a goal in his first collegiate game, helping the Griffs to a 5-2 victory over Ferris
State. He then added two third-period scores in a 5-4 defeat to Holy Cross.
4The Richmond Hill, Ontario native currently ranks third among Atlantic Hockey freshmen with
three points and 30th nationally with 0.60 points per game.
4Kostuch’s three goals also rank fifth in Atlantic Hockey plus second nationally among rookies.
SHORT-HANDED SUCCESS
4Opponents should be worried when going on the power play this season. Through just four
games this season, Canisius has already tallied three short-handed goals.
4The Griffs’ three short-handed goals are tied for the most in the country this season. Boston
College, Minnesota State and Northeastern have also scored three times while on the penalty
kill.
4Sophomore Cory Conacher scored two short-handed goals in the Griffs’ 5-2 victory against Ferris
State to open the season. Freshman Dave Kostuch also added a short-handed tally against Holy
Cross.
4The three man-down goals is just one shy of the Griffs’ total from last season.
WEEKS TALLIES 50TH CAREER POINT
4Junior Jason Weeks is a proven scorer with the Griffs.
4Weeks currently ranks fourth on the team with five points, registering a goal and four assists.
4The junior led the team in goals during each of his first two seasons. He notched 15 goals during
his rookie season and added 12 scores as a sophomore. His 15 goals as a freshman are tied for
the third most in Canisius’ Division I history.
4Against Holy Cross, Weeks tallied his 50th-career point on a game-tying assist. For his career, the
Seattle, Wash. native has posted 51 points on 28 goals and 23 assists.
4Weeks is currently on pace to set the program’s Division I career scoring record with 54 goals, five
more than David Deeves scored from 1998 to 2002.
SCARSELLA PREPARES WITH THE SABRES
4Vincent Scarsella spent his summer preparing for his sophomore season with a little help from
the Buffalo Sabres.
4Scarsella participated in the Sabres Developmental Camp during the offseason after a solid
rookie season with the Griffs where he led the team in scoring (9g, 22a).
4The Sabres Director of Scouting Kevin Devine stated about Scarsella and the Griffin program:
“They’ve got a kid [at Canisius], Vincent Scarsella, who is a pretty good player. He is on the radar,
and you know what it does is if scouts say we’ve got to see this kid in Canisius and you go down
there and you say ‘this is a pretty good league. We should get watching it a little bit more.’ I
think it’s going to give a little bit more attention to those places.”
4Scarsella has posted five points during his sophomore season, recording a goal and four assists.
KEEPING IT CLEAN
4One reason for the Griffs’ success this season is their ability to stay out of the penalty box.
4Canisius led the country last season with 21.6 penalty minutes per game. However, this season,
Canisius has shaved eight minutes off and is currently averaging just 13.6 penalty minutes per
contest. Only 10 teams have averaged fewer penalty minutes this season.
4The Griffs have been whistled for fewer penalties in each of their five games this season then
their opponents. In Canisius’ game against Holy Cross, the Griffs were not called for one penalty
for only the second time in school history.
4Staying away from the penalty kill is key for Canisius. The Griffs are 1-0-1 this season when
allowing zero power-play goals.
GRIFFS STRONG IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
4Canisius has enjoyed some non-conference success this season
against teams in conferences that usually prove to be difficult.
4The Griffs’ victory at Ferris State to begin the year was the first for
Canisius against a CCHA school. The Griffs entered the game 0-8-
3 all-time against CCHA foe.
4The win marked the first for Canisius against not only a school in
the CCHA but a school from one of the four original conferences
(CCHA, ECAC, Hockey East and WCHA).
4Canisius then followed with a tie against Merrimack, 1-1. The draw was the second point for the
Griffs against a Hockey East opponent (now 0-5-2 all-time).
4The Griffs are currently 1-1-1 in non-conference play. Canisius still has out of league games
against Niagara (CHA) and Clarkson (ECAC).
LOEWEN, SPECIAL TEAMS LEADS GRIFFS TO SEASON-OPENING VICTORY
4The key to the Griffs’ season-opening victory against CCHA foe Ferris State was strong goaltending
and special teams.
4Andrew Loewen stopped 50 shots against the Bulldogs, including the last 39 he faced. The
junior was named Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week for his effort.
4Loewen’s 50 saves against Ferris State were the most by a Griff since he set a school record with
61 saves against Miami on Oct. 14, 2006.
4The weekly honor was the seventh for Loewen during his career. He was named the Atlantic
Hockey Goaltender of the Week four times last season, tied for the most in the league.
4Canisius also utilized strong special teams to earn the victory. The Griffs tallied two power play
goals, while sophomore Cory Conacher added two short-handed scores.
4The Griffs also held the Bulldogs without a power-play goal, killing all six extra-man chances.
The +4 on special teams was the best for Canisius since also going +4 on special teams against
Bentley on Nov. 12, 2005 (6 ppg, 2 ppa).
MOSER DOES DOUBLE DUTY
4Freshman Scott Moser will not only be competing for the Canisius hockey team this season, but
the freshman will also be a member of the golf team while hockey is in the offseason.
4Moser has competed in two events with the Griffs this season, finishing 14th at the Bucknell
Invitational and fifth at the Little Three Classic.
4The Tonawanda, N.Y. native earned All-Niagara Frontier honors five times during high school and
was elected Team MVP on four occasions.
4Moser made his collegiate hockey debut in the Griffs’ finale against Holy Cross.
Dave Smith
Head Coach • Fourth Season • The Ohio State University ‘92
Dave Smith is in his fourth season as head coach of the
Canisius College hockey program and 11th season as a
coach at the Division I Level.
In his first three seasons leading the Golden Griffin
program, Smith has guided numerous student-athletes to
success both on and off the ice. The Griffs have collected
athletic honors and academic honors as well as enjoying
successful careers after graduation. The highlights include:
• Seven Griffs have signed professional contracts after playing under Smith at Canisius, including
Kyle Bushee and Bryce Luker following the 2007-08 season.
• Smith mentored David Kasch to Atlantic Hockey Best Defensive Forward honors. Kasch was
the first Griff to earn a postseason individual award since the 1999-00 campaign. In addition,
one freshman in each of Smith’s first three seasons has been selected to the Atlantic Hockey
All-Rookie Team.
• Smith’s first full recruiting class earned 12 league honors during the 2006-07 season, including
10 Rookie of the Week honors, which were the most of any Division I school in the country.
His second recruiting class earned three weekly honors and included the top two freshmen in
Atlantic Hockey in points per game.
• The Griffs have set or tied six school records under Smith’s leadership, including four during the
2007-08 season highlighted by Josh Heidinger, who matched the program record by scoring
in six-consecutive games, and Andrew Loewen, who set a Canisius mark with a 201-minute
shutout streak, the 10th-longest in NCAA history. Both players were honored as Atlantic
Hockey Player of the Month and Goaltender of the Month, respectively, for their achievements.
• In his three seasons, 39 Griffs have earned Atlantic Hockey All-Academic accolades, including
15 following the 2007-08 campaign. In addition, Max Buetow was named the Atlantic Hockey
Top Scholar Athlete in 2005-06 for owning the top GPA in the league and four have been
named to the league’s Academic All-Star Team for having the highest GPA’s at their respective
positions.
Smith became the program’s third head coach on April 15, 2005 after serving the previous three
seasons as the associate coach and recruiting coordinator at fellow Atlantic Hockey member
Mercyhurst College. Smith also spent time as an assistant coach with Bowling Green and Miami.
During his tenure as an assistant coach, Smith coached or recruited:
• Two Hobey Baker Award Finalists
• Four Players of the Year
• Two Rookies of the Year
• 16 all-league award winners
• Three Terry Flanagan Award Winners for Perseverance
The Arthur, Ontario, native was also instrumental in guiding Mercyhurst to two league
championships and two NCAA Division I Tournament appearances in his three seasons with the
Lakers.
Smith graduated from The Ohio State University in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism/
public relations and was a four-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes. Smith finished his career at
Ohio State with 140 points, ranking 14th all-time. He was selected as team captain as a junior and
chosen as the team’s MVP as a senior, while leading the Buckeyes with 41 assists and 63 points.
After graduating from Ohio State, Smith spent six seasons in professional hockey, including five
full seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) and the International Hockey League (IHL) and
a brief period in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). He was under contract with the New York
Rangers in 1994-95. Smith has spent his summers coaching young players and adults as a director
and head instructor at numerous camps across the United States and Canada.
