HEAD COACH MIKE RAPPL
Mike Rappl enters his 29th season as the
Golden Griffins’ head softball coach, making him
the senior-most member of the Canisius College
athletic department staff. In his time at the helm
of the program, the 1977 graduate of the College
has compiled an overall record of 651-362-2 to
go with a 257-77 career mark in Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference play. Under Rappl’s direction,
the Griffs have earned 11 MAAC regular
season crowns, 10 MAAC Tournament championships
and nine trips to the NCAA Division I
Softball Tournament.
By claiming the 2007 MAAC championship,
the softball program earned its ninth
NCAA Tournament berth in the last 14 years,
which stands as the most for any team at Canisius.
The Griffs’ 2007 postseason saw the Blue
and Gold travel to the Columbus, Ohio Regional,
where the team played No. 13 Virginia Tech and
eventual regional champion Cal State Fullerton.
Rappl is the only softball coach in the
history of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
to reach the 600-career win plateau, a feat
he accomplished March 3, 2006, when the Griffs
beat Memphis 2-0. The softball team posted a 28-
23 record in 2006 en route to the program’s 10th
MAAC regular season title and 16th appearance
in the MAAC Tournament.
Under Rappl’s direction, the Griffs
recorded 14 straight 20-win seasons from 1989-
2002, seven 30-win seasons and 22 consecutive
winning campaigns from 1981-2002. Rappl’s 651
career wins ranks him in the top 30 among active
Division I softball coaches and his .646 winning
percentage ranks in the top 15 among active Division
I coaches.
In his time as head coach, Rappl has
been named the MAAC Coach of the Year six
times, and his student-athletes have received
numerous national, regional and league accolades
as well. Since 1980 nine players have earned national
recognition for their play on the field and
work in the classroom, 10 have received
regional honors and 32 players have been
honored as All-MAAC selections. Of
those 32 all-league honorees, four have
been named the MAAC’s Player of the
Year, four have been named the conference’s
Pitcher of the Year and one player
has been recognized as the MAAC Rookie
of the Year. Additionally, 10 Griffs have
been recognized as the MAAC Tournament’s
Most Outstanding Player. In 2007,
Canisius pitcher Courtney Piar became
the third player in school history to earn
Pitcher of the Year and MAAC Tournament
MOP awards in the same season.
Since joining the MAAC, the Griffs
have played in 17 MAAC postseason
events in 18 years, with the team advancing
to the championship game 14 times.
Canisius is the only team in conference
history to come out of the loser’s bracket
to claim the league’s title, having won
three games on the final day of the tournament
in 2002, 2004 and 2005.
On the national stage, Canisius has
Mike Rappl, joined by Pam Ambiel, member of the WNY
Softball Hall of Fame Board of Directors, was inducted to
the WNY Softball Hall of Fame last November.
played the No. 1 ranked team three times, meeting
Arizona in Tuscon, Ariz., 1994, UCLA in
Los Angeles in 2000 and No. 1 Michigan in Ann
Arbor, Mich., in 2005. Rappl holds the honor of
being the only MAAC softball coach to win a
national tournament game with his career postseason
record of 4-19. The program’s last NCAA
Tournament victory came during the 2000 tournament,
when the Griffs beat Bethune-Cookman
in an elimination game by a score of 3-2 in 10
innings.
In 1994, the veteran skipper coached
Canisius to an amazing 36-8 record and an appearance
in the NCAA Tournament. Canisius
lost to top-ranked Arizona in the first game before
coming back to drop Rutgers in an elimination
contest. The Blue and Gold saw their season
come to an end after falling to Texas A&M.
Rappl’s 1993 squad set a then-NCAA record by
winning 35-straight games, en route to a 36-3 record
and the best single-season winning percentage
(.923) in school history.
From 1986-1993, Rappl coached the
Canisius women’s basketball team to a 93-94
(.497) record and served as the World University
Games Venue chair for women’s basketball in
1993. Additionally, the Buffalo native coached
the Western Region softball team to gold medals
at the 1997, 1998 and 2002 Empire State Games
and silver medals in 1995,1996, 2000 and 2003
with a bronze medal in 2001. He also served on
the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association/
USA Today Poll for the 1998, 1999, 2004 and
2005 seasons.
Rappl previously served as associate athletic
director for facility operations at Canisius.
He is an active clinician and softball speaker
and served three years (1995-97) on the NCAA
Northeast Region Softball Ranking Committee.
In the summer of 2005, he was honored by his
high school alma mater, as he was inducted into
the St. Mary’s High School Athletic Hall of Fame
and November 2007, he was inducted into the
Western New York Softball Hall of Fame. A native
of Lancaster, N.Y., Rappl earned a bachelor’s
degree in physical education from Canisius in
1977 and a master’s degree in 1980.

what is a griffin?
The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs
and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for
their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of
a lion.
Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been
called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the
land and sky.
They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and
claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid.
Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were
forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away.
According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though
the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius
College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to
us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which
disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit.
LaSalle’s ill-fated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons
and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in
honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.”
The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller
wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned
Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast
adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”
Developing Life Skills
CHAMPS/Life Skills
Canisius College has been a participating institution in the
NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program since 2000-01.
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is designed to:
P Support efforts of every student-athlete toward intellectual development
and graduation
P Use athletics as preparation for success in life
P Meet the changing needs of student-athletes
P Enhance interpersonal relationships in the lives of student-athletes
P Assist student-athletes in building positive self-esteem
P Enable student-athletes to make meaningful contributions to
their communities
P Promote ownership by the student-athletes of their academic,
athletic, personal and social responsibilities
P Enhance partnerships between the NCAA, member institutions
and their communities for the purpose of education
P Encourage the development of leadership skills
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program focuses on five commitment
areas:
• Academic Excellence
• Athletic Excellence
• Personal Development
• Career Development
• Service
• The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) serves as the
student-athletes’ line of communication to the athletics administration.
Two student-athletes from each team serve on the SAAC and
meet with department of athletics administrators once a month.
• Once each semester, Canisius recognizes its student-athletes who
have achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or higher at an
academic awards banquet.
• At the end of the academic year, the athletic department hosts the
All-Sports Banquet and announces the Male and Female Athletes
of the Year. The banquet also includes a video, featuring all athletic
teams, along with other award presentations.
• The athletic department also sponsors a student-athlete of the
week award. Each Monday, the athletic communications office
nominates candidates. The winner is determined by a fan poll on
www.GoGriffs.com.
• Canisius initiated a program in 2002, called Athletes For
Athletes, to increase fellowship among the student-athletes and
student attendance at home games. SAAC representatives from
each team pick one home game on their schedule they would like
all other student-athletes to attend.
Department of Athletics Mission Statement
Consistent with the Jesuit philosophy of education and the
mission of the College, the Canisius College intercollegiate
athletics program strives for excellence in academics, athletics,
leadership and service to others while embracing the
principles of good sportsmanship, ethical conduct and equity
in opportunity.
Core Values
In pursuing this mission the Department of Athletics subscribes
to established core values through which all stakeholders of the
program ensure that we will:
• Understand that our student-athletes are central to our
primary purpose and as such, their well being and successful
graduation from the college are expected.
• Continually recruit student athletes that will enhance our
program by representing the College with distinction.
• Tirelessly prepare for and compete in each contest with the
expectation of winning.
• Expect the highest levels of sportsmanship and personal
integrity from all participants.
• Strive to provide a leadership role in the College’s service to
the Western New York community.
• Embrace equal opportunity for all participants in a culturally
diverse community.
• Provide a positive educational and athletic experience for
our student-athletes and alumni that will create a passion for a
commitment to the college and engender a lifetime of support
for our Golden Griffins.
Developing Socially
Community Service
In following the Jesuit ideal of serving the
community, Canisius student-athletes regularly
volunteer at soup kitchens, elementary schools
and different charities and service organizations
all over Western New York. Canisius Athletics
also sponsors a 5K Run, called Shoes for the
Shelter, each year and collects shoes and other
clothes for homeless shelters. The Griffs teamed
with the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
in the MAAC Gives Back program and also
joined with the Office of Campus Ministry
to take part in the College’s annual Canisius
Strength and Conditioning
Jeff Lee
Head Coach
Strength &
Conditioning
In July 2007, Jeff Lee was
named the head strength
and conditioning coach
at Canisius College. In
this role, he is responsible
for overseeing the design
and implementation of
the strength training and
conditioning programs for
the school’s 16 intercollegiate
teams.
Lee joined the
Canisius staff after serving
a two-year stint as
the assistant strength and
conditioning coach at
Yale University. There,
the 26-year old Lee
worked with 11 of the Bulldogs’ varsity teams and
served as the primary strength and conditioning
coach for the men’s and women’s ice hockey
teams. He was responsible for designing and
implementing speed, strength and conditioning
programs for the hockey teams, while also overseeing
the department’s student work-study staff.
Prior to his time at Yale, Lee was an assistant
at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. He
worked primarily with the school’s men’s basketball
program as he earned his master’s degree in
exercise science. He also worked at the United
States Olympic Education Center in Marquette,
Mich., where he developed and implemented
Olympic-based strength training for 23 elite
amateur boxers.
Lee received his undergraduate degree
in physical education from Western Illinois in
2003. A member of National Strength and
Conditioning Association and the Collegiate
Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association,
he started his career as an intern at Binghamton
University in August 2003.
Lee and his wife Ashley, were married
July 27, 2007. The couple currently resides in
Buffalo.
The primary objective of the
strength and conditioning program
at Canisius College is for each athlete
to stay injury free while assisting
them in reaching their maximal
level of performance. This is
accomplished through an aggressive
approach to sport specific training.
Great care is taken to concentrate
on the joint areas that are most
susceptible to injury, muscle groups
that are involved in the activity
and conditioning specific energy
systems according to the demands
of the athlete’s specific sport.
Developing linear speed, agility,
range of movement, absolute
strength, functional strength and
sport specific power is important
in helping the athlete reach their
highest potential. Along with
strength training, a high level of
conditioning is required for optimal
performance. To accomplish this,
we implement high-performance
metabolic conditioning as a foundation
of total preparation.
The strength and conditioning
staff works to not only enhance each
athlete’s strength and conditioning
levels, but provide an environment
conducive to the development of
discipline and leadership skills for
reaching optimum physical potential
and mental toughness.
Athletic Facilities
Canisius has several excellent indoor and outdoor
facilities that host Golden Griffin athletic
events as well as high school athletic events.
Canisius facilities have been host to the Empire
State Games three times as well as numerous
high school playoff contests. Plans are underway
to improve the Koessler Athletic Center,
which houses the Canisius athletic department,
and the Demske Sports Complex, a multi-sport
facility that six Canisius teams call home. In
addition a state-of-the-art training room and
rehabilitation center that opened in the fall of
2007, locker room space for all 16 varsity sports
and more office space will be added within the
next two years.
Demske Sports Complex
• The Rev. James M. Demske, S.J. Sports
Complex provides a home field for Golden
Griffin soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball
teams.
• It has been hailed by The New York Times,
USA Today, and The NCAA News as a model
for urban campuses.
• The all-weather AstroTurf field, which is
fully lit for evening activities, features grandstand
seating for 1,000 and portable bleachers
for 150.
• Adjacent to the field are locker rooms for
Canisius men’s soccer, men’s lacrosse, women’s
lacrosse and softball teams.
• Prior to the 1999 season, Canisius replaced
the old turf with AstroTurf 12. Cushioned by
an E-layer, the new turf features inlaid lines,
a crushed red rubber track, a portable baseball
pitcher’s mound and breakaway bases.
• The Demske Sports Complex hosted the
men’s lacrosse tournament at the 2003 Empire
State Games, and the 2004 and 2006 MAAC
Men’s Lacrosse Championship.
Koessler Athletic Center
• Built in 1968, the KAC houses both the
physical education and athletic departments
and is the site of intercollegiate, intramural,
recreation and local high school sporting
events.
• The KAC consists of a multi-purpose gymnasium,
swimming pool, the brand new Center of
Athletic Training, a weight room and several
classrooms and offices.
Athletic Facilities
• The gymnasium underwent a facelift that was
completed in 2002. The ceiling was removed,
and the walls were refinished and painted. The
bleachers were replaced with 1,100 chair back
seats and new bleachers, bringing the capacity
to 2,176. The floor was refinished and repainted,
and a new sound system was installed. In
addition, the lighting was upgraded and wiring
was added to allow for televised games, while
the men’s basketball, women’s basketball and
volleyball locker rooms were also renovated.
The final touch was the addition of new scoreboards,
one of which lists individual players’
points and fouls.
• The Koessler Athletic Center was the site of
the men’s basketball tournament at the 1985,
1986 and 2003 Empire State Games.
Koessler Athletic Center Pool
• The Koessler Athletic Center Pool is a 25-
yard, six-lane pool and hosts meets for the men
and women’s swimming and diving teams as
well as competitions for the synchronized swimming
program. It seats 200.
• A new scoreboard system that shows the running
time and score throughout each event was
installed prior to the start of the 2005-06 academic
year. Each time a swimmer hits the touch
pad at the end of the lane, the split time for that
swimmer is displayed in his or her respective
lane on the scoreboard. At the end of the race,
final times are posted on the board until the
start of the next event.
• The scoreboard also shows point totals for
the meet for both the men and women’s teams.
Recording the times in the pool are touchpads
located underneath the starting blocks.
• New record boards were installed prior to the
2006-07 season. The boards list overall school
records for both men and women as well as the
Koessler Athletic Center Pool records.
into the top ranks of comprehensive
colleges and universities in the
northeast by raising the bar for academic
standards, capital improvements
and fundraising.
In the last 14 years under
Father Cooke’s leadership, Canisius
has invested nearly $120 million
in 17 capital projects on the Main
Canisius will remain in the forefront of undergraduate science
education with the creation of a world-class, interdisciplinary science
center in what is presently the HealthNow building and
parking pavilion at 1901 Main Street. The college is scheduled to
acquire the building in late 2007 and plans to begin construction
of the science center as soon as possible after acquisition of the
site.
Campus renovations completed during Father Cooke’s tenure
also include a complete renovation of the college’s signature classroom
building, Old Main, Lyons Hall and the construction of two
townhouse complexes, the Village Townhouses on Main Street
and the Delavan Townhouses on West Delavan Avenue. Canisius’
newest residence, Eastwood Hall, opened in fall 2005 and is now
home to 286 freshman and sophomore students.
Father Cooke and Canisius College received high marks in
a Buffalo News poll of Western New York leaders which ranked
Father Cooke as the second most influential civic leader and the
college as the second most influential institution overall in terms
of their positive impact on the community. Father Cooke was also
