2008 CANISIUS COLLEGE BASEBALL Athletic Facilities Canisius has several excellent indoor and outdoor facilities that host Golden Griffin athletic events as well as high school athletic events. Canisius facilities have been host to the Empire State Games three times as well as numerous high school playoff contests. Plans are underway to improve the Koessler Athletic Center, which houses the Canisius athletic department, and the Demske Sports Complex, a multi-sport facility that six Canisius teams call home. In addition a state-of-theart training room and rehabilitation center that opened in the fall of 2007, locker room space for all 16 varsity sports and more office space will be added within the next two years. Demske Sports Complex • The Rev. James M. Demske, S.J. Sports Complex provides a home field for Golden Griffin soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball teams. • It has been hailed by The New York Times, USA Today, and The NCAA News as a model for urban campuses. • The all-weather AstroTurf field, which is fully lit for evening activities, features grandstand seating for 1,000 and portable bleachers for 150. • Adjacent to the field are locker rooms for Canisius men’s soccer, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and softball teams. • The Demske Sports Complex hosted the men’s lacrosse tournament at the 2003 Empire State Games, and the 2004 and 2006 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Koessler Athletic Center • Built in 1968, the KAC houses both the physical education and athletic departments and is the site of intercollegiate, intramural, recreation and local high school sporting events. • The KAC consists of a multi-purpose gymnasium, swimming pool, the brand new Center of Athletic Training, a weight room and several classrooms and offices. • The gymnasium underwent a facelift that was completed in 2002. The ceiling was removed, and the walls were refinished and painted. The bleachers were replaced with 1,100 chair back seats and new bleachers, bringing the capacity to 2,176. The floor was refinished and repainted, and a new sound system was installed. In addition, the lighting was upgraded and wiring was added to allow for televised games, while the men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms were also renovated.The final touch was the addition of new scoreboards, one of which lists individual players’ points and fouls. 28
Buffalo State Sports Arena • The Canisius hockey team calls Buffalo State Sports Arena home. • The arena boasts seven locker rooms, including one used year-round by the Griffs. The rink also has a concession area, a skate shop with sharpening and rentals, a 200x85 ice surface and a seating capacity of 1,800. • A new sound system will be added prior to the 2006-07 season. • The Griffs have hosted two MAAC playoff games and one Atlantic Hockey Playoff contest at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. • The facility serves as a practice arena for the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres, the SABAH, Super Sunday High School Hockey Championships, NJCAA Championships, the Buffalo Skating Club, the WNY Federation High School Hockey League and several youth hockey groups. Koessler Athletic Center Pool • The Koessler Athletic Center Pool is a 25-yard, six-lane pool and hosts meets for the men and women’s swimming and diving teams as well as competitions for the synchronized swimming program. It seats 200. • A new scoreboard system that shows the running time and score throughout each event was installed prior to the start of the 2005-06 academic year. Each time a swimmer hits the touch pad at the end of the lane, the split time for that swimmer is displayed in his or her respective lane on the scoreboard. At the end of the race, final times are posted on the board until the start of the next event. • The scoreboard also shows point totals for the meet for both the men and women’s teams. Recording the times in the pool are touchpads located underneath the starting blocks. • New record boards were installed prior to the 2006-07 season.
