THE LOCKER ROOM
From the Principal
Term 3 has seen another period of outstanding
performances from our players, parents, staff
and supporters.
The amount of help needed, and provided, to
enable Rugby – our highest participation sport –
to be played each weekend at home and away
is quite remarkable, made all the more satisfying
by the enjoyment and success of our young men.
Just as much work goes into our vastly improved
Basketball program.
Both sports have proven successful overall, with
the performances by our flagship teams – the
First V and First XV – deserving special mention
for the way in which they competed week after
week, often against much bigger teams, and for
their sportsmanship.
On the cultural front, our Debating and Chess
seasons also came to an end, and like Term 3
sports, both had successful seasons. Our Senior
A Debating Team finishing as QDU Champion
and our very young Premier Chess Board,
showing great potential for the future.
We also are blessed with outstanding amenities
at Tennyson and at our main campus at Spring
Hill and I would like to thank Mr Alan Kennedy
and Mr Craig Jesberg at Tennyson, Activities
Coordinators Mr Tyron Mandrusiak and Mr Sam
Mackinnon, Coordinators Ms Alex Cashin and
Mr Bruce Devine, and the Rugby, Basketball and
Debating Supporters’ Groups for what they have
done not just in Term 3 but in the lead-up.
Next term it is Track and Field, which already
has begun, and Gymnastics, which dominate
sports proceedings and I am sure that we will
once again, compete to the best of our ability and
always exhibit the very best of sportsmanship.
Dr Michael Carroll
COLLEGE PRINCIPAL
My thanks to the many staff, Old Boys, coaches,
referees and supporters for their hard work and
dedication during the term in ensuring that as
many of our students as possible are able to
undertake their chosen activity - no matter what
level.
THE LOCKER ROOM
With more than 250 students participating
in Terrace Basketball this season I’d like
thank everyone involved in making it an
enjoyable and successful year. Special
mention must go to parents dropping
off at 6am, coaches balancing work and
university, volunteers for helping out where
needed and players for their commitment
to improve and put their best foot forward in
representing Terrace.
The 1st V must be congratulated for finishing
3rd, best result for a number of years. This
would not have been possible without Mr
Matthew Hamilton-Smith’s dedication to
development of our young men on and off
the court. Mr Andrew Latimer’s impact on
the group has been tremendous but 2015
sees Andrew departing Gregory Terrace
for a new work opportunity in New South
Wales. We wish him all the best for his new
venture.
To celebrate our season a dinner was
introduced and the response was amazing
with 285 students and parents attending
the event last Saturday night. This was
truly a fantastic night and part of Terrace
Basketball moving forward. We enjoyed
looking back at the season and handing out
awards to our deserving players.
Overall results in the win and loss column
didn’t vary much from 2014 but what we
did was compete and make adjustments to
our game style making huge differences in
the margins of defeats. This may not sound
great but it’s something I am proud of and
believe 2016 will see more wins across the
program.
Looking forward to next year, please see
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
Jonathon Roussetos
17 SEPTEMBER 2015
As the Term 3 activities come to
a close this week, our attention
turns to the pre-season sporting
programs leading into Term 1,
2016.
Term 3 saw the College’s Athlete
Development Program (ADP)
heavily involved across all inseason
sports and continue to
grow its exposure to all students
across the College. This was
achieved by undertaking
an important role during all
Years 5-8 HPE classes during
our Track and Field talent
identification process and also
being heavily involved during
the Track and Field sports
excellence programs across
these year levels.
Congratulations to the
successful season our First V
and First XV teams had this year
and also to all teams involved
in the Basketball and Rugby
programs. From an athlete
development perspective, our
2015 Firsts teams have been
exposed to the restructured
Athlete Development Program
for two years, which saw
enhanced physiological and
anthropometric adaptations
occur throughout the season.
The success of an ADP must
not be judged on the size of its
athlete nor the success of the
team but the ability an athlete
has to be able to play a full
season of sport injury free. This
is achieved by a periodised
approach where many phases
are gradually introduced into
the program to fully prepare the
athlete to be able to meet the
demands of any given sport.
Some of these components
include, gaining maximum
relative strength, undertaking
specific injury prevention
strategies and training under
fatigue, specific to an athlete’s
individual sport.
This season it was most
pleasing to see that our 2015
First XV athletes did not incur
any soft tissue injuries during
the season which allowed us
to maintain a relatively fullstrength
team each week. As the
program progresses, so too will
the training age of our athletes
which in turn will yield more
exciting results transferring from
the hard work put in during the
athlete development sessions
onto the field, court or water.
Next term will see the program
implemented into our Rowing,
targeting boys from Years 8-12
through various types of training
modules specific to each year
group. We also will see a much
greater involvement throughout
our Cricket, Volleyball and
Swimming programs which is
all part of the continual growth
and evolution of our ADP.
Participation in our junior HPE
classes also will continue to be
emphasized through our sports
excellence programs next term.
SPORT
17 SEPTEMBER 2015
THE LOCKER ROOM
DAMIAN WRIGHT - DIRECTOR OF SPORT
Thank-you to all involved in the Term 3 activities
of Basketball and Rugby. Both programs have
significantly improved over the last 12 months
and the future of Terrace Basketball and Rugby
is in good hands.
For Basketball, the season finished with a typically
strong program performance. An analysis of
the program would highlight the significant
improvement in the overall standard / skill level
on display by all the boys in Red and Black. In
short, Terrace boys are playing better, competing
better and are displaying far better game sense
and decision-making in game situations.
This significant improvement is a reflection on
the improved coaching levels now available to
the boys, headed by Mr Sam Mackinnon. The
opportunity for the boys to learn from someone of
Sam’s stature – both on and off the court – should
never be underestimated. Sam is well supported
by numerous hard-working coaches.
The First V recorded their 5th victory for the year,
overwhelming their opposition in front of a vocal
supportive crowd. This team has continually
defeated more fancied opponents and have
finished in 3rd position overall – this is a significant
improvement and good days are ahead for this
team. Congratulations to coaches Mr Matthew
Hamilton-Smith and Mr Andrew Latimer for their
dedicated programs in getting the best out of the
boys.
In Rugby, the Terrace colours flew strongly again
at Tennyson with a solid program performance.
Thirty-nine teams represented the College in
Rugby in 2015, and even though not all teams
had the opportunity to play on Saturday – many
boys were present to cheer on their mates.
The quality of Rugby on display weekly by
the boys in Red and Black is testament to the
program generated by Mr Tyron Mandrusiak.
Tyron is a tireless worker and provides great
opportunities for boys in the Red Program (A-B)
and the Participation Program (C-D-E-F).
SPORT (CON’T)
THE LOCKER ROOM
In season 2015, there was only one weekend
on which Terrace did not own the day and win
the majority of games - and on that day Terrace
produced numerous outstanding performances
to win 13 fixtures against Nudgee College – a
great result.
While other schools focus on a purely A/B
program, and limit the opportunities for boys to
play - the Terrace program provides opportunities
for all boys – regardless of previous experience.
Well done to all the coaches and parents for
providing such a positive sporting environment.
First XV - This team may feel like they
underperformed a little by winning three games
this season and finishing in 7th position overall.
The boys covered themselves in glory week in,
week out by taking on opposition who were much
bigger - however not once did any boy shirk his
job and all boys were dedicated and courageous.
In their minds they might consider three games
slipped away but that is in itself a reflection of
the vagaries of sport – the boys performed
exceptionally well and did the College proud.
Any summary of the two seasons cannot be
complete without the recognition and thanks to
the supporters’ groups.
Mr Dean Booysen and Mr Mark Macklin lead
the way in supporting the College’s programs
by leading their respective supporters’ groups.
Basketball and Rugby are well served by these
groups which work tirelessly and quietly behind
the scenes. Thank-you to both groups and
to both men for their outstanding leadership.
To both committees a sincere thank-you for
answering the call on so many occasions when
asked to volunteer your time. The programs
would not work as effectively as they do without
the numerous foot soldiers who so generously
provide their time in so many areas.
Sport has by no means now stopped – in fact it
is building to the great events of Term 4 with the
Track and Field championships on Saturday 31
October and the Gymnastics Championships on
Saturday 24 October.
Training for both activities is in full swing – Track
and Field athletes need to dust off their training
spikes and celebrate in the freedom of this great
activity.
If boys are in Brisbane over the holiday period
then they need to be involved in training Monday,
Wednesday and Friday of both weeks. The skill
set available for Track and Field athletes to
embrace is significant and highly influential on
performances at the Championships. Grab the
opportunity and train now.
TERRACE CULTURE
CULTURE, MATT COCKING
17 SEPTEMBER 2015
With the conclusion of the GPS Rugby season
just behind us, is it a great time to reflect on how
our community integrated all elements of school
life and has created a place where elite athletes
and musicians can stand on the same field to
thunderous cheers from the Terrace supporters
in the stands. Continuing our relatively new
tradition of having the Drumline support the
Rugby games has grown in its acceptance to a
point where atmosphere is void of punch when
they are not there.
Prior to the last game of the season, our Principal
Dr Michael Carroll, Director Sport Mr Damian
Wright and I sat together to plan the future and
build the supporter atmosphere through the
further inclusion of our ‘Athletics Bands’.
From this, the ‘Call to Arms’ was devised to bring
in the supporters from the surrounding fields and
give an aural energy to the fields. This was adopted
by our supporters and was a great success. Next
year will see us integrate the Athletics Bands
further into our sporting programing. Like many
other schools and colleges in the USA, these two
parts of school life walk hand-in-hand.
Bringing the Pep Band, Drumline and Rock
Bands to Tennyson will take ‘Terrace to the Fore’
of all GPS schools as Terrace Sport and Terrace
Culture work together as ‘Terrace’.
