PORT OF BRISBANE
OCTOBER 2008
OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE PORT OF BRISBANE
Patrick opens CargoLink
Patrick Port Logistics recently celebrated the opening of CargoLink
Brisbane, an interim container exchange facility designed to provide
a highly efficient exchange from the container park to the Patrick
AutoStrad® Terminal via a purpose-built automated interchange area.
The CargoLink Brisbane facility is the first of its kind in Australia with the
ability to provide quarantine cleaning and unpacking services on site,
a storage area for import and export empty containers, 80 reefer
powerpoints, and an efficient turnaround for time-critical cargo.
The opening of the facility on 22 September marked the completion
of the first stage of Asciano’s $135 million investment in an integrated cargo
handling precinct in Brisbane. The other major component, a new Terminal
facility at Berth 10, is due to open in January 2009.
The 4.4ha CargoLink site, which has been welcomed by Patrick Port
Logistics clients, handled 4,944 teus during its first month of commissioning
trials. The site is systems driven, integrating manual forklifts with Patrick
AutoStrad® technology, resulting in reduced truck movements and
increased supply chain efficiency.
Generally, arrangements at container parks see empty containers returned
to the parks and then moved, via bulk runs, into the terminal. CargoLink,
which is immediately adjacent to the Terminal, eliminates the second truck
movement, helping Patrick Port Logistics to achieve significant sustainability
benefits including fuel and carbon emission savings. Since opening,
CargoLink estimates it has saved the equivalent of approximately
2,800 truck movements.
CargoLink’s 4,500m 2 wash bay incorporates an advanced recycled
waste water treatment system, which uses recycled water to
Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service standards. The wash
bay accommodates heavy machinery and is open six-days-a-week.
It contains an undercover area for all-weather cleaning, as well
as fumigation, external container cleaning, and Giant African
snail inspection.
The CargoLink site operates seven-days-a-week from 6am to 12pm.
For further information about the facility, please contact Business
Development Manager, Allan Kemp on a.kemp@patrick.com.au.
New GrainCorp container packing facility
GrainCorp recently completed construction of a $4.5 million
purpose-built packing facility adjacent to its main grain terminal
on Fisherman Islands.
The new integrated packing facility has been designed to handle
in excess of 120,000 tonnes of grain per year with greater container
The new packing facility at GrainCorp.
packing efficiency, helping the company to achieve a significant
improvement in packing performance.
The new facility comes after GrainCorp relocated from their ContainerLink
site in July, following the completion of the existing lease agreement with
the Port of Brisbane Corporation.
The new highly automated dual inverter packing facility integrates the
existing main silo storage via a conveyor system, as well as providing local
and surge storage of up to 1,400 tonnes direct to the facility. The yard is
built to pack six containers per hour (approximately 35-40 per day), with
segregation of products as required. Container capacities of up to
25 tonne per teu of export chickpeas, sorghum, or wheat can be achieved
depending on commodity density.
The packing facility was designed with a number of safety considerations,
including a centralised area for plant operators, and controlled paths for
foot traffic. Additionally, environmental controls such as dust suppression
devices and swale drains have been introduced. Certified weighing and
integrated quality testing to Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service
requirements also enables containers to be loaded for direct dispatch.
