ANÁLISIS DESCRIPTIVO DE LAS MASAS DE AGUA OCEÁNICA 85 que se extiende desde el Continente Antártico hasta FP, se conoce como la Región Antártica o Zona Antártica (ZAA), y el área entre los frentes recibe el nombre de la Región Sub-Antártica o Zona Sub-Antártica (ZBA). Expediciones en la década de los 70 hicieron posible definir mejor las diferentes regiones antes expuestas (Sievers y Nowlin 1984), donde la Zona Sub-Antártica y la Zona Frontal Polar finalmente recibieron el nombre de Frente Sub-Antártico (FSA). PRIMERAS DEFINICIONES Y MÉTODOS En 1935, Wüst demostró, usando el Método de núcleo en la parte del Frente Polar (FP), que dicho núcleo estaba formado por agua de baja salinidad relativa que se esparce hacia el norte a lo largo del mínimo de salinidad. La llamó Agua Sub-Antártica Intermedia, pero posteriormente ha sido más aceptado el nombre Agua Intermedia Antártica (AIA) (figuras 3, 11, 12 y 13a). Aunque los procesos que conducen a su formación no han sido comprendidos claramente en detalle, Wüst explicó que el AIA desciende a capas profundas y se esparce hacia el norte. El Método de núcleo se define como una región donde un parámetro en el agua alcanza valores máximos o mínimos a lo largo de su distribución. El AIA incluye agua de la superficie desde la ZAA y está formada con una mezcla de aguas del FP; su recorrido es hacia el norte. El Agua Intermedia Antártica al hundirse tiene un espesor de aproximadamente 300 metros, con valores de temperatura de 2 a 3 °C y una salinidad de 34.2 UPS. Para encontrar su equilibrio al viajar hacia el norte, el AIA se hunde debido a su densidad (s t ) de 27.4, donde aguas de menor densidad están en la parte superior de ella y aguas de mayor densidad se encuentran a mayores profundidades. Así mismo, el AIA tiene valores de oxígeno disuelto relativamente altos, 5 a 7 ml l -1 , como resultado de haber dejado la superficie del mar recientemente (figura 13c). Durante su viaje hacia el norte en el océano Atlántico, el AIA aumenta su salinidad debido a la mezcla y difusión con las aguas adyacentes. Los valores de salinidad que se encuentran a lo largo de su viaje son en promedio: Wüst (1964), considera que menos del 5% del Agua Antártica Intermedia llega al Golfo de México. Los datos climáticos de varias décadas y distintos cruceros confirman lo anterior. Sólo pequeñas trazas de AIA salen del Golfo de México por el Estrecho de Florida hacia el Atlántico del Norte en el fondo de la Corriente del Golfo. Por otro lado, el remanente de la AIA

El remolino anticiclónico que se forma al desprenderse de la Corriente de Lazo al este del Golfo de México, es el último vehículo dinámico que moverá el remanente del AIA hacia el oeste del Golfo a profundidades entre 700 a 1,100 metros. En la formación del remolino anticiclónico como en su desplazamiento, el AIA será un factor importante.
