T ES TEMPERATURA O LA SUSTANCIA DE DIFUSIÓN RÁPIDA; S ES SALINIDAD O LA SUSTANCIA DE DIFUSIÓN BAJA y tiende a hundirse. Este fenómeno es llamado Estratificándose y puede producir capas claramente homogéneas, separadas por regiones con gradiente prominente de salinidad y temperatura. Hay evidencia de este fenómeno en el océano Ártico y en otros lugares. Ambos procesos podrán conducir verticalmente el calor y la sal, siendo más grandes con respecto a la razón de difusión molecular. Por lo tanto, la mezcla de agua de mar se da en mayores cantidades, que sin estos procesos, no sería posible. Una vez iniciado el movimiento pueden ser dinámicamente estables los procesos y romperse en pequeñas escalas con movimientos turbulentos, llegando a ser muy complicados. La última posibilidad es agua caliente y menos salada arriba, de una capa de agua fría y más salada que no permita la inestabilidad de doble difusión. El agua menos salada superior se enfría, de tal manera que no permite elevarse, pero tampoco consigue ser mas fría que el agua que es más salada por debajo, de tal manera que no presenta tendencia a enfriarse. Similarmente, el agua más salada inferior no propende a subir o bajar. Para que ocurra difusión doble, los gradientes de temperatura y salinidad a través de la interfase deben de ser del mismo signo; entonces afectan la densidad de manera opuesta y la difusión doble puede ocurrir.
