Unity Foundation Is So
Diverse… How Do I Use It?
LIKE TWO SIDES OF A COIN:
Giving Side:
• Give to support Unityʼs work
• Give to remember or honor someone
else
• Build your favorite fund
• Start a fund of your own—It only
takes $5,000
• Use automatic check withdrawal or
use Visa, MasterCard
• Give stock, life insurance, etc.
• Mention the Unity Foundation in your will
Getting Side:
• Get help furthering education through our many
scholarships
• Enjoy the services of non-profits
that receive grants from Unity
• Enjoy the services of non-profits
that have endowment funds with
Unity
• Learn more about the community
through the studies and information
Unity collects and shares
• Learn more about volunteering through the United
Way Volunteer Center
ABOUT OUR COVER
Mosaic of Unity—In this photo, veterans from the Wanatah American Legion helped students from the
Safe Harbor program at Knapp Elementary School in Michigan City create their unique mosaic tiles. Participants
shared stories from LaPorte County's past to help us better understand who we are today.
In honor of its 15th anniversary, Unity Foundation awarded $15,000 to the Jack & Shirley Lubeznik Center
for the Arts and Healthy Communities of LaPorte County through a competitive process. The grant
focused on “unity in diversity.” During the past year, individuals and groups from all over the county made
clay tiles that will be melded together in one large mosaic representing LaPorte County's people and cultures.
The process takes time but, when complete, will become a permanent symbol of “LaPorte County
unity” on an outside wall of the Lubeznik Center.

INTRODUCTION
The 100th anniversary of LaPorte
YMCA in 2009 turned our
thoughts back to those earlier
times. Only a few generations
ago, when resources were scarcer,
and when organizations such as
the Unity Foundation didn’t
exist, individual philanthropy was
a privilege reserved primarily for
the wealthy.
The legacies of the Barkers and the
Foxes continue to thrive today.
And the LaPorte YMCA steadfastly
continues its mission. But in
one important facet, times have
changed—philanthropy has been
embraced by a much wider segment
of the population.
Today, members of the community
such as the Nusbaums and the Troyers
(whom you will read about on
page 10 through 12) are doing
exactly what the Barkers and the
Foxes of yesteryear did. They are
creating lasting legacies. One hundred
years from now, their visions
for the future will still be significant.
The Unity Foundation is the vehicle
they use to accomplish their
goals of forward giving.
Families of means generously used
the power of philanthropy to the
benefit of the community. The Fox
family in LaPorte and the Barker
family in Michigan City are
notable examples. Their concern
for civic welfare resulted in the
Barker Annuity Fund (now the
Barker Welfare Foundation), Fox
Park and LaPorte Civic Auditorium,
among many other
accomplishments.
We can call these particular philanthropic
efforts “forward
giving”—investing in an enduring
legacy with the certainty that it will
continually benefit the community
for generations to come.
No wonder. Since the end of
World War II, our country has seen
economic growth and prosperity
nearly unique in its history. Statistically,
the current net worth
(CNW) of households in Indiana
is estimated at more than $310 billion—more
than $125,000 per
household.
For the impact it has on our
society, philanthropy is one of the
most powerful forces we possess. In
fact, all of us improve our community
through every act of giving,
charity and kindness. What most
people don’t realize is that they can
do even more. Creating a power
for good is in almost everyone’s
reach. In all likelihood, you have
the power of forward giving. And if
you do, why would you let all that
potential go to waste?
Create a powerful legacy.
Be a power for good.
Live a powerful life.
The Unity Foundation is open 24 hours a day at our Website, www.uflc.net. It’s the place to go when you want information
on giving . . . Grants • Funds • Scholarships • Benefits • Advisors • Events • And the Unity Foundation.
The Unity Foundation strives to realize a vision of LaPorte County as a cohesive community that uses its
diverse heritage to improve the quality of life for all through civic pride, service and philanthropy.
The Unity Foundation serves donors, non-profits and the community by building
endowment funds to provide income for local charitable causes—now and forever.
CO–CHAIRMEN’S & PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Friends of Unity:
Powerful Lives. We are in awe of how much good people do. We are privileged to share stories of members
of our community who lead powerful lives,—both those who give to and those who receive from Unity.
Life is changing. This past year brought unprecedented volatility in the economy, financial markets,
housing, jobs and more. Many are hoping for a “recovery,” a return to how things were. Others believe
that we have no choice but to “reinvent” ourselves, our communities and our nation.
There are four areas where the most change will most likely occur going forward: education, energy, housing
and transportation. How can we better harness our existing community resources and attract new
ones? How can we gain consensus on critical issues and take needed action? How do we assure that
LaPorte County is better 20, 50 and 100 years from now and NOT worse?
The Unity Foundation can be a catalyst for reinvention. But we’ll need your help. When Unity’s portfolio
dropped in value, so did our operating funds. Our investments have recovered, but it was still a setback.
Operations are funded three ways: a 1% fee on assets, gifts from people and businesses, and grants. Instead
of cutting back and retrenching, the Unity Foundation stepped up. How?
Besides providing grants to our hard working non-profits, the Unity Foundation:
• Paid out 5% on endowed funds because the need was greater than ever.
• Made more than $100,000 in community grants, focusing on basic human needs.
• Continued to make annual grants and scholarships of more than $700,000.
• Provided staff and resources to address critical issues like homelessness prevention,
literacy, health, environment and more.
What can you do? Think about new ways to improve the community. Think about how you and your
families, organizations or communities can reinvent themselves.
And think about how you can make your life more powerful by working with the Unity Foundation. Start
your own fund, support Unity operations, help build our many existing funds or just get more involved
and informed at any level. Together, we really can be a “power for good.”
when the
sees a better
for our
Heart FUTURE COMMUNITY
It started with a few thoughtful people of extraordinary vision. They saw beyond themselves beyond their families, beyond
today. They envisioned our community, improving and enriching itself far into the future. They envisioned their favorite
charities and community programs still involved, doing important work.
Today, this group of Visionaries has grown to more than 100 individuals and families. Each started a fund
or made plans for future contributions that best fit their needs and the needs of their families. In doing
so, they have made a lasting commitment to the community, the charities, and the causes they value.
Please consider joining us as a Unity Visionary! When you consider making a gift that will
last beyond your lifetime, there are advantages by giving through the Unity Foundation:
• Your gift will be professionally invested and administered.
• Your family members can be involved in continuing your philanthropic traditions.
• Tax advantages: directing gifts to charity can put you in control.
• Family harmony: using a 3rd party like Unity can be a good solution for hard to divide assets.
• Keep your family’s name alive in the community forever.
• Unity Foundation is flexible and can meet your family’s unique needs.
• Your community and favorite organizations benefit from your thoughtful planning.
Becoming a Visionary is Simple. Here’s How Others Did It.
• Name Unity as a beneficiary of your will, insurance policy or IRA and/or open a new fund
by signing a Fund Agreement with Unity.
• Tell us about it!
VISIONARIES
Ordinary people, extraordinary vision. Unity
Visionaries see beyond today to enrich our
community far into the future. They were inspired
to start a permanent fund; name Unity as a
beneficiary of their will, insurance policy or IRA;
or to create a charitable gift annuity. By doing
one or more of these acts, they are meeting
their goals today, while making a lasting
expression of their family values. Consider
joining this elite group—our Visionaries have
grown to more than 100 individuals and
families. *deceased
A LESSON IN LEGACIES
John and Florene Troyer have had the privilege of
experiencing first-hand the legacy of teaching for
almost their entire lives.
John’s parents Russell and Sylvia were teachers for
42 combined years. Although John resisted at first,
he eventually was, as he said,
“hooked” on the profession.
John taught speech, theater and
world history at Elston Junior
High. Florene was a teacher of
English and Social Studies—“a
cute little blonde teaching one
room away from me,” John
remembered. They moved on to
high school, where John taught
and Florene became a girl’s
college prep counselor, then Chairperson of the
Guidance Department, where she organized a
scholarship awareness program.
Both retired from the Michigan City Area Schools
in 1993. John continued to teach at Purdue North
“Teachers lead powerful lives
because our mission is helping
young people become better
citizens and to make their
livelihoods and lives
better in the future.”
Central until 2008—his fiftieth year of teaching.
Generations of students have passed through their
classrooms and through their lives, guided forward
by their experience. They were both elected to
MCAS Wall of Fame (as John’s father had been).
Looking back, John said,
“Teachers lead powerful lives
because our mission is helping
young people become better citizens
and to make their
livelihoods and lives better in
the future.”
A scholarship was a natural way
to pass the torch of their teaching
legacy. The Troyers
considered several charities, but a few fell by the
wayside and no longer exist. Florene said, “Our
lawyer and lifelong friend Mike Riley said to think
about the Unity Foundation because you can see
the results of your money working for you. Then
you could still leave money to the organization.”
They chose Unity to create the John R. and
Florene A. Troyer Scholarship, to provide scholarships
for youth or adults primarily from the greater
Michigan City area to pursue undergraduate
degrees, particularly in teaching or theater.
Florene added, “We like Unity because it was developed
within the community. They are in charge of
the fund, and determine the recipients, so we don’t
have to do the footwork. We have a lot of respect
for how the organization is run.”
Recipients of the scholarship earn a head start into
an opportunity that is more challenging than it was
50 years ago. Florene said, “Teachers have many
other complex issues today which they have to handle
in the classrooms.”
John is optimistic for those who will get “hooked” as
he did. He said, “There are a lot of good students
out there today. For a young teacher just starting
out, this is their golden age.”
Have you
considered starting or
easy it can be!
HORSEPOWER
ANNUITY
When it came to planning their
future, Robert and Delores Nusbaum
were just plane smart.
Bob and Dee are both licensed
airplane pilots. She was a widow
and he was a widower when they
met at an FAA event sponsored
by the Indiana Dunes chapter of
The Ninety-Nines, an organization
of women pilots to which
Dee belonged. Bob remembered,
“She asked me if I had a plane. I
did. I asked her if she wanted to
go flying. She did.” In 1993, they
added a wedding license to their
pilot licenses.
Before their marriage, Bob had
traded up for a more powerful
plane, a Piper Cherokee 180, so
named because of its powerful 180
HP engine. Bob and Dee flew to
every public airport in Indiana (in
alphabetical order, no less). There
are 109, and they traveled 13,765
nautical miles in seven years. There
were other trips as well, to distant
locations such as Ottawa and
Maine. But always, the return flight
home to Union Mills was special.
“The town is a very caring place,”
Dee said. “People have put a lot
of time and energy and money
into projects here. It’s a great
place to live.”
In the past few years, the Nusbaums
were flying less and less,
and thinking more and more
about their future. Dee said, “We
knew about the Unity Foundation.
I read an article about
someone I had known who had
promoted it, and I valued her
choices.”
The Nusbaums decided to invest
in an annuity through Unity
when they realized they could
name the Union Mills Conservation
Fund as their beneficiary.
Dee said, “We would be able to
funnel our annuity to the Mill
Park Fund, which is near and dear
to us. People of this town have
worked hard on it, and helping it
would be ultimately appreciated
in the future.”
So, about three years ago, the Nusbaums
sold their beloved
Cherokee 180. The proceeds from
the sale powered their annuity.
Dee said, “It gives us extra income,
but primarily, we thought it was a
good charitable donation.”
Bob said, “I don’t know if I ever
thought about leaving a legacy
behind until I spoke to Maggi
[Spartz of Unity]. I told her that I
was interested in the rate. And
Maggi said, ‘If that’s what you’re
interested in, it might be better to
put your money in an insurance
company.’ I said, ‘You mean some
company would get the money
when we die?’ She said yes. I said,
‘I don’t want to do that.’ She said,
‘See, you are a philanthropist!’”.
Take F l ight!
Help your future take flight with a gift annuity
through the Unity. Make a gift—get income for life.
For many people, it’s the right approach.
Income for Today—
A Gift for Tomorrow
Charitable Gift Annuity
How it works:
•You make a gift to Unity—you can give cash, appreciated
stocks, real estate, or other assets.
•You receive income for life, regardless of market conditions.
•We set up a contract with you that spells it all out.
•You also receive an immediate tax deduction for the
charitable portion of your gift.
•We handle all the administrative details—issuing annuity
payments to you during your lifetime and, afterward, issuing
annual grant awards to charities in the name of the fund.
•Your gift can be placed into an endowment that is invested over
time. Earnings from your fund are used to make grants
addressing community needs. Your gift—and all future earnings
from your gift—is a permanent source of community capital,
helping to do good work forever.
LAPORTE YMCA AT 100: A WORKING
The LaPorte YMCA celebrated its 100th anniversary
throughout 2009 with an anniversary dinner at
LaPorte Civic Auditorium, a community-wide ice
cream social and many other special events. The Y has
reason to celebrate—it is a vigorous organization of
about 5,900 members, ranging in age from six months
to 94. The Y is loved and supported. It is influential in
the community and in the lives of its
members.
noted how the Y helped shape his life. “Irv was not
able to afford the Y as a youth, so he came on a
scholarship, as did his wife Peg, whom he met here.
He learned to play basketball here, and went on to
earn a full basketball scholarship at Indiana University.
Now, their son-in-law serves on our board.
Their children are active, and grandchildren have
come through the program.”
Irv’s deeds spoke powerfully to the community.
Today, members such as Berchem are following his
footsteps. She said, “I was a member of the Y as a
kid. This is where I learned to swim. My kids
learned to swim here. My husband
and I and children were
members long before I
thought of working here.”
With such foresight and
dedication,
During this eventful hundred
years, hundreds of
people deserve thanks for
their commitment to the mission of the LaPorte
YMCA. Leaders were always willing to step up, as a
look back 25 years or so to a critical juncture in the
organization’s history shows.
In the 1980s, the facility was showing its age. Membership
was half what it is today. “Our board had the
vision and forethought to start a capital campaign to
get ready for the future,” said Executive Director
Cindy Berchem. “Today, we’re a very healthy notfor-profit.
Our membership has doubled because we
have a great board, great staff and great community
support. We have all the key pieces to make an
organization great.”
Irv Swanson was one of the board members who
brought about the YMCA’s renaissance. Berchem
the Y continues today to be a power for good as it
has been throughout its history. Berchem said,
“We’ve offered many services through the years, but
there is one thing that has stayed the same—we’ve
always met the needs of the community. In 1925, we
started the women and girls department. We were
one of the first YMCAs in the country to offer it.
Today, we offer more flexible child care, for single
parent families or parents with different work shifts.
During the Depression, we gave out free memberships
to kids. The Y didn’t turn any kids away. We
still do that through our Scholarship Fund.”
CELEBRATION
CARE
CHALLENGE
The Silver Sneakers
There are many needs to be met, so the hundredth
year might be called a working celebration. The
Scholarship Fund 2009 fundraiser was a record
breaker, raising more than $100,000. Last year, the Y
gave out $200,000 in scholarships. The YMCA also
has two Unity funds. The LaPorte Family YMCA
Fund is a general endowment fund. The LaPorte
Family YMCA Child Care Center Fund supports the
expanded child care center on Monroe Street.
Wait?
The YMCA
Child Care Center
wanted to build their
endowment fund with Unity.
Cindy Berchem said, “It’s a way to participate
in the YMCA besides being members. It’s
a way to build strength of the YMCA for the next
100 years.”
The Unity board and an anonymous donor wanted
to help. Together they challenged the Y to raise
$50,000 over three years. The donor would
match it and then Unity would send $50,000 to
the Center for literacy and accreditation efforts.
The Y needs only $5,311 to complete the challenge—nearly
one year early! Congratulations to
the Y supporters for making the Y stronger.
Support your favorite not-for-profit
organization today, and help it
prepare for the next 100 years.
PRESENTING THE LILLY SCHOLARS 2009
Helping Local People Get Ahead
The Unity Foundation has been blessed with many people who
want to help others go to college. There are 40 active scholarship
funds that granted $86,215 in 2008 to 82 students.
Many scholarships are open to non-traditional students.
A special scholarship was begun by the Indianapolis-based
Lilly Endowment Inc. who wanted to improve the low
education rates in Indiana. All 92 counties in Indiana
have the chance to recommend students for this prestigious
award. It pays for 4 years of tuition to any accredited Indiana
college. The process is rigorous. In 2009, of the 40 applicants, 8
were selected as finalists to be interviewed. The applications had
names and other identifying characteristics blacked out. Each application
stood on its own. This year, our Lilly Scholars came from the far corners
of the county—New Prairie and LaCrosse.
JACKSON TROXEL:
LaCrosse High School
Jackson lives by the credo, “To whom
much is given, much is expected.” After
receiving a degree in farm management at
Purdue, he plans to return, expand the
family farm, and become an active community
member. Jackson earned a 4.125 GPA,
ranked first in his class and was class president
for all four years! This motivated young man
served in leadership positions in 4-H, participated
in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference
and Leadership LaPorte County’s youth program.
Active in sports, he earned nine varsity letters in
three sports.
JILL FISCHER:
New Prairie High School
Jill’s academics were top-notch. She
carried a 4.065 GPA and earned 28
college credits before graduating. That
alone gets attention. But combine that
with her extracurricular activities, and
you end up with an outstanding all-around
student. Jill was a member of the Robotics
Team and was programming team leader. She
placed first in the state in the Spell Bowl twice,
in addition to participating in band, tennis, 4-H,
and serving as a mentor/tutor to a 5th grade student.
In her free time, she designed corn mazes for
her family’s farm. This remarkable young woman is
studying engineering at Purdue.
THE MILLION DOLL AR DIFFERENCE
Did you know that college graduates—over their lifetime—may make a million
dollars more than those with a high school diploma? Yes, it’s a big difference
when lifetime earnings for college graduates are estimated to be $ 2.1 million
vs. $1.1 million for high school graduates. And all education beyond high
school makes a difference. For example, those who go on to join the trades
through apprenticeship programs are estimated to earn $1.8 million over
their lifetimes. There are many local options for learning…
it’s never too late!
Carpenter Dominic Mason
died in 1989.
Tomorrow, he’ll renovate
the playroom at the
homeless shelter.
As a carpenter, Dominic renovated homes for
his clients. As a child, he and his mother found a
home in a shelter when times were hard.
A counselor there showed Dominic
a future filled with opportunity,
and he never forgot that life-changing vision.
Thanks to a bequest in his will,
a few more children will have
a chance to build their dreams.
Include your favorite cause in your will or estate
plan. Contact Unity Foundation, an attorney or
financial advisor to learn how.
