LAW WEEK 2013
TASTY TREATS ACCOMPANY SOUND KNOWLEDGE
Cookies, cupcakes, and squares, oh my! Donated baked
goods from lawyers of all areas of practice in the
capital city sold quickly as lunch-goers crowded
around the annual Law Week
Bake Sale on Friday, April 19.
The Free Legal Information kiosk
also proved to be a hot-spot with
a variety of information packages
being picked up by the public.
Pro Bono lawyer Jeannette Savoie
headed the kiosk for the third
consecutive year. “It was a great
success; a very busy lunch-hour,” she said, noting a
number of people requested follow-up appointments
or referrals.
The extended lunch break
emptied both tables of goods and
publications, and drew in a total
of $580.50 for the Yellowknife
Food Bank.
LAWLINE ANSWERS THE CALL
The NWT’s LawLine, the free legal information
hotline, was resurrected as part of the events
celebrating Law Week. Volunteers took turns
manning the lines between 5:00pm and 7:00pm
throughout the week, and most nights saw the phones
ringing regularly.
Northwestel graciously provided the temporary tollfree
number as Tricia Ralph, Karin Taylor, Emerald
Murphy, Glen Rutland and Jeannette Savoie shared
the hours for answering calls and assisting all
residents in the NWT with their legal concerns.
“It was great to hear the phone ringing almost nonstop
some nights,” said one staff member at the Law
Society/CBA-NT office.
