Open Studios 2010
Yes - I’m back. After faking my artistic credentials
beautifully last year, I now have been asked to maintain
that facade for 2010’s bigger than ever event.
Over the last 12 months, though, I’ve learnt a thing or two
about creativity that makes me a little more comfortable
about my involvement. I’ve learnt that you and I, every
single one of us, is creative in some way. From the
preparation of a special dinner to the way we put an outfit
together; from the poem we write about our mate for his
birthday to the artistic way my dear husband arranges
the pillows on the couch. In a myriad of different ways, we
utilise those creative parts of our brains nearly every day.
I’ve also learnt amazing things about creativity’s power.
Remarkably, it seems that whether we are partaking in
it or simply witnessing or enjoying the results, we are all
beneficiaries. And if my experiences during last year’s
Open Studios are anything to go by, it’s true. Standing at
painter Jenny Reddin’s property and seeing the blackened
landscape that inspired much of her 2009 work or
speaking with conceptual artist Ali Griffin as she stood in
the gallery that was also her home after losing her house
in the Black Saturday fires. I not only wanted to purchase
everything I saw, I said a prayer of thanks along the way
that these people exist.
For they, together with every other person who is part of
this event, bring not only beauty to the world but a sense
of meaning and understanding. Bad things happen; good
things happen; but often it is only through the creative
process that we get to the root of the experience. And it
doesn’t matter whether you are the creator or the receptor
- we are all on the journey together.
So, welcome again. I know that you, like me, will cherish
the opportunities that Open Studios provides and will
walk away refreshed and inspired by the restorative
powers of creation.

Healesville Glassblowing Studio was founded by Tim
Bassett & Tali Dalton, internationally recognised glass
artists with a combined practice of over 25 years. Their
individual work is in the Australian National Art Glass
Collection and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Tim specialises in site-specific contemporary chandeliers
while Tali’s focus is on sculpture.
‘We work independently but also collaborate on a range of
functional objects where we approach the vessel as a
canvas on which to explore colour and texture in a painterly
manner, creating abstract and expressionistic land and
skyscapes. Our mezzanine viewing area provides the opportunity
to see, first hand, the ancient art of glassblowing.’
My works are bright and beautiful, and meet my need to
create beauty that gives joy and happiness; works that
uplift the viewer and wearer; to create original works of
positive beauty. As an intuitive contemporary artist I work
in two disciplines; painting; using acrylics and precious
leaf on canvas or linen; and textiles including crochet and
felting, using Australian wool, imported silk and Yarra
Valley Alpaca.
Giving honour to the past, while moving forward into
tomorrow, my creativity is underpinned by study and
observation, by beginning, thinking, planning and
drawing. Through actioning these processes, the muse
takes over and completion follows.

When I paint, I strive to interpret mood and atmosphere,
whilst maintaining reality in my imagery. The atmospheric
mountain mists set against the lush greens and rich
ochres of the farmland of the Yarra Valley are one of my
favoured subjects. When I paint people, I love to place
them in their environment where they can tell their own
story. My artistic journey continually compels me to
find new ways to paint what my eyes see. My primary
medium is oil but I also work in pen, charcoal, pastel and
watercolour on silk.

When I was 12 my family moved from the suburbs to the
Dandenong Ranges. At this time the area was still very
countrified and, together with our dog, I would spend
many hours wandering through the bush, observing
plants, rocks, birds and wildlife. I later moved to the
Sunshine Coast and fell in love with the ocean.
I developed a real love of nature and it is this feeling that I
re-capture when working on my paintings – sunset colours,
changing moods of the ocean and sky, the beauty of
landscape, flowers, birds and animals. I find painting these
subjects as absorbing and peaceful as being in their midst.

Taking great photographs is like listening to a story.
There’s a moment when you truly hear another’s story
that complete understanding passes between you. It’s
during that moment in photography that a great image
is waiting to be captured. I try to be present in the
moment before me, to take photographs that pass on
understanding and tell a story.
My works explore the realms of imagination, the
unconscious and dream-like states. Animals, figures,
nature and words, are sources of inspiration, yet they are
not literally interpreted. The images I create are symbolic,
otherworldly and surreal. I have been practicing and
exhibiting as a Visual Artist including group shows in New
York, Austria, Italy and regional galleries around Australia.
I also work as a Conceptual Illustrator and have had works
published in magazines and books.

I like to make tableware for my home or yours, as well
as completely useless things that you need just because
they make you smile!
I work with stoneware clay, often with light subtle glazes
to enhance the shape of the pot. My ceramics have a
handmade look and feel not all quite the same but still
clearly friends.
I get inspiration from my home country, Sweden. I grew
up next to the salty ocean, and dream about the nature,
light, houses, lakes and people.

I always paint with a spontaneous passion for colour,
design and natural creativity. I have specialised in Silk
Painting for 18 years and use story, symbols, nature and
landscape to create unique, bright, happy, vibrant work
that continually evolves.
I am inspired by my surroundings, the Yarra River as it
flows from Warburton, through the Yarra Valley towards
the sea; people and every day life experiences.
For myself, 2010 began with change, exploration and a
new direction. As my Arte work unfolds, I find harmony in

Conceptual art
My passion is for pastels, but sometimes I choose to paint
a particular subject in oils or acrylics. I love the feel of
the pastel as I put it straight to the paper - such vibrant
colours appear.
In my studio you will find many varieties of pastels and
papers, which I use to create my works of art.
The experience of being part of last year’s inaugural Open
Studio, was exciting. I look forward to showing you how I
create a pastel painting.
Ever-changing, always looking, constantly learning.
Interested in expressing the intricacies of life, I find it stifling
to place myself in a particular creative category. So in
my artistic life, I lead a very personal journey whilst trying
to communicate a concept to the viewing audience. This
may take form in a multitude of mediums, including sculpture,
painting or drawing - through which I am learning to
trust my creative self, and let it guide me to a wisdom that
may not have been reached if not for my arts practice.
I am happiest when my studio is full of books, recycled
materials and sunlight.

I work almost exclusively in pastels, being attracted
to their unique texture, glowing colour and the variety
achievable, from a spontaneous sketch to a more detailed
painting. My subjects include still life, which I use to
express ideas and stories, figures and portraits.
In the mid eighties I studied pastel portraiture with
portraitist/artist/tutor Daniel Greene in New York. I have
exhibited widely, and have also been published nationally
and internationally. I have received several awards,
including the Allied Artists of America Award at the
Pastel Society of America annual exhibition, New York
City in 1993.

I am passionate about photography as a medium to
capture and express the very essence of life… simplistic

I have worked for 16 years as a primary school art teacher,
and 13 years as an Art Consultant, running practical art
workshops for teachers.
During that time I also worked on my own art, and now
enjoy exploring what I can do with all sorts of materials.
My main love is creating small sculptures, using recycled
bases and a modelling medium. I also make hand painted
calico bags and love the thought of people carrying my
artwork around shopping centres. I also paint on canvas

Valley ‘sisters’ theme.

I initially used art as a tool to work with and find insight
into my struggle with depression. My work comes from
spontaneous thoughts and feelings about society and
myself – in a nutshell I approach the canvas or paper and
see what happens. My art often mirrors the extremities
of our every day human conditions – depression, social
angst, lethargy, mania, often tinged with a sense of
humour. My influences are surrealism, expressionism,
horror movies, media, the books I read, the music I listen
to and anything else that pops into my head.

My visual art practice is an integral part of my life and
when I sculpt I feel a powerful and embracing energy. My
works are human/animal forms that invesigate the human
condition and our impact on the environment. I reference
extinct, endangered and introduced species to reflect
upon personal concepts relating to identity and home.
I hold a Masters of Fine Art with works represented in
Australia and Europe.
The shared studio: Kim Evans and I met during our art
studies. She has remained my best friend and creative ally
for over 20 years. We continually support each other’s
growth and journey as artists, and the studio is our
creative sanctuary.
I am a textile artist, specialising in the creation and use
of felt as my major medium of expression. Felt is the
textile that results from the fusion of animal fibres, mostly
sheeps wool. It is an ancient and contemporary textile
simultaneously.
Whether creating clothing or pieces for gallery exhibition,
my goal is the same; to stretch the boundaries of this
versatile medium and create contemporary, beautiful
pieces of the highest quality. My locally produced
clothing, made from wool sourced within a short radius
from my base is the ultimate in sustainable clothing with
very low GGE miles!

I live in the Yarra Valley and have been painting for more
than 35 years, building a substantial following throughout
Australia.
I presently have two focuses to my work. The first
consists of Contemporary, Realist and Semi-Abstract
paintings, dealing with landscape, coastal and forest
scenery, and the dramatic seasonal changes within
that scenery. Some of these paintings deal with the
devastation created by Black Saturday 2009.

My studio now has an exciting new Gallery space where
I am able to showcase a wide array of individual pieces
including pastels, watercolors, acrylics, oils and a unique
technique using automotive colors.
My main focus is to create realism in what I paint, mixing
the texture and variety of mediums to express an individual
piece. Inspiration has come from being lucky to live in the
Yarra Valley for the past 20 years; living and working in an
area of supreme beauty brings creativity for an artist.
The second area of focus deals with the human subject,
often within a landscape scene. I endeavour to capture
the inner feelings and sensitivities of the subject through
the use of brilliant colours amid vibrations of form.

Painting for me is an amalgamation of elements that
communicate an idea, a feeling, a mood, and should be
done with a passion. Everything I paint is a statement
about myself. After the first stroke, the surface I’m
working on assumes a life of its own and I become both
spectator and performer in my own event.
Creating is like a roller coaster ride, beginning with
the anticipation and excitement, followed by the uphill
climb, then gliding down hills with ease, and the grand
finale of the finished product. In the process I can both
lose and find myself.

The development of my discipline as a goldsmith is marked
by four significant events; discovering jewellery as a child,
graduating as a goldsmith from Monash University, opening
Silvermist Studio in Healesville and being accepted as a
Fellow into the Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia.
For me, jewellery has become an intimate form of sculpture
where function is given equal or greater importance than
form. By melting, hammering and bending precious metals
around gemstones I handcraft beautiful treasures.
The jewellery is now a precious, valuable and durable
symbol of significant events either in my life or in those
I have created for. It will in time, become an antique and
family heirloom.

I find inspiration from flashes of images and colours out of
the corner of my eye during my daily life, driving down the
road, or on the farm. I seek ambiguity, leaving the viewer
to interpret. I am interested in the interplay between light,
dark and textures. There are suggestions of landscape
and figure and an element of drama. They are not quiet
paintings – sometimes a feeling of night time – of a rabbit
caught in the headlights, an image that challenges the
viewer and strives for a deeper content. I seek not to be
too controlled but to hold it together with unity and form.

strategic disciplines of the advertising industry has made
my move to full time painting feel like a new beginning;
the ability to express with mind and materials and no
boundaries.

I draw inspiration from helping to regenerate our
vineyard which was burnt in the February 2009 fires and
experiencing the benefits Biodynamic Practices have
contributed to the regeneration of the vines.
I am currently working towards an exhibition based
on ‘Regeneration’, celebrating the amazing strength
of nature to recover and the colour and life that has
emerged from the black.

I graduated from the Canberra School of Art in 1988 with
a Bachelor of Art (Visual) in Printmaking. After teaching
Lithography at the School of Art, I moved to Melbourne,
and when landscapes and particularly clouds, became
a major focus of my work, I seized an opportunity and
moved to the Yarra Valley.
My technique has evolved through printmaking, cutting
and pasting, using collage, ink, pencil and pastel and I
now paint with acrylic on canvas.
From 2005-2008 I was exhibition coordinator at Yering
Station Art Gallery and co-coordinated their Sculpture
Exhibition. I currently manage a Cellar Door, where my
work is on permanent display.

I embrace my art with the same philosophy as my life - to
seek deep truth and honour the Mother Shakti inherent
in all creation. The language I communicate through my
art is rich and sensual, earthy and cosmic with a diversity
that delves into ancient cultures, sacred practices,
spiritual nectar and the unity consciousness of our whole
existence. I seek to emulate the luminosity of light and
colour, combining the ancient masters technique of oil
glazes and egg tempera paints, which I mix myself from
pure pigments and traditional mediums. I aim to produce
quality works of art with extra-ordinary contemporary
visionary content.

“Nature, Wildlife and Painting” are my passions! Oils
and Pastels are my preferred mediums with which I love
creating wildlife and nature artworks. I really get lost in
my paintings and love every minute of the journey. The
Yarra Valley is such an inspiring area in which to live -
I believe this is my “little piece of heaven”.
I would hope my art is in some way a message for people
to think about Healesville their actions so our wildlife, their habitats

My artwork which started as a hobby, has become
enjoyable, challenging, rewarding and at times exciting.
Instead of directing my energy into negative thinking,
making art lets me use the same energy in a positive
and creative way. I particularly enjoy the challenge of
portraiture and people often comment on the expressions
I’ve been able to capture in the faces. I personally think
that some of the emotions and bottled up feelings within
me, or what I can see in others, comes out in my work.
For me art is a freeing and healing form of expression.

Creating art is a meditative practice for me, a discipline of
focused awareness.
Highly textured and sometimes sculpted with papier–
mache, my love of line and textures come together to
create, with vivid colour, art to stimulate the senses.
I have been exploring the ancient art of Yantra, that is
specific art used for open eye meditation. The paintings
produced with this in mind are functional contemporary
images to be meditated upon.
My meditative works sit alongside commission pieces,
figurative, landscape and purely energetic art works.
I completed my Craft Degree in 1991, majoring in Gold
and Silversmithing. Life’s journey has brought me family,
motherhood and now, Designer Jeweller in precious
metals, stones and wood.
I love the different colours and patterns in the timbers
that exist on our planet and I intend to use more recycled
timbers in the future. l also like experimenting with
textures in my metal. My inspiration comes from life,
nature, communication and symbolism, (historical, cultural
and modern) particularly the Runes; the Vikings used them
as a simple form of communication, unspoken language. I
hope my individual pieces communicate to you.

I am inspired and influenced by the inherent beauty of the
natural environment, its colours, shapes, texture and its
changing moods.
My art making is a process of following your instinct
rather than consciously trying to pre-determine an
outcome. Vibrancy, spontaneity and an atmosphere of
mystery is essential.
In painting I try to express the landscape in an intuitive
rather than literal manner, using acrylic, watercolour and
gouache, to interpret the rhythm and patterns of nature.
My drawings are an exploration of line and texture in pen
and ink, graphite and pastels while my sculptures cover
a variety of subjects from figurative to abstract, working
mainly in wood.

I am drawn to unique firing techniques such as saggar,
wood firing and raku. My style is very much influenced by
the Central Australian outback. The effects achieved allow
me to capture the amazing colours of the region.
Ceramics to me is an ever changing journey; the road I
set out on isn’t necessarily the path I end up on, however
there is plenty of interest along the way. The process is as
enjoyable as the results and after many years of potting I
still haven’t lost the passion or the enjoyment.

My Arts practice has moved away from direct carving
to construction, assemblage and lamination of timber,
incorporating an array of found objects and recycled
materials. I am particularly fond of old furniture parts
which often form the nucleus of my sculpture.
I generally commence with a loose image and allow
unfolding to flow its own course and momentum. I am
presently less inclined to wanting to wear the mantle
of sculptor and its associated connotations to simply
enjoying playing in the studio immersed in a timeless
plane.

I established my studio after completing a BA (Fine Art)
at Phillip Institute, Melbourne in 1980. Using one of the
most unpredictable glazing techniques, my ceramics
feature crystal patterns or blooms.
Very high kiln temperatures are used to fire the clay
and then the kiln is cooled over many hours. During this
cooling process, crystal patterns of various shapes and
sizes form, giving the appearance of delicate flowers,
stars or frosts. My work has been exhibited in the National
Gallery of Victoria and Parliament House, Canberra.

I have been making pots for over 25 years and I still love
the feel and texture of the clay on my hands.
The bright underglaze colours I use to decorate my pots
excite me with their vibrancy and each of my pieces
becomes a celebration of colour.
Fun and whimsy abound in my work but attention to
function and form is always present.
I create each piece either on the potter’s wheel or by hand
and enjoy the rhythm of my days working in my studio.
My life is an obsession with creativity. From childhood
I have always observed, created, learned and lived art.
Drawing, visual documentation, art history and design
fill my mind. Now, after a love affair with coffee and its
industry I have returned to art.
While recently living on Vancouver Island, two things
changed my life. The first being exposure to the art of
Japanese woodblock printmaking. The second was the
culture and artwork of the Northwest coast native peoples.
I hope to honestly reflect the world I see within anything
that I produce, whilst utilising materials that do not harm
others.

“The Sheila’s Shed” reflects my diverse interests as poet,
painter and garment designer. What inspires me about
making Wearable Art from recycled and collectable
materials is that it encourages ordinary people to express
their own style and beauty in collaboration with the artist.
My joy is in the creative process.
I was born into an artistic family and have sewn, sketched
and written poetry since childhood. I continue to explore
different mediums and am currently taking pastel classes
in Healesville.
My studio, at the foothills of Mt Donna Buang, is colourful
and light, and visitors can enjoy many sensory pleasures

To me, creating art is a communion with creation, it is
a meditation where one “loses” self and merges into all
that is and all that is yet to be. The artwork can also be
a contemplation, rather than a mental, conceptual idea
of artmaking. To a large degree it is the process and the
form which shapes the content of the work, employing
colour, mark making, symbol and shape through oil paint,
and texture via the encaustic process.
Trained in Queensland, I have been exhibiting since 2000,
selling work and completing commissions. My works have
sold in Australia, USA and Canada.

My training as a textile designer and screen printer has
rewired the way I look at the world. From smooth river
stones, to the unique tactile nature of a eucalyptus tree or
compositors printing block, I see not just the object itself,
but a motif or a texture.
This all becomes part of my visual language, as I simplify
shapes and build layers in my collage, using my printed
fabrics, found objects and the ephemera of every day life.

Inspiration for my artwork comes from my love of nature,
and my home in a beautiful tranquil valley with huge
mountain ash and flowing water.
Recently I have begun to explore the elemental qualities
of copper and dry point. Its velvet subliminal qualities
suggestive of movement have a fragile and textual
quality, which is in direct contrast with the hard-edged
application on the surface of the copper. The mark has a
physicality, which is drawn directly onto the plate, derived
from my insight into the environment.
The importance of the mark making process and its
strength provides a glimpse into another detailed world.

In an old dairy overlooking the beautiful Woori Yallock
Valley you will find my studio.
My work encompasses a broad spectrum including decorative
garden pieces, contemporary lighting, fine porcelain
with gold inlay, and celadon or shino glazed homewares.
For the garden I’ve made water features, majestic “Queen
Head” planters, designer boulders and lights for terraces.
For the home I’ve created large slab constructed lights
with patterns of piercing and gold inlay, which also
function as containers for reeds or bamboo.
I still continue my signature work in porcelain with designs
of fine black lines inlaid with gold lustre.

My works are both autobiographical and inspired by the
landscape around me. They depict the beauty of our
world and the many ways we interact and experience life.
Romantic cloudscapes hover over a world where day and
night often appear simultaneously. Oversized toys inhabit
fictional landscapes, representing the daughter/child/
human race and alluding to our impact on the natural
environment.
Expanses of tea tree blend into the rock pools of
holidays spent at the beach, as light, both nostalgic and
voyeuristic, streams across darkened front lawns.
I have worked with ceramics for over 30 years, and feel
my work is evolving along a distinctly earthy path, with
inspiration drawn from the environment in which I live
and work.
Recent work is largely Raku Fired, and primarily decorative
rather than functional. The process involves lifting fragile
pieces from the kiln at 1000°C wearing protective apparel.
No firing can be repeated, making each piece highly
unique.
I am also an enthusiastic watercolourist, although my
ceramic work has recently taken precedence.

With landscape I am particularly inspired by the effects
of weather and time of day; and the subsequent light,
colours and atmosphere. Sky, reflections, surface textures
and shadows are often a particular focus.
Working predominantly in oils, although watercolours are
of great use when travelling, I prefer to paint on site, trying
to record and share my visual awareness of places of
beauty and interest within the Yarra Valley and beyond.
Another aspect of my work involves equestrian pastel
sketches from direct observation where I try to immediately
and quickly capture a sense of the movement, power and
grace of individual dressage horses and riders.

I have been working as a potter for what seems a lifetime,
and get great pleasure from it. My skills come from years
spent studying and working in Japan learning fine porcelain
techniques, though I make a diverse range of ceramics

With my current works, I am investigating light, colour
and spatiality, expressed through sculpture. To realise
this, I am using a diverse range of materials, including
stainless steel, mild steel, concrete and glass, and
engaging natural light or artificial light to animate the
experience of my works.
Living in the Yarra Valley is always an inspiration for an
artist. Especially the changes of the natural light and
the colour it produces in the landscape. My work is
more indirectly related to those phenomenon, but still
important as I am deeply concerned with architecture in a
virgin landscape.
Colour has always fascinated me, both in pattern
and design and generally in my artwork. Its power of
suggestion motivates the way I work.
Line is another element I favour, sometimes used to
create strong shapes or else in calligraphic form. Its
sensitivity can be so suggestive of space.
My artwork often tells a story – by suggestion rather
than being merely representational. Scale changes or
exaggerated shapes help to create tensions or emphasis.
By exploring a range of mediums and techniques, I feel
that each component of my work remains fresh, as each
area of work influences the other.

My designs are based on free flowing organic forms and
patterns. I am inspired by the lines and forms of nature
like the growth of a plant, grass in the wind, the flow of
a river or a rolling landscape. I use simple bending and
shaping techniques, a gas fired forge and an old power
hammer to create the components for gates, balustrades
and architectural details.
I use my Architectural Ceramics and Design background
to design artistic objects for specific spaces. The majority
of my work comes from private commissions although
I have completed a number of public and commercial
projects.
25 years ago I got out of the workforce to do something
creative. Inspired by my friend Pam Merlo to “do what is
in your heart”, I took classes at Potters School at Potters
Cottage, Warrandyte. I later purchased the business and
ran the school with my son Justin. I had the benefit of
observing the different teachers and their techniques.
For the past 12 years I have had a studio, Cow Shed
Pottery, in Yarra Glen. I make functional pieces in
Stoneware with earthy colours of blacks, blues and reds,
as well as Raku and Lustre pots.

I was lucky to have inherited my mother’s artistic spirit
and my father’s love of blending colours. I am a self
taught artist who keeps an open mind to take up new
and different textile applications. My work mainly involves
layering and three dimensionality, and I often combine
different disciplines of fabrics and textiles to achieve truly
unique outcomes.
Living in the beautiful Yarra Valley means I find endless
sources of inspiration and materials including recycled
materials that I incorporate whenever I can.

This is a profound and insightful proclamation from French
philosopher Emmanuel Levinas and is a predominant and
undeniable influence on the art I create.Through my artwork
I endeavour to create an accessible in-between space of
meditative openness for intuitive and empathetic reflection
on our complex relationship with other animals. To capture
the physical characteristics and unique personalities of people
and other animals I predominately paint in oils, employing
a traditional and classic style and I also complete large
graphite drawings and watercolour studies of my sitters.

I am both a potter of functional ware, and of hand built
sculptural forms.
Many of my pieces take on a whimsical nature by the
exaggeration of a certain feature. I enjoy the tactile
nature of clay and am inspired by the environment and
its abundant palette of texture, colour and shape. I use
a variety of clays and I’m particularly fond of the warm
speckled earthy colours. I love exploiting the texture
in clay – either by highlighting patterns using oxide or
placing texture over texture and glaze on glaze – thus
allowing the piece to form its own unique pattern.
We are pleased to welcome the Stitchers & Sketchers
groups as friends of the 2010 Yarra Valley Open Studios.
Alowyn Gardens hosts these two groups in 2010 whilst
the Yarra Ranges Council conducts an upgrade of
the community hall which they usually call home. The
upgrade acknowledges the importance of activities such
as art, in the healing of communities after the 2009 fires.

We are pleased to welcome KRVPAA as friends of the 2010
Yarra Valley Open Studios. Since ‘Black Saturday’, February
2009 and in spite of many members losing their homes
and all their equipment, Kinglake artists have endeavoured
to express their personal response to the bushfires and to
create a visual record of their journey of recovery.
Kinglake artists come from a diverse range of social
and ethnic groups. They work together in a spirit of
friendly cooperation to produce art that reflects their
personal response to the bushfires, provides inspiration
and comfort to their community and offers the onlooker
an artistic insight into the strength and resilience of the
Kinglake people.
