In the early 1970’s my grandmother, Ros Bower,
helped form the Community Arts and Regional
Development Committee of the Australia Council.
She personally championed artists and others to help
Australians to explore new ways of seeing themselves
through the arts.
When I was a girl I was lucky enough to spend a lot
of time with my other grandparents in their studio,
completely at home among the brilliantly coloured
glass from their lead lighting, every surface smeared
with paint and that syrupy musk of pottery in the air.
It felt totally normal to be surrounded by creators
and their work every day. However, growing up, I
soon realised that this was actually not a common
experience for kids my age. I feel so privileged to have
been a part of their wonderful creative life.
Welcoming you to Yarra Valley Open Studios feels a
bit like sharing my childhood with you all. It’s about
discovery and delight, witnessing creativity and rare
talent at work, and immersing yourself in the creative
process of these amazing artists.
So often we may admire a piece of fine pottery or
an artwork in a gallery and wonder: How did they
do that? Set against the backdrop of the stunning
Yarra Valley, a masterpiece in itself, Yarra Valley
Open Studios provides an opportunity to discover,
learn, observe and be inspired - your curiosity will be
rewarded.
To those visiting us for the first time, we warmly
welcome you, and to those returning, welcome back.
Enjoy!
Tim Bassett & Tali Dalton
Blown Glass
Tim and Tali are internationally recognised glass artists
with a combined practice of over 30 years. Their individual
work is held in museum collections around the world
including the Australian National Art Glass Collection and
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Together they
founded Healesville Glass Blowing Studio. Tim specialises in
site-specific contemporary chandeliers whilst Tali’s focus is
on sculpture. They also collaborate on a range of functional
objects. They approach the vessel as a canvas on which to
explore colour and texture in a painterly manner, creating
abstract and expressionistic land and skyscapes. Their
mezzanine viewing area provides the opportunity to see,
first hand, the ancient art of glassblowing.
Painter
My work is mostly influenced by the surrounding
environment of the Yarra Valley: the mountains, changing
moods of the weather, the sky and the wildlife. I like
to sketch from nature and paint in the studio, trying to
bring the feeling of these things to the fore rather than a
realistic representation.
distinctive technique, colour and design. Her Yarra Valley
paintings display great understanding and familiarity of
subject. Christine journeys to outback Australia to paint
and absorb the intriguing colours and feelings of the
landscape she sees. She illustrated the bushfire recovery
children’s books: ‘Black Saturday was my Dad’s Birthday’
and ‘Can we go Home Now’. Christine has been awarded
Sioux Dollman
Mosaics/Ink/Painting
Sioux transforms rubbish into magic by creating
ferrocement garden sculptures with beautiful reflective
coatings of glass and mirror mosaics. As well as creating
sculptural work, Sioux also paints and draws, using
ink, paint, silver and gold leaf. Sioux captures the everchanging
beauty and magic of nature and beyond. She
also runs inspirational workshops at her studio nestled in
fairy ferns and flowers – it is an environment oozing with
creativity.
artists who have met over the last eight years at pastel
classes, tutored by local artist Janet Hayes, and drawing
sessions at Healesville Living and Learning Centre Studio.
winning artworks. Pastel is pure colour which can be soft
and light, as the name suggests, or rich and vibrant.
Clare James
Painting/Drawing
Di King
Painter
Clare is fascinated by the natural world. Her interest in
the ‘everyday’ (small birds, her pets, insects, weeds in the
garden), encourages her to examine the details around
her and highlights to others what she finds beautiful.
Clare’s background is in drawing (V.C.A) but her work is
primarily watercolour painting. Clare will launch her new
range of soft furnishings during Open Studios weekend.
Di’s work is of an impressionistic realist nature. Her main
aim when painting is to capture light, thus creating the
atmosphere suited to the subject. Di’s subject matter is
varied and includes nature, landscape and portraiture. Di
is particularly interested in painting the bush, gum trees,
cattlemen, and figures layered in fine drapery and satins.
Mim Kocher
Sculptor/Painter
Mim’s main love is creating small sculptures, using
recycled bases, modelling medium, engraving tools,
ceramic and acrylic paints. She is always a little sad when
parting with them, as they evolve into such characters.
Mim also paints on canvas using acrylic paint, inks,
powders and often resin. She loves the freedom of
experimenting with a variety of media.
Beverley Mann
Textiles
Beverley prefers to work with natural fibres, silk, wool, linen
and cotton. Beverley collects leaves and flowers from the
Yarra Valley to dye the fabric before transforming them
into eco friendly, biodegradable wearable art. Beverley’s
creative process is time rich - taking many weeks for an
imprint to appear on the fabric. A design is then developed
to suit the dyed fabric, often finished with hand stitching
and embellished with embroidery. Beverley also recycles
textiles into scarves, felted art and home wares. In winter
she turns to creating nuno felt and pre-felt into hats,
shawls and waistcoats. Beverley also tutors at workshops
on textile art at schools and businesses around Melbourne.
Daniel Mathers
Drawing/Painting
Daniel’s work usually begins with a chaotic scribble that
he slowly expands on. Through the use of humour, horror
and surrealism Daniel depicts the human state.
Lynne McDowell
Ceramics
Lynne’s studio in an old dairy overlooks the picturesque
Woori Yallock Valley. Inspiration from this beautiful
setting has led her to create a range of new colourful
high temperature glazes for her softly thrown tableware
as well as evolving designs for her signature porcelain
and gold ware. In contrast, Lynne continues to use
different hand formed techniques to create pieces for use
in the landscape. Whimsical plant totems, frog houses,
fountains, water catchers and majestic Queen Head
planters can all create a focal point for a garden
or balcony. Demonstrations throughout the day.
Margaret McLoughlin
Painter/Printmaker
Margaret’s creativity is expressed in a number of ways
including oil paintings on canvas, mixed-media, works on
paper and printmaking. Margaret’s experimental approach
to different media affords her work a unique freshness
and integrity. Her works are primarily expressions of
her passion for colour, pattern, texture and strong form.
Margaret is inspired by the ideal landscape, natural forms
and the figure. Her compositions aim to suggest a story
and are often presented as a complex arrangement of
shapes. The studio is elevated, capturing a magnificent
view of the surrounding Yarra Valley landscape.
Mary Newham
Painter/Mixed Media
Mary’s major source of inspiration is the beautiful Yarra
Valley. Oil painting on site enables her to capture the
weather and seasons and the subsequent variations in
light, colour and atmosphere. Recent travels to Europe
and Asia provided Mary with varied opportunities to work
in watercolour, these ideas being expanded with oils at
home in her studio. Mary also celebrates the powerful
grace of dressage horses using pastels, charcoal and
acrylics. Other artworks focus on the athleticism of the
polo pony and show jumper, or she expressively paints
and draws the characteristic gestures of unmounted
horses and other animals.
Justin Purser
Steel
Justin’s designs are based on free flowing organic forms
and patterns. He is inspired by the lines and forms of
nature like the growth of a plant, grass in the wind, the
flow of a river or a rolling landscape. He uses simple
bending and shaping techniques, a gas fired forage and
an old power hammer to create the components for
gates, balustrades and architectural details. Justin uses his
Architectural Ceramics and Design background to design
artistic objects for specific spaces. The majority of his
work comes from private commissions although he has
completed a number of public and commercial projects.
Maureen Purser
Ceramics/Textiles
Maureen’s life as a potter began 20 years ago at
Potters Cottage, Warrandyte. The pieces she creates
are functional stoneware pieces, randomly glazed in
blacks, blues and reds, representing the colours of the
landscape. Her studio ‘Cow Shed Pottery’ is in the milking
shed of an old dairy farm in Yarra Glen where she also
creates colourful scarves and products from alpaca and
sheeps wool.
Ted Secombe
Ceramics/Sculpture
Ted has been working as a professional artist for more
than 30 years. His specialist skills allow him to create
three-dimensional works in porcelain, stainless steel
and bronze from a studio situated on top of a hill with
magnificent views over the Yarra Valley. Ted’s long career
includes many exhibitions in Japan, Europe and USA and
he has works in over 30 permanent collections worldwide.
Raelene Sharp
Painter
Raelene is fascinated with light and how it falls across an
object or view. She uses it as a tool for effect, and also as a
significant addition to her work. Raelene uses this method
to its best advantage, and is most satisfied artistically,
when painting portraiture or figurative works. While she
specialises in portraiture and feels lucky to have painted
some well known and respected people, she does not limit
herself to this subject. Raelene has been a finalist in many
national portrait and art exhibitions most notably winning
the 2012 Archibald Packing Room Prize and the 2006
Shirley Hannan National Portrait Prize.
Katrina Spooner
Ceramics
Katrina’s sculptural forms are hand built, reflecting her
own personality. Many take on a whimsical nature and
often carry an underlying message. She is inspired by
her environment and its abundant palette of texture,
colour and shape. Katrina uses a variety of clay from
warm speckled earthly colours to stark white porcelain,
sometimes combining clays to create contrast and
interest. She loves to push the boundaries of her medium
allowing each piece to form its own unique pattern.
Christen Jo Stone
Natural Fibres/Wire/Metal/Paper/Semiprecious Stones
Jo’s creative journey has taken many turns but each
medium she has worked in has enriched the ones to follow.
Always there is evidence of her love of nature. Her work
is generally three dimensional with a fluid, organic feel,
whether in ceramics, textiles, jewellery or natural fibres.
Although Jo is known for her wirework jewellery, she has
returned to Healesville from interstate to work in natural
fibres, weeds and reeds, bark and flowers, gathered
entirely from the Yarra Valley. Her new studio gives her the
space to work in a variety of materials.
Ceramics
Alistair is a potter who works in a wide range of styles
and temperatures. His practise covers everything from
raku and pit firing, to earthenware, stoneware and
porcelain. Alistair trained in Japan and greatly admires the
beauty and techniques of the orient. It was in Japan that
he refined his skills in porcelain making. In recent years
Alistair has turned towards wood fire for more inspiration
and has built a wood firing kiln. He feels this is an integral
part of his creative journey that brings him back to the
basics of earth and fire.
David Williams
Ceramics
David’s commitment to crystalline glazed porcelain began
while completing a BA (Fine Art) at Phillip Institute (Melb)
in 1980. Each piece is individually handcrafted on a potter’s
wheel and then fired to a very high temperature in a kiln.
Crystal formation occurs during the cooling stage. The
crystal shapes and patterns vary from one firing to another
making each piece a unique collectors item. David’s work
has been exhibited in the National Gallery of Victoria and
Parliament House, Canberra and is represented in many
Ceramics
Laura’s work is mainly non-functional and very much
influenced by the natural environment; the shape and
texture of rocks, sand, earth and living things. Patterns
caused by erosion, weather or natural occurrences, or the
colours caused by these events capture her eye. Laura
is particularly influenced by the landscape of central and
outback Australia. Specialist firing techniques allow her to
capture the amazing colours of this region.
