The indexable carbide inserts<br />
must completely cover the cutting<br />
edges of the cutter tooth. The necessary<br />
number of indexable inserts<br />
and their arrangement depend<br />
on the dimensions of the<br />
inserts and on the size of the gear.<br />
To render the pre-cutting of the<br />
gear optimal for skive hobbing or<br />
grinding, the carbide hobs with indexable<br />
inserts can be made so<br />
that they produce both a root<br />
clearance cut (protuberance) and a<br />
chamfer on the gear (see fig. below).<br />
In the range from module 5 to<br />
module 10 each cutter tooth only<br />
holds one insert, which covers the<br />
entire flank length.<br />

From module 11 onwards, each<br />
flank is fitted with an indexable insert<br />
offset to the opposite flank. In<br />
special cases, versions with a<br />
single insert covering each flank<br />
are also possible with these module<br />
