Grease: The CBSC Musical!
In October as I’m sure you’ve all heard (and possibly seen?) Miss Warburton
put on a huge scale production of Grease at the school. We’d been rehearsing
since April and the pressure was really on to pull off an amazing performance…
and from the reviews, I can safely say it was that at the very minimum! To be
honest with you (it’s the least you can expect) during the day of the first
performance, we did our first full dress rehearsal in front of some primary
school children, and that’s when we really got it together. But don’t let that
reduce your estimations of everyone that was involved in pulling off an
outstanding show. The singing was sensational; the dancing was dreamy; the
music was marvellous; the acting was amazing; and the popcorn was actually repulsive, really bitty
and dry. The director, Miss Warburton, wrote in the programme as her director’s note:
“Grease has been an absolutely sensational
experience; working with such keen and
positive students has been amazing! I am
thrilled that staff and students have worked
together to make this show what it is today.
This show will have you clapping, laughing and
singing along to those classic songs we all
know and love. It is infectious, upbeat and over
the top! The cast play characters straight out
of the 50’s and have a set to match. Let the
students wow you with their all singing, all
dancing and acting bonanza and watch out for
the chorus. Will they have you up on your feet
bopping to the music and having a ball? ’Cause
that’s what it’s about after all!!”
As she expresses, it was an ‘absolutely sensational experience’ for everyone – hours upon hours of
rehearsing (and having a whole lot of fun) really paid off, and all the cast were sad to see it end,
but ecstatic to feel it succeed.
Of course it wasn’t just our boys who performed…we managed to hunt out some amazing female
talents, and I think
this is what gave it
the edge. And
because they had so
much fun and loved
the school, we now
have two extra girls in
the sixth form:
Hannah and Sammie
(right). Or Frenchie
and Sandy if you like.
Just proves what an
infectious and vibrant
community we work
in – the sixth form is
just going from
strength to strength.
Well done to all our staff, students and parents who raised £850 for Children in Need.
Our Primaries…. Just look at those Smiles!!
During October CBSC hosted two Year 4
Aussie Rules Tournaments for over 280 pupils
from our local primary schools. The event
was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed
by all staff, students and parents. However,
the credit for the event must go to the ‘dream
team’ of Year 12 students who were fantastic
all day and were involved with the coaching,
officiating and running of the tournament.
The students were a credit to themselves and
to the school. The year 12’s involved were:
Adam Barker, Thomas Barney, Daniel Brooker, Kevin
Gallagher, Tom Gartell, Joe Holt, Jos Iles Adbi Ismail,
Kieron Lee, Callum McLoughlin, Dolan Montgomery, Billy Nicholls, Kevin Oti-Akenten, Thomas Reeve, Dean Stevens, Jordan
Naraine, Lewis Brackstone.
The Year 3 Dance Festivals were a Thriller!!
During December CBSC hosted three Year
3 Dance Festivals for over 260 pupils from
our local Primary schools. Working in small
groups the pupils learnt and developed the
dance sequence to Thriller before
performing it to an audience. The event
was a huge success and was thoroughly
enjoyed by all staff, students and parents.
A special thank you must go to Jo
Warburton for all her hard work and help
with the event. A big thank you must also
go to all our students who helped out -
(Tommy Bowdary, Joe Keeley, Charlie Reynolds,
Adam Barker, Tom Barney, Daniel Brooker, Kevin Gallagher, Tom Gartell, Joe Holt, Jos Iles, Adbi Ismail, Kieron Lee, Callum
McLoughlin, Dolan Montgomery, Billy Nicholls, Kevin Oti-Akenten, Tom Reeve, Dean Stevens, Eamon Carpenter, Tom
Hatton, Ashton Hockham-Marshall, Matt Lloyd, Joe Martingell, Max McDonnell, Andrew Scott, Paul Taylor, James Terrell and
Matt Weller) – all feedback has been extremely positive and they were a credit to themselves and the
school.
Borneo Car Boot Sale
Students from the School Council have nominated to support the Borneo Trip by raising money
through a boot sale. The date has been set for Saturday 27 th February 2010, which we hope
will be the perfect date after the New Year where you can have a good clear out and prepare for
Spring. So any unwanted Christmas presents and items that you would want to sell and help raise
money for the school, please keep hold of and sell or donate to our car boot sale. More details will
follow in the next newsletter and on our website. Look forward to your support.
Christmas Hampers
The spirit of Christmas was alive and strong at
Carshalton Boys as, once again, students worked
together to think of others rather than just themselves
to bring in a collection of items for our Christmas
Hamper activity. Students from mainly Year 7
contributed many things over the last six weeks to
produce one of our best harvest collections. The
winning Tutor Group was 7F bringing in the most items
which totalled over 150 tin cans and packets etc. This
year Matthew Whiteman in 7F has been brilliant and
broke a long standing Car Boys record for the
individual student to bring in the most items. The record stood at 100 but Matt has been victorious
with 132 items. With the help of some Year 8’s as well, we will make a fantastic contribution to
not only our local elderly community but also to the local Sutton Food Bank which will help those
who are going through difficult times to keep going until they are able to get back on their feet.
Many thanks go to parents and tutors for all your hard work and effort in encouraging and
supporting students to bring item in. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year.
BedZED
On the 12 th November, 26 Year 10 Geography pupils
had the opportunity to visit BedZED (Beddington Zero
Energy Development), and talk to the architects and
project managers involved in this state of the art
development. This is the first UK development of its
kind. The aim being, to build homes that produce zero
carbon emissions by embracing alternative sources of
energy and by incorporating effective insulation and
cooling systems into homes. “Much better than
Grand Designs”. This was an opportunity not to be
missed. For information about BedZED Visitor Centre
Year 11
Art
The Year 11 Art pupils sat their practical mock exam recently. The students had 4 weeks to
produce research, drawings and developmental work based on a choice of exam questions. They
then had 1 day in the art room to create a final outcome. Alex Harriott’s painting was based on the
topic of Music and painted in the style of Pop Art. A display of Year 11 art work will be on show
later in the year.
“5 Week Plan”
This term the Year 11 boys have been working under a new 5 Week Plan, and are sitting their Mock
exams in a number of subjects. If the last 5 weeks are an indication they will be very successful, as
the boys have been superb. Behaviour, attendance, engagement and progress made has been
phenomenal and all of the boys and staff are rightly proud of their achievement. Special mention
must go to the nominated students for progress and attitude a list of names can be found on the
school website www.carshaltonboys.org.
Mrs P Ashcroft
Citizenship Challenge Day
On the 16 th of October all yr11 boys
embarked on their first challenge day by
auctioning their Citizenship Campaign.
This required boys to work in groups and
design where appropriate petitions,
questionnaires, surveys, letters to power
makers, power points and posters to
promote their chosen issue. This piece of
work is worth 60% of their final mark and
16/30 marks are related to how well they
work on this campaign in their groups
independently of the teacher and the
difference that they make to their issue.
Some fantastic work was done on the day
and the feedback from the boys was
glowing, it was clear they gained a lot
from the experience.
Mrs J Molloy
Year 10
Academic progress has been very positive since half term and you should now be in receipt of a
report detailing current grades for your son in all his subjects. The boys have all been made aware
of the grades they are currently working at and have them written into their school planners. With
the wide range of different courses that our boys now follow it can sometimes be hard for parents
to keep a track of which subject is GCSE, which is BTEC and which may be OCR Nationals, as well
as what the grade progression is in each of these qualifications! If you wish to help your son
improve his grades through extra study at home, but are in any way unclear as to how he is being
assessed in his subjects, please do not hesitate to contact me on blaker@carshaltonboys.org or
020 8644 7325.
You will, I am sure, also be aware that your sons will be going on two week work experience
placements in the second half of the Summer Term. This has in the past proved an invaluable
experience for our students and can often lead into a permanent work placement after the boys
leave school. We have been stressing to all students this term how vital it is that they try to secure
their placement as soon as possible because all Year 10 students in Sutton schools will be on work
experience around the same time and places at desirable companies will snapped up quickly.
Pleasingly lots of students have already secured fantastic placements, but if you and your son are
still unsure about how to get the exact type of work experience he is looking for, please contact
Sharon James in the school office to discuss further work experience possibilities.
Finally, we are both sad and delighted! that Ms Storbeck 10 Sinclair Tutor will be leaving us for a
while as she goes on maternity leave. She has tutored Sinclair since they joined the school in year
7 and has been a fantastic tutor to all of her students. We wish her and Mr Greffrath all the best of
luck and health with their imminent arrival. Mr Casselle who has worked at the school previously
has returned and will be looking after 10S in Miss Storbeck’s absence.
Thank you once again for your ongoing support of your son’s education and I wish you all a very
happy, safe and maybe for once even a snowy Christmas!
Year 10 Work Related Learning – Boys learning to knit!
Miss E Mcdonnell’s class are currently participating in an important Communication Project which
breaks down barriers between the old and young. Our Year 10 boys have been learning interview
and conversational skills, and last week visited a sheltered housing unit to find out all about the
lives of the residents. Today the boys hosted a return visit where our special guests enjoyed
teaching our boys how to knit. They were as always, perfect gentlemen, and were so keen to
continue knitting they asked if they could stay another 15 minutes. A really heartwarming
moment. Hopefully by the end of next week, the boys will be wearing their beautifully knitted
mittens!
Year 9
A great start to Year 9. The Inter Tutor Quiz
is being as keenly contested as ever. The In
It To Win It Cup and the Individual Rewards
League are focussing more on attendance,
attainment and effort, linked into their
reports. A large number of the lads have
already started Key Stage 4 courses, be it
GCSE or BTEC qualifications, in which they
are doing really well.
The next big step is choosing their Options.
Pupils were given a survey to fill out so that
they are now aware of what courses are
available to them next year. They must
ensure that they start thinking of what they
would like to do and find more information
out about the different courses so that they
can make an informed decision when it
comes to taking their Options in the new
year.
I wish everyone a good Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Mr A Brown
Anti–Crime Workshop
On the 20 th of November we had
Outside Chance come and talk to all
Year 9’s about where Crime leads you
and the effects it has on individuals and
society. The message was hard hitting
and clear – crime does not pay. Here
are some comments from two of our
boys about the presentation, “I think
this session was quite helpful to us
teenagers to have a better idea of
where we would end up if were to join a gang”,
Anthony Alton. “I thought the session was very good
and helpful to our future because
now we know what way to go. The presenter did a
great job”, Ferdos Ariyaee.
Ian from Outside Chance showing the
realities of what being a Youth
Offender’s Unit would mean.
Year 8
I am pleased to say that Year 8 collectively
continue to develop at an impressive rate.
This term has seen a real improvement in
achievement in both English and Maths
attainment across the entire year group and
record number of nominations from all
departments for subject awards which will be
presented in the end of term Year 8
Assembly. These are rewards the boys richly
deserve for all their hard work.
The focus this term has been on the
importance of punctuality and attendance
along with homework and attitudes to study.
These are particularly important as some of
the boys have already started on GCSE courses some two years earlier than usual. A further
twenty boys gave up their own time after school to give the paper numeracy ALAN test a go. I
would like to praise the maturity and responsibility shown by these boys who are working hard to
gain an extra qualification in their own time.
Please ensure that your son seeks to maximise his attendance as all studies show a strong link
between this and academic achievement. Homework and upcoming revision will build on the work
undertaken in the classroom leading to a greater chance of success in the future.
I wish you and your sons a Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
Mr P Farr and Mrs S Tyson
Child Soldiers Assembly
On the 27 th of November the pressure group “Invisible
Children” came and spoke to all Year 8’s about the
problem of child soldiers in Northern Uganda. This was to
back up work done in Citizenship lessons under the topic
Human Rights. Year 8’s are encouraged to log on to the
website http://www.invisiblechildren.com/campaigns and
sign the petition to end this practice. Postcards putting
pressure on the UN to do more are also being sent.
Science have fingers crossed for Rare Flair Year 8
GCSE groups and Soon to be Parents…
This is a photo of one of our Year 8 GCSE groups with
their teacher, Ms Storbeck. 88 boys started Core Science
GCSE in September 2009 in four groups. They will
complete their GCSE in year 9. In
November they took their first
multiple choice examination. They
need to get 24 out of 40 to get a
Grade C and this group all think that
they have managed that. They get
their results in mid January just about
the same time as Ms Storbeck's and
Mr Greffrath’s baby girl will be making
her first appearance.
A long wait for everyone!
Year 7
The new and largest ever, Year 7 have made a fantastic
start this term, their enthusiasm and commitment to the
school is clear and evident in the successes which they
have already achieved. The Year 7 Football Team have
made a great start to the season and look set to be the
strongest team the school has seen! Congratulations to
Ryan Bywater for winning this term’s Jack Petchey
award. This award is given to the student who has
impressed staff the most and made an outstanding
commitment to the school. Ryan is going to spend the
money on buying some customised nets for the school
goal posts (as you can tell Ryan is a star player in the
Year 7 Football Team).
On Friday the 16 th October the year group went on their
first school trip to Mountfitchet. The boys were fantastic and enjoyed taking a trip back to 1066
England. Many of the boys tried on the chainmail and got into the spirit of the day; they especially
enjoyed mixing with the various animals roaming around in the grounds.
It’s been fantastic to see how many of our students have
thrown themselves into school life and have offered their
help and support within the school. Recently we had
many of our students help various departments with our
Open Evening; the boys were a real credit to the school,
with many of the parents commenting on how impressed
they were with our students. Alongside this we have
had some of our Year 7s helping with the school
production of Grease; on the night the ushers looked
fantastic in their baby blue bow ties, and helped with the
smooth running of the show
Finally our ‘Adopt a Year 7’ scheme has got off to a
flying start. Each Year 7 student has now been buddied
up with a Sixth Form student; they completed their first
challenge which was a poetry writing competition. The
poems were a real credit to the boys, and their parents,
with an overwhelmingly large number of entries being
about the students’ parents and how much they admire
them.
Well done boys, we hope you have a fantastic Christmas
and look forward to seeing all of your successes in the new year ☺
Sports Desk
Rugby
It has been a very busy term for the Year 7 Rugby Team with a multitude of training sessions,
tournaments and Saturday morning fixtures.
With over 40 boys trying out and attending
training sessions, places on the team have
been hard to come by and picking a starting
15 even more difficult. There has been
success in both Rugby Union and Rugby
League which shows the array of talent
within the year group. In Rugby Union,
following on from the first half term the boys
put some excellent Saturday morning
performances against Glyn and Ernest Bevan
as well as facing some fantastic Rugby
schools such as Wimbledon College and
Dulwich College in the Surrey Schools
Tournament. In Rugby League some of the
boys were experiencing this for the first time
but won one game and drew another two at
their first tournament after only a few weeks training. Well done to all the guys involved and lets
keep it up after Christmas. Mr Earley
The Year 8 Rugby Team have been steadily improving. They have attended the Surrey Schools
County Festival hosted by Whitgift School. This was a big eye opener for the team as they took
some heavy defeats to Whitgift, Reigate Grammar and Esher Church of England schools. The team
took this in a very positive way with more boys attending both Wednesday and Thursday training
sessions and an improved team spirit. The team have also attended a Rugby League Festival
hosted by South London Storm Rugby League Club. The Year 8’s were very competitive in this
festival, winning one game, drawing two and losing just one pool stage. The team have got one
last Sutton League Union game coming up against Harris Academy. Good luck to the team in this
game. Mr Wheatley
The Year 9 rugby Team have started the season well with a victory in the Mitcham Blitz
tournament but have since struggled for form against higher standard opposition. So far we’ve
had 30 players represent the year group and more are always welcome to attend. Training
sessions are now running regularly on a Wednesday evening and we all need to attend and work
hard. Mr Sheppard
The Year 10 Rugby Team have played a number of fixtures this year and have performed very
well so far. In the Rugby Union, they are undefeated in the Sutton league and won the Blitz
tournament at the start of the year against all the local schools. However it was a different story in
the Daily Mail Cup where they came up against a much stronger team in the first round and were
eliminated after a hard fought match. In the Rugby League, they have played one tournament
which consisted of teams from Croydon, Surrey and Lambeth. The boys narrowly lost one out of
their five pool games (2 tries to 1) to the eventual tournament winners Ravenswood which put
them in 3 rd place for the final standings. With a bit more commitment to training sessions, these
boys have the potential to go a long way. Mr Wilson
The Senior Rugby Team have made substantial improvements this year and are looking forward
to an important series of games in the New Year. We haven’t been able to field our full, first choice
side so far this year but all those who have played have done so with passion, determination and
pride. A strong performance against Graveney recently is to be followed up with a game against
Wilsons before Christmas. We then play St Cecilia’s, Emmanuel, Graveney, Sutton Grammar and
Greenshaw twice in a matter of weeks. Hard work, positive attitude and a strong team ethic will
see us through. Mr Middleton
Football
It has been a busy and exciting half term for the Year 7 footballers. 65 pupils have represented
the school this term. The first team have progressed through to the third round of the London Cup,
quarter finals of the Surrey Cup and the quarter finals of the Sutton Cup as well as doing well in
the Sutton League. There has also been fixtures set up for the second and third teams this term,
but due to the bad weather in the last few weeks many have been cancelled, but will be rearranged
in the new year. The one fixture that has been played by the second team so far saw the boys give
a dominant display in a 10-1 victory over Sutton Grammar. The boys still have two fixtures
remaining this term. This term will also see a first for the Year 7 footballers when we field five
teams against Wilsons. Best of luck and well done to all the boys involved this term. Keep up the
effort and commitment. Mr Lambert and Mr Sims
The Year 8 season has begun with much promise for the students with many games now being
competed in well by the players. The Carshalton fight and determination is beginning to appear in
more and more of our fixtures demonstrating the belief now within the side. Notable performances
by Captain John Barfoot, Ryan Gondoh, Jack Judge, Barry Opitz and the emerging Dominic Hustler
have meant some solid and creative performances from the players. One fantastic win over Boxhill
School has got the hunger back into the students and with many others trying to force their way
back into the side, the New Year is looking very rosy. Mr Ashdown
The Year 9 Team have a made a fantastic start to the new season, for the last two years the
team has struggled but this year the squad has played out of their skin. They have now won two
drawn two and lost two in the Sutton league, have reached the Semi-final of the Sutton Cup and
are in the last 16 of the London cup. Special mention must go to Luke Wright at centre back, Pat
Brady at left back, Ed Mason Captain, Ben Ryder Striker and Andrew Kennedy who have all played
a part in cheering me up this season, well done boys and keep up the good work in 2010. Mr
Avery
The Year 10 Team have started a new selection process this season and this has now seen meant
we are starting to function as a good football side. Charlie Saunders deserves a special mention as
his efforts as Captain have been immense. He is starting to develop a strong team ethic and the
others in the team are responding to his leadership. We look forward to continued improvements
in the New Year. Mr Robinson
The Year 11 Team have continued exactly where they have left off, playing some champagne
football. After a series of tough cup fixtures I am pleased to announce the boys are progressing
well in both the Surrey and London Cups. The team have gone from strength to strength and are
now looking real contenders in both competitions. I would just like to say well done to all the team
and keep up the great work!! Mr Bosdet
The 6 th Form are midway through their
season and are still fighting for cup
silverware on 3 fronts at the time of
writing – semi finals of the Sutton Cup,
quarter finals of the Surrey Cup and last
16 of the London Cup. We currently have
a healthy mixture of Year 12 and Year 13
students representing the school team.
For year 13 students this will sadly be
their last year representing the school at
football, but hopefully we will be able to
send them off into the big wide world with
a medal around their necks if we can manage to bring home some silverware in the coming
months! Mr Laker
Basketball
The Year 7 boys have been working hard on their skills and game play this half term. A special
shout should go to Jack Tyson ‘PRO’ who has come in and coached the team over the past month.
With his hard work and dedication, the boys should be in good shape for the tournaments which
will come thick and fast in the New Year. We are always looking for more players so please get
yourselves along boys. Mr Lambert
After a slow start to the year the Year 8 basketball team is up and running with an ever-increasing
number of boys turning up to training. This is good to see with our first fixture before Christmas
fast approaching. After the well deserved break the games will be coming thick and fast in both
league and cup competitions and the boys will need to be on the top of their game. A special shout
has to go to Sam Plezak who has hardly missed a session and has been instrumental in getting
new boys involved in the team. Well done to him and all the guys, let’s keep it up. Mr Earley
The Year 9 Basketball Team has made a sound start with a decent performance against
Wimbledon College and a much improved showing at Wilsons narrowly losing out to some late
baskets. The team has more games to play and is still in the Sutton Cup hoping to progress
through and keep on improving under the joint captaincy of Tyler West and Connor O’Brian.
Mr Sims
This season is looking promising for the Senior Basketball Team with many quality players
striving for success. Charles Prendergast is leading the team this year and has proved a
motivational figure within the side defending and attacking with precision and tenacity. Jamie Otoo
and Darien Moore were pivotal in success over Tiffin with support from Nathaniel Kirby Miller, Joe
Lawrence. However, one student tore up the record books with an outstanding individual display
against Hollyfield scoring 33 points including some pin point 3’s to win what turned out to be a
tightly contested game. Carshalton edged this one 43 – 38 and now have a record of 2 wins and 2
losses with many more games still to play. It’s within your grasp boys!
Mr Ashdown
Table Tennis
With the turn of the weather and the continued plugging of
the Table Tennis Club we have seen even more numbers
turn out this half term for Key Stage 3 Table Tennis. With a
wealth of talent coming through from all three year groups.
This half term has seen a number of boys represent the
school in the Borough Team Championships. All the boys
performed very well, this was topped with an outstanding
and dominant display from Mark Holloway who won all seven
of his matches. Well done to all boys who have represented
the school this term. There are always places for more
players so please get along. Mr Lambert and Mr Earley
One Key Stage 4 fixture so far this year, where we took 8 boys to compete in the borough
championships. Well done to all the boys who took part, unfortunately the team was not as strong
as some of the competition and therefore did not win overall, however most of the boys managed
to pick up individual wins through the night. Well done boys. Mr Wheatley
Fitness Club
Fitness Club has taken off this term with an average of 25 pupils every day taking responsibility for
their own health and well being. Some pupils have attended every day since the start of November
which shows they are committed to a healthy and active lifestyle. On the back of this tremendous
attendance, we are starting a 50, 100 and 150 club whereby pupils will receive an award or prizes
for attending 50, 100 and 150 sessions in a term, 2 terms and whole year respectively. This
scheme is open to all pupils of any fitness level so please encourage them to come along to the
HLU every lunchtime. Mr Wilson
Morning Fitness Club
This Club runs from 7.30am to 8.00am, and is a simple anaerobic circuit
designed to work close to your maximum heart rate. Pupils who attend will
work for 30 seconds and then have 30 seconds rest completing a mix of
sprints, press ups and sit ups. A pupil who requires special mention in this
group is Adam Later (Year 7). He has attended 95% of the sessions run so
far and is continuing to progress his fitness. This added fitness has helped
him secure his place in the All Star Year 7 Football Team. Keep up the
good work Adam. The club is open to any pupil who wants to improve at
their own rate, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Mr Wheatley
Parkour Club
CBSC continues to lead the way with our newly introduced Parkour Club.
Parkour is a new craze for young people to express themselves by making
their way along a route, negotiating obstacles as if in an emergency
situation. It requires agility, strength, balance, power, nerves of steel and
Carshalton Boys are loving it.
Dodgeball
Dodgeball continues its popularity at CBSC with Year 7 and 8 pupils
loving lunch time and after school clubs. We have played 1 tournament
so far in which the Hawks and Swans both did really well. We’ve got
some more games booked in for the New Year. Come along and have a
go, Monday after school or Tuesday lunchtime.
Year 11 AS PE
Well done to the Year 11 AS Level PE boys who recently took a mock
examination. They are taking the qualification a year early as they
excelled in their GCSE PE final exam in Year 10. All pupils passed their
mock examination at E grade or better, and 19 pupils achieved a C
Grade or better with 12 pupils excelling at grade A or B. This bodes well
for the future. Keep up the great work boys. The other two cohorts of A level pupils in Years 12
and 13 continue working hard and are preparing for January examinations. There has been a
noticeable improvement in their work ethic, demonstrated by their approach to their Challenge Day
tasks.
