Goodbye & Good Luck Year 11!
On the 22 May there was a Year 11 Leaving
Assembly in the main hall. When I first
got there, I was surprised by how many year
11s that were preparing to leave school.
The Year 11 Tutors were sitting in a line at
the front of the hall and one by one they
spoke about how great their tutor groups
had been. The Year 11 Tutors were Ms Mullali,
Mr Starling, Ms Langdon, Mr Avery,
Mr Penn, Mr Tolley, Mr Clark and Ms
Codd. The Head of Year 11 was Mr Brown.
After each one spoke, they awarded three
pupils with awards.
After the tutor’s speeches, the Year 11s were
entertained by 2 Year 11 student bands.
They had food on their tables to keep them
from getting hungry during the assembly.
But even before the bands came on stage I
could tell that a few of the Year 11s were
going to miss a few things about school;
their friends, teachers or even just the
school itself.
Finally after the assembly, Mrs Tyson at reception
handed out the Year 11 Year Books.
Everyone brought one and asked the teachers
to sign them. This so they could keep
one last memory of all the years they spent
at this school.
In a funny moment, as the students left,
some of the Year 11 tutors said they were
leaving with them!
The Sporty Swan staff wish the Year 11s the best
of luck with their up-coming GCSE exams, and
for the future after 5 excellent years at CBSC.
Ex-Student Returns to CSBC
By James Howarth
On Wednesday 6 June a former
pupil of Carshalton
Boys Sports College, John
Luckhurst, 44, came for a
visit and a tour of the school.
Mr Luckhurst had many professions,
when he left our
school he didn’t leave with
as many grades as what he
had wished, but after working
hard after school and going
through law school he
soon became a successful Defence
Barrister.
Mr Luckhurst spoke at the
Year 10 assembly about his
job and how he got there. He
also visited a number of different
classes to talk about
his life after CSBC.
He lives near Maidstone in
Kent, ‘It’s a very pleasant
area because I live near the
country side’ he said.
here today) was his form
tutor.
When Mr Luckhurst was
here, ‘The school was very
strict and also had some
quite old fashioned teachers
that used to wear
[university] gowns.’ There
are some differences and
similarities between what
the school was like then
and what it’s like today,
‘apart from the new buildings,
the layout is still the
same. It still feels well run
and organised, and the old
buildings feel the same.
The metal work room has
not changed one bit! Lastly
the school uniform is exactly
the same except that
the senior students wear different
ties.’
Mr Luckhurst offered this advice
to the current students of
CSBC: ‘My advice would be
to concentrate whilst you have
the opportunity and to not
waste time at school. Virtually
anything in life is achievable.’
When asked if the school had
changed for the better? He replied,
‘From the point of view
of the facilities, it has improved
remarkably, otherwise
it still has the same nice feel
about it.’
Mr Luckhurst currently works
as a Barrister for Five
Pump Court, which is
a set of Chambers in
Temple, London.
He was a pupil at our school
for five and half years. His
original tutor group was
Rutherford and Mr R
Walker (who still teaches
Who Do You CLIC With?
By Ms McDonnell
The CLIC (Carshalton Learning
Inclusion Centre) is located in the
T Block. Ms Smith and Ms Antrobus
run the CLIC, which Ms Smith
started just over four years ago.
The CLIC works in two main ways;
to provide an ISR (Internal Support
Room) and IER (Internal Exclusion
Room) for students at CSBC.
Some of the types of students
helped by CLIC this year are those
who’ve been in trouble and need a
few days ‘time out’ of regular
school, those who just need someone
to talk to – also known as ‘oneto-one’
counselling, and those who
get help through student/teacher
A group of Yr 8s were lucky
enough to be selected to go
Kingswood Centre on the Isle
of Wight.
A group of 32 students went on
Sunday 13 May in the morning
and returned on Wednesday.
Ms Gaylor had applied for
some funds which was available
through the Mayor’s London
Challenge Fund. The School
was successful in the application
and this was used to fund
this trip.
We arrived in the afternoon
moderation sessions. CLIC also
offers in class support where
needed.
Some recent successes from
CLIC this year have been the
two Anger Management
Classes, successfully completed
by a number of Year 7 and 8
students to help them keep
their tempers under control in
the school.
and were soon into the activities.
The days were very busy with lots
of different activities such as
archery, laser quest, gladiator,
quad biking, abseiling, ‘Leap of
Faith’, zip line, swimming, Canoe
capsize and much more.
Mr Middleton, Mr Boake & Ms
Antrobus came with us and took
CLIC has some very different
rules for students who’ve been
put in IER. They must complete
all their work, they can’t
talk or get out of their seat and
they MUST show respect to
everyone and be on their best
behaviour. If you don’t follow
the rules when you are in the
CLIC IER, you could be excluded!
Quite a few staff and students visit
the CLIC regularly for different
reasons, and all of them get help
there or information on how to
sort their problems out. CLIC is a
valuable part of our school.
If you’d like to visit CLIC to see
what it’s like or just to talk to
someone about what’s bothering
you, pop over to see Ms Smith or
7 & 8 Exams
By Kenny Temilade
In the last weeks the year 7 and 8s
had their exams.
Both year groups were broken into
CEFM and NPRS. Everyone got to
the right exams. In a matter of time
the atmosphere was ‘heads down - lets
do well’.
The reactions when students finished
were varied; Did I do well? Did I pass?
What is my teacher going to do with
my results? A math’s mental test was
the only problem as the tape was
mixed up with different paper
Mr R. Walker, the Exams and Performance
co-ordinator said, “They
were full of anticipation.”
Science Museum Trip
By Shaquille Plunkett
On the 15 and 25 of May two groups of
year 8's caught the train to the Science
Museum in London.
The group that went on the 15th visited
the ‘Energy Gallery’ and ‘Launch Pad’,
while the second group saw 'What made
the modern world?', 'Space' and ‘Launch
Pad’. All the boys went to an IMAX show
and saw 'Bugs 3D'.
Mr.Ahmed, Science Teacher, said, “All
the boys had a questionnaire to complete
and worked in their small groups with
their group leader to see who the best
group was at the end of the day.”
“In the IMAX we had lots of hands in the
air, touching nothing, trying to figure out
the 3D effect. And one of our teachers fell
asleep.”
All the boys behaved really well on both
days and the school even received an
of 2007!
Mrs Speck - English Department
“I got married on 31 March 2007, in Welkom,
South Africa. Franc and I had an amazing
day, particularly as we both had big family reunions
at the same time. Franc and I have been together for
9 years and lived in London for 4 years before we got
married.”
Mr O’Brien - P.E. Department
“On April 14th I returned to Australia to get married
in the place where I grew up, on the Central Coast of
NSW. Clare and I had a fantastic day and even put a
London theme to the evening reception. Yep, we are
Mr. & Mrs. O'Brien now.”
Mr Avery - P.E. Department & Miss Fraser -
Art Department
“Mr Avery and I got married in Queenstown New
Zealand on April 7th 2007. We had a excellent day
with my family in the gorgeous sun and scenery. Mr
Avery was blown away by how beautiful New Zealand
is but was disappointed he didn’t see any Hobbits.
We are going to do it all again in London to
Me and about 14 others
turned up at the sports hall,
backpacks, ready to go on
our practical expedition for
the Duke of Edinburgh.
We all got in the mini-bus
and set off on the very long
journey.
After the long journey, we
arrived at Exmoor. We were
camping in a farmer’s field
with an amazing view of a
valley towards the top of the
camp. The view was stunning!
On the first day we all had a
go on the rope swings over
the river to the left of the
camp, we then set up our
tents, which actually isn’t
too hard (well not as hard as
people make out!). We also
was really good fun!
The day after that we had
the dreaded fifteen mile
uphill and on rough terrain,
but was breathtakingly beautiful,
with wonderful views
of valleys, hills, forests and
other things I could ramble
on about for ages!
Our group did quite well,
we only got lost twice! We
spent ages walking through
a field of sheep, everywhere
you looked, as far as you
could see – there were
sheep. Not to mention their
droppings which ruined
quite a lot of people’s walking
boots!
The walk wasn’t too bad,
everyone’s feet ached like
It felt like we were in the
It was a great relief when we
walked around the final corner
couldn’t wait to sit down.
When everyone got back some
people had a shower (Others
Some people sat down outside
We were all quite disappointed
everyone was glad to get home
A great trip!
Lewis Hamilton Wins American Grand Prix
By Stuart Keaney and George Mann
Lewis Hamilton won the
American Grand Prix on
Sunday 17 June.
Lewis Hamilton has burst
onto Formula One, unlike
any rookie before him. Every
single race so far he has been
in a Podium position. The
race took place at the Indianapolis
track.
People say that he is an exact
comparison to Tiger Woods.
This is because like Tiger,
Lewis has been a winner at
every level on his way to the
big time. The public have
gone ‘Hamilton crazy’ as the
British racer gets better and
better in his career.
Ms Affleck from the Science
Department thought ‘Lewis is
going to be the next Michael
Schumacher.’ Ms Affleck also
said that ‘he should be with
Ferrari instead of McLaren
because Ferrari is the best.’
With the direction he is heading
in, he will be better than
Michael Schumacher in the
next couple of years.
People from all over the nation
are asking themselves,
will Lewis Hamilton win the
drivers' title in his first year?
Most people thought the
track was very good, including
Ms Affleck as she said
‘There were very good corners
which were hard for
the racers to get around.’
Indianapolis is the oldest
track that is still in use today.
It was built in 1908
and cost $75,000 which is
£37,634. The track was
made out of 3.2 million
bricks so the nickname
‘Brickstone Yard’ was born.
But now the track is made
out of crushed stone and
tar but it has a small strip
of bricks to commemorate
how it once was.
Lewis Hamilton was in first
for almost the whole race
and no other racer was a
challenge for him.
Callum Morris (9E) said,
‘The American Grand Prix
wasn’t as good as the Canadian
Grand Prix because it
wasn’t as exciting.’ Many
people thought the same as
there wasn’t as many
crashes in the race.
Get Fit @ The HLU
By Taiwo Temilade
Every school day, 5 days a
week there is a new Fitness
Club being run by the P.E staff
at lunch times. Located in the
Healthy Living Unit in the
Sports Hall and it’s for students
to use to build up their
fitness.
Quite a few boys use the facilities
and machines in there already.
Sam Tidey, Year 8 said,
“It’s good because it helps you
get fit for the sport you play.”
