A FOUNDATION FOR READING
Created in 1981 by Spanish publisher and businessman
Germán Sánchez Ruipérez, the Fundación Germán Sánchez
Ruipérez is a non-profit institution which is dedicated to
the organization of diverse educational and cultural
programmes.
It focuses mainly on reading in its different guises offering
a vast range of promotional, research and experimental
programmes which are offered to librarians, educational
centres and families.
TECHNICAL CENTRES
In order to provide stable and efficient working bases the
Fundación Germán Sánchez Ruipérez has built its own
centres situated in three different locations: a rural
community, a provincial capital and the national capital.
Together these locations make up culturally and
geographically representative cross section of Spain.
In the rural location of Peñaranda de Bracamonte,
Salamanca (the birthplace of our founder and principal
patron) the Centro de Desarrollo Sociocultural has been
operating since 1986. More recently (2006) in this town
the Foundation establish the Centro Internacional de
Tecnologías Avanzadas para el Medio Rural. Both centres
offer training in very different fields, with emphasis placed
on the use of technology in reading.
In 1985, the Foundation created the Centro Internacional
del Libro Infantil y Juvenil in Salamanca, the capital of the
province. Due to the variety and volume of its collection as
well as its programmes, it is the most important specialised
children´s library in Spain. Its work is complemented by its
research and documentation centre, also the most
important centre of its kind in existence in this country, as
well as the training it offers in the form of courses,
meetings, seminars and conferences.
In 1981, el Centro de Estudios, Análisis y Debate was set
up in Spain’s capital, Madrid. This is the seed of the
Foundation´s most ambitious project to date. The Centro
Internacional para la Investigación, el Desarrollo y la
Innovación de la Lectura/Casa del Lector (scheduled
opening: 2011), will complete the structural design of the
Foundation. This new centre will provide an enviable place
from which to learn about and promote new (as well as
traditional) forms of reading in a constantly changing
society.
The work carried out by each of these centres can be found

www.childrensliteracylab.org. These pages also hold
information about many of the specific services that the
Foundation offers on the Internet. One in particular stands
out– it is called S.O.L. www.sol-e.com. It is the world´s first
site specialised in children’s and young adult’s books in
Spanish, and also offers other related information.

The work of the Foundation is based on these two
