Moving Forward 

Wow! The year is really moving along. 

Joan and I have been happily busy each and 

every week. 

Part of being in the Midwest Shrine 

Association is the benefit of friendships 

from different parts of the country or a 

different country. We had the pleasure of 

being at a couple Shrine balls in June. Each 

Shrine Center has a different feel as well as a 

different way of doing things. We also had 

the opportunity to see a couple of different 

renditions of our beloved Ceremonial. 

While the other Temples did a fine job of 

conveying the message of Toleration, 

Charity, Beneficence and 

Friendship, I would still 

rank our Ceremonial 

Team as the best I have 

seen. Of course I may be 

biased. And as a matter of 

fact, we happen to have a 

full Ceremonial planned 

for Saturday, July 28 at 

10 AM. Bring your 

candidates to the Osman 

Weekend with the 

Ceremonial and Gala. 

We have had good 

success so far, but we can 

always bring in more 

candidates. Membership 

is an ongoing process, 

not monthly or yearly. 

Osman has, and will 

continue to, host a number of events 

designed to give prospective members a 

taste of the Shrine life. But the most 

important place for membership is with 

your club or unit. The clubs and units are 

where the fun begins. I know that more 

than a few are planning on taking their 

Blue Lodge degrees and will join us at the

remember that when you place 

upon your head the Red Fez of a 

Shriner you are symbolically tying 

about your waist the white lambskin apron 

of a Master Mason. 

The Osman Gala is coming up. Have 

you picked out a costume? Decided how 

you are going to dress? We have heard of a 

few ladies thinking about dressing up like 

Mae West and Elizabeth Taylor. Not sure 

which version of Liz, Cleopatra, Virginia 

Woolf, Butterfield 8? Some 

of the Nobles may dress up 

as this famous movie star 

and Mason who was a box 

office idol, played opposite 

Myrna Loy, Claudette 

Colbert, Norma Shearer, 

Lana Turner and Jean 

Harlow. He had several 

memorable lines including 

“Frankly my dear, I don’t 

give a damn.” Can you 

guess? The answer to the 

question from last month is 

Red Skelton. I hope you 

make plans to be in front of 

the paparazzi on July 28. 

We have our Osman 

Family Picnic coming up 

on Sunday, August 5th 

from 2 PM and end around 6 PM maybe 

later depending how long the root beer 

floats and beer hold out. We want this to 

be an old fashioned 

picnic. Osman will 

supply the drinks, 

hot dogs hamburgers 

and buns, 

watermelon and popcorn. We 

ask that you bring a dish to share. 

Salads, hot dishes, desserts, chips, 

fruit. Whatever your favorite dish is, 

we want to sample it. You might 

want to bring along a few copies of 

your recipe as well. We are holding 

the Picnic at the Osman Barn. It is 

located up our private drive about 1,000 

yards north of the main drive for Osman. 

We will have games and prizes and lots to 

do. 

To help prepare the barn, we are 

planning on a clean-up party on Saturday, 

July 14 at 9 AM. We have a 30 yard 

dumpster coming. If your club or unit has 

items in the barn, make sure you tag or 

mark those items that you want to keep so 

they don't get thrown out. If your group 

has refrigerators or other appliances that 

need to be tossed, and I know that there 

are, let the office know so we can arrange 

for a special pick-up. 

Plans are being finalized for our trip to 

Boston and Maine beginning September 27 

and returning October 1. Information on 

the trip is in this Osman with more 

complete details on the Osman website, 

www.osmanshrine.org. 

The first Temple parade of the year was a 

big success. Most importantly, no rain and 

no tornado. The last time we were in the 

South St. Paul parade it was cancelled 

minutes before it started because a tornado 

was spotted and a torrential rain ensued 

leaving my lovely bride soaked waiting at 

the end of the parade route. Next Temple 

parade is Lakeville on July 7th. Hope to see 

you at the next event.

You are invited to an oasis beginning at 6 PM. This is 

a very casual evening to enjoy some fraternal fellowship 

and fun, a little libation, a few cigars and light fare. 

Maybe a little music. 

The welcome party will be held in the Osman Barn, 

also known as the Warehouse. The Barn is located just 

north of the main building for Osman Shrine and the 

Lost Spur. From the main drive of Osman, turn right, 

and travel north about 1000 yards to a private drive on 

your right. Follow the road up the hill. Parking is in the 

field on your left before you get to the Barn.

n Treasurer’s Report: Recorder Tom 

West gave the Treasurer's report. A 

motion was made to accept the report as 

given. The motion passed. 

n Trustee’s Report: Trustee Jim Gratias 

gave the report. Motion made to accept 

report. Motion passed. 

n Oriental Guide: Bruce Thomas

n Black Camel Report: Oriental 

Guide Bruce Thomas read the names of 

the Nobles who have passed since our last 

meeting. A moment of silence followed 

the reading of their names, and the 

Chanters honored their memory with a 

song. Donald McLuckie, Dr. Lawrence 

Korda, Warren Clark, Robert Wiessner, Dale 

Olson, Wayne Oothoudt, Jack Andersen, 

Joshua Scott, Lyle Freiderich, Norman 

House. 

n Good Cheer Report: Mike Nehm 

gave the good cheer report. These Nobles 

are now or have recently been ill: Warren 

Clark, Don Danielson, Gary Winter, 

Merrill Pederson, Larry Lauber, and Frank 

Bild. 

n Hospital Report: Illustrious Sir 

Robinson reported that the Hospital is in 

great shape. He stressed that we as 

Shriners should continue to try to find 

new patients. We need to get more kids 

in the system. He thanked everyone who 

attended Hospital Day, and he thanked 

Nobles Jerry Payne, Mike Werth, Tom 

West, and Mike Nehm for doing the 

grilling the brats and burgers for the 

Camp Achieve Reunion at the Hospital. 

He also thanked the Dragon Patrol for 

bringing Chang to the Camp Achieve 

Reunion. 

n Circus Report, John Davenport: 

John stated that our profit this year was 

approximately $20,000 to $25,000 less 

than last year which would mean that the 

profit was approximately $130,000. John 

asked the Nobles to try to think of ways 

to increase the profits for the Circus. 

n Membership

Rich stated that there are only 144 Nobles 

who are still behind on their 2012 dues. 

The membership team is continuing to 

promote the Sunday Fun Days. The next 

scheduled Sunday Fun Day will be a Rib 

Fest on Sunday, June 17. Rich also 

reminded us about the Saints Game and 

Tail Gate Prospect Party on August 21. 

The Hospital Prospect Party has been 

postponed. 

n Chief of Staff Report: Chief of Staff, 

Gary Winter said the Temple Parade 

season is here. The first parade will be 

South St. Paul, Kaposia Days, June 22, 

with line-up at 5:30, step-off at 6:30, 

Oasis at the VFW. The Lakeville Parade is 

Saturday, July 7, with line-up at 4:30, 

step-off at 5:30, Oasis at the 

VFW/American Legion Club. The White 

Bear Ave. Parade is Wednesday, July 11, 

line-up at 6:00 PM, step-off at 7:00 PM, 

Oasis at the American Legion Post #39 in 

North St. Paul, on 7th Street and 

Highway 120. Nobles can park at Aldrich 

Arena for this parade, but you will need a 

parking pass. The Chief of Staff and the 

Office will have parking passes available. 

The parades for MSA in Grand Forks are 

on Thurs., August 9, and Saturday, August 

11. There will be a bus going to North 

Dakota for MSA, the cost being $40 per 

person. MSA registration is on-line at 

MSA2012.com. The deadline to register 

is June 27. Room reservation forms are in 

the Osman. Deadline for those 

reservations is July 5. The St. Paul Park 

Parade is Saturday, August 18, with lineup 

at 10:00 AM, step-off at 11:00 AM, 

Oasis at the American Legion. Please 

note that the American Legion is our 

sponsor for this parade. The Newport 

Masonic Lodge is having a Pancake 

Breakfast prior to the parade. Come and 

have breakfast before the parade. The 

River Falls Parade is September 29, and 

the Oasis will be at the Westwind prior to 

the parade. 

Other important dates are as follows: 

Club and Unit meeting will be July 10, at 

the Osman Event Center, the Car Show 

will be Saturday, July 21 in Burnsville.

Potentate’s Gala will be the weekend of 

July 27. On July 27, there will be a 

welcome party at the Barn at 6:00 PM, 

Saturday, July 28, Ceremonial at 10:00 

AM, social will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 

PM, followed by the Grand Entrance. 

Dinner will be served at 6:15 PM with 

dancing beginning at 8:00 PM. Annual 

Osman/Masonic Family Picnic will be 

held August 5 at the Barn. St. Paul 

Saints/Prospect Party will be August 21. 

Tail Gaiting will begin at 4:00 PM, meal 

at 5:30 and game at 7:05. Bring a 

member and their evening is paid for and 

so is yours. 

n Old and New Business: 

As required by Osman By-Laws, 

Recorder Tom West called for the 

Nobility to vote on the 2013 fund raiser 

which will be a Shrine Circus to be held at 

the Coliseum. Nobility voted in favor of 

the fund raiser. The Recorder also asked 

for a vote on two expenditures from the 

Pilgrimage Fund. 

As approved by the Board of Directors 

at a regular meeting on Tuesday, April 24, 

2012, due notice is hereby given that, at a 

stated meeting of “Osman Shrine on June 

12, 2012, the following will be voted 

upon. 

A. There shall be appropriated from the 

Pilgrimage Fund the sum of $8,000 or as 

much thereof as is necessary, for the Divan, 

the Nobility, and the seven elected Midwest 

Representatives to attend the Midwest in 

Grand Forks, ND, August 9-11, 2012. 

B. There shall be appropriated from the 

Pilgrimage Fund the sum of $2,500.00 or 

as much as is necessary to send the Imperial 

Representatives to attend the Imperial 

Session in Charlotte, NC, July 1-5, 2012. 

Expenditures were approved. 

Illustrious Sir Frank Spevak announced 

that the Alexandria Circus will be held on 

June 22 with shows at 2:30 and 7:00 PM. 

Illustrious Sir reported that there is a 

conflict with the Grand Lodge of 

Arkansas and Shriners International. He 

read the article which will be voted on at 

Imperial Session. Illustrious Sir also 

reported that Ralph Sem will be running 

for Imperial Treasurer against Jim 

McConnell. 

Jeff Olsen reported on the progress of 

the Car Show which is going to be held 

on July 21. Flyers are being printed and 

should be out by the end of the week. Jeff 

said the events of the day will include the 

Car Show, a band, a Hospital Screening 

Clinic, and the evening car races at Elko 

Speedway. The events are open to 

Zuhrah, Fezzan and Masonic Lodges. 

The permits have all been secured. The 

newspaper in Shakopee is going to be 

printing an article in the Shakopee paper 

about the event on that day. Jeff said the 

support from the community has been 

very good. He does need some help.

The Car Show is in Burnsville from 9:00 

AM to 1:00 PM, go to Shakopee at 1:00 

PM and meet at Elko Speedway for the 

evening races. 

Illustrious Sir Frank stated that the 

Potentate’s Gala and Ceremonial will be 

on July 28. The Ceremonial will be on 

the lower level of the Osman Event 

Center, and the Gala will be in the main 

ballroom. The theme for the Gala is “At 

the Movies.” Please wear a costume 

depicting your favorite movie character. 

Past Potentate Jim Berg is giving a 12% 

discount for costumes for the weekend. 

The invitations will be going out in 10 

days to 2 weeks. 

Illustrious Sir Frank stated the 

Osman/Masonic Family Picnic will be 

August 5, at the Barn. Osman will be 

providing hamburgers, hot dogs and 

drinks. Please bring a dish to pass. The 

entertainment in Grand Forks at MSA is a 

tribute band representing Jimmy Buffet 

and his Margaritaville Band. Illustrious 

Sir also reported that the recognition 

plaques for the Capital Campaign Fund 

are finished and will be hung on the wall 

in the lower level of the Osman Event 

Center. 

n Good of the Order: John 

Davenport stated that the Ceremonial 

Team would like to have a drummer for 

the Ceremonials and asked if anyone 

knew of someone who could do this. 

Mark Galloway stated that there will 

be a Screening Clinic in Rush City on 

July 28. 

A question was asked about the Hotel 

issue. There is no new information 

regarding this issue. Our site is still under 

consideration.

Grand Forks. The cost is going to be 

$40.00 per person round trip. Let’s sign 

up early so we know how many people 

we will have and also to see if we might 

need to have two buses. Let’s have a 

good turnout in Grand Forks. 

St. Paul Park (Heritage Days) 

Saturday, August 18th. Line-up at 9:00 

AM, step-off at 10:00 AM. Oasis will be 

at the American Legion Club Post 98. 

Post 98 is our sponsor for this Parade 

and the Post will be right in front us 

during the Parade so it would be nice to 

say “Thank you” to the Legion 

members. There will also be a pancake 

breakfast at the Newport Masonic 

Lodge in St. Paul Park starting at 8:00 

AM. Come and have breakfast before 

the Parade.

We will be Parading as soon as we get 

the date and times.

Austin Area Shrine Club & Oriental Band 

Several Divan members joined the Austin Area Shrine Club at their annual steak fry June 7. 

Our June 7th 

meeting was held at the 

Rose Pedaler in Rose 

Creek, MN. This was 

our annual steak fry, and 

we were honored to have

attendance. The Divan 

was also represented by Bruce Thomas 

(Oriental Guide), and his lady Terri, and 

Rich Purcell (1st Ceremonial Master), and 

his lady Sharon. Thank you to each of you 

for attending. 

No official business was transacted at 

this meeting. Band members were 

reminded of upcoming parades and other 

events. At this time we have participated in 

Men’s Suits/Tuxes/Blazers/Sports Coats 

parades in Morristown and Waterville. 

Upcoming parades in June, that have been 

confirmed, include Alden (June 16); 

Janesville (June 17); and Rochester (June 

22). June parades that are pending include 

Grand Meadow (June 23). 

Upcoming events include the Oasis 

following the July 4th parade in Blooming 

Prairie Parade. It will be held at the 

Blooming Prairie Gun Club located north

Albert Lea Shrine Club 

Greetings Nobles and friends. With 

about one forth of our parades completed 

everything is going very well. The little red 

cars are running great. We also have had 

good weather. A couple new drivers this 

year and a few past drivers have added to 

some great fellowship. The regular drivers 

are doing a wonderful job as well.

Like most 

of the Shrine Units attending these 

parades we have lots of time to enjoy 

fellowship. Seeing all the smiling faces of 

the kids and adults as well makes one feel 

the power of being a “Shriner” so 

rewarding.

Alexandria Shrine Club and 4 Wheelers 

We had our May 2012 meeting at the 

Shrine building in Alexandria. This was 

our annual golf outing with a steak/ 

potluck dinner which started with a 

6:00pm social hour. The meeting was 

very well attended with some of our 

widows in attendance and the weather was 

great. A great job was done by our chefs 

for the evening, the crew that cleaned and 

got the meeting set up, and for all who 

helped tear down afterwards. We will be 

having June, July, August, and September 

meetings at the building with a potluck 

dinner at each. A main meat will be 

available at each meeting with beverages. 

Next meeting is June 19th at 6:00pm. 

Minutes and treasurers reports were 

approved. Noble George Kosin is still not 

feeling well. 

The circus team gave out tickets to 

Nobles that showed up for the meeting 

thus saving some money on stamps. Our 

circus chairs Ralph Berg and Bill Weaver 

have been doing a great job this year and 

deserve a big thank you. The circus is 

June 22nd with two performances that 

day. A total of 3000 tickets were given to 

area schools to hand out to the younger 

children. 

It was noted that Noble Brent Olson 

has decided to stay in Alaska. His wife 

will be moving there and their daughter is 

to be married this fall. Congrats to the 

Olson family. 

Noble Doug Sherman has started us 

off with a few parades lined up already. 

The first one, June 3rd, next is June 7th, 

then the 14th, 16th and 17th and the list 

goes on. Thanks to Doug for all his hard 

work on keeping us with another busy 

year. 

We had discussion on what to wear to 

our Shrine activities. It was ordered by 

the president that a $5.00 fez fine will be 

issued to any noble not wearing a fez to a 

meeting. It is proper to wear an Alex 

Shrine shirt to our meeting, if you do not 

have one, please dress as a Shriner would. 

Our fez and white parade shirt is to be 

worn at the circus. If you do not have a 

parade shirt, please wear a white shirt. 

(Exceptions are if making cotton candy or 

parking cars, Shrine shirt is ok along with 

the Alex Shrine cap)

Happy 4th of July! Don’t blow your 

head, hands, or anything else off on this 

grand and glorious holiday. 

The Chanters are alive and almost well 

at the present time. We are planning on 

being in the South Saint Paul parade, 

White Bear Avenue parade, and also Pan- 

O-Play in Lakeville. It’s a busy schedule 

for everyone in June and July. Don’t 

forget the M.S.A. in Grand Forks August 

9, 10, and 11. Get your reservations in to 

make the trip. And we need to see a lot of 

fezzes at the car show July 21.

We are in the process of ordering some 

new XL flag carriers as ours were ruined in 

rain last year at Kaposia Days! Sitting in the 

pouring rain in and on the Jeep! Never 

been so wet. Thanks to Osman for their 

help! Also, light jackets, polo’s and hats 

have been quoted for member purchase and 

sounds like a lot of fun. Hope to see you 

there. 

The Chicago trip really sounded great 

– especially having your own car on the 

train equipped with chef and bartender. 

Quite a party. 

Congratulations to Gene Dunn, our 

float driver. He’s now an honorary 

Chanter in recognition of his dedication 

to the Chanters at all events.

great time! Our Aug meeting will be moved 

to Tuesday Aug 21st to attend the Osman St 

Paul Saints game. Meeting will be informal 

with fun at the game the primary goal!

The Legion of Honor continues to look 

for good men to carry the colors for 

Osman. This year the LOH hopes to do 10 

parades,(including 2 MSA parades), 7 

Osman and 3 LOH parades. You don’t have 

to be a veteran to participate. We can teach 

anyone the basics of what we do. You don’t 

have to be a veteran to help honor your 

country and Osman Shrine.

Wow what a spring.

Mites recently held their 

first practice. Everyone 

looked to be in midseason 

form already so you 

know they have been 

Tim Gangnon practicing.. We even had 

a prospective member 

attend so we wowed him with our high 

performance maneuvers and our attention to 

detail. Our prospective member was quoted 

as saying he had never seen such a 

professional display of parade patterns. 

We also had a significant change within 

the group as a result of this practice session, 

one that left Art Lemke applauding with joy. 

Art was the current holder of the Mighty 

Mites internal award known as the DITDA. 

Nomads Club 

The Nomads are now in 

their second year of 

operation. We’re the newly 

re-instated club designed to 

bring new Osman Shriners 

and their Ladies into a 

social club situation and 

give them opportunities to

participate in the fund 

raising activities of Osman 

Shrine. We further plan to present 

programs that will let our members know 

about the events and activities of other 

clubs and units. 

At the June meeting we discussed the 

Shriners Cruisin’ Car Show, scheduled for 

Saturday, July 21. The show will be in 

Burnsville and the tour will take the 

vehicles to Shakopee and then on to the 

Elko Speedway. We also talked about use of 

our concession trailer at the Fezzan Shrine 

carnival on July 28. 

The July meeting of the Nomads will be 

on Thursday, July 12 at the Osman Shrine 

Center. We’ll start with a social hour at 

6:00 PM, ordering food from the menu. 

We’ll follow at 7:00 PM with the meeting 

and will be done by 8:00 PM. All Osman 

Nobles (new or old) and their Ladies are 

welcome, so make plans to attend! 

All new Osman Shriners are 

automatically considered to be members of 

the Nomads. First-year dues are free to 

these new members and are minimal to 

other members of Osman Shrine. New 

Nobles attending the meetings receive our 

Nomads membership card. 

“Nomads” shirts are available and can be 

ordered through Doreen at the Osman 

Shrine office.

Individuals holding this award must do so 

until they are relieved when another member 

comes off a car during an official function. 

Congratulations to our own Burt Rovner for 

his demonstration of the proper way to exit a 

vehicle to the rear while under way. Burt will 

always be remembered for his immediate 

questioning of the official nature of the 

practice and the happy display presented 

when a ruling was made identifying his 

receipt of the DITDA. You go, sir.

The 35th Annual Glenn Paulin Masters and Wardens Golf Day will be 

held at the Willow Creek Golf Course in Rochester on July 23rd, 2012.

4 person teams. Open to all, Masons, prospective Masons, family

Behind the Kart-riding, clowning and horn-tooting, 

these units are spreading the message of Shriners’ 

philanthropy: “We parade so they can walk.” There 

are hundreds of parades throughout Minnesota and 

surrounding states each summer, and through the 

efforts of dozens of Shrine units, many will have at 

least one Shrine unit participating. Check over the 

list, and if you have a spare afternoon or evening,

and palate, today introduced its new, 

integrated marketing campaign, Love to 

the rescue. The initiative is designed to 

raise awareness of Shriners Hospitals for 

Children and support their mission of 

caring for children by driving donations. 

Love to the rescue highlights Shriners 

Hospitals for Children’s outstanding 

medical care and its unique ingredient – 

love. Every day at Shriners Hospitals for

Stephanie Norte, Amanda 

Troester and Brooke Salfer 

worked on a project for FCCLA 

(Family, Careers, Communities, 

and Leaders of America) at their 

school. Their project was to 

increase the awareness of Shriners 

Childrens Hospital, Twin Cities in 

their community, and to raise 

funds to donate to the 

Womens Auxiliary to be used 

for the wheelchair fund. 

These young ladies, along with 

their instructor and advisor, 

Angela Bartlewski, have done 

amazing work. In December, 

they declared a pajama day at 

their school. Anyone, 

including the teachers, who 

wanted to wear pajamas to 

school the day before 

Christmas vacation, had to pay 

$1.00. They took this money, 

bought crafts for the children 

at our Hospital, and spent one 

day working with the children 

making craft projects. They 

also worked at the Shrine 

Circus selling cotton candy. 

The money they made at the 

Circus will be part of their 

donation to the Womens 

Auxiliary. They are currently 

in the process of setting up 

pop tab collection boxes to be 

put in business 

establishments, schools, 

cafeterias, etc. to raise money 

for the Womens Auxiliary 

wheelchair fund. These young ladies are 

very creative and industrious. We greatly 

appreciate the fact that they want to 

contribute to our wonderful project of 

raising money to provide wheelchairs for 

our children at Shriners Hospital for 

Children, Twin Cities. We want to say 

thank you to these girls and their instructor 

for choosing this project and contributing 

to our cause. At this point, they have 

raised over $500 to donate to Womens 

Auxiliary. We also want to wish them luck 

as they enter National competition with 

their project. They have already won both

June was full of activities. Riding our new 

Harley up to Grand Forks was an adventure! 

Sometime ask me how I get to stow a ball gown 

and cycle boots in the same carry bag. First 

Lady Drina of Kem Shrine, hosted a lovely 

luncheon with Imperial Lady Cheryl sharing 

the message from First Imperial Lady Patty 

Severe "Stepping Forward Toward a Brighter 

Future," which addresses the critically 

important issue of increasing awareness and 

funding to pediatric burn care education and 

training. 

We also learned that a group of Khartum 

Shriner’s and their Ladies were coming down to 

the cities for shopping the next weekend. They 

arrived on Thursday and had a special tour of 

the TC Hospital on Friday. That night we put 

together an evening of fun at the Twin Cities 

Magic shop for the group, show included. 

Saturday we brought our counterparts over to 

New Richmond, WI, where we enjoyed Zor's 

ceremonial and ball. It was a busy two weeks, 

but filled with laughter and friendship. 

First Lady Julie of Zor Shrine, put together 

a wonderful luncheon with speakers from 

Daughters of the Nile, The Ladies Auxiliary 

and an Occupational Therapist from our TC 

Hospital. She spoke about activities the 

children do, some of the challenges they 

overcome and the adaptive equipment they use 

in their everyday tasks. These activities can be 

monumental. Sometimes we take for granted 

that we will always be able to pick up, reach 

something, or button a button. 

This month also marks the beginning of a 

new set of awareness and advertising campaigns 

from Imperial for Shriner’s Hospitals. You may 

have seen the commercials already on TV. If 

not, and you have access to a computer, you

meant to be shared with us and by all of us to 

others. 

One of the dilemmas many people 

encounter is language. How do you approach a 

family you think may need services? In your 

heart you know your goal is to help, but when 

approaching parents, grandparents and 

caretakers please be very mindful of the 

enormous challenges they may be facing, 

financially and 

emotionally. 

At the Kem 

Ladies Luncheon, 

the parent who 

spoke to us was 

not aware of the 

services Shriner’s 

provides. She was at a time in her family’s life 

where they were running out of options. They 

had been receiving services at a local hospital 

and were not aware of the services we offer. A 

Shriner approached her at a picnic. He 

explained what he did before he offered the 

services of our hospitals. 

When you approach a parent, do NOT 

label the child and say, "I noticed George is 

crippled. We can help!" Children / adults are 

not labels. Parents are well informed of their 

child's challenge. They live with it every day. 

You may see the child being "fixed" and 

become excited to know that this child will 

have an opportunity to grow and contribute to 

our society. They may see more "to do" than 

they can handle at that moment. Remind 

yourself that the challenge/disease that this 

person has, does not define the person. 

First: Educate. Explain Shriner's. Why 

you/your spouse or friend wears that funny 

"hat." Why are they in a parade entertaining 

the crowd? Explain the services we offer. Talk 

about the hospitals and outreach clinics. How 

we can help transport and the aid we offer. 

Why you dedicate your time, talents and 

means to our great philanthropy. 

Second: Offer Help. After you have 

established a greeting, and the Mom, Dad, 

Grandparent, Aunt or Friend knows who you 

are and why you are, say "Are you receiving all 

the help you need?" Give them information 

and answer their questions. It takes time to 

absorb, to realize someone is out there who can 

help. Be patient. Good things will happen. 

Speaking of good things - Are you ready for

Greetings. This 

month I would like to 

introduce our beautiful 

Princess Royal, Sara 

Malewitz and give you 

a bit of her 

background. 

Greetings! I am Sara 

(Bertucci) Malewitz and 

I am proud to be 

Princess Royal at Mat- 

Sha Temple No. 62. I grew up on the 

Mesabi Iron Range, where the ground 

bleeds iron ore and hockey reigns 

supreme. I was introduced to the 

masonic family as a child, helping out 

with pasty bakes and anxiously awaiting 

the day I could join Job's Daughters. My 

masonic heritage comes from my greatuncle 

and aunt who showed me the 

ropes and made sure that on my 

eighteenth birthday, I signed a petition 

for O.E.S. After completing my bachelors 

degrees (in Communication studies and 

in Theatre) at Concordia University in St. 

Paul, I moved to 

Michigan to pursue a 

Masters of Art in 

Theatre. While 

attending Eastern 

Michigan University, I 

became involved at 

Holy Trinity Catholic 

Student Parish and 

eventually became 

their Youth Minister. 

During this time, I also 

met my husband Don. 

Within a year of our 

wedding, Don 

received a job offer

here in the cities and we were moving 

“home”. We now live just outside of St. 

Paul where I serve as “personal assistant” 

to my 3 year old son 

and six month old 

daughter. We joke, that 

I travel with an 

entourage, as my family 

often travels with me to 

Nile events. I enjoy the 

time I spend with my 

Nile friends and feel

blessed to be able to Princess Royal 

come together with all 

different people to work to promote 

Growth, Education, Motivation and 

Service within our order, and especially, 

for the children. 

I am looking forward to an eventful 

year. We have lots of FUNdraisers 

planned. Many are temple traditions, and 

others are new things we thought we 

might try. We had a great time June 23 

for our Patriots & Pearls Fashion show 

and marketplace. On July 21 we are 

going to have a Teddybear 

Picnic themed event in 

lieu of our garden party. 

This event will be a casual 

event fun for “children” of 

all ages. This would be a 

great event to invite your 

family, friends and 

neighbors to attend. 

Later in the term look 

for: a spaghetti dinner, a 

paper crafting day, a trip 

to the theatre, Cupid Calls 

and an Oscar party, to 

name a few of the fun 

things we have planned.
