Pote’s Notes
We sure are lucky to be Shriners
March is coming in like a lion and let’s
hope it goes out like a lamb. It has been
busy in Osman Country and I’m glad to
have been able to share time with all the
Nobles and Ladies I have had the
opportunity to be with.
The month started with the Club and
Unit Head seminar. Once again it was a
great success thanks to all the hard work
from Rich Purcell and all the rest of the
Divan.
One of the highlights from that day was
the making of a new Noble. Our
Ceremonial team, I think the best in all of
Shrinedom, put on a mini ceremonial to
bring Brother Dr. Cary Mielke into Osman.
Dr. Mielke is the interim Chief of Staff for
the Twin Cities Shrine Hospital for
Children. He is a wonderful doctor and has
been a great addition for the Hospital here.
We all hope he gets the permanent
appointment.
Dr. Mielke has taken over from our own
Dr. Guidera. Dr. Guidera got the job in
Tampa as the Chief Medical Officer for the
entire Hospital system. We will miss him
but he has promised he will still come up
and see us every now and again. I just don’t
think he will come up too often in the
winter.
Then it was up to Duluth for the MSA
winter session. This is when we go and find
out where we will stay during the summer
MSA and where the parades will be. We
found out we will be staying in the same
hotel we had in 2001. Our housing
committee checked out the rooms and said
they are very nice. We will be down in the
canal park area and I was told the hotel
provides, what looks like, a very nice
breakfast. I’m hoping we can
have a good showing in
August. The winter business
meeting is also the time when
Imperial sends up Divan to let
us know how things are going in
Tampa. We were very lucky to have
four Imperial Divan members attend
including the Imperial Potentate, Al
Madson. We got a lot of information about
the possible expansion of the Shrine into
South America. We heard about how first
and third party pay is bringing in over one
hundred million dollars annually to the
Hospital system. And we also had a small
demonstration from El Riad Temple on how
to conduct a rush party. The entire Friday
afternoon session was dedicated to
membership. The session was chaired by
The Imperial Chief Rabban, Dale Stauss.
After watching the small demonstration
in Duluth I thought we could really benefit
from seeing the entire rush party. I
contacted my counterpart from El Riad and
he put me in touch with their membership
chairman. After receiving a warm invitation
we went down to witness firsthand what all
is needed to put a rush party together. The
we was me, Roger Berge, Mark Galloway,
and our new membership Chairman Warren
Lynch. It was a long afternoon down to
Sioux Falls and back but we all left with a
lot of great information and a renewed
enthusiasm for getting new members into
Osman. Warren will be putting together a
membership team and planning events for
everyone to help
make Osman an even
better Temple.
During February
many Clubs and Units plan
their meeting as a Valentine
party. I was able to attend the
Alexandria party and the Provost
party. It is so much fun to attend
parties where the Ladies come and
share time with us. A highlight from
the Alexandria party was when Noble Lee
Johnson was chosen by a local bank to
choose a charity for the bank to donate one
thousand dollars. Lee said it was an easy
decision. He asked the bank to give the
money to the Osman’s Ladies Auxiliary.
Lady Rose West was there to accept the
donation and thank both Lee and the local
bank for the donation. Both events were
great and I am only sorry I couldn’t make it
to Albert Lea. A prior family commitment
kept me home that evening.
Because it’s March that means that the
Circus is only a month away. Let’s all get out
and sell tickets and ads for the coloring
book. Our Chief Rabban, Roger Berge and
the Circus Manager John Davenport have
been working very hard at putting together
a great show. I don’t remember who said it
but I think the best description I have ever
heard for the circus is “It’s the hardest fun
you’ll ever have”.
But before the circus we have a stated
meeting on the 12th of March. Come to the
Osman event center and share a fun and
informative evening with your brother
Nobles. Share a meal and maybe some
refreshments. The meal usually starts around
5:00 P.M. and the meeting begins at 6:30. I
really hope to see you there.
We sure are lucky to be Shriners.
Whether you come for the whole
week, a day, or for a couple
performances, we need everyone to be
VOLUNTEER
Have you got your spot for working at the circus picked out? If you’re set to
work with your Club or Unit, great. We have lots of additional jobs
available - if you need a sit-down job, we’ve got ‘em! If you want to work
with handicapped guests, we need your help! If you can only work for one
or two shows, no problem, we have a spot for you! If you can help set up or
tear down, terrific! We need you!
We can’t emphasize enough how addicting and fun working at the circus
can be. The expressions on faces of the children when they see those
elephants for the first time are priceless.
You’ll also get to know your fellow Shriners and their spouses and friends
in a busy but casual setting.
Club & Unit Heads Seminar - February 2, 2013
Nobles representing the 35 Clubs and units of Osman gathered for their annual information and idea sharing session.
Marshal Larry Norte and C&U President
David Tabor.
n Meeting called to order:
Rich Purcell called the meeting to
order at 9:03 AM and followed with the
Pledge to the Flag led by C&U President
Dave Tabor and an opening prayer lead by
Chaplain Dan Skoog.
n Officer Installation: Mighty Mites
and Cycle Patrol officers previously not
installed were called forward for
From the Legion of Honor: Jim Smeby and
Rique Beslin
Dr. Cary Mielke reviewed some of the techniques
developed and used at Shriners.
installation by Rich Purcell.
n Hospital Report: Dr. Cary Mielke,
M.D., Interim Chief of Staff of the
Shriners Hospital for Children-Twin
Cities was introduced and provided an
update for the hospital. He reviewed the
Hospital mission statement, vision
statement and core values.
He also provided some statistics for the
TC hospital, which included: 7,609
outpatient clinic encounters, 702 surgical
operations, 783 new patients treated. He
discussed some of the treatments that are
being provided at the hospital and showed
pictures and x-rays related to the
orthopaedic conditions encountered and
treated.
The TC hospital is considered the leading
orthotics and prosthetics provider in the
Shrine Hospital system. About 80-85%
of the patients here are insured and
insurance is now providing about 30% of
the hospital budget.
Volume in the system is down and there
are discussions about changing the model
used for the hospitals. More services are
moving toward outpatient
services.
Donations are still key for the
hospital and Dr. Mielke
recognized several of the entities
and individuals that have
provided funds, goods and
services to the hospital.
Dr. Mielke specifically noted how
great the teamwork is at the
hospital and believes that is the
area where this hospital excels at
the most.
Hospital Day will be a two day event on
May 17th and 18th.
Dr. Mielke then introduced a patient and
her parents who related their problems
and how the treatments from the Shrine
Hospital have changed their lives.
n Patient Application Procedure:
PP Roger Robinson discussed how to
propose patients for the hospital. There
One of our patients told her very moving
story of being helped by Shriners.
Circus Director/Ceremonial Potentate
John Davenport, Ill. Sir Don Harmsen and
Recorder Tom West.
are pamphlets available in multiple
languages and business
cards. The process has
changed: the application
is no longer used, instead
they may call a phone
number (1-888-293-
2832 or 612-596-6100)
and a child can possibly
get into the hospital
within days instead of
months.
n Osman Womens
Auxiliary: Rose West
made a presentation
about the Womens
Auxiliary. Our hospital is the only one
that has an Auxiliary. The Auxiliary has
no paid staff, so all donations can go in
support of the Hospital.
Charles Van House from
Austin Shrine Club.
Divan Members watch Rich Purcell swearing in Mighty
Mites Pit Boss Michael Doyle and Rochester Cycle Patrol’s
Reggie Shones.
Their primary area of supply is for
equipment, especially wheel chairs. In
addition they provide recreational
activities for the patients. They
also support the parents’
accommodation center with its 14
rooms. They have donated over
$5 million dollars over the past 15
years.
They are also the organization that
operates the pop can top donation
process. Besides cash donations,
the Auxiliary also accepts toy
donations. Each patient is given a
toy and toys are also given in
Christmas stockings each year.
Other donations that they have
received include quilts, knitted
hats and other handmade pieces of
clothing.
The Auxiliary is open to everyone, man or
women, and does not
require any other Masonic
connection, only an interest
in helping the children.
n Daughters of the Nile:
Past Queen of Mat-Sha
Temple 62, Jane Larson
made a presentation about
the Daughters of the Nile.
They support the Hospital
through fund raising and
have averaged $1.5 million
dollars a year. Besides fund
raising, they too take
donations of goods and
services and do a lot of
sewing for the hospital. This year they
will be celebrating their 100th
Anniversary.
Mike Hill, East Central Shrine Club
PP Hank Paulson, new Shriner Dr. Cary Mielke and PP Frank Spevak.
Directors Staff.
n Memberhip Update: Mike Nehm
presented a membership update. Osman
ended 2012 with 1,182 members. To
maintain our current representation level
at the Imperial, we need to stay over
1,000 members. We lose about 4%
annually due
to the Black
Camel. The
temples in
Grand Forks
(Kem) and
Sioux Falls (El
Raid) have
been successful
in growing
their
membership.
We all need to
mentor our
new members.
This will help
our new nobles
feel like they
Doug Brick of the Dragon
Patrol.
are getting a good value for their
membership and will become life-long
members. We rank high in creations, but
we are also high in demits. Most of our
members are 65 and over.
We need to draw more membership
especially from younger demographics.
Discussion included looking into veterans’
groups and going to Blue Lodges.
n Ceremonials: John Davenport made
a presentation on Ceremonials. Recently
we have been doing more “miniceremonials”
in outstate areas to bring in
smaller numbers. To get a miniceremonial
in your area you need to
contact the Potentate, get dispensation
and have the candidates’ paperwork
completed.
There is a major
ceremonial
planned in
November at a
location to be
determined.
A miniceremonial
was
then conducted
to bring in Dr.
Mielke as a
noble, with John
Davenport
presiding and
PP’s Henry
Paulson and
Frank Spevak
assisting.
n Chief of Staff: Mark Sandstrom,
our new Chief of Staff, gave a
presentation on our parades this year
and on the Midwest and Imperial
Sessions.
n Circus
Report: John
Davenport
made a
presentation
on the
upcoming
circus, April
4th through
the 7th.
Roger Berge is
this year’s
circus director
and Jeff Olsen
as the circus
comptroller.
Nobles can sell plaques, pennants, tickets
and advertising in the coloring books.
Mankato Nobles Dave Peterson, Michael Meyer and Steve Igou.
C&U Secretary Brent
Your Club or Unit can receive
commissions for selling these items. Our
circus is so successful because we do more
of the work ourselves.
March 12th, 4:30 is the big, pre-circus
meeting. All Clubs and Units should
have at least one representative present.
n Etiquette: Bruce Thomas made a
presentation on etiquette. The Fez
Owners’ Manual covers many of the
etiquette questions that a Noble may
have.
n Newspaper Report: Nancy Fish,
Mike Nehm and Anders Haugen made a
presentation for the award winning
Osman newspaper. Due dates for the
newspaper are the 15th of each month.
Email reminders will go out in advance to
those who are expected to have monthly
articles. Ducks were chucked.
n Insurance Report: Jeff Olsen and our
insurance agent, Brett Boelter, made a
presentation on our insurance coverage.
formatted emails to all of our
members that have registered
email addresses. Currently we
have 581 subscribers, which is
about half of our membership.
We can have up to 2,000
additional cost, so we have
plenty of ability to make more
our new website. The site has a
Club and Unit link. Each Club
or Unit can provide information
to be included and a link to a
website, if the Club or Unit has
one. The calendar uses Google and can be syncronized with anyone
with a gmail account. The Imperial website, www.beashrinernow.com,
has a mobile version that has a “locate temple” function. There is also
an Apple app that can be downloaded.
State of the Temple address from our new Potentate, Ill. Don Harmsen.
He announced that Warren Lynch will be our new membership
He says that Osman is doing great and we need to continue to do great
things.
Club & Unit
The Chief’s Corner
The 2013 MSA Winter Session went
very well and we got a lot of information
in for the summer session. This is going to
be a great MSA summer session and I
hope to see as many club and units as
possible in Duluth. I will be emailing the
heads of the clubs and units the
information and it will also be in the
Chanters
March is the month of change. We
don’t know if it is winter or spring. It’s
Minnesota. The month of love has come
and gone. I hope you were a success with
flowers, candy, etc.
The Chanters received some sad news
this month. Our accompanist, Barbara
Korum, has decided to retire from our
Many thanks, Barb! L. to r, Barb Anderson,
Barb Korum, Diane Hobot and Marcella
Strand (who brought homemade fudge!)
Also attending were Kay Skoog and Nancy
FIsh.
group as accompanist. She will be greatly
missed as accompanist, but will continue to
be a valued friend. She was our dedicated
and willing accompanist for about thirteen
years. The Chanter wives had a luncheon
in her honor on February 5th at Joseph’s
and from all reports had a grand time. We
are now looking for a new accompanist,
male or female. Maybe one of our new
Shriners or his wife or daughter would be
available. This would be a fun and
economical way to participate in Shrine
Osman and The Chief’s Corner article.
I appointed Erik Seavey be one of my
Assistant Chiefs of Staff along with Jim
Awada, Ray Hobot and Al Christofk. Erik
accepted that position and he will be a
great asset to our group, Thanks Erik.
Remember the Pre- Circus meeting,
being held prior to the Stated meeting
March 12. We would like to see a
activities. Or someone may have a friend
capable of doing what we need. We are
looking for a volunteer to be our
accompanist. Anyone interested should
contact Dean Strand. The future of our
long-standing unit depends on this.
The carnival parade was a big success,
with lots of participation from our units.
The drum corps even made the front page
of the paper in living color. Hurrah!!! The
Club and Unit seminar was good and
informational. Lots of work goes into
planning these events. “Someone” even
gave out rubber duckies wearing a fez.
A final note: WANTED; Accompanist.
Must be able to tolerate old jokes, sour
notes, and bitter coffee. Call Dean for
further info.
May your home always be too small
to hold all your friends.
Alexandria Shrine Club and 4 Wheelers
The Alexandria Shrine Club, Calliope
and 4 Wheelers met at the Holiday Inn on
February 17th for their
annual Valentines
Lunch
meeting.
There was a
great
attendance
of over 40
people which
involved a group that
came up from the cities with the big
van, filled. Glad to see the rear light got
fixed on the van since last time it was up
here. We really do appreciate all you do for
us and for making the trip to the meeting.
Noble Merrill Pederson is going through
some health issues, Noble Jim Bridenstine is
going in for eye surgery due to glaucoma,
and Pat Denke is having surgery on her
knee. Please keep these people in your
thoughts and prayers.
Noble Delmore Gustafson (Gusie) rode
the Black Camel on 1-16-2013; a moment
Lee and Shirley Fielder
Bill Lindholm
of silence was given in respect of our fallen
brother.
Ticket prices for our circus were
discussed at the meeting and after much
discussion; a motion was made and
approved to change the ticket
prices for our circus to
$10.00 for all seats,
adult or child.
For the
past five years,
Bell State Bank and
Trust has used a program called ‘Pay it
Forward’ which gives each branch $1000.00
to donate to a charity of their choice.
Tammy Norum of the Alexandria branch
was the selected employee who got to decide
where their money went to this year. Lucky
for us, she remembers Lee Johnson coming
into the bank and talking about the Osman
Shrine and the Women’s Auxiliary and what
they do for children. Tammy decided to
donate the $1000.00 to Lee in turn to give
to Chair of the Osman Women’s Auxiliary
Rose West for the Wheelchair fund. This
was done at this meeting with a standing
ovation given to Tammy, Bell State Bank
and Trust, Lee, and Rose West.
This year the Alex Shrine Club is asking
all members to bring a toy or gift card
(Target, Walmart, etc.) to each meeting to
donate to the Women’s Auxiliary for the
children. Gift cards work great for the older
children and the donations will be taken to
the hospital/Auxiliary on a monthly basis.
It rained, it poured and the decision was
tough, but Noble Wayne Becker was
presented a trophy
for the 2012
Shriner’s Cruizin’
Car Show by
Noble Tom West.
Categories Wayne
was noted in: best
car of the 50’s, best
2 door, longest
drive, only car to
show. Congrats to
Wayne and look
out this year, I
heard the
Carl and
Delores
Sudbrink.
Lady Patricia and Rudy Denke.
competition is getting harder.
All ladies present were handed out a
yellow rose and thanked for all they do and
put up with.
PP Hank Paulson enlightened us with a
few words and then Illustrious Sir Don
Harmsen spoke of the upcoming Alex and
Osman circuses and appreciates help at the
Osman circus. Keep up being a “lucky”
Shriner and the importance of membership
in Osman. Announced that Warren Lynch
is the membership chair and thanked all.
Secretary, Brion Golde
Jim Bridenstine is just “THAT MUCH” taller
than Potentate Donald Harmsen.
The Alexandria 4 Wheelers were one of the most action packed
units in the St. Paul Winter Carnival Parade Jan. 26
Rochester Merry Medics
When Patrick Johnson was going
through some Merry Medics’ boxes from
Hal Kimble’s estate, he found this
tongue-in-cheek history of the group.
We are assuming that Hal wrote it.
With apologies to historians, we are
reprinting it here. Part one appeared in
the Feburay issue.
When created our charter
membership consisted of 23
former Osman Clowns. We
take almost anyone. We are
ecumenical; several
Protestants, one Catholic, and
one non-practicing Jew. We
have no Greeks or Hindus,
but we do have a few
Norwegians, which is just
about as bad. We have a
farmer; a veterinarian; a
chiropractor; an associate
member who is a staff man at
the Mayo Clinic; a banker; a
fireman; an insurance man; a
postal worker at the Clinic; a
lumberman; a painter; a soft
drink distributor; a TV
engineer; a body specialist . . .
auto body, that is; a supervisor
of a municipal power plant; a
hardware man; a dairy
employee; a jeweler; a
manufacturing engineer; a
postmaster; an engineer at the
Franklin Heating plant; a
former Air Force man; a loan
specialist (need money? see
Adams or Schwoch), and an
Inn Keeper. Among our
associates is a pharmacistalderman;
a mortician; a man
in the County Corrections
Dept.; and a service station
operator. Then we have a
bunch of guys that are
employed, notice I said
employed, I didn’t say WORK
at the assembly plant in
Northwest Rochester.
We have guys that are
retired, and some that are just
plain tired. Guys that are lazy
and some that are crazy. Our
youngest member is 24 years
young, and our oldest Active Member is
Jim McMartin, who drives from
Claremont to attend Shrine Club
meetings and Merry Medic meetings,
walks in lots of parades and is very active
in Blue Lodge and Scottish Rite. This guy
is 82 years young. No, he wasn’t involved
in that youth riot in Claremont last
summer.
The Merry Medics are a good bunch of guys,
Full of B.S. from the tips of their toes to the brows of their eyes.
Some of them are skinny and some of them are fat,
Some are getting bald and have to wear a hat.
There is one, who is over 70 years old,
Tell him he can’t take it, and you really get told.
We’ve put in lots and lots of time this year,
And always well, almost always, wait till after the parade to
have a beer.
Travel? Yes, we have traveled near and traveled far,
Some went by ‘sickey wagon’ and some went by car.
We’ve been to Rollingstone, Brownsdale, Kellogg, Fountain,
Blooming Prairie, Dexter, Winter Carnival and Zumbro
Falls,
Winona, Red Wing, Wykoff, Austin, Lake City, Chatfield, and
even to Spring Valley at the request of Big Old Paul’s.
Our new Medics this year have really come on strong,
Right out front with the rest, just where they belong.
Some who have been Medics for the past few years,
Have really been out-done by our new ones who have no
fears.
Our wives are terrific too, just as they have always been,
With enthusiasm, encouragement, help and praise through
thick and thin.
What more pay could we ask than to make a smile out of a
frown,
Than to bend over low to hear a two-year-old whisper, “Thank
you Mister Clown”.
What more could we ask for than to bend over to shake a
hand or tweak a nose, for after all,
It’s not for the applause and smiles we get; it’s because at no
other time do we walk so tall.
(Original signed by Milt Coppe)
Outsiders ask, “Hey, what do you have
to do to be a Merry Medic?” I like to say
that to qualify, first of all you must like
people and kids. Also you must have
failed sandbox and blocks in kindergarten;
and in elementary you failed recess and
vacation. Don’t fret about your image and
inhibitions. The application of make-up
plus a costume removes all fears and
doubts. Even your best
neighbor or fellow worker
won’t know you.
We encourage ACTIVE
participation. We find that
there is nothing more
rewarding for our efforts
than the smile of a scared
kid in a hospital bed, or the
‘thank you’ of a lonely
resident of a nursing home.
We encourage the presence
of our wives (and/or
girlfriends) at parades and
in our post-parade activities.
By having them as active
participants and spectators,
we find that they encourage
our activities and they enjoy
the fun that goes with being
a Merry Medic wife.
We have appeared
throughout southern
Minnesota, in Wisconsin,
and last summer at a
ceremonial in Iowa by
request of their Pote. We
have been at school interest
days, school carnivals,
homecoming parades, retail
promotions, hospitals,
nursing homes, county fairs,
company parties and
picnics, and even a couple
weddings. We are also
available for confirmations
and Bar Mitzvahs.
That’s the story of the
growth of this unit. It’s
great to be a Shriner, but
even greater to be a Shrine
Merry Medic. Thanks to
Potentate Al Olson, a longtime
dream became a reality.
Pete Staloch, John Stolte and Al Reider (just some of whom were met at previous shows)
returning to this year's show as members of our unit to continue our recruiting efforts.
This year's show promises to bring in several new members. Parade scheduling has
begun and we anticipate a successful season with plenty of participation. Preparations
are now underway for our participation in the Donnie Smith Motorcycle Show in St. Paul
Mighty Mites
Greetings from the Mighty Mites
While our cars are stored for the winter,
the Mighty Mites continue to meet as
members of this great organization. As the
2012 season came to a close, we enjoyed
each other’s company at our annual holiday
party held at Dave’s Chop Shop in
Woodbury last month. It was a great party
with great friends, allowing us to spend some
non-driving time together. A true highlight
of the evening was the great poster shots of
our many travels given to the members by
our special guests, Nancy Fish and Jerry
Payne. Also joining us were our Illustrious
Potentate Donald Harmsen and his Lady
Terrie along with our High Priest and
Prophet Bruce Thomas with his Lady Terri.
The Mighty Mites leadership team for
the 2013 season were introduced and
inducted to serve our unit. Our leadership
team will be the following:
Crew Chief John Watson; Pit Boss Mike
Doyle; Secretary/Treasurer Ron Larson
We as members, thank our leadership
team in advance for their willingness to serve
as we travel our many
highways with the goal of
serving Osman and the
Shrine. We also want to
thank Tim Gangnon for his
service to the Mighty Mites
as our Crew Chief for 2012.
His dedication to the Shrine
and our unit is well
documented by his
commitment.
Despite placing our cars
in storage for the winter, we
just enjoyed our first St.
Paul Winter Carnival
parade along with other
units of Osman. Thanks go out to our
members who had the vision to see our unit
as a part of the Winter Carnival parade. The
vision is one thing, following through with a
great plan and completing the task is even
more important. From all accounts, the
Mighty Mites received great reviews from the
most important critic, those on the curb,
who attended the parade with their families.
Austin Area Shrine Club & Oriental Band
Nobles and ladies
enjoyed a dinner at King
Buffet on February 7th
prior to the regular
monthly meeting.
President Brad Stout
presided at the meeting.
Noble Brad McBeain gave
Neil Hanson
the invocation, and Nobles
Bill Newell and Norm
Hecimovich presented the minutes of the
previous meeting and financial reports
respectfully.
There were no communications. It was
reported that Noble Max Pecht II was doing
quite well, and that Judy McDonald should be
home soon following heart surgery in
Rochester.
Noble Otto Volkert gave a report on the
sale of Circus Banners and Plaques, with
several sales already completed. If Nobles
needed additional materials they were to
contact him as he had two banners remaining
to be sold. It was decided to have the Oriental
Band purchase a Circus Banner for the
Masonic Lodge.
President Stout reported briefly on the
Seminar that was held on Sat. Feb. 2nd, and
indicated that the Club and Unit received
several compliments for the work that is being
done in our area. This is a credit to the
members who are willing to help out and assist
when called upon.
Following discussion about the date for our
monthly meetings, motion was made and
seconded to move our meetings back to the
first Thursday of the
month. This will
coincide with the Lodge
meeting that is held on
the first Tuesday of the
month, and hopefully
avoid some confusion.
(If members recall, we
used to meet on the first
Thursday, but made a
change due to the
availability of the room
we used at the Holiday
Inn. Since that facility
is no longer available it
was felt that we could
return to the date that
seemed to work best
Deciding it was too chilly to zoom the MM cars at the
Winter Carnival parade, Mighty Mites rigged this parade
unit to showcase their cars!
Thanks to Gary Hoven, Burt Rovner,
Tim Gangnon and all the Mighty Mites in
their winter jackets as we presented our unit
in a grand way. The “Truck-Flat-Bed-Float”,
trailer and members displayed the class
group we are.
We look forward to the parade season
and the opportunity to spend time together
traveling the many highways entertaining
those that enjoy a great summer parade.
for most members.)
It was announced that Worshipful Master
of Fidelity Lodge #39, Max Pecht II, has
scheduled a Sweetheart Dinner to be held on
Sat. February 16th, to be held at the Masonic
Lodge.
The March 7th meeting will be held at The
Langtry Café in Brownsdale.
Neil Hanson, Business Manager
Nobles Otto Volkert, Charles Van House, Brad Stout and Bill
Newell presented a certificate to Nate Toland of Holiday Cars in
Austin. This was the donation the Oriental Band made to the
Million Dollar Club in their name, as a thank you for their
support to our unit during our parades the past few years
last year's 30 parades we are
Nomads Club
To our fellow Nomads,
As everyone is aware the
Circus is just around the corner.
This year we have elected to sell
items at the Memorabilia Booth.
We will be selling lots of
items, such as, T Shirts, (2)
Hats-Embroidered Circus and
Scott Osterberg
Standard Elephant, Lg. Fezzes
and Sm. Fezzes, Small stuffed
Elephants and Banners.
We are also requesting volunteers to help
Osman get set up for the Circus at the Coliseum.
This is open to all those who want to help.
This is where help is needed: Set Up Day: 4-5
guys Monday morning April 1, 2013, around
9:00 TBA, Nobles or Ladies (3 to 4) Monday
evening 6:30 to dress stuffed elephants with a
banner on its back (bring glue gun). We have
100 to do so with more people it should only
take less than an hour.
Performances: There needs to be 2-3 people
1.5 hour before first show for booth set up each
Drum & Bugle Corps
morning, 1 hour before each show for sales and
then break down after final show each day.
We also have lots of other setup projects
throughout the Coliseum. So LOTS of things
to do.
This is a great opportunity to get involved in
the Circus for all Nobles and volunteers. We
strongly encourage all new Nobles from 2012
and 2013 and anyone who may be interested in
becoming a Shriner, to come down and lend us
a hand to make this a Circus to remember.
Hello all Nobles and Ladies. We sure had a
great turnout for the Winter Carnival Parade.
Lots of units and lots of fun. Although the
weather was pretty cold, there was not much
wind. Our horns froze up, but we could still
play some tunes. It was real fun camaraderie.
Our Potentate was impressive as usual and
stressed having fun and helping kids. He
warmed us up with that big cigar whenever he Dean Brown
came by to say "hi."
The Alexandria Shrine Club with their big four-wheelers was a
big part of our Shrine presence on the street, and the overall Shrine
image was a big hit.
We truly are Lucky to be Shriners. Thanks!
Albert Lea Shrine Club and Albert Lea Cars
Jerry Pineau, parade car
maintenance
Greetings Nobles, Ladies and Friends,
Nobles Clarence Schroeder (president),
“Jake” Loper (vice president) and Greg
Morfitt (secretary/ treasurer) of the Albert
Lea Shrine Club attended the annual
Club and Units Seminar at the Shrine
Hospital. It was an honor to hear our new
Potentate Donald Harmsen speak to us.
And I for one think his slogan for this
year “We sure are lucky to be Shriners” is
GREAT.
To meet our new rep. Outer Guard
Mark Galloway was also an honor. Like
last year the meeting was informative and
important.
Our Masonic Blue Lodge has a Sunday
morning breakfast every 3rd Sunday of
the month. And the Shriners pitch in.
Many ideas have been discussed on and
off for quite some time on what we should
do to raise funds that support our
programs. As Shriners we count on the
money raised with the parades to help our
club. Like most clubs, our membership is
getting older and
younger men just don’t
seem to be interested in
the Masonic order. So I
guess we can only do
what we can do.
It’s also getting to
that time when routine
maintenance has to be
done on our “Little Red
Parade Cars,” which our
past President Noble
Jerry Pineau heads up
and I might say does a
GREAT job with it!
Legion of Honor
March is upon us and
that can only means one
thing, it's almost Circus
time! I am looking
forward to working with
everyone througout the
weekend. As I've said
Rique Beslin before, no matter if you
can help with one
performance or all 10, it is the most
rewarding thing you will do all year long.
As our Circus Director, John Davenport
always says, it's the hardest fun you will
ever have. If you've never helped out at
the Osman Shrine Circus before, really and
truly consider it. It's not hard, and we find
something for everyone, including wives,
girlfriends and children.
This month’s meeting will be at Emma
Krumbees in Inver Grove Heights (wives,
girlfriends and/or kids are invited). We are
planning on doing some planning and
sharing of information for the Circus. We
will be asking for RSVPs so that we may
obtain one of their meeting rooms and we
will need an idea as to how many people to
Directors Staff
Greetings Nobles and Ladies.
We had a nice day for the Winter
Carnival Parade. A little chilly, but no
complaints. We have all experienced a
much colder day for that parade!
Congratulations to our new Potentate,
Don Harmsen and Lady Terrie. Illustrious
Sir Don is right, "We are lucky to be
Shriners."
Things get a little quiet from now until
just before the Circus. We all need to rest
up for THE HARDEST FUN WE'LL
EVER HAVE - April 4th-7th. Those that
John Thordsen, Ricque Beslin, Jim Moore, Frank Turchin, Todd Swedberg and Jim Smeby
pose for a picture before heading out into the cold Winter Carnival parade.
expect for the dinner. Please contact Jim
Smeby or Rique Beslin with your RSVP by
March 19th.
March also brings a few other things, St.
Patrick's Day, and spring!! And what
follows Spring? Parade season! OK, so I'm
jumping the gun a little, but that is when
we get to shine and show off our
organization and it helps to grow our
membership as well.
We are sure to have a summer packed
with parades, and we can always use
are able, the booth set up is scheduled for
Monday, April 1st. Don't show up until
after noon. The trailer will not be there
the night before, so sleep in a bit.
Contact Ron, Kent or Mike to see what
time we will meet at the fairgrounds.
Remember, we need your help selling
novelties. If you have friends or family
members that would like to help during
the Circus, they are more than welcome.
We will discuss who can work what
another member who would like to join us
in proudly carrying the colors of our great
nation. If this is something that interests
you, or you just want to know more about
the Osman Legion of Honor, please feel
free to contact me or any other member of
the Legion of Honor. In the meantime,
let's get ready to 'get on with the show' ...
and may all your days be circus days!
With Pride and Honor,
Rique Beslin, Commander
shows at our next couple of meetings. We
don't want to overload the stand for one
show, and not have enough workers for
another.
Nobles and Ladies, our March meeting
will be held at DeGidio’s, March 19th,
6:00pm.
If you have not done so yet, please pay
your 2013 dues of $10.00 to our Treasurer
Patrick.
May God Bless and Keep you,
Osman Auxiliary Board
Member Linda Johnson and
Kenny Monaghan at the
"Hands On Volunteer Expo"
at the Mall of America
Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of
the Auxiliary,
For the second year in a row, the
Womens General Auxiliary was invited to
participate in the “Hands On Volunteer
Expo” at the Mall of America on Saturday,
Feb. 16. This event provides an
opportunity for non-profit vendors to
display information about their
organizations and bring awareness to the
general public. There were more than 300
non-profit organizations represented at this
event. It was a great day for our Auxiliary.
We were able to talk with many people
about our organization and Shriners
Hospital for Children – Twin Cities. We
had an awesome booth with our DVD
playing, sample prosthetics for people to
hold, a large poster displaying the Shrine
Hospital, lots of information to distribute
regarding our Hospital and our Auxiliary,
and candy for all. Osman also provided
Circus coloring books and Circus tickets to
Scott Hippert - Service Dept.
give away. Our added
attraction was three
members of the Merry
Medics Clown Club: Pat
Johnson, Kenny
Monaghan, and Bill
Callister. The clowns
were an absolute “hit”
with everyone!! A special
thank you to Pat, Kenny
and Bill for your presence
and for making
numerous balloon
animals for the children.
Marjorie Park who is
on both the General
Womens Auxiliary Board
and the Osman Womens
Auxiliary Board,
organized everything for
our participation in this event. Thank you,
Marjorie for doing such a terrific job
organizing this event and for everything
you consistently do for our Auxiliary.
Thank you also to the following members
of the Womens General Auxiliary and
Osman Womens Auxiliary who
volunteered their time to man the booth:
Marjorie Park, Elizabeth Ekholm, Linda
Johnson, Carol
Miner, Kathy
Board Members Linda Johnson, Elizabeth Ekholm, Carol
Miner, Rose West, Marjorie Park, Kathy Flicek manning the
Auxiliary booth to share information at the "Hands On
Volunteer Expo" at the Mall of America on Feb. 16.
Flicek, and Rose
West. We were able
to tell many people
about the fantastic
work that our
Hospital does, and
the great work our
Auxiliary does for
the patients at the
Hospital.
The Osman
Womens Auxiliary
received a special gift from Lee Johnson a
member of the Alexandria Area Shrine
Club. Lee was talking with Tami Norum,
a teller at his bank, Bell State Bank and
Trust. Tami told Lee that as a part of the
banks “pay it forward” program this year,
she had been given $1,000 which she could
give to one of her customers to give to a
charity of their choice. Lee told Tami that
he was a Shriner and supported the
Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin
Cities. Tami was aware of the great work
that our Hospital does as a friend of hers
from Aberdeen, SD, had a child with club
feet. The Shriners in Aberdeen had made it
possible for her friend’s daughter to receive
surgeries at Shriners Hospital for Children
– Twin Cities. Her friend’s daughter is
now a cheerleader! She told Lee that she
wanted to give him the check for $1,000
for the charity of his choice. Lee chose to
give the money to the Osman Womens
Auxiliary. He is aware of the great work
the check for $1,000 to Rose West for the
Osman Womens Auxiliary
the Auxiliary does for the children at our
Hospital, and Lee stated that he is very
impressed that the Auxiliary is staffed with
all volunteers and no paid employees. The
check was presented during the Alexandria
Area Shrine Club’s Valentines Brunch. The
Osman Womens Auxiliary is honored to
receive this corporate gift which was made
possible by Tami and Lee. Thank you Lee
and Tami, it means a great deal to us and
will be used to purchase wheelchairs and
ambulatory equipment for the children at
our Hospital.
I would also like to thank the
Alexandria Area Shrine Club for their
generous donation of toys and stuffed
animals for the children at our Hospital.
Our Womens Auxiliary could not do
the great work we do without the fantastic
support of the Nobles and their wives. We
thank you
from the
bottom of
our hearts!
The
longer I
am in this
job, the
more
touched I
am by the
generosity
of the
Nobles
Dale Graf and friend. The
Nobles from the Alexandria
Shrine Club are collecting
toys for the children at every
one of their meetings.
and their
Ladies.
You
will soon
be
receiving your invitation to our first
Auxiliary event for 2013. Mark your
calendar for April 20. This will be a great
event with a luncheon and guest presenter
Pati Kachel, at the Lost Spur/Osman Event
Center. Pati Kachel is a professional story
teller who will portray Miss Beatrix Potter,
telling her remarkable life story in the first
person narrative style. This will be a
program for all ages; so bring your
children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews,
anyone you think would enjoy hearing the
story of Miss Beatrix Potter.
Mat-Sha Temple No. 62, Daughters of the Nile
Judy Moon,
Queen
It seems like just a
few days ago that I was
given the privilege of
beginning a year of
service to Mat-Sha
Temple No. 62 as
Queen. But when I
think about everything
that was accomplished
this year, I don't know
how we did it all. Of
course I do. It was everyone helping that
made this all possible.
Along the way, we lost some of our
dearest Ladies of the Household and also
took in some new members to keep us
going strong. One was a Jobie of mine
from the 1980s and one was a former
patient at the Shriner's Hospital. They all
came to us with that great energy that will
keep our Temple moving forward.
This year we started some new ongoing
projects. We now have “Ladies
Night Out,: which has been a very
successful program
replacing "Ladies Day
Out" allowing our
working members to
participate. We now
have The Qlubb, a way
for our members to
keep touch over the
Internet. A great big
THANK-YOU to Dawn Hurd for setting
this up and keeping it going. We will be
using this to schedule Circus workers, as
Gummy bears are always available
as an ongoing fundraiser.
Queen Judy presents a Stepping Stone to
Happiness in honorof Past Potentate
Frank Spevak and Lady Joan, who is a
member of Mat Sha Temple.
well as many more things, as we all
become more adept at using this new-age
tool.
We have started
selling Gummy
Bears separate
from the nut sales
with all profits
going to the
Daughters of the
Nile Foundation. So
don't forget Mat-Sha
when the sweet tooth
calls. The reclosable one pound bags sell
for $8.00.
We also have the beginnings of a Unit.
Mat Sha officers presented a lovely and moving memorial ceremony. Left to right, Dorothy
Johnson, Chaplain; Diane Anderson, Princess Badoura; Queen Judy Moon; Sara Malewitz,
Princess Royal; Sara Mobroten, Princess Tirzah; and Jane Larson, Princess Recorder.
She assures me that we all can do it with
But this is no time for us to take it
easy. 2013 is our 100th Anniversary. We
must give all the time and energy that we
can to our line officers to make this a
memorable year for all of us.
ARE YOU READY?
Only a few weeks left, and it is
CIRCUS TIME!
Our circus is early this year and starts
on Thursday April 4.
Circus Director Roger Berge has
been working overtime with our
producer to find new and exciting acts.
The Chicago Boyz acrobatic team is an
entirely new kind of act for our circus.
(could be the hottest thing to hit the
Twin Cities). What can top last year’s
Cannon Lady? How about Extreme
FMX Motorcyclist Keith Sayer? He will
fly across the arena like Cannon Lady,
but without using a cannon!
Crowds will again be entertained
before 3 special performances by the St.
Paul Police Band, and the Zuhrah
Shrine Circus Band!
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
As always, we need YOU at the
circus. It is only with the support of all
our Clubs, Units, Nobles, Ladies and
friends that our circus is so successful.
At Osman, we still
do most of the work
ourselves and
manage to have a
great time doing it. John Davenport
And that is what
makes Osman one of the most
successful circuses in Shrinedom!
Whether you come for the whole
week, a day, or for a couple
performances, we need everyone to be
there and do their own particular part.
