Honoring Tradition -
Moving Forward
Joan and I had a marvelous time
showing off our home town to everyone
on the trip to Chicago, at least everything
below the cloud canopy that seemed to be
with us most of the time.
Upon our return, it was back to Osman
business with the Club and Unit meeting,
Clowns, Nomads and the installation
dinner for the Cycle Corps. Thank you to
all of the Osman Nobles and Ladies that
braved the sunshine for a terrific outing at
Hospital Day. It was great to see all of the
Nobles and their Ladies from all over the
Midwest. On behalf of Osman I would
like to extend a special thank you to
Illustrious Sirs, Dick Thompson, Hank
Paulson and Roger Robinson for
representing Osman on the Board of
Governors for the Twin Cities
Hospital.
I also had the privilege of
being the Degree Director for the
32nd Degree of the St. Paul
Valley of the Scottish Rite. On
Saturday after Hospital Day, we
brought in 14 new Masters of the
Royal Secret. This is one of the
larger classes we have had for
some time. Some of them I
recognized as Nobles with Osman
Shrine. All of them were in
pursuit of More Light in Masonry
and I am glad to be part of this
vibrant group of Masons.
Well, it’s time to get ready for the
summer with the parades, parties,
picnics and the potpourri
of performances. In
addition to Osman activities,
Joan and I will be visiting other
Temples in the Midwest to see
their ceremonials and balls
while at the same time
concluding our preparations for
the Osman Ball on July 28. Invitations
will be going out to everyone in June and
you have some time to come up with a
clever costume or outfit to be seen “At the
Movies.” In honor of this being 2012, Past
Potentate Jim Berg of Twin Cities Magic is
offering a 12% discount on costumes or
rentals for the Ball. Give him a call and see
how he can work his magic to get you
dressed up.
The movie industry is filled with
Masons and Shriners including the movie
spoof of a Shriners convention, “Sons of the
Potentate Frank Spevak and Lady Joan get into
character at Tommy Gun’s in Chicago.
Desert” with Laurel and Hardy.
The Ball weekend will have a
casual welcome reception on
Friday night at the Barn, aka the
warehouse. We will have a full
Ceremonial on Saturday morning
with lunch and then the ball in the
evening.
Trivia question, what famous radio and
television comedian, who was a 33rd Degree
Scottish Rite Mason and was also inducted
into the Clown Hall of Fame?
First Temple parade is June 22 in South
St. Paul. We would love to have every unit
participating in each of the Temple
parades but we know that some of them
are scheduled for the same time you have
community parades. Gary Winter, Chief
of Staff has the Temple parade schedule
out. If you are not committed to another
parade we hope that you will join all of
Osman at both the Parade and at the Oasis
after each parade.
In preparation for the ball and the
Osman Picnic that will be held Sunday,
August 5, we will be scheduling a cleanup,
complete with giant dumpster, for
Saturday July 14. If there is anything in
the warehouse that you want to ensure
stays there, it needs to be marked with
your club or unit name or you need to be
there on Saturday July 14 at 9 am.
Joan and I are looking forward to a
terrific summer and we hope to see you at
the next event.

This letter discussing the First Party Pay and how it affects Shriners Hospitals for Children has been sent
to all Temple Potentates and Divan members, as well as Temple PR Chairmen and newsletter editors.
It is also posted on Shriners Village. We want to make sure we are getting the word
out to as many Nobles as possible.
Official Philanthropy of Shriners International
Dear Noble:
At the Imperial Session held in Denver, Colorado, July 4-8, 2011, voting members of the
organization adopted legislation to allow acceptance of insurance co-pays and
deductibles from commercially insured patients, families or guardians for services at
the 20 U.S. hospitals. The legislation allows Shriners Hospitals for Children to advise
these families of their insurance plan’s requirements for payment of private,
commercial insurance co-pays and deductibles. However, this in no way changes the
health care system’s mission of providing the highest quality of care regardless of the
patient’s or family’s ability to pay.
Families have received statements about these changes to our hospital system. After a
patient’s visit, the insurance claim will be processed and the insurance company will
then let Shriners Hospitals for Children know what the co-pay, co-insurance, or
deductible amount is. Once that information is received, Shriners Hospitals for Children
will be sending a statement to the family explaining the amount due. It will contain
instructions on where they are to send payment. Shriners Hospitals for Children is not
able to accept or process payments directly at the hospitals.
If a family cannot pay their co-pay, co-insurance or deductible, it will not affect their
access to care at Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Be assured that every necessary step has been taken to ensure that our patients and
their families have been informed. We have sent notifications to the families explaining
the legislation and established a hot line for them to use if they have any questions or
concerns. This affects only a small portion of patients we serve at our hospitals. Our
families have been very understanding and supportive of this change and we will
continue to reassure them that our mission is still the same. They will continue to
receive the highest quality of care at all of our 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children.
While this is a change within our healthcare system, it is also a necessary one in order
for Shriners Hospitals for Children to effectively negotiate managed care contracts and
work with insurance companies and provider networks. This change is only an
operational one and will not affect the mission of our great philanthropy.

9am-1pm – Car Show and Garage Sale,
Highway 13 in Burnsville (approx one mile
west of 35W) at the Genz-Ryan’s Inspiration
Design Center parking lot.
From Burnsville, we will cruise Hwy 16
(Williams) west to Qdoba Resturant, located at
Dean Lakes Boulevard, the corner of Hwy 169
and Canterbury Rd. At this location we hope to
have a Shriners Hospitals screening clinic in
combination with possible other Shrine
presence from different Clubs and Units. Here
we will assemble for the next leg of the cruise.
From Qdoba Restaurant, Co. Rd. 16 west to Co. Rd.
17 South (Marshall Road) then connect with Hwy
13 towards New Prague to Co. Rd. 2, west to Elko
Speedway.
Shrine Night at the Elko Speedway completes our
day. Shrine Units will participate in the festivities as
well as a live band. Hours to be approx. 5:30 pm to
when the races end.
This is a 2-3-4 wheel cruise; any type or age of vehicles
that can participate. Osman will be using this event to
promote Shriners Hospitals for Children, The World’s
Greatest Philanthropy.
Price of admission for all or part of the day is tentatively
$25.00 per car.
This appears to be the beginning of a great partnership and
spectacular event.

looking for a
replacement van to
be used to go to
and from parades.
Estimated costs
will be about
$30,000-$35,000
for a new van. A
used van would be
less. The current
van is a 1986 year
and is owned by
Osman. The Board
of Directors would have to decide if it
could be traded in. Discussion stated
that the Board has typically required
units to cover at least half of such a large
expenditure. The two clubs average
about 20 parades per season. They
would be able to cover or finance about
half of the amount. A motion was
made and seconded to recommend the
purchase for up to $35,000 if the clubs
will cover half the cost. Discussion
included possibly designating another
van currently
owned by the
Temple for use
by the Albert Lea
clubs. The clubs
have about
$7,000-$8,000
available.
Motion and
second were
withdrawn.
Another motion
was made,
seconded and passed to recommend to
the Board the purchase for up to
$35,000 for a new or used van if the
clubs will cover a portion. The van
needs to be at least a one ton capable of
towing. This will be passed on to the
Board of Directors for determination if
funds should be made available.
n Chief of Staff Report: Gary Winter
said the parade schedule is set. June 22
is the first parade. Oasis is planned for
Club & Unit Officers: Secretary/Treasurer Brent Metcalf,
President Jim Gratias and Vice President Dave Tabor.

Flags parade since last year we were not

We plan to try to return in a future year.
Gary covered the schedule for other
upcoming events in May, including
Clean-up Day on May 15, Hospital
Day on May 18th, the Masonic Ladies
Luncheon on May 19th, and the third
Sunday “Fun Day on May 20th.
Upcoming Events: Albert Lea Shrine
Club has a steak fry for $15 on May 16.
MSA reservations need to be in by
June 27th in Grand Forks. Registration
is $70 per Noble and $65 per Lady.

June 22 is Alexandria Circus. June 30
to July 5 is the Imperial Session.
Lakeville parade date is the 7th. Car
Show on July 21st is using similar
format to the prior year, starting at one
point and moving to another. Need
manpower at all locations.

There is going to be a screening clinic
for the hospital at 1st Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Rush City, MN on
July 28th from 10:00-2:00. August 5
picnic at Lost Spur. This replaces the
picnic that has been at Como Park in
past years. August 21 Saints game with
tailgating at 5:30 and the game at 7.
n Circus Report: John Davenport
reported. Attendance up a bit. Do not
have final financial numbers. Next year
is our 90th Circus. We should plan
to do something special to promote it
as the longest continuous Shrine
Circus in the world. We do better
than most other shrine circuses
because we do more of the work on
our own. Our venue allows us to
do more of these than most other
do.

pamphlet from Shriners
International that coved
fundraising policies and
procedures. He led a discussion on
the difference between Fraternal
fundraising that is meant to
support your organization vs.
charitable fundraising which must
be for the hospital. Fraternal
fundraising cannot make reference
to the hospital. Charitable
fundraising can be done but needs to be
approved by Shriners International in
Tampa in advance. All net proceeds
(revenues less cost to conduct the
events) must go to charity.
Jim talked about Transportation Aid
and Auxiliary are in need of funds.
Discussion was made about what
various clubs and units are doing for
fundraising. Discussion included social
media, one-day circuses, sales of nuts
and other products. You can donate
funds received at any time. You can still
claim credit for Parade of Glory
recognition.
n Potentate’s Comments: Potentate
Frank Spevak spoke about upcoming
events and encourages Nobles to attend,
with friends and family where
appropriate. He expressed his
appreciation for our support and our
individual and group efforts. The year
is going well and the Temple is in good
shape. The Chicago trip went well and
was a lot of fun for all those attending.

MSA is coming fast. Be sure to fill out
the registration form on-line
(MSA2012.COM) The registration
deadline is June 27th. To reserve your
hotel room through the temple, use the
form on page 21 in this Osman. The
registration form needs to be given to
your club or unit and, in turn, the club
will send hotel registrations and check to
the Osman office. Deadline for hotel
reservations is July 7th.
We will also have a bus going to Grand
Forks. The cost is $40:00 per person
round trip. If we have enough riders from
Rochester, Austin and Albert Lea, we will
have a pick-up point in Rochester. The
bus would leave Rochester at 6:00 am and
leave the Osman Shrine Center at 8:00
am.
Let’s have a good turnout in Grand
Forks and show the other Temples how
great we are at Osman.

Now that all our snow-birds are
returning, it's time to start planning for
the parade season. I think the snow-birds
should have stayed in Minnesota this year!
Mankato Shrine club kicked off the 2012
parade season with our annual spring
banquet, held April 20th at the Eagles
Club in Mankato. All 40 Nobles &
Ladies who attended enjoyed a 4 meat
buffet with all the fixings. We were
especially pleased to be joined by Marshal
Anders Haugen, Lady Adriana was unable
to attend, as Anders & Adriana are

Not much happened this winter with
Mankato Shriners. Ted Hoogenraad &
Dave Peterson attended the officers
meeting at the Shriner Hospital in
February. Mankato Area Shrine Club, in
conjunction with North Mankato
American Legion Club, took a van load of
donated toys to the Shrine Hospital in
December. We were only able to donate
$3000.00 this year to the Parade of Glory,
because of the extra money we invested in
our cars this past year. Money well spent,
they look and run a lot better.
Our annual work day for the little cars
is planned for May 19th, as parades start

Austin Area Shrine Club & Oriental Band
At our May 10th
meeting, Noble Max
Pecht II presided at the
meeting and introduced
our newest member,
Noble Brad McBain.
Welcome aboard Brad.
Hopefully he’ll be playing
Neil Hanson
a Mussette in the award
winning Oriental Band
this Summer.
It was also decided that the Shrine Club
& Band would participate in the Memorial
Day observance. One or more of our
members will attend and participate in the
wreath ceremony.
The July 4th Get-together will take place
at the Gun Club following the parade in
Blooming Prairie. There will be no August
meeting, and the September meeting will
be at George’s in Geneva, MN on Thursday,
September 13th.
Reports were given on the fund raiser at
the Pizza Ranch, which was quite
successful, as well as the Younkers
Community Day Coupon Books. Thank
you to all the Nobles and Ladies who made
these two activities successful.
As it appears the Band will not be going
to the Midwest this summer, it was decided
to submit the application for the parade in
Chatfield on August 11th.
Noble Hanson gave an update on the
parade schedule with the following dates.

The Alexandria Area Shrine Club,
Calliope and Four Wheelers met at Grand
Arbor in Alexandria on April 17th. Vice
President Mike Denke took charge of the
meeting for the evening. A good meal
was served at a reasonable price by Grand
Arbor. Minutes and treasurer’s reports
were approved. Please keep these nobles
in your thought and prayers: Merrill
Pederson, Ralph Tvrdik, Smitty, and
George Kosin.
Circus plans are coming along very
well. We have already received a few bikes
to give away and have been guaranteed
more by other businesses. The Circus is
June 22, 2012 at the Douglas County
fairgrounds with two performances. Set
up is in the morning with first
performance in the afternoon.
Our next meeting is Monday, May 21.
This is our annual golf outing at Osakis
golf club. If interested in golfing contact
Loren to set up a tee time. The meeting is
to follow at the Shrine building with a
6:00 social and 6:30 meeting. It is the
first of many pot luck meetings at the
building this year.
Friday morning coffee drinkers, a
group meets at Travelers at 9:00am to
solve the world’s problems, or maybe just
get together for some social talk. Come
and join in, no need to call ahead.

St. Cloud Zagalas
Hi y’all:

end of Menards in Waite Park and then
Roy Bernick’s collection of vehicles. He
lives next door! His collection is one of
the largest in the world and includes more
than just vehicles.
This event is open to you, your family,

bring your Fez. We are going to be joined
by several Rochester Zagalas members and
I am hopeful to twist an arm or two from
St. Paul Zagalas.
Illustrious Sir Jerry Plachecki has set
up a 33 minute tour (20 miles) after
which we will stop for a light lunch with
separate checks, and then be on our
separate ways.

Meeting the Third Tuesday of Every Month
June – the month of brides and
grooms. What a great month to be alive
and enjoy the lovely weather, golf, fishing,
even parades.
I have just read about our hospital in
the April issue of the Osman. When you
read about it, you realize how great it is to
be a small part of this program. Truly
remarkable what we as Shriners can do for
children, both mentally and physically.
Pat yourselves on the back for what you
do. Join us on Hospital Day May 18th to
see our work in person. It will be a great
time for all.
Legion of Honor
The Legion of Honor held its May
meeting at Tom Reids in downtown St
Paul on May 17th. It was a new venue
and lots of fun. Thanks, Todd, for setting
this up!
The meeting focused on
our next major event, Acacia
Memorial service. Details of
rifles, flags and participation
were discussed. As always the
LOH played a key role in
this very moving event
honoring Masons, Shriners
and the veterans who served
our country. It was our
honor to again carry colors
and provide a 21 gun salute.
It was a very beautiful service
as usual.

the LOH parades that we are

participate. We can teach anyone the
basics of what we do. Not being a veteran,
doesn’t mean you can’t help honor your
country, and Osman Shrine.

Behind the Kart-riding, clowning and horn-tooting,
these Units are spreading the message of Shriners’
philanthropy: “We parade so they can walk.” There
are hundreds of parades throughout Minnesota
and surrounding states each summer, and through
the efforts of dozens of Shrine Units, many will have
at least one Shrine Unit participating. Check over
the list, and if you have a spare afternoon or
evening, come to a parade! Better yet, join a Unit
so you can participate!

Getting to Know One Another
As you can see from the great pictures
taken by the Chicago trip attendees, we
had a fantastic time. A couple of times,
folks got misplaced and had their own
adventures, but we all ended up back at
the hospitality suite that was attached to
our room at the Palmer House Hotel. We
had wonderful food, lots of new
experiences, and many new friendships
were formed. If you missed the trip to
Chicago, you still can "Get Away" with
your friends for a long weekend in the fall
to Historic Boston and Maine. Frank is
busy firming up the plans. Boston Clam
Chowder and Maine Lobster works for
me!
Thank you to all who participated and
attended the Ladies Luncheon in May. It
was the first time we have brought
together, Daughters of the Nile, Eastern
Star, Masonic Charities, Social Order of
the Beauceant and the Women's
Auxiliary to improve awareness and get to
know one another and what we are all
about. Hopefully, this will be a new
tradition that will carry on through the
years. Shopping and prizes were fun too!
In June, Frank and I will be attending
Zor Shrine's Ceremonial and Ball in New
Richmond, WI, and Kem Shrine's
Ceremonial and Ball in Grand Forks,
ND. We always enjoy spending time
visiting other shrine centers and meeting
the great people who are part of the MSA.

will be "At The Movies." On Friday
evening, July 27th, we will have a
Welcome Party at the Osman
"Barn." Dress is casual/picnic. The
boys have been working very hard to

superb ceremonial, lunch and the
ball. There will be no formal ladies
luncheon.

The 35th Annual Glenn Paulin Masters and Wardens Golf Day will be
held at the Willow Creek Golf Course in Rochester on July 23rd, 2012.

4 person teams. Open to all, Masons, prospective Masons, family
members and friends. Ladies welcome.
Best shot “scramble” with various “games” throughout the course.

$50.00 per person includes: 18 holes of Golf, Cart and evening
meal. All tips and taxes are included.

Thank you to all who attended our
May meeting at the St. James Hotel in
Red Wing. It was an absolutely delightful
day. We asked for suggestions for meeting
places, and our Auxiliary members from
Rochester and Kenyon suggested we meet
at the St. James Hotel for lunch and
shopping. Thank you for that great
suggestion Ladies!! The setting was
beautiful, lunch was delicious, and the
shopping was great!! It was wonderful to
have so many members from the
Rochester/Kenyon area attend: Becky

Hospital staff perform

our Hospital is doing

The Womens Auxiliary participated in
the Spring Boutique by having a table
where we were able to display our
literature, talk about the Auxiliary and sell
some of our Auxiliary items. It was an
enjoyable day.

hosting the First Annual BUNCO party
at the Shrine Center. This night is for
everyone, men and women - Auxiliary
members, Shriners, friends, relatives,

play!!! Please join us for dinner at 6:00
and BUNCO at 7:00 PM. It will be a

June 2 is our Salad Luncheon and
Ceremonial. Social begins at 11:00am
with a pot luck salad lunch at 11:30. The
Ceremonial begins at 1:00, all at the
Masonic Center.
Princess Royal Sara Malewitz has an
ambitious program of events planned.
We have lots of FUNdraisers planned.
Many are Temple traditions, and others
are new things we thought we might try. I
hope to see all of you June 23 for our
Patriots & Pearls Fashion show and
Potentate Frank Spevak and Queen Judy Moon

shopping opportunities. On July 21 we
are going to have a Teddybear Picnic
themed event in lieu of our garden party.
This event will be a casual event fun for
“children” of all ages. This would be a
great event to invite your family, friends
and neighbors to attend.
Later in the term look for: a spaghetti
dinner, a paper crafting day, a trip to the
theatre, Cupid Calls and an Oscar party,
to name a few of the fun things we have
planned. We have also started sharing
Ladies Night Out the fourth Thursday of
