The folklore is that March comes in
like a lion and goes out a lamb. For
Osman Shriners and their lovely Ladies,
March goes out like a lion. Real lions
and elephants and ponies and aerialists
and more. Osman is truly lucky to have
so many dedicated workers at the place
where you will experience the hardest
fun you will ever

would love to see
you there, but we
would also love to
have your friends,
their families and
their friends come
see the show. The
circus office has

Ladies are coming up with some terrific
programs to hopefully attract new

month we have a St.
Patrick's Day party at
which our Nobles and
their Ladies will have
a wonderful time
celebrating the
"Green." But we
would like to
encourage you Nobles
to bring a friend. If
you bring a friend,
not only is their
dinner paid for by
Osman, but so will
yours. What could be
better, free meal,
friends and
fellowship! Hope you
can join us.
Some people know
this story, probably
new to most of you.
Joan's father was a Shriner. I
knew that some of my Lodge
Brothers were Shriners. I also
knew that some of my Scottish Rite
Brothers were Shriners. But none
of them asked me to join. For a
year and a half, I was very much
NOT involved in the Shrine. Then
Hank Paulson asked Joan and I to join
him on the Divan. I went another year
and half without being a member of a
unit or club. I must admit that I
fulfilled my responsibilities as a Divan
member but I really didn't GET IT until
I joined a unit. And ever since, it has
been an incredible journey. When we
bring new Nobles into Osman, I would
ask that you get to know them, talk to
them - especially their Ladies. Invite
them to a club or unit meeting and see if
they would be interested in riding a
small car, riding a big car, equipment
staffing, singing, drumming, eating in
the North, motorcycling, eating in the
Valley, selling at the Circus .... When a
Shriner is involved, they will stay a
Shriner.
There is still room to join us for the
Train trip to Chicago. You can still send
in your reservations and you can even
use your credit card through Osman. It
is going to be a trip to remember for a
very long time.

This year our
Circus Director Don
Harmsen is presenting
an all new show featuring white tigers,
flying trapeze, liberty horses, clowns,
John Davenport
acrobats, Jenifer Smith the Cannon Lady,
elephants, Fez Head Fred, Ozzie the
Shrine Circus Elephant, and Yogi from
the Zor Zoo!
Crowds will be entertained before 3
special performances by the St. Paul Police
Band, and the Zuhrah Shrine Circus
Band!
As always, we need you there. It is
only with the support of all our Clubs,
Units, Nobles, Ladies and friends that our
circus is so successful. We do most of the
work ourselves and manage to have a great
time doing it, and that is what makes the
difference!
Whether you come for the whole
week, a day, or a couple of performances,
we need everyone to be there and do their
own particular part.
Sunday will be a particularly busy day
with a Circus Ceremonial in the morning,
two performances in the afternoon and
take-down at night. It is Palm Sunday, so
we expect lots of families! Some of our
best circus years have been on this date.

guys honor us for all we do. Hopefully,

delicious food, lovely decorations,

Nobles and Ladies. We had a blast and

The fraternity is the fellowship, brother/
sisterhood and social bonding of our

Shrine Hospitals including Transportation
and Aid, Family Life as well as direct

Daughter of the Nile, as I am. D.O.N. is
an International fraternal organization
founded in 1913 and has been recognized
by the Imperial Shrine since 1924. There
are temples located in 143 cities
throughout the United States and
Canada. It is a ladies only 501C (3)
organization devoted to helping the
children in our hospitals with service, and
monetary donations to be used for the
medical care and rehabilitation of the
children. We also donate our time and
talents by making and contributing gifts
to make them feel more comfortable, and
loved, during their stay. Each of the 22
hospitals in the Shrine system has a $1
million recognition plaque for donations
received from DON. Twelve hospitals
have two and one hospital has three. We
are close to obtaining our second million
dollar plaque at the Twin Cities hospital.
We also have a unique organization in
the Midwest called The Womens General
Auxiliary. Membership is open to all men
and women. Throughout the year, the
Auxiliary hosts activities for social
interaction and education. This group
dedicates their time, talents and means,
focusing on our Twin Cities hospital.
Their main fundraising mission is the
wheelchair fund - which provides chairs to
our patients.
They also
conduct
parties, collect
toys and
games, and
fill stockings
for the
children at
the TC
Hospital.
Unique to our hospital, and created by the
Auxiliary, is a Parent Accommodation
Center or PAC, for parents/guardians who
are caretakers of our patients to enable
them to stay "on campus" to be with the
child.

Chairperson, Women's Auxiliary, Twin

Osman Shrine Temple consists of a
Board of Directors, or Divan, and over 30
Clubs and Units. The Clubs are social
bodies while the Units are typically the
guys you see out there in the parades.

The meeting was called to order by the
Pledge, prayer and opening remarks by
Club and Units President Jim Gratias and
Oriental Guide Bruce Thomas.
Introductions were made of the Divan,
Club and Unit Officers and all others in
attendance.
n Hospital: Dr. Ken Guidera made a
report and presentation about the
Hospital.
• There were 866
applications and 737
admissions in 2011.
• There were 363
patients seen offsite
in 2011.
The hospital now
takes insurance
payments. It needs to
be made clear to
everyone that the
hospital is still open to
any child, regardless if they have insurance
coverage or not.
Insurance requires that the patient be
billed for
the copay
portion of
any service
performed,
but does
not require
us to pursue
collection.

n Etiquette: Jeff Olsen spoke on proper
etiquette when presenting yourself as a
Shriner. Please be clean and well groomed
at parades and follow your uniform rules.
Remember what you represent. Common
sense will take you far in this regard.
This family told their story at the C&U
Seminar. And she brought cookies for
everyone!

Somehow no-one was surprised when the
newspaper committee came on,
inexplicably dressed in cowboy hats and
scarves and as a Whoopie cushion, to give
their report.
n Newspaper: Rich Purcell and Mike
Nehm, assisted by Nancy Fish, presented
information on the Osman Newspaper.
Again information must be in by the 15th
of each month in order to get into the
next issue.
n Insurance: Brett Boelter spoke about
our insurance coverage. We have $1
million/occurrence and a $1 million
dollar umbrella. Parade vehicles are only
covered during the parade. Any vehicle
operator over 70 years of age should
complete a driver certification. Only
Osman Shrine Temple nobility are
insured, not family members or guests. In
a parade, only Nobles may ride in Shrine
vehicles. A copy of a certificate of
insurance was passed out.
n Unit Annual Reports: Tom West and
Dan Flicek spoke about the annual report.
Clubs and Units should complete their

and submit them
by the end of
February. They
reported that
there has been a
significant
increase in catered
events at the
Shrine Center
since the move.
There are still ongoing
discussions
regarding
building a hotel
on our property.

well and Clubs and Units should
remember that it is available for their use.

parade and the weather
was great this year. We

and the people watching the parade giving

Thanks to IlIustrious Sir Jim Berg and
the Twin City Magic Store for hosting this
year’s event. I would like to thank Rich
Johnson and Jerry Payne and their crew
for doing an outstanding job of taking
care of the Oasis for us. Also to Mike
Nehm and the Directors Staff for doing a
great job transporting us to the start of the
parade. Every time we parade it is another
opportunity for us to remind people of
the good works we accomplish though
our Hospital.
Several of us just returned from the
MSA winter session in Grand Forks N.D.
and the summer session was planned. We
secured rooms for our Nobles and Ladies.
We will also have a bus going to Grand
Forks; if we fill up one bus we have a
second one on hold if we need it. We
don’t have a registration cost from Kem
yet, but as soon as we do we will get this
information to you asap.
The Circus is almost upon us. All
Clubs and Units are preparing to put on a
great show March 29th-April 1st. The
Circus is hard work, but the rewards are
endless. It really confirms what a great
team Osman is. Let’s all be there standing
tall. This will be our 89th consecutive
Osman Shrine Circus. See you at the
Circus.
There will also be a Ceremonial at the
Circus on April 1st at 10:00 AM Let’s all
try to be there.
Austin Area Shrine Club & Oriental Band
Nobles and ladies met
on Thursday, February
9th at the Langtry Café
in Brownsdale, MN.
This is the first time the
group has met at this
location which is under
new ownership. As they Neil Hanson
normally are not open
evenings except for Friday
and Saturday, they did accommodate our
group on Thursday. We will try and return
for the April meeting.
This was a split meeting, as the Oriental
Band held a meeting following
adjournment of the regular Shrine Club
meeting, a practice that will be followed in
the future..
Business items included locations for
meetings, the possibility of working the
tables at the Austin Pizza Ranch for 10% of
the gross receipts, plus tips. It was decided
to try for a date in April. The Shrine Club
also voted to do the Younker’s Coupon
Books again this Spring. President Pecht
will make the necessary arrangements.
Noble Volkert gave a report on the sale
of banners and plaques, and he, along with
Noble Stout, updated members on items
from the February 4th Seminar for clubs
and units.
During the Oriental Band meeting,
Noble Hanson gave an update on the
upcoming parade schedule. As of this date,
four parades are on the calendar. They
include Austin, Blooming Prairie,
Minnesota Lake, and Montgomery.
Band Director Mickelsen discussed the
Ceremonial / Ladies’ Brunch scheduled for
February 26th. It appeared that enough
members would be available so
arrangements would be made to attend.
The next meeting will be Thursday,
March 8 at the Pizza Ranch in Austin.

It was good to get together
with the Nobles of the
Osman Cycle Corps for the
International Motorcycle
Show. We had a great turn
out of Nobles to man the
booth at the show, including
some help from a
neighboring booth. Nobles

received a number of inquiries about
joining our unit which I hope to turn into
new members of Osman Shine over the
course of the year. We all had fun at the
show, which the picture above

We put out a bid for motorcycles this
year which Wild Prairie HD won. Six
two wheelers and two trikes were ordered
and believe it or not the first bike in was
our Potentate, Illustrious Sir Frank
Spevak. We will have a couple of the
bikes on the display at the circus, weather
permitting.

Derald Morfitt received his 50 year pin at

Club & Unit Heads Seminar February
4th at the Shriners Hospital for Children.
Potentate Frank Spevak addressed the
Chanters
group with great enthusiasm. The
program was most enlightening and
informative, as it was my first seminar of
this kind with the Shrine. Great stuff! On
our way back to Albert Lea we stopped by
the Lost Spur / Osman Shrine Center and
took a little tour of our new building.
Very nice.
It was a wonderful honor to see my
father, Derald Morfitt, receive his 50-year
pin, which was done at our Christmas
Party gathering. May I be so lucky as to
follow his footsteps.
Circus, Circus, Circus…. March 29 to
April 1st. This is a major fund raising
event for the Osman Shrine. We need as
much help with this project as we can
possibly get.

We have finally done it again. We
made it through winter to March; the
month doesn’t know what to do with the
weather. Snow, rain, who knows? But we
shall endure as always!
The Club and Unit Seminar at the
hospital was very informative. Dr.
Guidera presented two former patients to
tell and show how good they are now after
what was done in our hospital.
Coming soon --- Ladies’ Appreciation
Brunch. Let’s all show up with our Ladies
and enjoy the time with so many lovely
people. They truly do support us in all
that we do. Our Chanter Ladies show up
at all parades to cheer and greet us at the
Oasis. Just got to love that support.
The Winter Carnival Parade was fun.
The Chanters were in the parade…almost.
Our float had a flat tire, so it stayed on
the sidelines. Chanters rode in other
vehicles. Our float is now fixed and ready
for summer functions. The Oasis was
great at the Twin Cities Magic Shop. Sure
is nice that Fred Baisch and Jim Berg
invite us there.
Gordon Eddy, our 60-year member in
the Shrine, had two hernias repaired a
short time ago. He is doing fine. Jeff
Keehn, our director, spent a couple days
in the hospital, but he’s home now and
back at work. As
of now, our group
is healthy and
ready to go.

Greetings Nobels,
We had a good turnout for the St.
Paul Winter Carnival. Thanks to all
who participated in the parade and then
helped Noble Bill Henry celebrate his
85th birthday. The circus is rapidly
approaching. The dates are March 29th
thru April 1st. We could use help
setting up our Director's Staff souvenir
stand on Monday, the 26th, and taking
down on April 1st. If you are available
to help on either or both of these
dates, please contact Kent (763-755-
6011). Also, there will be a Ceremonial
at the circus, at 11:00 AM, on Sunday,
April 1st.
Our March meeting will be at Jim
Berg's Magic Shop on FRIDAY,
MARCH 9th. A deli buffet will be
served at 5:30 PM (cost $12.50) with
the magic show following at 7:00 PM
(cost $15.00). The magician is Bizzaro,
from Las Vegas. He just finished a tour
of Japan. Reservations are a must. All
Nobels and ladies are welcome.
When the weather warms up, we will
get our parade vehicles all washed and
waxed and ready for the 2012 parade
season. More info to come.

Party at Willow Creek

Traditionally, Osman Temple has voted
to conduct a fundraiser for the year to
support the Temple's operations. This

Legion of Honor
The St. Paul Winter
Carnival parade was
fantastic. The new route
allowed the spectators to
get closer. The weather
was very co-operative. The
Legion of Honor had a
good turnout. Thanks to
all the Nobles who came
Jim Moore
and carried the colors for
Osman. The after parade get together at the
Gopher Bar was great. First time I had ever
been there! Great dogs and fellowship!
Our February meeting was held at the
Mendota VFW. It’s a great place to have lots
of fun and discussion about the 2012
Circus. Todd gave us an update on the Club
and Unit meeting and the Circus meeting
on the 7th. Circus planning was begun.
Noble Sean Gardiner updated us on the new
Mail Chimp features and the website for
Osman.
The March meeting site is being worked
as we are trying to avoid downtown St. Paul
due to the March hockey madness. We will
advise everyone of the site probably before
Nomads
The Nomads are now in
their second year of
operation. We’re the newly
re-instated club designed
to bring new Osman
Shriners and their Ladies
into a social club situation
and give them
Bob Golder opportunities to participate
in the fund raising
activities of Osman Shrine. We further
plan to present programs that will let our
members know about the events and
activities of other clubs and units.
All new Osman Shriners are
automatically considered to be members of
the Nomads. First-year dues are free to
these new members and are minimal to
other members of Osman Shrine.
The March meeting of the Nomads will
be on Thursday, March 8 at Angelo’s Pizza,
1203 Southview Boulevard, South St. Paul.
We’ll start with a social hour at 6:00 PM,
ordering food from the menu. We’ll follow
at 7:00 PM with the meeting and will be
done by 8:00 PM. All Osman Nobles (new
or old) and their Ladies are welcome, so
make plans to attend!

Osman has asked the LOH to provide a
table for the Prospect Party March 17th at
the St. Patricks Day event. We will be
made to support an Osman Shrine Car
Show again this summer. The site will
probably be moved to Burnsville. Anders
Haugen, Osman’s Marshal, gave a short
presentation about the Osman Provost
unit. We learned what they do, how to
join and about the dues and other expenses.
“Nomads” shirts are available and can be
ordered through Doreen at the Osman
Shrine office. All new Nobles attending the
meetings receive our Nomads membership
card.

The LOH will have its stated monthly
meeting on March 15th, at the Fireside
Restaurant located in Rosemount, 3410
150th St. The Fireside is located in the SW
Shopping Center from the intersection of
Hwy 3 and Co. Road 42.
The Legion of Honor continues to look
for good men to carry the colors for Osman.
This year the LOH hopes to do 10 parades,
7 Osman and 3 LOH parades. You don’t
have to be a veteran to participate. We can
teach anyone the basics of what we do. Not
being a veteran doesn’t mean you can’t help
honor your country and Osman Shrine.

The Shrine Circus is coming, which

We held our Sweetheart Night on
February 1st at Michaels Restaurant.
Nearly 50 attended the wonderful evening
of great food, fellowship, and
entertainment. We were entertained by the
singing group "The Added Touch". Noble
Rahn Lund is part of the group, they did a

The Osman Shrine Cycle Corps is a precision

Osman Noble Steve Cortinas was named Boreas Rex
LXXVI for the 126th St. Paul Winter Carnival during a
lavish coronation at the St. Paul RiverCentre. Cortinas is
Vice President with Dakota Premium Foods, a subsidiary
of Rosen Diversified, and a member of Osman Shrine and
Mizpah Lodge, South St. Paul.
Steve’s enthusiasm for the festival grew when he
became Notos, Prince of the South Wind in 2003, and in
subsequent years as he served on the
St. Paul Festival & Heritage
Foundation's Board of Directors.
During the year, the Royal Family,
sporting their colorful costumes, visits
numerous schools, nursing homes,
senior centers and businesses bringing
the joyfulness and merriment of
Carnival to the young and old alike.
Steve along with his wife Joy, and
members of his Royal Family will visit
festivals throughout the state
representing St. Paul and the Winter
Carnival. Their travels will also take
them to several national festivals from
Winnipeg, Canada to as far south as
Bradenton, Florida.
Cortinas said the royal family's
theme will be the "Spirit of 76," and
the court will pay tribute to 76
volunteers over the course of the next
year. At the King’s Dinner February 3.
Noble Jerry Payne and Lady Nancy
were named to the Spirit of 76 group
for their support of their local festivals.

The Auxiliary received three
contributions for our children at Shriners
Hospital for Children – Twin Cities.

Jerry and Tammy Pineau from the
Albert Lea Shrine Club delivered several
bags filled with stuffed animals, a picture
and a beautiful quilt with a matching
pillow case. Jerry said that he collected all
these stuffed animals by asking each of the
Shriners in his club to bring a stuffed
animal to each of
their meetings.
While Jerry and
Tammy were
giving me all these
items, two of the
Hospital patients
came to look at
the stuffed
animals. We told
them that they
could each pick
out an animal, and
you should have
seen the big smiles
on their faces
when they left
hugging their
stuffed animals.
Those smiles make
everything
meaningful!
Neil and Mary
Hanson from the
Austin Shrine
Club delivered
approximately 65
blankets which
their Shrine
Ladies and Unity Chapter #29, Order of
the Eastern Star, had made for the
children. The blankets were absolutely
beautiful, soft and cuddly with a huge
variety of prints and colors! They also
delivered a bag full of colorful knitted
stocking caps which Mary’s
brother, Jeff Boyne, had made
for the children at the hospital.
Patty Adams, Noble Dean
Brown’s Lady, delivered a box full
of beautifully knit mittens and
stocking caps. These were so colorful and
warm looking. They will make many
children at the Hospital happy.
This is absolutely wonderful. These are
all items our children need and want. We
really appreciate all you do to help Osman
Womens Auxiliary supply the needs for
our children.
I hope you have sent in your
membership forms. One of our goals for
our Auxiliary this year is to increase our
membership. Growing our membership
will help us to continue to meet the needs
of our children at the Hospital. We
would like to see Nobles as well as the
Ladies join the Auxiliary. Membership in
the Auxiliary is for everyone!
We are so fortunate to have such a
fabulous group of Ladies serving on the
Osman Womens Auxiliary Board, and
they have planned several great activities
for everyone to enjoy in 2012. Please join
us for our first 2012 Auxiliary Activity on
April 14, at Axel’s in Mendota. The
Luncheon will begin at 11:30 followed by
a presentation from a Park Ranger from
the National Park Service.

Greetings! A gift of
3 million frequent flyer
miles… United and
Continental Airlines
held an internet contest
back in December,
giving away 10 million
frequent flyer miles to
various charities. The
Ladies of Daughters of
the Nile got the word
out to our membership and friends, with
many of us voting for
our charity of choice,
Shriners Hospitals for
Children. On
February 2, 2012, we
found out that 3
million miles were
deposited into the
Shriners Hospitals for
Children account.
Thank you to all our
Ladies who
participated in this
valuable contest.
As my term as
Queen of Mat-Sha
Temple No. 62 comes to a close, I look
back on an incredible year. It has been a
year of tremendous growth for our
Temple and in our giving and
volunteering – I am so impressed with all
of our Ladies! We welcomed six new
Princesses into what I believe to be the
greatest Organization for women in the
world. In addition, we increased our
charitable contributions not only to the
Daughters of the Nile Foundation, but
also directly to our very own Twin Cities
Shriners Hospital.

street - manned by

children’s matinee;

ticket for $1.20.
Reserved seats were a
