Honoring Tradition - 

Moving Forward 

First a note about the Circus, THANK 

YOU to everyone, especially those that 

helped us to diffuse the outside activities 

that took place. This was a first for us, and 

each of us should be proud of how Osman 

Shriners and Ladies deported themselves. 

And what a turnout at the after party. It 

will be a couple of months before we know 

the final totals but I think Osman will be 

in good shape for next year. 

Lots more activities in April with the 

installation of Brian Beermann as our new 

Grand Master. Thank you to Tom West 

and Gary Winter for manning the Osman 

booth at Grand Lodge. We had a very 

good spot and we talked to many 

members and potential members. Brian's 

installation included many Past Grand 

Masters, many of whom are members of 

Osman. The message delivered by Brian 

spoke of the Big Tent of Masonry in 

Minnesota. Each of us gets involved 

in Masonry in many different ways. 

Following the installation I had 

the privilege of placing a new Osman 

Fez on Brian, that of Grand Master, 

at the Lynnhurst Dinner. Brian 

again delivered a message that it 

doesn't matter what branch of 

Masonry in which you participate, 

just that you participate. There is 

room for all branches of the Masonic 

Family Tree. 

As you read this we will be in 

Chicago enjoying the lake front, the 

Cubs game and the sights of 

Chicago. Thank you to all who 

joined us. Plans are 

formulating for the Fall trip 

to Boston and Maine and we 

should have details soon. 

When we get back, we have 

a Club and Unit meeting 

Tuesday, May 8. Prior to the 

meeting we will hold a mini 

Ceremonial at 6 pm. Dinner will 

follow and the meeting will start at 

approximately 7 pm. We have several 

candidates so if you are available, come by 

and welcome them into Osman. 

A busy weekend is planned for May 

18th, 19th and 20th. For those interested 

in the Scottish Rite, the St. Paul Valley will 

hold its Spring Reunion, all of the five 

mandatory degrees, on Friday night and all 

day Saturday. On Friday, we have 

Hospital Day at the Twin Cities hospital. 

A schedule can be found on page 5. All 

are welcome but please make your 

reservation with Judy Cairns. 

On Saturday, a wonderful event is 

Potentate Frank Spevak and Lady Joan pose by

Masonic Ladies Luncheon. All are 

welcome. Good food, activities, 

vendors and more are in store.

Thank you to Rich Purcell, Mike 

Nehm and their Ladies for organizing the 

first Family Fun Day. The food and the 

fellowship were terrific. It was a good start 

and they have plans for improvements and 

more activities. I hope you can join us for 

the next Family Fun Day May 20. 

May closes with a special event, the 

Memorial Day Service at Acacia Park in 

Mendota Heights. This is special because 

through the efforts of Past Potentate Fay 

Hassie, it is a joint Masonic and Military 

event. All Members of the Masonic Family 

are there to honor our fallen service men 

and women. We have the Osman 

Chanters singing and our Legion of Honor 

presenting the flags and providing a 21 gun 

salute. I hope you can join us at Acacia 

Cemetery, 10 am on Memorial Day.

uniform, put new oil in your engines. 

Our Chief of Staff, Gary Winter, has been

Well, how did we do? 

Here is what I have so far: 

Attendance was nicely up from last year. 

We are reporting 28,943 attendees 

compared to 26,289 last year. We were just 

short of the magical number of 30,000 but 

Ladies and Gentlemen . . . 

and Children of All Ages 

with the same kind of advertising and high 

quality show, that should be an easy goal for 

next year. As you all know “BITS” 

(bottoms in the seats) is the first key to a 

good circus. 

Our bank account is looking good at 

this time, but the bottom line is: “Now, 

how much do we get to keep?” We will 

know more as adjustments, returns, and 

final statements are received. 

It seems like we all had a good time, old 

problems were not an issue this year. The 

office again received zero complaints on 

arena cleanliness this year. So a big thanks to 

everyone who lent a hand or grabbed a mop. 

The Ladies (and Nobles) in the ticket 

boxes kept the ticket lines short, and the 

Legion of Honor got people scanned-in 

with very few difficulties. 

Transforming into Fez Head Fred 

Donning the Fez Head Fred costume is a two-man job! Bruce Thomas and Larry Norte 

were caught in the dressing room getting ready. Jam your feet into Fez Head’s legs. 

Strap on the fan that inflates him Pull Fez Head’s body over your body Start 

inflating. Not quite fully inflated. Find a kid to hug!

Remember that the customer talks 

about the show, but their circus experience 

begins with learning that the circus is 

coming, and ends when they get home and 

remember a great family experience. So, 

whether you sold, or directed, or assembled, 

or inflated, or repaired, or gazed into 500 

flashbulbs, or yelled “Get-em-here!” or 

“Follow Me!” you were a part of that 

experience. Whatever you did, wherever 

you were, we needed your help, and OUR 

circus would not have been the same 

without YOU!

necessary, for the Divan, the Nobility, and the seven elected Midwest Representatives to attend the

There shall be appropriated from the Pilgrimage Fund the sum of $2,500.00 or as much as is necessary 

to send the Imperial Representatives to attend the Imperial Session in Charlotte, NC. July 1-5, 2012.

Nobles, Ladies, children, friends and family are invited 

to golf 9 holes, golf beginning approx. 2 PM 

A good time was had by all those that golfed 

April 15. Cost is $10 for golf + $10 for cart.

Kathey Flicek has graciously 

volunteered to make our Bean Bags for 

our Bean Bag Game so we should be up 

and running with this by the next Shrine 

Sunday-Fun Day! She will make 8 bags 

consisting of 4 bags of one color and 4 bags of 

another color for the teams to compete. Roger Berge 

will deliver the board portion needed for the game to the 

Spur soon. 

We are seeking a Noble or two and their Lady(s) to 

volunteer and assist with organizing and promoting the 

game portion of the afternoon and evening (4-7 PM). 

(Nancy Fish is challenging the Chanters and Directors Staff to 

some Cribbage action and has organized a 

tournament complete with prizes). 

If you know of anyone interested in 

playing Cribbage, Bridge or 500, invite 

and encourage them to join in and 

participate. It will be fun for those card 

playing enthusiasts to have a few tables 

playing during these Fun Day outings. 

Remind all Nobles, their families and 

friends that they can bring their bikes 

and go on a nice family bike ride or go 

walking on the paved paths across from 

the Lost Spur property. Everyone is 

invited whether they are a Mason, 

Shriner or not. 

Let's get the message out in the 

upcoming weeks. If you are out and 

about visiting your Blue Lodge or other 

Masonic organization or Club and Unit 

activity, bring this up and invite people 

to come out to these "Shrine Sunday-Fun Day" events! 

A prepared dinner is available from 4-7 PM in the lower 

level of the Lost Spur/Osman Event Center for the modest 

charge of $15.00 including tax and tip!

Albert Lea Shrine Club 

The Albert Lea little red car drivers are 

preparing for another great parade season. 

Wait until you see the new maneuvers. 

Cars jumping ramps. Running those crazy 

figure eights at high speed in reverse. Side 

sliding stops. Wow! And what’s really wild 

is that they can do these new routines 

even on some of those narrow streets. All 

Shriners will be impressed with the Albert 

Lea Shrine Club this parade season that’s 

for sure!

Dear Nancy Fish (St. Paul circus usher director), Dee and crew: 

Thanks again for showing me the ropes in how to usher folks onto the 

main floor area to better view the circus (especially those who needed a little 

extra help from their circus friends. 

How did I show up to be an usher for the handicapped circus lovers? ... 

Upon hearing the media talk about the circus being in town, I had a 

hankering to revisit the circus (after should we safely say thirty-plus years.) 

I happened to be in the checkout lane at the local Rainbow grocery store 

and noticed a man wearing a large pin identifying him as being involved 

with the circus that I knew was in town. I asked him if he thought they 

could possibly use an extra helper to volunteer, as I'd like to see the circus but 

was short on funds. (I thought perhaps I could pay for a ticket by 

volunteering.) Then I got to thinking how much paperwork plus quick turnaround 

time might be involved and almost got discouraged. 

Yet this guy sure has the gift of encouragement ... he said that I should 

just show up and he was sure they could find a place where I'd be able to help 

out at the Osman Shrine circus at the fairgrounds! 

A dream come true... especially thanks to all the well seasoned helpers like 

you!!!

Upcoming meetings 

and sites were discussed,

invited to the residence of 

Noble Dan Hernandez for the May 10th 

meeting. The June 7th meeting, which is 

our traditional steak fry, will take place at 

the Rose Peddler in Rose Creek, MN. 

There will be no meeting in July, but there 

will be the usual Oasis / Picnic following 

the parade in Blooming Prairie. 

Nomads Club 

The Nomads are now in 

their second year of 

operation. We’re the newly 

re-instated club designed to 

bring new Osman Shriners 

and their Ladies into a 

social club situation and 

give them opportunities to

raising activities of Osman 

Shrine. We further plan to present 

programs that will let our members know 

about the events and activities of other 

clubs and units. 

At the April meeting we discussed the 

Osman Shrine Car Show and Tour, 

scheduled for Saturday, July 21. The show 

will be in Burnsville and the tour will take 

the vehicles to Shakopee and then on to the 

Elko Speedway. 

The May meeting of the Nomads will be 

on Thursday, May 10 at the Lost Spur 

Country Club. We’ll start with a social 

hour at 6:00 PM, ordering food from the 

Noble Bill Newell checked on the 

availability of Georges’s in Geneva for one 

of our meetings. It was decided to hold our 

September 13th meeting at that location. 

It was reported that Noble George 

Moline is doing much better, and currently 

is at Comforcare in Austin. We all wish 

him well during his recovery. 

A report was presented on Tip Night at 

the Pizza Ranch, which took place on April 

4th. As it was successful, President Pecht 

will inquire about the possibility of doing 

another night in August. 

Members were also reminded of 

Younker’s Community Day on April 27-28 

and reminded to sell booklets. Nobles Van 

House and Buck will be there to sell tickets 

menu. We’ll follow at 7:00 PM with the 

meeting and will be done by 8:00 PM. All 

Osman Nobles (new or old) and their 

Ladies are welcome, so make plans to 

attend!

location. The setting is fantastic and the 

service has always been first class.

10th at the home of Noble Dan 

Hernandez. Details to be provided by the 

calling committee.

Wow, what a circus!

both the Mighty Mites

create a miracle every day in our hospital. 

Simply amazing the works these people do 

to help the children with their problems.

Legion of Honor 

Legion of Honor presented colors at all 10 of our Circus 

performances, in addition to scanning tickets at the gate. 

The April meeting was held at the Lost 

Spur. We ordered from the snack bar. 

Thanks to Geri and her crew for 

accommodating the LOH so soon. 

We reviewed several new petitions for 

membership. Welcome Wiley Davis, 

Chuck Carroll and Phillip DesRoches. 

Thanks to the Divan and the Nomads for 

helping us recruit new members. 

The meeting focused on our next 

major event, Acacia Memorial service. 

Details of rifles, flags and participation 

were discussed. As always the LOH is 

looking forward to playing a key role in 

this very moving event honoring Masons, 

Shriners and the veterans who served our 

Alexandria Shrine Club and 4 Wheelers

veteran doesn’t mean you can’t 

help honor your country and 

Osman Shrine.

Noble Jim Gratias announced that PP 

Roger Robinson gave him a bag of coffee 

from Guatemala to give away at the 

meeting. President Loren wrote a number 

down on a sheet of paper, handed it to the 

secretary and asked that anyone wanting 

the coffee was to pick a number between 

1-20 and the closest one to it would win 

it. Noble Ralph Tillet's wife Carol picked 

the winning number right on and won 

the coffee. Thanks to Roger from the Alex 

group.

Osman Dragon Patrol 

Dragon 30th - Yearbook. Committee met 

last week to review the layout, and pictures. 

Discussion about finding out how many 

donations we have made in 30 years and where 

the Midwest's and Imperials have been. 

Committee will meet monthly. We are also 

requesting nobles to send us stories from the 

Chang 

past 30 years. Nobles Pavlish, Aikens, Kisro, 

Thomas, and Hubbard. 

It was noted that the circus was a success. Several Dragon 

Patrol nobles attended to help. 

Midwest - A sign up was distributed. The following nobles 

are signed up: Brick, Pavlish, Shufelt, Stedman, C Koenig, 

Aikens, D Rasmussen. Cost for registration is $70. We need to 

decide which hotel to stay at: Comfort Inn is $95. C'mon Inn 

is $135. C'mon Inn is where hospitality room is and is 1/2 mile 

from Comfort Inn. We will register everyone at once, same as 

last year. Please contact Art or Bert to sign up. 

Hospital Day is May 18th. We will take Chang to the 

hospital on Saturday, May 19th for viewing. We will leave at 

9:00 AM from Shopko North. Contact Bill Hubbard if you 

want to ride along. 

It was noted the Mayo HS graduation party is June 9th. We 

may have a parade on June 10. 

Fundraising - The nobles discussed ideas for fundraising to 

help move our golf cart fund upwards. Ideas included: Tip 

night at a local restaurant, sell Chang tee shirts, raffles, sell 

garbage bags were some ideas.

Houdeshell Wins KCRG TV-9 AOW 

Linn-Mar wheel chair athlete Jordan Houdeshell was 

born with Spina Bifida, but he has never let that handicap 

slow him down. Jordan competes in six different sports. 

This fall Jordan became the first wheel chair athlete in the 

nation to win a state cross country title. 

This spring Houdeshell has state best times in the 100, 

200, and 400. Jordan blazes around the entire track in a 

record breaking 74 seconds. He also broke the school 

record for pull ups with 35, and then did 12 more with 

the wheel chair strapped to his body. 

Congratulations Jordan of Marion, Iowa for being chosen 

as the KCRG TV-9 “Athlete of the Week.” Jordan is a patient 

at our Twin Cities hospital! He is a hard worker and an 

inspiration to all!

Buy parking lot, leaving at 5:30 PM and 

drive to Treasure Island Casino. We will 

eat at 6:45 PM at the Tradewinds Buffet, 

cost is about $15.00. Afterwards you can 

go to the gaming floor or disperse. Please

Shriners Hospital is on Friday May 18th. 

Let's try and get a group to attend. Please

13 in Burnsville (approx one mile west of 

35W) at the Genz-Ryan’s Inspiration Design 

Center parking lot. 

From Burnsville, we will cruise Hwy 16 

(Williams) west to Qdoba Resturant, located at 

Dean Lakes Boulevard, the corner of Hwy 169 

and Canterbury Rd. At this location we hope to 

have a Shriners Hospitals screening clinic in 

combination with possible other Shrine 

presence from different Clubs and Units. Here 

we will assemble for the next leg of the cruise. 

From Qdoba Restaurant, Co. Rd. 16 west to Co. Rd. 

17 South (Marshall Road) then connect with Hwy 

13 towards New Prague to Co. Rd. 2, west to Elko 

Speedway. 

Shrine Night at the Elko Speedway completes our 

day. Shrine Units will participate in the festivities as 

well as a live band. Hours to be approx. 5:30 pm to 

when the races end. 

This is a 2-3-4 wheel cruise; any type or age of vehicles 

that can participate. Osman will be using this event to 

promote Shriners Hospitals for Children, The World’s 

Greatest Philanthropy. 

Price of admission for all or part of the day is tentatively 

$25.00 per car. 

This appears to be the beginning of a great partnership and 

spectacular event.

Potentate’s Lady Joan Spevak 

We are all family! 

April brought us showers and flowers. 

Will May bring us sunshine and 

snowbirds? Many of our Osman 

snowbirds return from their warm nests in 

the South. We are looking forward to 

having them come join the fun! 

During April, Frank and I had the 

opportunity to attend two dinners at 

Grand Lodge and the Saturday luncheon. 

We got a chance to talk with many of our 

Masonic Family friends and meet new 

ones. Sell some pins, ties, and boost 

Osman Shrine. It was very special to 

experience the installation of our own 

Osman Shriner, Brian Beermann, as the 

Grand Master of Masons for Minnesota. 

His coin — he did not do a pin this year 

— has a Masonic Tent on it with all of the 

bodies represented. What a great way to 

remind us that we are all family. 

It is very possible that when you read 

this we will be on our luxury coach train 

trip to Chicago. Everyone seems to be 

very excited about going. Riding the train 

with friends is always a wonderful 

experience. As this article needed to be 

written before the trip, I have no stories to 

tell yet! 

What will also be happening this 

month is the Spring Boutique and 

Luncheon on Saturday, May 19th. Grab a 

friend and bring her/him along. We will 

be shopping, having social time, and a 

wonderful lunch to enjoy. Reservations 

by May 10th are very much appreciated 

so we can plan our meal and prizes. 

I would like to thank everyone who 

has purchased a tie or pin for our 

fundraising effort for Transportation and 

Aid. So far, we have raised over $3,800. 

All net proceeds will be donated. There 

are still ties and pins available to purchase. 

Consider a pin for a special lady in your 

life for Mom's day or just to show her 

your appreciation. The Divan Ladies and 

Pote's Lady's Aides have them available 

for your purchase. Thanks! 

Just a quick heads up on the Osman 

Ball this year. Start thinking about your 

costume! It will be July 27-28th. On 

Friday, we will have a Welcome Party at 

the Osman “Barn.” Dress is casual/picnic. 

Saturday will bring a superb Ceremonial, 

See you at the 

lunch and the ball. Our theme is “At The 

Movies.” You are welcome to dress in 

your favorite movie character attire. Yes! 

It is a “Costume Ball.” I can see “Sons Of 

the Desert” characters everywhere! One 

of Frank's favorite movies is “Casablanca.” 

He has chosen to be Rick, the owner of 

the nightclub. Humphrey Bogart plays 

him in the movie. I however, am still 

undecided. Any suggestions would be 

greatly appreciated, keeping in mind that 

it is July!

at the Shrine Center for men and women.

The Womens General Auxiliary had 

their 89th Annual Meeting. Delegates 

from the 35 Auxiliaries in the six states in 

the Midwest area were invited to attend 

this event. Approximately 100 Ladies 

attended the meeting. This is a time for 

the Auxiliaries to share ideas and 

information regarding what all the 

Auxiliaries are doing, and to hear what the 

needs are at Shriners Hospital for Children 

- Twin Cities. The officers for the 

Womens General Auxiliary were installed 

at the Monday night 

banquet. The officers

so fortunate to have these 

women who dedicate their 

time and talents to serve on 

the General Womens 

Auxiliary Board. This was 

my first experience attending 

this annual meeting. I really 

enjoyed the meetings, and I was amazed at 

the impact the Auxiliary has on the care of 

the children at our Hospital. I am so 

proud of our members on this Board. 

They are doing fabulous work for our 

Hospital. 

Remember, Hospital Day is Friday, 

May 18. Everyone is welcome to attend 

this event. It is always an enlightening 

experience.

article last month in my absence.

When Outreach Director Linda Johnson was 

heading for a speaking presentation on the 

Auxiliary in Fargo, she spotted this rig with Shriners 

Hospital decorating the sides. A little research 

showed that this is an effort of members of the Big 

Rigs of the Shrine. Floyd Blinsky of Yakima, 

Washington originated the idea of having Shiners 

Hospital for Children messages displayed on the

62 officers and I are 

very excited about the 

year to come. Someone 

suggested I “introduce” 

myself with a little 

biography. 

I was born in St. 

Paul, and moved to 

Owatonna through 6th 

grade. 

Spent 4 years in Rochester. After 10th 

grade, I went to Shimer College, as an 

early entrant. I also got my HS certificate 

there. After 2 years I transferred to the 

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 

where I met my husband, Richard. The 

Vietnam War changed many of our plans. 

Richard served in the Navy for a total of 

17 years. It was this service that exposed 

him to Agent Orange and brought about 

his death in 2010. 

After the Navy, we moved to 

Leonard and Nile Princess Amy Smith 

at the Grand Master of Masons’ 

installation April 14. 

Minnesota, where I became very active in 

my church. I was also active in the Mrs. 

Jaycees, serving as a state project 

chairman. 

About the same time I started to work 

for Dayton's in the ticket office, working 

up to manager. This job opened up many 

other opportunities in the ticket seller 

community, including managing the vault 

in the Target Center and almost full time 

jobs at the Twins and Vikings box offices. 

Most of these jobs Richard and I enjoyed 

together. At Dayton's things changed and 

I was given a job in Loss Prevention. 

Eventually I became a store auditor, which 

I really enjoyed. Between all the jobs, I 

usually worked 60-70 hours a week and 

one day got paid for 27 hours because of 

the way hours were calculated. 

During this time I joined Eastern Star, 

serving as Worthy Matron twice and as 

Grand Warder in 1982-1983. I served as 

a District Instructor for many years. 

I was invited to join The Masonic 

Women and served as President twice. 

This group was the longest continuously 

active Red Cross unit in Minnesota, 

having been formed during WWI to rip 

bandages, knit socks and hats and 

anything else that was needed to be done. 

I was invited to join The Social Order of 

the Beauceant and served as President 

once in St. Paul and twice in Minneapolis 

after the groups merged. 

My involvement in Daughters of the 

Nile came about as part of a deal. Gooch 

Krastins McKinnon would come back to 

Eastern Star if I would join DON. 

I have 2 daughters, 2 grandsons and 1
