Osman Shriners’ The Legion of Honor brought the jeep and was part of the mini caravan that took the leisurely cruise through the countryside on the way to Elko. The morning of Saturday, July 21 started off with a few sprinkles, then came thunder, lightning strong winds and a heavy downpour. Everything but hail. Consequently, the classic cars did not show up for our annual car show. It was bound to happen. This was the first time in eight years that we were rained out. Despite the rain, we had a good turnout of Masonic helpers, including Zuhrah Shrine, Job’s Daughters and Demolay representation. Thank you to all that braved the storm. Late morning, when we knew for sure that the sun was not coming out in Burnsville, we packed up and continued the cruise to Shakopee. The sun was shining there, but the morning rain in Burnsville crushed all hopes of continuing the car show in Shakopee. Waiting for the rain to stop. Gary Winter, Mike Nehm and Paul Kuehl None the less, we continued our cruise to Elko Speedway for the races. We did manage to pick up a couple of car enthusiasts in Shakopee that were interested in taking the cruise to Elko. Elko Speedway gave us preferential parking, let us follow the pace car to present the colors and allowed us in to the pit area to get an up close look at the race cars and a chance to talk with the drivers. What started out as a bad day ended up being a smokin’, roarin’ good time at the races! Float Your Pote Who will be the winning Shrine in the first ever Float Your Pote competition during the <strong>2012</strong> MSA in Grand Forks? The Potentate of each Shrine will be charged with finding their best two men within their Shrine membership to propel their Potentate across the finish line ahead of the rest of the competition. This event was held in the pristine filtered waters of the kayaking and canoeing channel in front of the new Grand Forks Wellness Center. Rules allowed two men to paddle the canoe carrying their Potentate in an event that also featured a media and a Mayoral race. The winning Shrine won bragging rights and a very handsome trophy to carry back to their Shrine Center. Canoes, life vests and paddles were supplied by Cabela’s. Potentate Frank Spevak in the commander’s seat, waiting for Bruce Thomas and Sean Gardiner to paddle him to victory. Above , Imperial Sir Al Madsen took his turn on the Float Your Pote boats.
