Task 5. What Say You?<br />
Part 1<br />
In Lesson 4, you learned to distinguish between colloquial language and familiar language. For<br />
this task, use your background knowledge on colloquial language to determine its difference with slang.<br />
On a half sheet of paper, classify the items below under the two given categories. Review your answers.<br />
Then, give a definition of slang language based on the entries you have classified under it.<br />

Part 2 (Home Work)<br />
Compose a pair of sentences for every given guideline. One sentence should use colloquial<br />
language and the other should use slang. Write your answer on the back of the sheet you used for Part 1.<br />
Compose a/n:<br />
1. Request made by a character to the sky<br />
2. Statement expressing a complaint about a low sky<br />
3. Offensive question that could force the sky rise<br />
4. Exclamatory statement expressing a character‘s reaction upon seeing a high sky<br />
Task 6. Listen Up<br />
Part 1<br />
Listen to the recording that will be played. Answer the questions that the teacher will post on the<br />
board. Write your answer on a half sheet of paper.<br />
Part 2<br />
Listen as your teacher models two intonation patterns. Listen to the recording for the second time.<br />
Take note of the intonation patterns observed by the speaker on the sentences. Identify the intonation<br />
pattern used for every statement that your teacher will identify. Use the symbols below. Write your<br />
answers on the same sheet of paper you used for Part 1.<br />

Listen as the teacher plays the recording one last time. Review your answers. Remember how<br />
the intonation patterns sound.<br />
Task 7. Ozone Press-Con<br />
Your teacher will play the role of United Nations Representative for Ozone Protection. You will<br />
simulate a press conference where students like you get to express their ideas about the destruction of<br />
the ozone layer.<br />
Part 1-Preparation<br />
On a sheet of paper, formulate three short sentences : 1) a sentence that asks a question, 2) a<br />
sentence that expresses a reaction, and 3) a sentence that offers an encouragement. Review your<br />
sentences. Practice reading them aloud with the proper intonation pattern. Work with a partner. Check<br />
each other‘s sentences and intonation patterns.<br />
Part 2-Press Conference<br />
Participate in the press conference. Raise your hand and say an appropriate sentence when it is<br />
relevant in the discussion. Deliver your sentence naturally.<br />
