Ge<strong>rm</strong>an A<strong>rc</strong>haeo<strong>lo</strong>g<strong>ic</strong>al <strong>In</strong>s<strong>titu</strong><strong>te</strong> (DAI)<br />

The Ge<strong>rm</strong>an A<strong>rc</strong>haeo<strong>lo</strong>g<strong>ic</strong>al <strong>In</strong>s<strong>titu</strong><strong>te</strong> (Deutsches A<strong>rc</strong>häo<strong>lo</strong>gisches <strong>In</strong>s<strong>titu</strong>t, or DAI) is Ge<strong>rm</strong>any's most signif<strong>ic</strong>ant <strong>in</strong>s<strong>titu</strong>tion <strong>in</strong> the field of<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>te</strong>rnational a<strong>rc</strong>haeo<strong>lo</strong>g<strong>ic</strong>al resea<strong>rc</strong>h. While its work <strong>in</strong>itially focused on the countries of the Medi<strong>te</strong>rranean area and the Near East, today the<br />

<strong>in</strong>s<strong>titu</strong><strong>te</strong> is ded<strong>ic</strong>a<strong>te</strong>d to conduct<strong>in</strong>g fundamental resea<strong>rc</strong>h around the world with the aim of deepen<strong>in</strong>g our understand<strong>in</strong>g of histor<strong>ic</strong>al cultures.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>s<strong>titu</strong><strong>te</strong> was founded under the name "<strong>In</strong>s<strong>titu</strong>to di corrispondenza a<strong>rc</strong>heo<strong>lo</strong>g<strong>ic</strong>a" by a ci<strong>rc</strong>le of scholars, artists and dip<strong>lo</strong>mats <strong>in</strong> Rome<br />

on 21 April 1829. Its purpose was to study and promo<strong>te</strong> knowledge of ancient monuments and art, epigraphy and topography. <strong>In</strong> 1833 the<br />

<strong>in</strong>s<strong>titu</strong><strong>te</strong>'s headquar<strong>te</strong>rs moved to Berl<strong>in</strong>. <strong>In</strong> 1871 it was made a Prussian sta<strong>te</strong> <strong>in</strong>s<strong>titu</strong>tion for three years before becom<strong>in</strong>g the Imperial Ge<strong>rm</strong>an<br />

A<strong>rc</strong>haeo<strong>lo</strong>g<strong>ic</strong>al <strong>In</strong>s<strong>titu</strong><strong>te</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1874.<br />

Today the <strong>in</strong>s<strong>titu</strong><strong>te</strong> is a federal agency with<strong>in</strong> the area of responsibility of the Foreign Off<strong>ic</strong>e. Its head off<strong>ic</strong>e is situa<strong>te</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong> and it ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

several commissions and departments <strong>in</strong> Ge<strong>rm</strong>any and abroad. It currently emp<strong>lo</strong>ys about 250 resea<strong>rc</strong>hers who carry out resea<strong>rc</strong>h <strong>in</strong> the fields of<br />

a<strong>rc</strong>haeo<strong>lo</strong>gy and allied sciences. Great importance is attached to the collaboration with colleagues from other countries; a great many projects<br />

take place <strong>in</strong> cooperation with <strong>in</strong>s<strong>titu</strong>tions of the host countries. The departments and commissions run la<strong>rg</strong>e specialised libraries, photo a<strong>rc</strong>hives<br />

and other collections, wh<strong>ic</strong>h are at the disposal of scientists and students. The promotion of young resea<strong>rc</strong>hers is another key concern of the DAI.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>s<strong>titu</strong><strong>te</strong> promo<strong>te</strong>s scientif<strong>ic</strong> dia<strong>lo</strong>gue and publ<strong>ic</strong>ises its work by means of congresses, col<strong>lo</strong>quia and tours. Its resea<strong>rc</strong>h results also appear <strong>in</strong><br />

numerous publ<strong>ic</strong>ations and the members of the DAI regularly report about their work <strong>in</strong> the media.<br />

More <strong>in</strong>fo<strong>rm</strong>ation on the <strong>in</strong>s<strong>titu</strong><strong>te</strong>'s activities can be found on the websi<strong>te</strong>: www.da<strong>in</strong>st.o<strong>rg</strong>.
