Ying Zheng, the King of Qin, was a firm believer in the Theory of the
Five Elements and embraced the theory of the cyclic revolution of the
Five Elements which was very popular during the Warring States
period. According to this theory the five elements, Metal, Wood, Earth,
Water and Fire succeeded each other in an endless cycle, each
destroying its predecessor to give a dominant character to the age. A
sage ruler would harness the dominant element and use it along with its
associated color and number to legitimize his rule. Ying Zheng chose
Water as his element, Black as his paramount color and six as his
paramount number.
