<strong>ICN</strong> <strong>appo<strong>in</strong>ts</strong> <strong>new</strong> <strong>Nurse</strong> <strong>Consultant</strong> <strong>expert</strong> <strong>in</strong> regulation<br />

Geneva, Switzerland, 9 April 2010 - The International Council of <strong>Nurse</strong>s (<strong>ICN</strong>) is<br />

pleased to announce the appo<strong>in</strong>tment of Jean Barry RN, MSC, as <strong>ICN</strong> <strong>Nurse</strong><br />

<strong>Consultant</strong> responsible for <strong>ICN</strong>’s regulatory policy and program work and the nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

education portfolio. She will jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>ICN</strong> staff as of 19 July 2010.<br />

A native of Canada, Jean Barry has 20 years of experience <strong>in</strong> the field of nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

regulation at the prov<strong>in</strong>cial and national levels <strong>in</strong> Canada and is currently the Director<br />

of Regulatory Policy for the Canadian <strong>Nurse</strong>s Association (CNA). Her work <strong>in</strong> this<br />

capacity <strong>in</strong>cludes national licensure exams for registered nurses and nurse<br />

practitioners; mobility and trade agreements; the national code of ethics and the<br />

certification program <strong>in</strong> 19 specialty areas. Ms Barry has provided regulatory<br />

<strong>expert</strong>ise to contribute to CNA’s <strong>in</strong>ternational health partnership programmes with<br />

colleagues from Africa, South East Asia and Lat<strong>in</strong> America.<br />

Ms Barry has also worked <strong>in</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g regulation for the College of Registered <strong>Nurse</strong>s<br />

of British Columbia (CRNBC), oversee<strong>in</strong>g the exam program and the assessment of<br />

credentials of nurses from multiple countries. Previous to jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g CRNBC, Ms Barry<br />

practiced cl<strong>in</strong>ically <strong>in</strong> adult and pediatric acute care environments <strong>in</strong> Vancouver,<br />

British Columbia, Toronto Ontario and St John’s Newfoundland.<br />

“We are very pleased to have Jean jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>ICN</strong>. She has wide experience of nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

regulation and licensure at both a federal and prov<strong>in</strong>cial level, and has assisted<br />

national nurses associations <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g and strengthen<strong>in</strong>g regulatory frameworks<br />

and tools,” said David Benton, <strong>ICN</strong>’s Chief Executive Officer. “Her skills and<br />

experience will support <strong>ICN</strong>'s work <strong>in</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g nurses, patients and families benefit<br />

from the best and most relevant possible regulatory support <strong>in</strong> health systems<br />

worldwide.”<br />
