INDEX
The monoliths, mosques and mysteries of Egypt have been attracting tourists
and traders since the days of the Silk Road and the building of China’s Great
Wall, but those who visit today can enjoy the sights of this wondrous land in
21st century comfort.
Such has been the improvement in tourist infrastructure over the last decade that
Egypt can now boast some of the world’s finest international hotels, luxurious
beach resorts and first class cruise vessels on the great River Nile. Despite the
emergence of all the creature comforts which come with such places Egypt
still remains a destination within the reach of tourists with all types of budgets.
With its partner in Egypt who has been enticing tourists to this part of the globe
since 1919, Bench International offers a complete range of archaeological,
historical, cultural, river cruising and coastal experiences for all tastes. A cruise
the grand Egyptian Museum, the vast site at Sakkara, the Valley of the Kings
SIGHTSEEING Options in Cairo
A city that never sleeps, Cairo is the pulse of Egypt.
Egyptian Museum
The Royal Mummy Room houses the bodies of 11 of Eqypt’s best known pharaohs and
queens. The mummies all lie in individual glass showcases in a sombre, dimly lit setting
reminiscent of a tomb.
Cost: $30 per person (MINIMUM 2 PEOPLE)
Interior of the Cheops Pyramid at Giza
It is an unforgettable experience to climb through the ancient structure of these great
tombstones and into the pharaoh’s burial chamber at the heart of the pyramid.
Cost: $30 per person (MINIMUM 2 PEOPLE)
Solar Boat Museum at Giza
Along the eastern and southern side of the Cheops Pyramid are five pits that used to contain
the pharaoh’s solar boats used to bring the mummy of the dead pharaoh and his treasures
across the Nile to the funerary temple for burial. One of these ancient cedar-wood boats has
been restored and encased in a glass museum and is probably the oldest boat in existence.
Cost: $20 per person (MINIMUM 2 PEOPLE)
Pyramids Sound-and-Light Show at Giza
The Sphinx takes the role of storyteller in this show under the night sky, which is dramatic
and worth attending to see the clever light displays and the Pyramids by starlight.
Cost: $60 per person (MINIMUM 2 PEOPLE)
Shopping trip to Khan al-Khalili Bazaar
It is well worth a visit to these medieval alleys where you soak up the atmosphere of a traditional
Middle Eastern bazaar. Cairenes have lived and traded in these narrow canvas covered alleys
since the 14th century. If you buy a memento do not pay the first price asked, you will be
respected if you are a hard but friendly bargainer and it will usually earn you a hot cup of tea.
Cost: $35 per person (MINIMUM 2 PEOPLE)
Nile Dinner Cruise
Enjoy an evening of dinner and entertainment aboard one of the elegant cruising restaurants,
with views of Cairo’s illuminated skyline while you dine.
EGYPT BENCH INTERNATIONAL 2011

Abu Simbel
The temple of Abu Simbel is one of the most outstanding monuments in the world. In the
1960’s this colossal structure was taken apart and reconstructed, piece by piece, at a new
site in order to allow for the construction of the High Dam and creation of Lake Nasser. Both
the dam and the preservation of Abu Simbel are amazing human feats.
Alexandria
In Ancient Egypt, Alexandria was one of the most famous cities in the world, and Egypt’s capital
for almost a thousand years. Founded by Alexander the Great, and the setting for Cleopatra &
Marc Anthony, it is known as “The Pearl of the Mediterranean”, with its location and history.
Its ambience and cultural heritage distance it from the rest of Egypt, although only 225 kms.
from Cairo.
The Red Sea and Sinai Peninsula
On the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, where the desert merges with the cool waters of
the sea and the sun shines every day of the year, are crystal waters, untouched reefs and a
multitude of shipwrecks, making Sharm El Sheikh a legendary destination with world famous
dive sites. The rare and colourful reefs have an incredible variety of exotic fish, creating an
amazing spectacle in this underwater paradise.
St Catherine’s Monastery
Journey into the Sinai interior to visit St Catherines’s Monastery at the base of Mt Sinai. Here at
the top of the mountain is where Moses received the Ten Commandments. Today the church
is lined with spectacularly ornate icons and scriptural paintings and the monastery museum is
home to the world’s second largest collection of illuminated manuscripts.
Desert Lake Safari or Fishing Safari
This boat safari adventure between Aswan and Abu Simbel covers the area of the Nile which
the ancient Egyptians called ‘Ta-Seti’ (land of the bow), after the weapons for which the
Nubians were famous. In addition to the Nubian monuments this safari will give a great insight
into the wild life and desert grandeur of the lake. You will also visit the temples of Abu Simbel
which are among the most magnificent ancient monuments in the world.
SIWA OASIS
Travel across the desert and back in time to the ancient town of Siwa, one of Egypt’s most
remote settlements. Travel via the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria, and the El Alamein
site of WWII battle grounds. The region with its temperate climate is renowned for its dates
and olives as well as its water springs, and has one of the most beautiful landscapes in Egypt.
Highlights of Jordan
6 days/5 nights
Amman, the capital of Jordan, is a fascinating city of contrasts - dating back to the Stone Age, with a unique blend of old and new. Petra is often described as the eighth wonder of the
ancient world and is without doubt Jordan’s most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction. This vast, unique city was carved into the sheer rock face by the people who settled here
more than 2,000 years ago. Jerash, the ancient city dating back more than 6,500 years and hidden for centuries in sand, is a close second to Petra on the list of favourite destinations
in Jordan. The site is generally acknowledged to be one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. Wadi Rum, a timeless place also known as ‘Valley of the Moon’, is
virtually untouched by humanity. Here the weather and winds have carved an imposing maze of monolithic rockscapes. The Dead Sea is without doubt, one of the world’s most amazing
places with a dramatic, beautiful landscape. The rich mineral waters with curative properties make this region popular with excellent hotels and spas, together with archaeological and
spiritual discoveries.
of Mosaics, dating back to 1300 BC. Travel on to Mount Nebo for a visit to one of the most
