Playa appears safe!
Report by the Publisher
The publisher had the
pleasure of returning
to Playa del Carmen,
Mexico in mid-May
for a week of work
and play after a 14
month hiatus.
The reason that it
had been so long
since the last visit
was more based on
the international
economy rather than
the scary headlines
that many in the
American press have
written during the
last couple of years.
The international
depression that
began toward the
end of 2008 caused a
number of hotels to
board up their properties
and put an
armed guard out to protect
it.
But, now that international
vacationers are
beginning to return, their
is some hope for optimism
amongst Playa
business owners and
employees.
However, three mothers
and a father who work
in Playa del Carmen are
very unhappy with the
United States government
and with the American
press for allegedly sensationalizing
the murders
on the U.S. and Mexican
border.

Runyon would much
prefer “representative
government,” where representatives
can increase
taxes without the permission
of the voting taxpayer.
But Runyon
opposes litigation as the
way to get it.
It is the Business

and I have never been

Rockford. “I have never
seen one act of violence
here ever.”
Rockford admits that
there is a battle going on
between the cartels and
the police.
“It’s in the jungle and
it’ not about the tourists
and those that live here,”
she added. “If you are not
involved with them, it
doesn’t mean anything to
you.”
“They make it seem
more dangerous than it is”
saying that “you shouldn’t
come here,” Rockford continued.
“It’s ridiculous. There
is nothing wrong with
these streets and the
tourist area of Playa.”
Rockford added that
she thought several years
ago when the swine flu
was announced, “that was
(also) a crock of (expleted
deleted). Not one person
from Cancun was diagnosed
with it! The ships
stopped coming to
Cozumel for six to ten
weeks because of it. It’s
ridiculous. Not one person
had it! Nobody had it here
- nobody!”
“I think the government
(the U.S. government)
wants to keep the
money home!”

Canada, has lived and
worked in Playa since
1998. Colvin believes
Playa is a wonderful place
to raise a 10-year-old child.
“For me, it’s a great
place to bring up a child
versus the big city - I like
the small city feel.
“(Her child is) safe,

“Everybody says
don’t come to Mexico. It’s
crazy. You should come to
Mexico. Are you kidding
me? This is perfect. This is
a great spot.”
Shelman said that he
didn’t feel threatened in
any way - “not in any way
what-so-ever!”
He told the publisher
that he has made more
friends in the last six or
seven days that, “I will
have for a long time
because I’ll come back -
and they’ll remember, and
I’ll remember. That’s the
kind of village it is. It’s a
great spot. I don’t feel
threatened in any way!”

Being Brief: Fire District tax hike? Snowball decided June 14th?
Opinion
First, the School District
wants tax increase,now the
Fire District wants one also.
When the Eagle River
Fire Protection District asked
for a sizeable tax increase to
increase the size of the district
and add the Town of
Minturn to it, the Publisher
was in favor of the tax
increase. But, Tuesday night,
May 31st, just before press
time, the publisher received
a phone call from the
District’s polling company in
Florida, asking numerous
questions about the publisher’s
current level of support
for a new, larger tax increase.
The publisher, who has
always supported the district,
is currently opposed to
any government’s proposal
for a tax increase in these
troubling economic times. As
the publisher often says
about any current government
tax increase proposal,
“What are these people
thinking?”
Most disappointing were
the scare tactics used in the
24 minute conversation.
Time after time I was asked if
I supported the district. Time
after time I said I did. But, in
these economic times, government
workers need to
share the country’s ills.
They are the first to say
let the rich pay for everything.
Well, when they have
jobs and many private workers
do not, guess what? They
are the rich! Anyone in this
economy with a job is rich.
Define the term!
Most all of us, the publisher
included, have taken a
financial hit due to this
depression. Our local governments,
including those I
support the most - police,
fire, road crews - need to
share in the pain along with
the rest of us.
The solution to resolving
government budgets, as
a general statement, is to
reduce budgets across the
board in virtually every
department, with very few
exceptions.
Government leaders
should do what the publisher
did years ago during a
downturn, by asking the
question, “if business doesn’t
pickup soon, one of you
will lose your job. Or, all of
you can decide to take an
extra 4 weeks unpaid vacation
on top of the 4 paid
weeks I was paying them,
and then all of you will continue
to have a job. But, if
you all don’t work it out
amongst yourselves, I will
make the decision, and one
of you is out of a job!”
Guess what? They came
together to save all their jobs
and worked out a new
schedule. I didn’t have to lay
off any of them.
This analogy works,
folks. The governments can
take a 5% or 10% cut across
the board and help save
most everyone’s jobs.
Business Briefs gets
emailed by the county treasurers
office daily with a massive
amount of foreclosures
here. It’s scary! This is no
time for governments to use
our tax dollars to provide
scary phone calls to voters,
with too many untruthful
statements for the publisher
to take apart on a last minute
basis before press deadline.
Suffice it to say, I was
very disappointed with how
the Fire District is handling
their financial issues.
Police, fire and roads -
are the three areas many
governments deal with. Deal
with them on a fair and equitable
manner. And, please
stop the untrue scare tactics.
I will gladly debate anyone,
any reasonable time on
these subjects. I doubt my
challenge will be accepted!
Decision on SnowBall
concert return may be
on Tuesday, June 14th
A decision on whether
the Avon Town Council will
allow the SnowBall concert
to return next winter will
most likely be made at
Tuesday, June 14th’s Avon
Council meeting. At a previous
meeting, Town Financial
wizard Scott Wright gave the
council a favorable financial
report on what the concert
did for the town. But, opponents
object to the noise levels
and the 48 arrests as
“intolerable.”
The decision will be difficult,
which is why they are
paid the Big Bucks! Check
www.Avon.org for when the
issue is on the agenda.
Too many good
people dying recently
The publisher often
prays for the souls of the
dead, even for those the publisher
didn’t necessarily like.
It was particularly difficult
to pray for the soul of Osama
bin Laden, but I believe we
are biblically instructed to
pray for our enemies.
I pray that the following
rest in peace:

out of this world. We need to
make our time here count!
