Get To Know Your Car
with Paul Bartsch
This Month’s topic: Summer
Checkup and why it’s important!
Now that old man
winter has left us, it’s
time to get your vehicle
ready for summer. Check
out 3 important tips that
Paul recommends before
getting into your summer
driving mode.
1. We’ve all hit potholes. They give your back a jolt
and they give your vehicle a jolt, too! Poor vehicle
alignment causes premature tire wear. Extend the
life of your expensive tires - check your alignment!
2. Before the summer heat is on us, it’s a good idea
to get your cooling system inspected. Belts and
hoses left unattended can break & cause an engine
to overheat. Don’t get stranded on Vail Pass!!
3. We’ve all had our windows rolled up all winter
long, so if our brakes were wearing, we wouldn’t
even hear it. Get your brakes checked! Summer
means driving faster and stopping faster, too!
All inspections are free!
Playa appears safe!
Report by the Publisher
The publisher had the
pleasure of returning
to Playa del Carmen,
Mexico in mid-May
for a week of work
and play after a 14
month hiatus.
The reason that it
had been so long
since the last visit
was more based on
the international
economy rather than
the scary headlines
that many in the
American press have
written during the
last couple of years.
The international
depression that
began toward the
end of 2008 caused a
number of hotels to
board up their properties
and put an
armed guard out to protect
it.
But, now that international
vacationers are
beginning to return, their
is some hope for optimism
amongst Playa
business owners and
employees.
However, three mothers
and a father who work
in Playa del Carmen are
very unhappy with the
United States government
and with the American
press for allegedly sensationalizing
the murders
on the U.S. and Mexican
border.
JJ & Kim Johnston
raise a 3-year-old
“You guys either fix
this problem (murders by
the drug cartels on the
border) or we’ll screw you
even worse,” said Jeff (JJ)
Johnston, a former resident
of Dallas, Texas who
“Not 1 American has
been killed in this region
(during the Cartel battles)”
said a high level source.
“Only 77 Americans
have been killed in all of
Mexico last year,” according
to another source.
Compare that to the 135
or more murdered every
year in each city - Kansas
City, Detroit, Los Angeles
or New York? Do we stop
visiting there out of fear?
“How about a (expletive
deleted) of bad
press,” Johnston told the
publisher, if the problem
isn’t resolved.
Johnston and his wife
Kim, raise a 3-year-old in
Playa del Carmen, where
Kim swears it is
very safe. They
believe that all the
negative news is
such propaganda
and is designed to
hurt Mexican
tourism.
Char Rockford
raises an
8-year-old
Char Rockford,
who is originally
from Minneapolis,
Minnesota, who
tends bar on the
beach and is a
mother of an 8-yearold,
told the publisher
that she
believes that the
American media is “a
crock of (expletive deleted).
They choose to keep
all the money in the
states.”
Local Dem reps oppose liberal suit to overturn TABOR
From Page 1
Rights, which Colorado
voters placed in the
Colorado Constitution in
1992, could, in fact, be
overturned by an activist
Colorado Supreme
Court, without your permission.
If overturned, your
representatives could
raise your taxes at will, in
good times and bad, for
richer or poorer, til death
do we part, without
Colorado voters’ permission.
If TABOR is
overturned, it
would be a slap
in the face to all
voters who take
their voting duty
seriously.
The Taxpayer
should not be
Local Democratic reps oppose
lib suit to overturn TABOR
From Page 5
that they want to be able
to decide if they want
their taxes raised or not!”
Rep. Hamner added,
“My personal opinion is
that the lawsuit is probably
not the right
approach,” again falling
short of agreeing to sign
a resolution opposing the
lawsuit.
Democratic County
Commissioner Peter
Runyon chimed in, “I
agree. That’s something
that probably should not
be decided in court,”
though he is not a
TABOR supporter.
Runyon would much
prefer “representative
government,” where representatives
can increase
taxes without the permission
of the voting taxpayer.
But Runyon
opposes litigation as the
way to get it.
It is the Business
Briefs paper’s viewpoint
that only taxpayers can
know with certainty the
level of taxation they
can afford, not their representatives.
Because the
publisher was
able to get his
diving certificate
in only 3 days in
downtown Playa del
Carmen, as opposed to up
to 8 weeks by wasting time
in Colorado, the publisher
was able to deep sea dive
during his first 7 day dive
trip many years ago.
The publisher has now
completed approximately
100 dives in the Caribbean
over the last 12 years, up to
225 feet deep.
Diving up to just 30
minutes away by boat from
downtown Playa, the publisher
giant eel, big lobsters, big
crab, found himself in the
come face to face with a
giant Manta Ray, observed
several Sting Rays, and
once saw a bull shark.
been able to take advantage
of diving the wonders
Being Brief: Fire District tax hike? Snowball decided June 14th?
Opinion
First, the School District
wants tax increase,now the
Fire District wants one also.
When the Eagle River
Fire Protection District asked
for a sizeable tax increase to
increase the size of the district
and add the Town of
Minturn to it, the Publisher
was in favor of the tax
increase. But, Tuesday night,
May 31st, just before press
time, the publisher received
a phone call from the
District’s polling company in
Florida, asking numerous
questions about the publisher’s
current level of support
for a new, larger tax increase.
The publisher, who has
always supported the district,
is currently opposed to
any government’s proposal
for a tax increase in these
troubling economic times. As
the publisher often says
about any current government
tax increase proposal,
“What are these people
thinking?”
Most disappointing were
the scare tactics used in the
24 minute conversation.
Time after time I was asked if
I supported the district. Time
after time I said I did. But, in
these economic times, government
workers need to
share the country’s ills.
They are the first to say
let the rich pay for everything.
Well, when they have
jobs and many private workers
do not, guess what? They
are the rich! Anyone in this
economy with a job is rich.
Define the term!
Most all of us, the publisher
included, have taken a
financial hit due to this
depression. Our local governments,
including those I
support the most - police,
fire, road crews - need to
share in the pain along with
the rest of us.
The solution to resolving
government budgets, as
a general statement, is to
reduce budgets across the
board in virtually every
department, with very few
exceptions.
Government leaders
should do what the publisher
did years ago during a
downturn, by asking the
question, “if business doesn’t
pickup soon, one of you
will lose your job. Or, all of
you can decide to take an
extra 4 weeks unpaid vacation
on top of the 4 paid
weeks I was paying them,
and then all of you will continue
to have a job. But, if
you all don’t work it out
amongst yourselves, I will
make the decision, and one
of you is out of a job!”
Guess what? They came
together to save all their jobs
and worked out a new
schedule. I didn’t have to lay
off any of them.
This analogy works,
folks. The governments can
take a 5% or 10% cut across
the board and help save
most everyone’s jobs.
Business Briefs gets
emailed by the county treasurers
office daily with a massive
amount of foreclosures
here. It’s scary! This is no
time for governments to use
our tax dollars to provide
scary phone calls to voters,
with too many untruthful
statements for the publisher
to take apart on a last minute
basis before press deadline.
Suffice it to say, I was
very disappointed with how
the Fire District is handling
their financial issues.
Police, fire and roads -
are the three areas many
governments deal with. Deal
with them on a fair and equitable
manner. And, please
stop the untrue scare tactics.
I will gladly debate anyone,
any reasonable time on
these subjects. I doubt my
challenge will be accepted!
Decision on SnowBall
concert return may be
on Tuesday, June 14th
A decision on whether
the Avon Town Council will
allow the SnowBall concert
to return next winter will
most likely be made at
Tuesday, June 14th’s Avon
Council meeting. At a previous
meeting, Town Financial
wizard Scott Wright gave the
council a favorable financial
report on what the concert
did for the town. But, opponents
object to the noise levels
and the 48 arrests as
“intolerable.”
The decision will be difficult,
which is why they are
paid the Big Bucks! Check
www.Avon.org for when the
issue is on the agenda.
Too many good
people dying recently
The publisher often
prays for the souls of the
dead, even for those the publisher
didn’t necessarily like.
It was particularly difficult
to pray for the soul of Osama
bin Laden, but I believe we
are biblically instructed to
pray for our enemies.
I pray that the following
rest in peace:
• George McRory, a friend
who once operated Avon
Quick Print with Gloria *****
• Java Joe, a friend and
source on what was happening
in Mexico - never a dull
moment around Joe!
• Tim Cochrane, a good guy
who helped save a lot of
lives. Best funeral I’ve ever
attended!
• Tucker Thissen - a young
man who passed way before
his time. Very sad, indeed!
None of us will make it
out of this world. We need to
make our time here count!
My condolences to all
the families of the above.
May those who passed
on truly rest in peace in a
better world!
