Snowball crime grows times 3 - Avon Police amaze us!
AVON - The second
SnowBall Festival ended
last week after a cold, but
clear weekend with
another 10,000 or so
young people coming to
Eagle County.
Last year’s Vail Daily
headline read, “Snow
Ball’s crowds were mostly
polite,” with a contradictory
sub-headline that
read, “Police make fewer
than 50 arrests at 3-day
festival.”
“Fewer than 50
arrests?” Business Briefs
questioned. “That seems
good. They were polite
criminals! But, really, it’s
bad, very bad!”
Last year, the now
defunct Vail
Mountaineer’s front-page
headline read, “Snow
Ball a boon to business.”
Wow, that’s really
good,” Business Briefs
wrote last year.
So, after some nudging
by a few advertisers,
Business Briefs eventually
came around and actually
supported a second
event in Avon, telling the
council that they need to
work on reducing the
crime for this year.
The old, naive
Business Briefs’ publisher
actually thought that
48 arrests from a year ago
would surely drop to at
least 30 or so.
But, with 159 arrests,
either directly at
Snowball or indirectly
after Snowball (including
some 19 DUI arrests), it is
time to consider if this is
really the way we want to
make a living
in Eagle
County on taxpayer-owned
land.
Last year,
police attributed
on 5 DUI
arrests to
SnowBall.
A n d ,
r e m e m b e r ,
wasn’t someone
killed on
the frontage
road while
walking late at
night by an
attendee of
Snowball?
If we are
wrong about
attributing that
to SnowBall,
we apologize. But, clearly
something has to be done
to curb this kind of stuff
before innocent people
who don’t attend snowball
are killed by
screwed-up people who
do attend Snowball.
Business Briefs likes
the promoters!
Before going there,
Business Briefs doesn’t
have a problem with the
promoters, Chad
Donnelly and Scottie
Staughton. We believe
they are good promoters.
Obviously, they know
how to market and
advertise to get a crowd
to come here.
But, clearly this event
attracts the wrong kind of
people to Eagle County.
We do not want to be
known as the DrugFest-
CrimeFest capital of the
world. Or, do we?
Yes, we’ve heard the
mantra that we were kids
once and don’t you
remember what you were
like when you were a
kid?
Yes, actually, we do
remember. But, what is
remembered is not all
that great. In fact, too
many of those that overindulged
went on to live
horrendous drug-filled
lives with low-paying
jobs, etc.
He seemed
Avon Police Lt. Greg
that was setup to coordinate
the vast number of
law enforcement agencies
that came for the weekend
and assisted in all the
arrests.
Watching stupid
very sad, and hearing
about them barfing all
over everything was also
difficult to stomach, pun
Why would we want
to attract these people to
our community and hold
events that help turn this
