Snowball crime grows times 3 - Avon Police amaze us!
Analysis
Copyright 2012
AVON - The second
SnowBall Festival ended
last week after a cold, but
clear weekend with
another 10,000 or so
young people coming to
Eagle County.
Last year’s Vail Daily
headline read, “Snow
Ball’s crowds were mostly
polite,” with a contradictory
sub-headline that
read, “Police make fewer
than 50 arrests at 3-day
festival.”
“Fewer than 50
arrests?” Business Briefs
questioned. “That seems
good. They were polite
criminals! But, really, it’s
bad, very bad!”
Last year, the now
defunct Vail
Mountaineer’s front-page
headline read, “Snow
Ball a boon to business.”
Wow, that’s really
good,” Business Briefs
wrote last year.
So, after some nudging
by a few advertisers,
Business Briefs eventually
came around and actually
supported a second
event in Avon, telling the
council that they need to
work on reducing the
crime for this year.
The old, naive
Business Briefs’ publisher
actually thought that
48 arrests from a year ago
would surely drop to at
least 30 or so.
But, with 159 arrests,
either directly at
Snowball or indirectly
after Snowball (including
some 19 DUI arrests), it is
time to consider if this is
really the way we want to
make a living
in Eagle
County on taxpayer-owned
land.
Last year,
police attributed
on 5 DUI
arrests to
SnowBall.
A n d ,
r e m e m b e r ,
wasn’t someone
killed on
the frontage
road while
walking late at
night by an
attendee of
Snowball?
If we are
wrong about
attributing that
to SnowBall,
we apologize. But, clearly
something has to be done
to curb this kind of stuff
before innocent people
who don’t attend snowball
are killed by
screwed-up people who
do attend Snowball.
Business Briefs likes
the promoters!
Before going there,
Business Briefs doesn’t
have a problem with the
promoters, Chad
Donnelly and Scottie
Staughton. We believe
they are good promoters.
Obviously, they know
how to market and
advertise to get a crowd
to come here.
But, clearly this event
attracts the wrong kind of
people to Eagle County.
We do not want to be
known as the DrugFest-
CrimeFest capital of the
world. Or, do we?
We could become a
Yes, we’ve heard the
mantra that we were kids
remember what you were
like when you were a
kid?
Yes, actually, we do
remember. But, what is
remembered is not all
that great. In fact, too
many of those that overindulged
went on to live
Mobile Command Post
that was setup to coordinate
the vast number of
law enforcement agencies
that came for the weekend
and assisted in all the
arrests.
Watching stupid
young kids gets get
very sad, and hearing
about them barfing all
over everything was also
difficult to stomach, pun
Why would we want
to attract these people to
our community and hold
pleasant experience, yet
approximately 50% of all
marriages end in divorce.
If you find yourself
going down that road, the
next issue is whether you do
it yourself, get an attorney
for each party and fight it
out, or decide to save money
and time and mediate.
The latter works well if
both parties can come to
agreement on the crucial
issues.
The parties need to
decide on many situations
involving the children,
including child support,
physical custody, and how to
make decisions for education,
medical and religion.
The parties also need to
eventually agree on division
of property, including real
estate, furnishings, cars,
bank accounts, retirement
funds, and many others.
There are many forms
that must be provided to the
court, and the process takes a
minimum of 90 days from
the original filing.
Sometimes, when money
is tight, it is tempting to do it
yourself. Usually, it doesn’t
take long before the parties
can’t agree on an issue and
things come to a stand-still.
This is where having an
attorney to guide you
through the process, and all
the intricacies involved, is
extremely valuable.
This doesn’t have to be
an expensive process. If the
parties can agree to the education
a mediator can provide,
and make well-advised
decisions, the process can be
simple and inexpensive.
Heather Lemon is an
No fighting is allowed!
If people want to fight
with two attorneys, they can
hire others and go through
the fun and expense of
“divorce wars.”
If they want to work
things out amicably, according
to Colorado law, then
Ms. Lemon can guide them.
lovely valley … Thanks Dave!
When Dave Kemmerly takes a
break on Mondays and Tuesdays,
you can again hear the beautiful
singing and guitar work of Donny
Ziegelbein in the Hyatt Lobby bar.
Donny is occasionally joined by various
friends of his that add different
textures to his already very interesting
show.
The Lobby shows at the Park
Hyatt begin at 3:30pm. and run
until 6pm, and will continue
through the end of the season. As
with the McCoy’s shows, when the
weather warms up, it is not uncommon
for the Hyatt Lobby entertainers
to move out back, mountainside
for their shows.
Splendido at Beaver Creek
One of the consistently excellent
live music and dining experiences
in our valley’s entire history is
Splendido at The Chateau in Beaver
Creek. Chef David Walford is
always coming up with wonderful
new ideas for the most discerning
gastronomes and also does a phenomenal
job with all of the aspects
of his restaurant. The live music at
Finnie, a Vail and Aspen favorite
since the late 80s, tinkles the ivories
at Splendido Sunday through
Wednesday evenings. Bob starts
performing around 7pm. On
Tuesday evenings, Bob is joined by
the incomparable Beth Swearingen.
Beth has been wowing audiences on
Broadway (and all the other major
stages of the world) since she was
just a wee lass!
In the late 1980s, Beth decided
Other longtime favorite entertainers
Peter Vavra and Pat Hamilton perform
at Splendido on Thursday
Vavra is one of the most sensitive
pianists I have ever had the pleasure
wonderful Guitarist and an even
these two extraordinary talents is
something that audiences will
Tony Gulizia, (Tony G. to his
Now that James Brown is gone,
I am pretty sure that Tony Gulizia is
the hardest working man in show
for first place with another colleague
of mine! Tony has an unbelievable
talent for making music
when Tony plays and sings. Our
school system also benefits from
Tony’s talents and kindness with
Along with his brother Joey and
an ensemble of other outrageously
talented people, Tony has spent the
last two decades giving selfless of
and fostering in these lucky kids the
The world is not ending in 2012 - Mayan Prophecy
By Simone Fodde
The bulk of
Coba's major
Last fall, I visited Playa
del Carmen, Mexico, located
in the Yucatan peninsula, to
get beach time and dental
c o n s t r u c t i o n
seems to have
been made in
the middle and
work done. Unfortunately, the
weather was rainy, so I decided
late
period,
Classic
about
to get out of the coastal 500 to 900, with
rain and travel inland 40 kilometers
most of the
north of Tulum, where dated hiero-
the pre-Columbian Mayan
city of Coba (Co-ba), now in
ruins, is located.
Coba was built around
two lagoons. A series of elevated
glyphic inscriptions
from the
7th century.
H o w e v e r
Coba remained
stone and plaster roads an important
radiate from the central site to site in the Postvarious
smaller sites near and Classic era
far. These are known by the
Maya term “sacbe” (sockbay).
Some of these causeways
go east to the Caribbean
coast, and the longest runs
over 100 kilometers (62 mi)
when new temples
were built
and old ones kept in repair
until the 14th century.
I advise hiring a guide
during a tour of the pyramid.
it’s mostly a new-age interpretation
that this planetary transition
will culminate for great
transformation for both the
westwards. The site contains They are delightfully planet Earth and its inhabitants.
several large temple pyramids,
and the tallest is known
informed and eager to talk
about the misinformation on My research shows that
a positive physical and spiritual
as the Nohoch Mul group of
structures, being some 42
the 2012 Mayan prophecy.
He mentioned the discrepancy
transformation
from the year 2012.
starts
meters (138 ft) in height.
Coba is estimated to have
had some 50,000 inhabitants
(possibly more) at its peak of
civilization, and the built-up
area extends over 80 km. The
site was occupied by a sizable
agricultural population by the
1st century.
between what is
known as apocalyptic writings,
which he says, is a
description of various astrological
alignments that culminates
in the date of December
21st, 2012.
Once home, I decided to
research this and found that
Others have interpreted
the Mayan prediction as the
cataclysmic end of the world,
including the Earth collision
with a black hole or a passing
asteroid or a planet called
Nibiru.
However, over a century
of scientific research has failed
Early Season Specials
Simone Fodde below and above the 121 steps
to the top of Coba, above jungle treetops!
to prove the
existence of
such planet.
Professional
Mayan scholars,
including
my guide, dismiss
any cataclysmic
event,
and assert that
these dooming
predictions are
not part of the
classic Mayan
a c c o u n t s .
A s t ro n o m e r s
and scientists
have rejected
these proposed
events as pseudoscience.
There are a variety of
beliefs about 2012, from the
spiritually transformative to
the apocalyptic. The word
“Apocalypse” in ancient
Greek means ”lifting of the
veil” or “revelation” - a disclosure
of something hidden
from the majority of mankind.
Both the Hopi Indians
and the Mayans recognize
that we are approaching the
end of a new world age. Both
Hopi and Mayan elders recognize
that is not a prophecy of
doom.
The world will not come
to an end. Rather, this is a time
of transition from one world
age to another.
In the worlds of historian
Joseph Robert Jochman
(PH.D.), “Our moving
through with either resistance
or acceptance will determine
whether the transition will
happen with cataclysmic
changes or gradual peace and
tranquility.”
The same can be found
reflected in the prophecies of
many Native American
visionaries from Black Elk to
Sun Bear”.
Some further research
describes these events as the
“Reawakening of the sacred
feminine”
energy.
Nicaraguan Grandmother
Flordemayo of the
International council of the 13
Indigenous Grandmothers
says that the final pictogram
from the “Mayan Story of
Creation” shows the resurgence
of the feminine energy.
In her words, “2012 is
such a profound archetype …
personally, I think it’s about
transformation and renewal.
It is nothing as simplistic as
the end of the world.”
So, there it is - the rest of
the story about the Mayan
prophecy and this amazing
2012. Transform, renew,
research!
Bankruptcy allows for a fresh start in life!
Advertorial by
Attorney Ed Woodland
In the last three years,
a lot of bad things have
happened to good people
in this valley. We all know
at least one person who
has lost all of their home
equity, lost a job, been
foreclosed on, spent all of
their savings paying their
creditors, been turned
down for a loan modification,
had their wages garnished,
been sued, or lost
everything.
You don’t have to be
the next victim on the list.
Bankruptcy can help!
The specific benefits
to filing for bankruptcy
are varied, depending
upon whether you file
under Chapter 7 or
Chapter 13, as well as the
specific circumstances of
your financial situation
and your case itself.
Possibly the most important
benefit at the start of
the bankruptcy process is
that all debt collection
efforts must cease, once
you file your bankruptcy
petition.
This means that creditor
harassment, wage garnishment,
foreclosure,
debt
collection lawsuits, repossession
and all related
activity must be placed on
hold. Filing for bankruptcy
can give you muchneeded
breathing room as
you figure out what to do
to save your home from
foreclosure, or what debts
you wish to reaffirm so
you can keep certain
property.
It is a common misconception
that filing for
bankruptcy will mean
that you will lose your
home, your car, your business
and all of your possessions,
and that you
will not be able to rebuild
your credit in the future.
This is simply not the
truth!
Even when filing for
bankruptcy, you can
ensure that certain assets
are protected, particularly
if you file under Chapter
13 and undergo a reorganization
of your debt,
Attorney Ed
Woodland says
bankruptcy law
truly offers people
a second
chance - a fresh
start!
rather than a liquidation
of assets to pay off creditors.
When a Chapter 7 or
Chapter 13 bankruptcy is
successfully completed,
all eligible debt will be
discharged. You will be
free and clear of all eligible
debt and will have no
further obligation to those
creditors.
This is the final goal of
any bankruptcy case and
the reason it can benefit a
debtor so greatly.
Bankruptcy law truly
offers people a second
chance - a fresh start!
Bankruptcy Myths
There are many myths
about how difficult life
can be after bankruptcy.
Some may say that it will
be impossible to buy a
home or a car, or that you
can never rebuild your
credit. This is simply
untrue.
Most of our clients feel
a great deal of relief after
filing for bankruptcy. In
taking control of their
finances, stopping foreclosure
and discharging
debt, they are able to
breathe again and have
the opportunity to make
the right decisions this
time around, in order to
avoid a similar situation
again in the future.
Bankruptcy is a valuable
legal recourse that
enables people to get a
fresh start financially.
I welcome you to contact
our firm and talk to
us about how bankruptcy
can benefit you and your
family.
We can do better
It is always easier to
go along to get along. We
have absurd political parties
that have helped
destroy our country with
this kind of thinking.
Some one once phrased
it, “Stinkin’ Thinkin’!”
We have good promoters.
Let’s tell them to
attract the kind of people
we want in Eagle
County!
Let’s use taxpayer
It reminds
Chief Bob Ticer
Clearly, he was interested
in solving real crime, not
just the traffic kind we’ve
come to get used to in
Eagle County.
Chief Ticer and his
crew has had some
notable busts, with the
latest being the so-called
Bridge Street Bandit, who
allegedly committed
large numbers of thefts,
mostly in Vail, and made
a donkey out of the Vail
Some one told us that
entertainment headliner
Snoop Dog must have
used the phrase MF 50
times during his show!
What are we doing with
this kind of act hypnotizing
Police Chief.
Ticer and his crew did
old-fashioned police
work to bring the bandit
to justice, and noticeably,
those types of crimes
aren’t being reported
anymore.
Ticer told Business
Briefs that his job was to
follow the policy that the
Avon Town Council
wants done.
He indicated that if he
had more people,
he could have
actually made
more arrests!
G r e a t .
That’s what we
need - MORE
ARRESTS!
What kind
of policy is this?
Ticer said
that his job is to
provide the
council with the
data. The council’s
job is to
make policy.
“Whatever
is made, I’ll work
diligently to be
prepared,” he
stated.
Not criticizing Avon
our families, our friends,
our customers, our
events in our county.
God forbid we continue
this type of activity
and innocent people die
from people that are out
of their voluntarily druginfested
minds.
Yes, we’re opposed to
the War on Drugs. That
war kills innocent people
also. We get that.
But, staging the kind
of events that invite the
wrong kind of people
here is ludicrous.
It has been said that if
we hang out with the
wrong kind of people, we
will become like those
people.
They will change us.
We will not change them!
The Avon Council
should work with the
promoters to provide a
better SnowBall for next
year. And, with proper
thinking, we can do this
constitutionally!
Advertiser says
Business Briefs tries!
Dear Publisher,
No one can say that you
don't aim to please. Here's
the (ad) copy. If you can
manage to get it in (late
change), that would be great.
Regards,
Scott Wirth, Ace Hardware
Publisher’s response: Dear
Scott, One of our competitors,
the SneakPeak weekly,
has the following Late Fee
Policy, according to their rate
sheet: “Each advertiser is
guaranteed two changes per
ad per week. If you have
three or more changes, you
will be charged $25.00 per
adjustment. Corrections do
not apply. A late fee will be
applied for any materials
submitted after the deadline.
The fee is $50.00 per ad.”
Business Briefs does none of
this - never has and never
will! Our policy is very simple,
as stated in the blue box
of the Business Briefs 2012-
2013 Publication Schedule,
often on the back page of the
paper. Our policy is, “Past
the deadline? Call anyway!”
If we can possibly make the
changes (free, of course) any
advertiser requests past the
deadline, and still meet our
print deadline, why wouldn’t
we? And, we will never
charge a production fee, let
alone a late fee. Business
Briefs is in the business to
serve our advertisers - our
Vail resident opposed
to selling town hall!
Dear Publisher,
This is in reference to
your article in the February
9th edition regarding (the
Vail council’s attempted sale
of) Town of Vail property.
This subject MUST be
kept on the FRONT PAGE of
your newspaper. I encourage
the other newspaper, the
Vail Daily, to do the same.
This project, as presented
by the Town of Vail, is one
big mistake.
Dick Neal, Vail
Publisher’s response: Your
wish is our command! When
I approached Don Rogers,
the Daily’s publisher, and
suggested they “bit” about
all the propaganda that the
town would make so much
money off the medical center,
I explained that the town
receives no sales tax and
property tax revenues directly
from this deal. Rogers
said, “I get your point,” but
never did anything about it.
That is why Business Briefs
exists. We actually try to do
what’s best for the community,
no matter the cost to us
personally. Always have,
always will. The publisher
suggests you contact Kaye
Somebody actually doesn’t
appreciate Business Briefs!
Dear Publisher,
You guys may be the
dumbest people to ever put a
newspaper out in the history
of the world. You suck!
Your article on the limo
situation is a joke. Check the
Public Utility Commission
(PUC) laws on what limos
are allowed to do. They can't
stage within 150 ft of a taxi
stand and they cant pick up
walk ups. The end. Its the
law, you idiots.
The cops enforce those
things called laws. Just get a
taxi license if you want to be
a taxi. You people are so stupid
it hurts.
The owner of that rag
you call a "Business Briefs"
doesn't go to New York
because the taxi drivers
smell? Amazing journalism.
Your comments on all of
the alleged incidents to with
this article had no facts to
back them up. None! Its not
journalism if you can't substantiate
any of your "facts."
If you are reading this
and you didn't have anything
to do with this awful
article, you need to quit that
crap hole of a rag and get a
real job. You will only hurt
yourself by listing this place
on your resume. Wow! I can't
believe how bad this is.
Words can't describe how
bad of a paper you put out.
The "Enquirer" called.
They want their idiot writers
back to write about Elvis
being alive with aliens in
another galaxy.
Signed: Juan or Warren or
whatever
Publisher’s response: Dear
whoever wrote this? Since
you failed to sign your name,
we cannot be certain who
you are. We love letters like
yours. You get to allege. We
get to respond.
we get to opine. We are all
entitled to our opinions. We
agree that allegations are not
always facts. Duh!
• The Public Utility
Commission is not the
supreme law of the land. The
federal constitution is. They
used to teach that in the public
high schools. Laws that
violate the constitution are
“null and void and of no
force or effect” - Marbury vs.
Madison U. S. Supreme
Court decision around 1814?
• We are entitled to not go
anywhere we don’t want to.
The publisher is not fond of
New York. The publisher’s
last trip to New York was to
bust a Bernie Madoff kind of
guy who ripped off two
older women for $360,000.00.
The publisher set him up, the
Postal detective offered the
publisher a job as a Postal
detective, and the 35-yearold
female U. S. attorney literally
jumped up and down
when she realized the publisher
got the goods on the
bad guy! The publisher
respectfully declined the job,
saying he’d rather live in
Colorado.
• Quit our job? But the low
pay and the incredibly long
hours, including all-nighters
during deadline week, are so
attractive. Why work a real
job (40 hours per week)
when we can work 80 to 100
hours per week?
• Occasionally, the publisher
does dumb things.
• Occasionally, the publisher
is an idiot.
• Occasionally, the publisher
does suck - hot fudge marshmallow
milk shakes that he
invented while working as a
soda jerk in high school.
That’s soda jerk, not sort-ofa-jerk.
• Occasionally, the publisher
cracks funny jokes, but isn’t
quitting his day job, even
though you’d like him to.
• We dislike monopolies -
ski mountain monopolies,
newspaper monopolies, the
former NBC, ABC, CBS
monopolies until cable
came into being, and taxi
monopolies.
• We do like freedom. We
like the freedom to write our
opinion, and the freedom to
print your opinion. We think
limos, taxis and their customers
should be free, also.
• We miss Elvis!
The Publisher, BusinessBriefs, Inc., assumes no
financial responsibility for ad, news or BizBrief errors,
beyond refunding the cost of the first ad run, if notified
within 10 days of the first printing of the ad error.
