From Page 3 The busts often can have negative affects on the towns in Eagle County and the county government. For example, if a business is ordered not to sell alcohol, the local governments can lose sales tax revenue on the sale of drinks. Customers won’t necessarily know that they cannot order liquor with their meal until after they have arrived at a restaurant that is under an order not to sell alcohol. The state rarely busts establishments for serving other minors, except minors who work for the state! There never seems to be a bust for the sale of alcohol to minors for anyone but the state’s setup person. That is, the state never seems to catch anyone who doesn’t work for the state. This indicates that the system is working fairly well, if the state is unable to find minors purchasing alcohol, except those that work for the state. Is the state violating Colorado liquor laws? Sign posted in bars and restaurants! Is the state in violation by buying? How can the state itself not be guilty of aiding and abetting the sale of alcohol to a minor when they encourage a minor to use sneaky tactics to encourage the sale of alcoholic beverages to that minor? There are 58 pages of liquor laws. The publisher did a cursory review, but could not find where it is legal for enforcement agents to violate the very law that bars and restaurants have to follow. That doesn’t mean that law doesn’t exist. It only means the publisher couldn’t find it. Bartenders have been charged for pouring a drink and then asking for ID prior to serving! “How fair is that?” asked one bartender who was told they were in violation of liquor law, even though they had not yet given the drink to the state’s entrapment person. How do other countries enforce liquor laws? The publisher was advised that in one country, they simply throw the underage person out of the bar and send them on their way. Is it time to change our liquor laws? Enriching the state by using sneaky tactics to entrap unsuspecting owners and employees seems to violate the “I’m from the government and I am here to help” edict. Is it time for the legislature to review archaic laws, or to at least require the enforcement agencies to stop entrapment? Letters - Greedy and maybe ill-advised EC Airport? From Page 9 against a per-trip charge of $4 for a sedan, $6 for an SUV, or $10-14 for a van. Currently, and for the past nine years, these inside transportation booths were run by Colorado Mountain Express (CME) and High Mountain Taxi (HMT). Please note that I understand having a booth for CME, since they are both a shuttle and a limo service, but I have never understood a taxi booth inside the Airport. In fact, I have never seen one before inside an airport. For example, when I travel to Boston, DC, LA, Florida or Las Vegas, I always just walk outside to a taxi queue. The 2014-only numbers, under our analysis, in the bottom of the blue box shows, under the NEW 10% Revenue Proposed RFP by the ECAT, vastly increased fees that these two companies be asked to pay per year. This represents a possible increase of $250K per year to the Eagle County Airport. These increases are outrageous! In the past, HMT paid $6 per trip, now assuming an average trip ticket of $130. This would be $13, or an increase of $7 per trip, or an increase from 4.6% to 10% per trip. In the past, CME paid $10 per trip, now assuming an average trip ticket of $300, this would be $30, or an increase of $20 per trip, or an increase from 3.3% to 10% per trip. Sounds great, right? Well, what if CME decides that a minimum additional $150K per year, or $350-$400K per year, is JUST TOO MUCH, and they don’t bid at all? Instead, they choose to have 5 to 10 GREETERS with clipboards, and call the Eagle County Airport’s bluff? Can the Eagle County Airport afford to LOSE $180-$190K in revenue, on a gamble to make $150K more? What I want to know is why the Eagle County Airport wants to take this gamble, and why they want to risk alienating CME? I suggest the airport look at other potential sources of revenue like: 1. Offering the third booth that has been vacant? 2. Fixing the current Automatic Vehicle Identification System (AVI), a read system that I believe is missing at least 25% to 75% of VALID READS. We believe these two sources could easily generate an additional $100K plus per year, and still allow a vendor like CME, the ability to provide outstanding customer service to our valued guests at the Eagle County Airport.
