Coaches
NORM BERNEY
Head Coach
Norm Berney put together Corban’s first men’s and
women’s cross country teams in 2003. The Warriors
competed in eight events during the season including the
NAIA Region I championships hosted by the University of
British Columbia.
Four years ago, Norm led the women’s program to its first-ever Cascade
Collegiate Conference crown and earned conference Coach of the Year honors in
the process. Along with the program’s first-ever conference title, Norm guided
the Warriors to their highest national ranking ever (16th) in the final NAIA poll
and earned a berth to the 2007 NAIA Championships where the team finished
27th overall.
Starting a cross country program is nothing new for Norm. He has
been involved in the development of two new cross country programs at the
high school level, producing a team district championship and a two-time
individual state champion. Norm was an assistant track and cross country
coach at Clackamas Community College for eight years. As the head coach
in 1984, Clackamas finished second in the state and fourth in the NWACC
championships.
“I believe that everyone can benefit from exercise and athletic
participation,” Norm said. “No one should be discriminated against because
of size, speed or race, and everyone can improve and be an important part of
a team. Corban is a place where athletes and students are encouraged to grow
spiritually and find God’s plan for their lives.”
Norm was an assistant wrestling coach at Clackamas for four years, and
the head wrestling coach from 1975-77, 1978-89. He was named the Oregon
Wrestling Coach of the Year five times, and National Coach of the Year in 1987.
In 1992, he was installed in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
A graduate of then-Eastern Oregon State University in 1968, Norm
received his M.S. from Portland State University in 1974 and has a solid
background in public relations. He has had various speaking engagements in
high schools, companies and community organizations primarily in the area of
education.
Norm and his wife, Nancy, currently reside in Oregon City. They have a
daughter, Marlies, and a son, Thomas, who graduated from Corban in 2007.
KEN SCOTT
Assistant Coach
Ken Scott joins the Warriors for his first season as cross
country assistant coach under Norm Berney.
Ken graduated from Aloha High School in Aloha, Ore.
where he was a four-time state champion in track & field.
He still owns the Oregon H.S. state record for the 300M
intermediate hurdles (36.10), in which he was ranked #1 nationally as a senior.
Ken was honored as an Adidas All-American and Track & Field News Prep All-
American following his senior year. Moving on to Oregon State University, Ken
ran the 400M intermediate hurdles distance for the Beavers, in which he set a
new OSU school record.
“Coaching at Corban has given me the privilege of working with Christian
athletes who show me daily how amazing God is,” said Scott. “Corban provides
an atmosphere for both academic and spiritual growth.”
Prior to joining the Warriors, Ken spent five years as assistant cross
country coach at nearby McNary High School. Ken also served eight years as an
assistant track & field coach at for the Celtics, working with the hurdles and
sprints.
A graduate of Oregon State University in 1982, Ken earned an Engineering
degree from OSU and is currently employed as a chemist for the Oregon
Department of Transportation in Salem. He and his wife, Debbie, reside in
Keizer. They have two daughters, Alyssa & Chelsea, who are both students at
Western Oregon University.
BRADLEY BATES
Assistant Coach
Bradley Bates joins the Warriors for his first season as an
assistant coach for the cross country teams.
Bradley graduated from nearby Stayton High School
before moving onto NCAA Division III member George Fox
University. As a Bruin, Bradley competed three seasons
on the track and advanced to the NCAA National Championships both as a
sophomore and junior. During his sophomore season, Bradley helped lead the
4x400 meter relay team to the national championships before advancing as an
individual in the 800 meter run during his junior campaign.
“I always look to Isaiah 40:31 for strength,” said Bates. “Those words are
something that I will always remember and look to teach the young athletes
at Corban.”
Coaching-wise, Bradley has worked with the Willamette Valley Middle
School track program as well as with the Corban Track & Field team. He is
currently employed as a Special Programs Instructional Assistant at Rosedale
