History
Corban has its roots in Phoenix, Arizona
where, in 1935, it began as a Bible institute.
Relocating to California in 1946, the college
changed its name to Western Baptist Bible
College and operated there until moving to
Oregon in 1969.
In 1955, the College received degreegranting
status from the State of California
Department of Education. In 1959, it
received national accreditation as a Bible
college by the American Association of
Bible Colleges. In 1968, it was regionally
accredited and after moving to Oregon was
accredited by the Northwest Commission
on Colleges and Universities. Over the years,
the College has transitioned from a Bible
college to a comprehensive college offering
programs in biblical studies, the liberal arts,
and professional studies.
Library
In addition to 110,000 titles and 575
current periodical subscriptions on location,
Corban’s membership in the Oregon Private
Academic Library Link (OPALL) provides
access to an additional 450,000 titles and
600,000 volumes. The library and its users
also have access to over 11,000 full-text
journals in electronic format. The library
houses the Prewitt/Allen Archaeological
Museum, a collection of Middle East
artifacts, unique on the West Coast.
In 2005 the name of the college was
changed to Corban in order to enhance
our ability to reach out to all evangelical
churches and at the same time to present
our Baptist heritage in a positive manner.
The name, a biblical word meaning “a gift
dedicated to God,” and motto, “Dedicating
Heart and Mind to God,” reflect the mission
of the college.
Corban College & Graduate School
2008-09 Men’s Basketball Outlook
Warriors have size and ingredients to compete for conference playoffs
Corban’s men’s team was picked to
finish 9 th in this year’s conference pre-season
polling. With four regular starters and three
of the squad’s top four scorers returning
and a nice recruiting crop of size and talent
in-coming, there’s plenty of potential for a
much more positive finish than predicted.
Head Coach Justin Sherwood thinks
his still young Warriors (combined 10
sophomores and freshmen) can climb the
ranks of a highly touted Cascade Collegiate
Conference behind a nucleus of seven
returning players, four of whom started
19 or more games and three of those four
averaged in double figures in scoring.
Added to his veteran corps is an influx
of new talent bringing variety in size and skill.
The Warriors’ roster will boast three players
at 6-feet-8 to go with 6-feet-5, two-time allconference
honorable mention post Wade
Douglas (SR, 6-5, 220, Ontario, Ore). That
gives Corban its best size in several years.
The Warriors will also have the luxury of
versatility on the perimeter, with five veterans
who have considerable game experience at
the guard positions.
“With the added size and depth, we’re
definitely in a better position to match up
with teams compared to the last couple
years,” said Sherwood. “I think the middle
of the pack is very realistic for us because of
the overall strength of our conference and
the fact that we are so young. Some are
saying that this may be the best group of
teams the conference has had.” The Cascade
Conference opens the hoop year with two
teams ranked in the top six nationally, and a
total of four teams among the top 25, and a
fifth team receiving votes for the top 25.
A trio of veterans -- Clay Martin (SO,
6-1, 175, Beaverton, Ore.), Paul Martin (JR,
6-0, 190, Beaverton, Ore.) and Ian Logan
(SO, 6-8, 215, Aloha, Ore.) spent much of
last year as starters, and bring with them
nearly 30 points of combined scoring per
game. Along with Douglas’ 16.6 points per
game, this Warrior foursome helped Corban
average nearly 80 points a contest, fifth-best
in the conference.
The Warriors have improved their size
and presence on the floor with the addition
of transfer Solomon Simmers (SO, 6-8,
240, Bellingham, Wash.) and freshman Erik
Cronrath (FR, 6-8, 195, Battle Ground,
Wash.). Also expected to add athletic
strength to the interior at both ends is rookie
Winston Mueller (FR, 6-4, 195, Klamath
Falls, Ore.).
Corban will have the options of calling
upon experienced backcourt players Bryan
Martin (SO, 6-3, 190, Salem, Ore.), Ben
Potloff (JR, 6-1, 190, Salem, Ore.), and
Nash Keene (SO, 6-0, 185, Aumsville, Ore.).
Sherwood is looking to rookie guards Jake
Mauermann (FR, 6-3, 190, Clackamas,
Ore.), Tyler Turner (FR, 6-2, 165, Junction
City, Ore.), and Ryan Fox (FR, 5-9, 150,
Olympia, Wash.) to strengthen the perimeter
rotations and give the Warriors options on
the perimeter and at the swing positions.
“I’ve liked the way we’ve come together
so far as a team,” said Sherwood. “There’s
a good mix of returners and new guys, and
I think they’ve jelled quickly. We’re a pretty
athletic team, and I think we have some
flexibility with line-ups that we haven’t had
in the past.”
The coach thinks his team can be
effective offensively with more balanced
scoring potential. The key, according to
Sherwood, will be the team’s ability to
improve at the defensive end with effort and
skill.
“One of the important defensive things
we will be playing close attention to is the
field goal shooting percentage of the other
teams,” said Sherwood. “Hopefully we
can be in the top half of the conference in
limiting opponent’s field goal percentage.”
Head Coach
Justin Sherwood returned
to the Corban hardwood as
head coach in 2002 after a
stellar playing career from
1989-93. After inheriting
an inexperienced squad in
his initial campaign, Justin has continued over
the past few seasons to put the Warriors on the
rise with an 87-100 overall mark in six years,
including a record-breaking season in 2004-05.
His team was ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Division
II top-25 at the beginning of the 2004-05
season following a school-record 18-straight
victories to begin the season. Having played a
big part in the tradition of the men’s basketball
program already, it is Justin’s goal to continue
the trend.
“Certainly it is my desire to continue the
success of the coaches before me,” Justin said.
“My goal is for the program to qualify for the
NAIA tournament every year. I want to bring in
students that will excel both academically and
athletically while at Corban and lead successful
Christian lives after graduating.”
Justin began his collegiate coaching career
at George Fox University where he was the
first assistant from 1998-2002. He spent one
season at Gladstone High School coaching the
freshman boys and has worked various camps
and clinics in Oregon and California for over a
decade.
As a collegiate player, he was twice a
National Christian College Athletics Association
(NCCAA) All-American and National Association
of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) all-district
selection. The 6-foot-1 guard made things
happen on both ends of the floor. Justin is
ranked in the top five at Corban in career points
(2,710) and 3-pointers made (464). He is third
in career steals (274) and in the top ten in
rebounds (712).
“My goal for the players I coach at Corban
is that they will enjoy their basketball experience
as much as I enjoyed mine,” Justin said.
Aside from coaching, Justin is also an
assistant professor at Corban in the Business
Department. He met his wife, Jenni, while a
student at Corban and they have a son, Trey,
and daughter, Reese. Justin and his wife enjoy
spending time with their family and playing golf.
Don Hiebenthal
Assistant Coach
Don enters his seventh season
on the coaching staff and is
a familiar face when it comes
to Warrior men’s basketball.
Don, like Coach Sherwood, is
back at his alma mater as a coach following a
standout career at Western Baptist as a player.
Don played basketball at Western Baptist
from 1975-79 and is still among the career
leaders in several categories. He is in the top
five in career points scored (2,460), points per
game (20.3), free throws made (534), assists
(564), and steals (383). Don was a NAIA and
NCCAA All-American, and as a senior led the
nation in scoring, averaging 29.3 points per
game.
Spending 17 years coaching basketball
and volleyball at Liberty Gardens Christian
School, Don understands the opportunity sports
provide. “My philosophy is to strive to get the
full potential out of each individual, not only in
athletics, but in life.”
Don, who works for Campus Care at
Corban, and his wife, Julie, have a daughter,
Trisha, and son, Justin. Don enjoys collecting
old things – coins, cards, toys, furniture – and
anything that has to do with athletics.
Ray Reid
Assistant Coach
Ray returns for his fifth season
with the men’s basketball
coaching staff and will
continue to work side-by-side
with Sherwood and Hiebethal.
Ray arrives at Corban with a wealth of
head coaching experience, which includes
4 years as head men’s soccer coach at
Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and
two seasons as an assistant men’s soccer coach
at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. On
the basketball side of coaching, Ray has four
seasons with the Warriors and two seasons as
an assistant coach at North Salem High School.
“I became a Christian through the
influence of a soccer coach,” Ray said. “I love
small college basketball and the coaches and
players at Corban”
Ray and his wife, Jeanne, have three
children (Marty, Lori, & Jamie). Ray, who is an
attorney at law with the Law Offices of David
Hilgemann, enjoys college basketball, golf,
reading, and is a baseball statistics guru.
2007-08 Season Summary
With high expectations and nearly 62%
of the roster back from the previous season,
sixth-year head coach Justin Sherwood and
Corban were looking to return to the postseason
following a one-year hiatus, as well as
improving its overall win-loss mark from the
2006-07 season.
After opening the ’07-08 campaign
with back-to-back victories, the Warriors ran
into a pair of NCAA opponents that were
opening their respective seasons. Despite
a pair of set backs, Corban rebounded and
pulled out a nail-biting double-overtime
victory over Northern California opponent,
William Jessup.
Following five straight losses,
the Warriors put together the longest
winning streak of the season – four games
– beginning with the final game of the F & W
Fence Basketball Classic. In the midst of the
run, junior Kyle Masten (Salem, Ore.) tied
the school single-game record for three-point
field goal percentage at the Wildhorse Resort
Classic against Montana Tech. The 6-foot
guard went a perfect 8-for-8 from beyond
the arc scoring a career and then-season-high
31 points en route to earning tournament
MVP honors.
Coming off its first regular season
tournament crown in nearly four seasons,
Corban returned to conference action and
mustered five conference victories over
the final two months of the season. The
Warriors missed qualifying for the conference
post-season tournament by a mere two
games, but finished five games ahead of
cellar-dweller Cascade College.
Junior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.)
finished with a team-best 432 points and 149
rebounds en route to earning all-conference
honorable mention honors for the second
straight season. The 6-foot-5 forward also
averaged a team-best 16.6 points and 5.7
rebounds per contest.
Freshman Clay Martin (Beaverton,
Ore.), senior Hannes Gehring (Lake
Oswego, Ore.), and freshman Ian Logan
(Aloha, Ore.) aided Douglas in the point
scoring category, as the trio averaged 10.6,
10.2, and 10.1 points per game respectively.
Meanwhile, Gehring and Logan helped
Douglas on the boards with an average of
4.3 and 4.1 rebounds per contest.
Sherwood concluded his sixth season
at the helm with an overall career mark of
87-100.
