Dave Johnson
Director of Athletics
Dave Johnson, Olympic bronze
medalist at the 1992 Barcelona
Summer Games, begins his
second year as Director of
Athletics at Corban University.
Johnson, a graduate of
Crescent Valley High School in
Corvallis, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology
from Azusa Pacific University in 1986 before
returning to his alma mater to receive his Master’s
Degree in Special Education in 2003.
For more than a decade, Johnson tutored
under former Olympic head coach Terry Franson
and was ranked among the top international
decathletes of his day. Johnson competed in four
straight Olympic Trials (1984, ’88, ’92, & ’96),
qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team twice (1988 &
‘92), and won four U.S. titles (1986, ‘89, ‘90, and
‘92). In the process of capturing the 1992 Olympic
bronze medal, Johnson became the first American
medalist in the decathlon since Bruce Jenner’s gold
medal effort at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
Leading up to the ’92 Summer Games, Johnson
was involved in an eight-month, world-wide
Reebok campaign known as Dan and Dave featuring
Johnson with fellow Olympic-hopeful Dan O’Brien
in a series of popular TV commercials. Johnson’s
inspiring Olympic experience, Christian faith, and
career accomplishments are highlighted in his 1994
autobiography Aim High, published by Zondervan.
“Corban Athletics stands in a pivotal place in
today’s amplified sports culture,” said Johnson. “Our
students strive to reflect Gods design for athletics.”
In his first year as Director of Athletics at
Assistant Athletic Director /
Game & Event Coordinator
Tim Seiber
Corban, Johnson spearheaded the introduction of
the 12 Hours at Corban cross country road race that
happens annually in May to help accommodate
teams preparing for the annual Hood-to-Coast run
and raise money for Warrior Athletics. Johnson
also helped introduce a monthly Fellowship of
Christian Athletes’ (FCA) leadership breakfast for
local high school and college coaches that meets
on Corban’s campus, while also working side-byside
with Corban’s Assistant Director of Athletics
and head coaches in implementing the start of
a Captain’s Counsel that helps prepare Warrior
team captains to lead their fellow teammates
both on and off the field. Johnson also worked in
conjunction with the Warrior Athletic Association
Executive Council in launching the first-ever Warrior
Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in January of
2010 that recognized 15 former athletes, one
former coach, and the architect and builder of the
C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. Along with his work
overseeing all 13 Warrior athletic programs, Johnson
is in the beginning phases of raising money for
the all-new Warrior SportsPlex that will feature a
full-size, eight-lane track & field stadium as well
as a championship-style FieldTurf soccer field.
Included in the all-new Warrior SportsPlex, Johnson
is planning in Phase #2 to relocate the current
Warrior Softball Field and complete the building
of the all-new Warrior Cross Country course that
encompasses a portion of Corban’s newly-acquired
41 acres that surrounds the northeast side of the
campus. The third and final phase of the Warrior
SportsPlex project will feature the building of an
all-new Field House that will include brand-new
athletic offices, an Olympic-style weight room, an
arena for the Warriors’ basketball and volleyball
teams, and indoor practice areas for Corban’s soccer,
softball, baseball, and golf teams. In September,
Johnson worked hand-in-hand with the Cascade
Collegiate Conference commissioner, Corban’s head
golf coach, Creekside management, and Salem-area
representatives that helped bring the 2012 & 2013
NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships to the
Northwest for the first time ever in mid-May.
“Corban holds an environment for success and
the students work hard for what they have, said
Johnson. “The improved facilities will provide more
opportunity for students to serve the Lord.”
For two years prior to coming to Corban,
Johnson worked as Athletics Director at nearby
South Salem High School. During his tenure,
Johnson helped spearhead a $1.3 million facility
renovation campaign that included a new 70,000
square-foot synthetic FieldTurf surface and
the christening of the new Guido Caldarazzo
Stadium used for all major Saxon football and
soccer events. Johnson was also instrumental in a
project updating scoreboards at South Salem High
School athletic venues. At South, Johnson was
responsible for the administration and leadership
of 17 sports programs, which included oversight
of athletics schedules, staff, eligibility standards
and event management. “The diverse population
of students at South Salem High took pride in the
improvements and was called to take ownership
of its care.” Johnson said. “The environment was
energized after the renovations!”
Johnson currently resides in Salem with his
wife, Sheri, and four children (Alexandra, Makenzie,
Gabriel, and Eliason), while also working as an
Olympic & motivational speaker for clients such as
Reebok, IBM, VISA, and Billy Graham. Johnson and
his family attend Morning Star Community Church
in South Salem.
integral part of the total educational program of the
institution.
As the country=s oldest collegiate sports governing body, the NAIA has been
a leader in addressing important issues such as racial integration, women=s
Coaches
justin sherwood
Head Coach
Justin Sherwood returned to the Corban hardwood as head
coach in 2002 after a stellar playing career from 1989-
93. After inheriting an inexperienced squad in his initial
campaign, Justin has taken the Warriors to new heights
compiling an overall win-loss record of 106-140 in eight
years that included a record-breaking season in 2004-05. His team was ranked
No. 1 in the NAIA Division II top-25 at the beginning of the 2004-05 season
following a school-record 18-straight victories to begin the season. Having
played a big part in the tradition of the men’s basketball program already, it is
Justin’s goal to continue the trend.
“Certainly it is my desire to continue the success of the coaches
before me,” Justin said. “My goal is for the program to qualify for the NAIA
tournament every year. I want to bring in students that will excel both
academically and athletically while at Corban and lead successful Christian
lives after graduating.”
Justin began his collegiate coaching career at George Fox University
where he was the first assistant from 1998-2002. He spent one season at
Gladstone High School coaching the freshman boys and has worked various
camps and clinics in Oregon and California for over a decade.
As a collegiate player, he was twice a National Christian College Athletics
Association (NCCAA) All-American and National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA) all-district selection. The 6-foot-1 guard made things happen
on both ends of the floor. Justin is ranked in the top five at Corban in career
points (2,710) and 3-pointers made (464). He is third in career steals (274) and
in the top ten in rebounds (712).
“My goal for the players I coach at Corban is that they will enjoy their
basketball experience as much as I enjoyed mine,” Justin said.
Aside from coaching, Justin is also an assistant professor at Corban in the
Business Department. He met his wife, Jenni, while a student at Corban and
they have a son, Trey, and daughter, Reese. Justin and his wife enjoy spending
time with their family and playing golf.
Don Hiebenthal
Assistant Coach
Don Hiebenthal enters his ninth season on the coaching
staff and is a familiar face when it comes to Warrior men’s
basketball. Don, like Coach Sherwood, is back at his alma
mater as a coach following a standout career at Western
Baptist as a player.
Don played basketball at Western Baptist from 1975-79 and is still among
the career leaders in several categories. He is in the top five in career points
scored (2,460), points per game (20.3), free throws made (534), assists (564),
and steals (383). Don was a NAIA and NCCAA All-American, and as a senior led
the nation in scoring, averaging 29.3 points per game.
Spending 17 years coaching basketball and volleyball at Liberty Gardens
Christian School, Don understands the opportunity sports provide. “My
philosophy is to strive to get the full potential out of each individual, not only
in athletics, but in life.”
Don, who works for Campus Care at Corban, and his wife, Julie, have
a daughter, Trisha, and son, Justin. Don enjoys collecting old things – coins,
cards, toys, furniture – and anything that has to do with athletics.
Ray Reid
Assistant Coach
Ray Reid returns for his seventh season with the men’s
basketball coaching staff and will continue to work side-byside
with Sherwood and Hiebethal.
Ray arrives at Corban with a wealth of head coaching
experience, which includes 4 years as head men’s soccer
coach at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and two seasons as an
assistant men’s soccer coach at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. On the
basketball side of coaching, Ray has five seasons with the Warriors and two
seasons as an assistant coach at North Salem High School.
“I became a Christian through the influence of a soccer coach,” Ray said.
“I love small college basketball and the coaches and players at Corban”
Ray and his wife, Jeanne, have three children (Marty, Lori, & Jamie). Ray,
who is an attorney at law with the Law Offices of David Hilgemann, enjoys
college basketball, golf, reading, and is a baseball statistics guru.
Marty Reid
Assistant Coach
Marty Reid will begin his first season with the men’s
basketball coaching staff and will continue to work side-byside
with Sherwood, Hiebethal, and his dad, Ray.
Marty recently coached at Kennedy High School for
the past two years as the varsity boys’ basketball coach,
while also spending a few years prior at nearby Stayton High School helping
with the junior varsity program.
Marty will return to his alma mater after playing four seasons for the
Warriors from 1999-2003. Marty is one of 24 Warriors to score 1,000-or-more
points in a career, as the former point guard ranks 12th all-time in scoring
history with 1,654 points. Marty helped lead then-Western Baptist to a
Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament championship in 2002, while also
helping guide the Warriors to both the National Christian College Athletic
Association (NCCAA) and NAIA Division II national tournaments. Marty ranks
in the Top 10 all-time in assists (3rd – 632), three-point field goals made (6th
– 210), three-point field goals attempted (6th – 586), free throws made (8th
– 338), free throws attempted (8th – 425), and free throw percentage (10th –
.795).
Marty currently resides with his wife, Jenny, in Salem and will continue
his full-time work as a teacher at North Salem High School, while also working
part-time at Santiam Golf Course in Stayton.
2009-10 Season Summary
Eighth-year head coach Justin Sherwood went into the 2009-10 season
with hopes of returning to the playoffs and improving on last season’s record.
The Warriors would open the season with a four-game winning streak,
as Corban out-scored its opponents 404-372 and averaged a NAIA-best 101.0
points per game over that stretch. Just as quickly as the highs came, the lows
followed very closely behind as the Warriors went into a lull that included
four losses in their next six games with wins coming over conference rival
Northwest Christian and NCAA Division III member George Fox.
Following their win over George Fox in mid-December, the Warriors
suffered a season-high losing streak of 15 games and did not earn a victory for
nearly two months. In the final month of the season, Corban would register a
pair of upsets against nationally-ranked teams thanks to back-to-back wins of
Warner Pacific and Eastern Oregon.
Senior Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) finished with a team-best 507 points
and an average of 17.5 points per contest. Scoring-wise, Potloff was aided by
junior Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.), who averaged 15.0 points and a team-high 6.3
rebounds per game. The Warriors had four players that averaged more than 10
points per contest, as Potloff, Logan, sophomore Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground,
Wash.), and junior Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) combined to average 55.2
points per game.
Both Potloff and Logan were honored by the Cascade Collegiate
Conference office as All-CCC honorable mention, while Logan and Keene
earned both NAIA and conference academic honors. Following the conclusion
of his junior season, Logan was also named as the recipient of the prestigious
Emil S. Liston Award for his work both on the court and in the classroom.
Sherwood concluded his eighth season at the helm of the Warriors and
now has an overall career mark of 106-140. The former Warrior player joined
former Western Baptist coaches Tim Hills and Tim Collins last season as only
the third coach in program history to register 100-or-more victories during their
careers.
