2008 Cross Country Outlook
There’s a lot to be excited about in the
Corban cross country program heading into
the 2008 campaign. The Warrior women
received its highest national pre-season
ranking ever at No. 27 among all NAIA
schools, while the men’s team features the
most quality senior experience the program
has had at any time in its six-year history.
Couple this known quantity of talent with
an exciting rookie class and the Warriors are
poised to press the best teams in the Cascade
Collegiate Conference.
“The runners’ attitudes are fantastic,”
said sixth-year head coach Norm Berney.
“Both teams are really committed to having
great seasons. Depth-wise, we are as good
as we’ve ever been, and we have key runners
on both the men’s and women’s teams that
are freshmen. It’s hard to know for sure until
we hit the competition, but we are excited
about the potential we have in the program
this season.”
Unlike a year ago, the ‘08 Corban men’s
squad will have the strength and luxury of
three long-time capable veterans turned
seniors leading the attack. Fourth-year
lettermen Ben Snell (SR, 5-6, Spray, Ore.),
Jason Bernard (SR, 5-11, Salem, Ore.), and
Brian Beeson (SR, 6-2, Soldotna, Alaska) are
coming off strong junior years, and should
give the Warriors a formidable trio of point
scorers. Snell returns as the team’s 2007
MVP; Bernard has competed in every meet
since his freshmen year and has been among
the top five finishers three consecutive
seasons, and Beeson was the leading Corban
finisher at the NAIA Region I Championships
a year ago.
“They’re going to be the key as to
whether we can be in that top two or
three in the conference, and whether we’re
going to have a shot at the nationals,” said
Berney. “It’s great to have these seniors.
They’re showing the kind of attitude and
hard work that can make the difference in
accomplishing these goals.”
Berney expects experienced runners like
Jeffrey Schloemer (JR, 6-4, Mt. Vernon,
Wash.), Ben Search (SO, 6-1, Battleground,
Wash.), Kevin Cook (SO, 5-11, Ashland,
Ore.), Jason Hardrath (SO, 5-10, Baker City,
Ore.) and Beau St. Peter (SO, 6-1, Salem,
Ore.) to make the men stronger in scoring
overall as a team.
New talent like Caleb Goins (FR,
5-6, Scio, Ore.), Josh Baker (FR, 5-10,
Anchorage, Alaska), Cory Shields (FR, 5-11,
Jefferson, Ore.) and Kevin Coriano (FR, 5-
11, Anchorage, Alaska) give Corban its best
depth of young potential in years.
“The nice thing is we now have runners
with quality experience out of high school
who have been successful there, and that
should help them transition to collegiate
competition much faster,” said Berney.
Ranked 27 th in the nation, the Corban
women will rely on the leadership of twotime
all-conference performer Carli Moller
(JR, 5-6, Vancouver, Wash.), who has two
years of national championship competition
experience. Moller was the Warriors’ No.
2 runner in 2007, behind all-region runner
Danielle Jordan, and finished 5th in the
conference championship a year ago.
A pair of hard-running sophomores
Karissa Griggs (SO, 5-3, Athena, Ore.) and
Ali Ghavami (SO, 5-5, Keizer, Ore.) will
help set the standard of dedication and drive
that could help the scoring potential of the
Warrior women as a team.
Newcomers Jennifer Hague (FR, 5-4,
Florence, Ore.) and Amy Renfro (FR, 5-3,
Albany, Ore.) bring great promise to the
program, both entering with the fastest high
school cross country times freshmen female
competitors have had entering Corban.
Berney has also been pleasantly surprised by
the showing of rookies Becca Zanon (FR, 5-
5, Salem, Ore.) and Courtney Welling (FR,
5-6, Springfield, Ore.). Jocelyn Smith (FR,
5-2, Yakima, Wash.) and Alethea Strauser
(FR, 5-4, Salem, Ore.) give Corban one of
its biggest and most promising freshmen
running classes ever.
Coach and Player Bios
Norm Berney
Head Coach
Norm Berney put
together Corban’s first
men’s and women’s
cross country teams in
2003. The Warriors
competed in eight
events during the
season including the NAIA Region I
championships hosted by the University of
British Columbia.
Two years ago, Norm led the women’s
program to its first-ever Cascade Collegiate
Conference crown and earned conference
Coach of the Year honors in the process.
Along with the program’s first-ever
conference title, Norm guided the Warriors
to their highest national ranking ever (16th)
in the final NAIA poll and earned a berth to
the 2007 NAIA Championships where the
team finished 27th overall.
Starting a cross country program
is nothing new for Norm. He has been
involved in the development of two
new cross country programs at the high
school level, producing a team district
championship and a two-time individual
state champion. Norm was an assistant
track and cross country coach at Clackamas
Community College for eight years. As the
head coach in 1984, Clackamas finished
second in the state and fourth in the
NWACC championships.
“I believe that everyone can benefit
from exercise and athletic participation,”
Norm said. “No one should be
discriminated against because of size, speed
or race, and everyone can improve and be
an important part of a team. Corban is
a place where athletes and students are
encouraged to grow spiritually and find
God’s plan for their lives.”
Norm was an assistant wrestling coach
at Clackamas for four years, and the head
wrestling coach from 1975-77, 1978-
89. He was named the Oregon Wrestling
Coach of the Year five times, and National
Coach of the Year in 1987. In 1992, he
was installed in the National Wrestling Hall
of Fame.
A graduate of Eastern Oregon State
University in 1968, Norm received his M.S.
from Portland State University in 1974 and
has a solid background in public relations.
He has had various speaking engagements
in high schools, companies and community
organizations primarily in the area of
education.
Norm and his wife, Nancy, currently
reside in Oregon City. They have a
daughter, Marlies, and a son, Thomas, who
graduated from Corban in 2007.
Brent Fahsholz
Assistant Coach
Brent Fahsholz moves
from the course to the
coaching staff, as he
moves into his second
season on the Warriors’
coaching staff along
side head coach Norm
Berney. Brent will be handling the training
of the runners, as well as running side-byside
the student-athletes during workouts.
In 2006, Brent concluded his career
as a Warrior by winning two-out-of-three
races that he competed in. Brent brought
home the first-ever Corban/Warner Pacific
Invitational individual title thanks to a racebest
time of 26:33.41. Two races earlier,
Brent won the season-opening race at
Pacific University in a time of 28:16.37. As a
senior, Brent was named the Warriors’ Most
Improved Runner and Mighty Warrior.
Brent is currently working for
ARAMARK as the coffee shop manager on
campus.
2007 Season Summary
After an amazing season on the women’s
side and with nearly 50% of each team’s
roster returning from the previous season,
fifth-year head coach Norm Berney had high
expectations for Corban’s cross country teams.
Out of the gates, neither team
disappointed its head coach, as the women’s
team opened the season with back-to-back
second place finishes at the season-opening
Lewis & Clark Invitational and the Pinetree
Invitational. Senior Danielle Jordan led the
women’s charge capturing a fourth place finish
in British Columbia. On the men’s side, the
Warriors opened the season finishing fourth at
the Lewis & Clark Invitational before capturing
a runner-up finish at the Pinetree Invite.
Closing out the opening month of the
season, both teams ran at the annual Charles
University. The women’s team turned in its
highest finish ever at the event thanks to a 12 th
place showing, while the men’s team finished
17 th overall in a field of 27 teams.
As the calendar turned to the month of
Supporting Corban Athletics
Warrior student-athletes work hard for their accomplishments both in the
classroom and playing arena. They deserve as much support as possible. A great
way to support them is through membership in a sport booster club of the Warrior
Athletic Association (WAA).
Helping student-athletes accomplish the mission of Corban and the Department
of Athletics is our objective. Corban athletes and teams are successful and
accomplished today because of the unselfish contributions and efforts of WAA
members. WAA clubs support all of Corban’s 200+ student-athletes in 13 different
programs.
The WAA serves as the umbrella organization for individual team booster
clubs. Membership funds and contributions assist in providing monies for sports
promotion, recruiting, Christian ministry projects, equipment, travel, facility
development and the general operational support of Corban’s collegiate programs.
