2010 Baseball Outlook
Warriors expect a load of fresh talent
and key returners to fuel prospects in
NAIA West Group
The coming of the 2010 spring season brings a
lot of “new” to the Corban baseball program
and fourth-year head coach Nate Mayben. The
new, referring to personnel, amounts to 25
changes overall in the Warriors roster, as 11
players exited, while 11 freshmen and three
transfers replenish the ranks.
Corban graduated key personnel on the
mound, losing top starters Jason Braun and
Derek Stokes, plus veteran leadership in Russ
Johnston and Craig Spicer, but Mayben sees
plenty of fresh talent in the 2010 edition of
Warrior baseball.
Mayben will draw immediately on the
college experience and versatility of talented
transfers like Steven Candelaria (JR, 6-2,
215, Farmington, N.M.), Jonathan Ramirez
(SO, 5-11, 185, New Britain, Conn.), and
Tyler Lake (JR, 5-9, 180, Medford, Ore.), all
of whom play multiple positions and wield
capable bats.
Third-year veterans returning and
counted on for big contributions and
leadership in the outfield include Josh
Warner (SR, 6-2, 185, Independence, Ore.),
Nate Hiebert (JR, 5-11, 170, Lebanon, Ore.),
Kyle Taylor, (JR, 6-0, 205, Clackamas, Ore.)
and Taylor Wyatt (JR, 6-1, 180, Dallas, Ore.).
Second-year player Steven Blum will see
outfield time, and will also be counted on as a
designated hitter with his power capability.
Hiebert will also be on the mound and
will join veteran middle infielder Trevor
Winsor (JR, 6-0, 185, Troutdale, Ore.) in
providing important relief and spot starting
roles throughout the year for Corban’s
pitching staff. Returner Luke Balbas (JR,
6-0, 200, Boise, Idaho) will add depth and
versatility in the infield and at the plate for
Corban.
Rookies Jacob Kopra (FR, 6-4, 205,
Gresham, Ore.), Craig Baker (FR, 6-2, 195,
Meridian, Idaho) and Jake Balbas (FR, 6-0,
185, Meridian, Idaho) will give the Warriors
young, lively arms to fill starting roles on the
pitching staff, while veterans Kyle Lamson,
(JR, 6-0, 175, Medford, Ore.), Chris Trammell
(JR, 6-2, 155, Salem, Ore.), Quinn Macnab
(SO, 6-4, 215, The Dalles, Ore.), Tyler
Doornink (SO, 6-0, 190, Yakima, Wash.) and
Mike McKay (SO, 6-0, 175, Almira, Wash.)
will season the bullpen.
Freshmen expected to contribute
immediately will be catcher Marc Labarthe
(FR, 5-9, 175, Salem, Ore.) outfielder Kyle
Kunkel (FR, 5-11, 175, Bremerton, Wash.),
and first baseman Kris Bos (FR, 5-9, 185,
Jerome, Idaho). Other freshmen seeking
mound time are Caleb Virtue (FR, 5-9, 175,
Vancouver, Wash.) and David Hull (FR, 6-1,
200, Kelso, Wash.).
Giving veteran signal calling experience
behind the plate is Mitch Riddle (SR, 5-9,
185, Pullman, Wash.), while rookie Spenser
Beeson (FR, 5-10, 180) will tutor behind
experienced catchers like Riddle and Lake.
Freshmen Alex Bost (FR, 6-2, 180, San
Jose, Calif.) and Jonathan Outland (FR, 5-11,
175, Salem, Ore.) hope to see time on the left
side of the infield for the Warriors.
2010 Baseball Media Guide
2009 Season Summary
Under the tutelage of third-year head coach
Nate Mayben, Corban College recorded double
digits in the win column for the eleventh straight
year and registered 11 victories that included nine
in NAIA West play.
The Warriors began the season with a pair
of wins against fellow conference members The
College of Idaho and Concordia at the seasonopening
Regence BlueSheild of Idaho tournament
in Lewiston.
Corban would close out the opening month
of the season with nine straight losses before
sweeping fellow NAIA West Group member
Bethany in a four-game series by a combined 26
runs. Two weekends later, the Warriors would take
three-out-of-four games from fellow conference
member Concordia before embarking on a seasonlong
12-game losing streak.
The Warriors would snap the streak with a
1-0 victory over Concordia, as senior pitcher Jason
Braun (Dallas, Ore.) would dual with the Cavaliers’
Ben Rue in a pair of complete game performances.
After another nine-game losing streak, Corban
would close out the season with a split against
The College of Idaho thanks to a complete game
performance from sophomore Trevor Winsor
(Gresham, Ore.).
Seniors Craig Spicer (Vancouver, Wash.) and
Russ Johnston (Independence, Ore.) were named
to the All-Cascade Collegiate Conference Team,
as Spicer led the team in nine statistical categories
that included batting average (.355), games played
(46), at-bats (166), runs scored (26), hits (59),
doubles (10), total bases (83), slugging percentage
(.500), and on-base percentage (.417). Meanwhile,
Johnston returned after a six-year layoff to pursue
work within the field of ministry and led the team in
home runs with seven and runs batted in with 27.
On the mound, Braun set the program’s
single-season mark for Earned Run Average (ERA)
with a team-low 3.46. The right-hander also led
the team in six other statistical categories, including
games started (11), shutouts (1), saves (2), innings
pitched (78.0), strikeouts (61), and opponent’s
batting average (.254). Following his illustrious
collegiate career, Braun became the fourth player in
Warrior baseball history to be taken in the annual
MLB First-Year Player Draft going in the 29 th round
(869 th overall) to the Cincinnati Reds.
After three seasons at the helm of the
Warriors, Mayben has accrued an overall record of
35-99-1 and moved into second all-time in program
history for wins as a head coach.
Supporting Corban Athletics
Warriors

2010 Baseball Media Guide
Warrior student-athletes work hard for their accomplishments both
in the classroom and playing arena. They deserve as much support
as possible. A great way to support them is through membership in
a sport booster club of the Warrior Athletic Association (WAA).
Helping student-athletes accomplish the mission of Corban and
the Department of Athletics is our objective. Corban athletes
and teams are successful and accomplished today because of
the unselfish contributions and efforts of WAA members. WAA
clubs support all of Corban’s 200+ student-athletes in 13 different
programs.
The WAA serves as the umbrella organization for individual team
booster clubs. Membership funds and contributions assist in
providing monies for sports promotion, recruiting, Christian ministry
projects, equipment, travel, facility development and the general
operational support of Corban’s collegiate programs.
