Coaches
MARTY ZIESEMER
Head Coach
In fourteen seasons directing the Corban women’s soccer
program, Marty Ziesemer has taken the team to a level
of national recognition. During its time, Marty has helped
lead the Warriors to the NAIA regional tournament in
seven of eight seasons that included a runner-up finish in
2002. Marty and the Warriors have regularly received votes in the NAIA top-25
poll over the past few years, including a program-best No. 27-ranking in the
2002 preseason poll. His teams have had three second-place finishes at the
National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) championships, while
capturing two Cascade Collegiate Conference titles in 1996 and 1999. Marty
was named the NCCAA Coach of the Year twice (2000 & 2002), while earning
conference Coach of the Year honors in 1998 & 2009.
Marty is excited about where the program has come, on and off the field.
“These girls really represent what Corban is about — having students go into
the world and make a difference for Jesus Christ.”
The 1991 graduate of Corban took over in 1996, after the new program had
notched just two victories in its first three years of existence. Since taking the
reins, Marty has posted a 156-135-15 career coaching record that included a
league record of 109-37-6 in 14 seasons after being a four-year letterman and
captain of the men’s soccer team during his playing days. Marty’s 2002 squad
notched a program-best 19-8 record and advanced to the championship of the
NAIA Region I tournament for the first time.
Through athletics and as the Vice President for Enrollment Management at
the university, Marty sees first hand the opportunity Corban offers. “Corban’s
influence can take students out of their comfort zones and bring them to grow
and be challenged in a great way.”
Away from work at Corban, Marty enjoys reading. He and his wife, Cindy, reside
in Salem with their two children – Shannon and Daniel. Marty and his family
currently attend Emmanuel Bible Church.
and handed out four assists, while registering 26 points.
Kari graduated from Corban in 2006 with a degree in Human Performance and
Sport Fitness. She currently manages the on-campus townhouses at Corban
in addition to teaching fitness classes for the college. She is married to former
Warrior baseball player, Brett Timmerman, and the couple has a son, Wyatt.
AARON FRANKLIN
Assistant Coach
Aaron Franklin begins his first season as an assistant coach
after four seasons as part of the Warriors’ men’s soccer
program.
Aaron played on the men’s soccer team at Corban from
2006-09, as he appeared between the pipes for the Warriors in 60 games
making 55 starts. Aaron manned the Warriors’ goal for 5,380-plus minutes
during his four-year career allowing 100 goals and registering 366 saves.
Aaron’s career 1.67 Goals Against Average (GAA) ranks second all-time in
program history, while his 13 career shutouts is second all-time as well.
Aaron graduated from Corban in 2009 with a degree in Elementary Education.
He is currently working towards his Master’s Degree in Education. He and his
wife, Kayla, reside in Turner.
BENNY FLORES
Associate Head Coach
Benny Flores returns for his fifth season as part of the
women’s soccer coaching staff and was promoted in
July to Associate Head Coach. Benny played soccer for
three seasons (1990-92) at Corban and is currently fourth
in men’s program history with 96 career points having
tallied 39 goals and 18 assists. He was twice named the Warriors’ team most
valuable player.
Benny graduated from Corban in 1994 and majored in Youth Ministry. He
returned to Salem four years ago and is currently working as a correctional
officer at Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility.
His wife, Barbara, also attended Corban and played soccer during the first two
years the women’s program was offered in 1993-94. Benny loves to spend time
with kids and has three of his own – Benny Jr., Julia, and Izabella.
2009 Season Summary
Entering his fourteenth season at the helm of the Warriors, head coach
Marty Ziesemer held high expectations for this senior-laden roster following
a sixth place finish in the final regular season conference standings and
back-to-back appearances in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament
semifinals.
Having added four freshmen to an experienced core of returners that
included seven seniors, Ziesemer anticipated this could be the year for the
Warriors to finally capture the conference crown and earn a spot in the NAIA
national tournament.
Corban kicked off the 2009 season in Idaho with a 1-1 tie against nonconference
rival Northwest Nazarene before compiling a 2-2 record on the
road against non-conference competition. Then the Warriors posted a 1-1-1
record while hosting the first-annual Corban Classic before falling to then NAIA
#10-ranked Simon Fraser in their final non-conference tilt.
After dropping their CCC opener to then NAIA #5-ranked Concordia by
a score of 5-0, the Warriors caught fire, reeling off a seven-game unbeaten
streak in conference play. During their run, Corban piled up straight six victories
including three shutouts while outscoring the competition 21-7 over those
seven games. Despite cooling off against Oregon Tech in a 2-1 conference
season-ending loss, the Warriors clinched the #3 playoff seed, having finished
6-2-1 in CCC action.
Appearing in their third-straight CCC semifinals, the Warriors faced off
with conference rival Concordia with a trip to the conference tournament
finals on the line. Unfortunately, the eventual national semi-finalist Cavaliers
brought an end to Corban’s season, 7-0.
Sophomore Amanda Mendenhall and freshman Emily Tsugawa led
the Warriors’ attack, tallying 16 and 15 points respectively, while junior Katie
Hanson added 13 points. Mendenhall capped a spectacular season in capturing
NAIA All-American Honorable Mention honors. Additionally, Hanson and
Mendenhall were named to the All-Cascade Collegiate Conference 1 st team.
Tsugawa earned 2 nd team all-conference honors along with junior defender
Genessa Neeser, while seniors Kacie Emerick and Jessica Matthews received
all-conference honorable mention recognition.
In goal for the Warriors, senior Jennifer Bassett snagged a team-leading
85 saves while giving up 38 goals in 1,770 minutes between the pipes.
Bassett registered five shutouts on the season, while also earning conference
Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week of October 19 th .
Ziesemer reached a special milestone during the season, becoming the
16 th coach in NAIA history to record 150 career wins when Corban defeated
Rocky Mountain, 2-1, during the Corban Classic. Also voted 2009 Cascade
Collegiate Conference Co-Coach of the Year, Ziesemer has compiled a 156-135-
15 overall record over fourteen seasons at the helm for the Warriors.
