Our Mission
To educate Christians who will make a
difference in the world for Jesus Christ.
Matthew 28:19-20
History
Corban College has its roots in Phoenix,
Arizona where, in 1935, it began as a Bible
institute. Relocating to California in 1946,
the college changed its name to Western
Baptist Bible College and operated there
until moving to Oregon in 1969.
In 1955, the College received degreegranting
status from the State of California
Department of Education. In 1959, it
received national accreditation as a Bible
college by the American Association of
Bible Colleges. In 1968, it was regionally
accredited and after moving to Oregon was
accredited by the Northwest Commission
on Colleges and Universities. Over the years,
the College has gone from a Bible college to
a comprehensive college offering programs
in biblical studies, the liberal arts, and
professional studies.
In 2005 the name of the college was
changed to Corban in order to enhance
our ability to reach out to all evangelical
churches and at the same time to present
our Baptist heritage in a positive manner.
The name, a biblical word meaning “a gift
dedicated to God,” and motto, “Dedicating
Heart and Mind to God,” reflect the mission
of the college.
Library
In addition to 110,000 titles and 575 current
periodical subscriptions on location, Corban’s
membership in the Oregon Private Academic
Library Link (OPALL) provides access to
an additional 500,000 titles and 750,000
volumes. The library and its users also have
access to over 11,000 full-text journals in
electronic format. The library houses the
Prewitt/Allen Archaeological Museum, a
collection of Middle East artifacts, unique on
the West Coast.
Dave Johnson, Director Of Athletics
503-589-8119
djohnson@corban.edu
Dave Johnson, a former Olympic bronze medalist at the 1992
Barcelona Summer Games, begins his first year as Director of Athletics at
Corban College.
Prior to coming to Corban, Johnson spent the past two years
as Athletics Director at nearby South Salem High School. During his
tenure, Johnson helped spearhead a $1.3 million facility renovation campaign that included
a new 70,000 square-foot synthetic FieldTurf surface and the christening of the new Giedo
Caldarazzo Stadium used for all major Saxon football and soccer events. Johnson was also
instrumental in a project updating scoreboards at South Salem High School athletic venues.
At South, Johnson was responsible for the administration and leadership of 17 sports
programs, which included oversight of athletics schedules, staff, eligibility standards and event
management.
“A goal of mine over the past few years has been to join the Corban family,” said
Johnson. “I feel that the Christian College atmosphere is a great asset to a job-setting and that
Corban is the place where God is calling me to be at this time. With the new direction that Dr.
Bale is taking the athletic department, I feel that I can come in and help the process as well as
move Warrior Athletics towards the future.”
Prior to coming to South, Johnson served two years as Director of Athletics and Vice
Principal at Jefferson High School. In addition to administrative duties at Jefferson, Johnson
worked with other schools and the Oregon School Activities Association to create a new
PacWest Conference when the OSAA re-classified competitive divisions in 2006.
Johnson, a graduate of Cresent Valley High School in Corvallis, earned a Bachelor’s
Degree in Psychology from Azusa Pacific University in 1986 before returning to his alma
mater to receive his Master’s Degree in Special Education in 2003. As a member of APU’s
nationally-known track & field program, Johnson tutored under former Olympic head coach
Terry Franson. During that time and for more than a decade, Johnson ranked among the top
international decathletes of his day, competing in four straight Olympic Trials (1984, ’88, ’92,
& ’96), while qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team twice, first in 1988, and then again in 1992.
While training for the 1992 Olympic, Johnson suffered a broken foot. Resisting medical advice
urging him to discontinue, Johnson pressed on to capture the bronze medal at the Barcelona
Olympics and became the first American medalist in the decathlon since Bruce Jenner’s gold
medal effort at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Johnson’s inspiring Olympic experience and
Christian faith are highlighted in the 1994 autobiography Aim High, published by Zondervan.
Leading up to the ’92 Summer Games, Johnson was involved in an eight-month, worldwide
Reebok campaign known as Dan and Dave featuring Johnson with fellow Olympichopeful
Dan O’Brien in a series of popular TV commercials. Reebok’s goal was to promote
a “Clash of the Titans” theme in Barcelona, as both Oregonians battled for the gold medal
and coveted title of “World’s Greatest Athlete.” Unfortunately, O’Brien failed to qualify at the
Olympic Trials, forcing Reebok to re-work its campaign with the focus on Johnson’s pursuit of
Olympic gold.
“The goals were high for me during the summer of ’92,” commented Johnson. “Despite
competing on a broken foot, I knew that God had a vision for my future. Since then, I have
seen a lot of things happen in my life that has led up to this point and I feel that the Lord has
molded everything in my life for a reason. God brought me to Corban for a reason and I am
looking forward to the challenge.”
Johnson, who will assume duties at Corban on July 1st, currently resides in Salem with his
wife, Sheri, and four children (Alexandra, Makenzie, Gabriel, and Eliason), while also working
as an Olympic & motivational speaker for clients such as Reebok, IBM, VISA, and Billy Graham.
Johnson and his family attend Morning Star Community Church in South Salem.
Warriors
2009 Men’s Soccer Media Guide
2009 Men’s Soccer Outlook
With new talent and veterans, Warriors seek to re-establish winning ways.
Corban men’s soccer squad is on a mission to re-establish its strength and viability in the NAIA
ranks, as fourth-year head coach Dave and team seek to improve on last season’s six wins,
while boosting the Warriors above .500.
Irby points to experience, leadership and overall skill level as reasons for anticipating a
positive change in Warrior soccer prospects.
“This year’s team will be stronger than the previous two season’s because we have six
seniors, several quality transfers and some dynamic freshmen,” said Irby. With that mix, we’ll
feature good skills and potential on the attack, while having a veteran defense and solid goal
keeping to protect us.”
On the Defense
Proven ironmen on the Warrior defense are a trio of seniors: keeper Aaron Franklin (SR, 5-10,
170, Red Bluff, Calif.), and rugged defenders Mark Mendenhall (SR, 6-3, 193, Windsor,
Calif.) and Kaleb Herring (SR, 6-1, 190, Waco, Texas).
Also strengthening the backfield is returner Nolan Dempster (SO, 6-0, 177, Hillsboro,
Ore.), and transfers Devin Chaney (SO, 6-0, 170, Helena, Mont.) and Jon Taylor (SO, 5-9,
155, Salem, Ore.).
Rookies who will counted on in key back-up roles are Jacob Niska (FR, 5-7, 135,
Portland, Ore.) and Paul Miller (FR, 5-8, 148, Pittsburg, Calif.).
Ranging Across the Midfield
Corban has a lot of versatility and experience in the midfield, with a pair of seniors Jared Rust
(SR, 6-0, 185, Palo Cedro, Calif.) and transfer Chris Smerke (SR, 5-9, 155, Las Vegas, Nev.)
leading the charge. New promising midfield talent comes to the Warriors in transfer Louis-
Claude Nguea-Njoh (SO, 6-0, 154, Douala, Cameron) and a pair of freshmen Bruno Batista
(FR, 5-11, 176, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Jin-Hoon Brooks (FR, 5-6, 135, Dallas, Ore.).
Chaney, Herring, Dempster and Taylor can all swing to the mid area, giving the Warriors
plenty of adept field coverage.
Attacking Upfront
Spearheading a more potent scoring attack in the front will be third-year veteran Ayouba
Moussa (JR, 6-3, 184, Niger, Africa), Travis Wells (JR, 5-11, 160, Springfield, Ore.),
newcomer T.J. Bacewich (FR, 5-11, 145, Sherwood, Ore.), as well as Rust and Batista.
Freshman striker Peter Martin (FR, 6-0, 170, Salem, Ore.) is counted on for valuable support
on the attack for Corban.
his fourth year as head
coach of the Warriors
after guiding Corban
to the NAIA Region I
Tournament for the first
time in eight seasons in
2006.
Two seasons ago, Dave led Corban to
a berth in the NAIA Region I Tournament, as
the Warriors won their final three games of
the regular season by a combined 15 goals
(17-2) en route to meeting fellow conference
member Concordia in the opening round of
the post-season tournament.
Prior to his collegiate coaching return,
Dave spent six seasons (1999-2005) as head
boys’ varsity coach at Blanchet Catholic High
School in Salem, where he led the Cavaliers to
back-to-back league co-championships in 2003
and 2004. Dave was named Tri-Rivers League
Coach of the Year, as Blanchet advanced to
the state quarterfinals in 2004. The Cavaliers
earned the league Sportsmanship Award for
three straight seasons with Dave at the helm.
Dave has also served as head coach of
the Premier Developmental League’s (PDL)
Cascade Surge from 1997-2000 before
transitioning into management with the team
in 1999. Under Dave, Cascade advanced to
the PDL Western Conference Playoffs in 1997.
As president, the Surge advanced to the
playoffs four straight seasons, while winning
back-to-back Northwest Division Titles. The
team won the league’s Fair Play award in 2003
Before moving to the Northwest, Dave
spent five seasons at Concordia University
(1988-89 and 1994-96) in Irvine, California,
where the Eagles’ program set a record for
most wins in a season with eight.
Prior to Concordia, Dave spent four
seasons (1977-80) at Azusa Pacific University
(APU) in Azusa, California, as head coach of
the men’s soccer program. Dave was named
SCIAC and NAIA District IV Coach of the Year
twice as he guided the Cougars to a 46-26-5
record and three NAIA playoff appearances in
his four years at APU.
He has also coached Christian collegiate
and pro All-Star teams on over twenty
international soccer ministry trips, including
a 2003 mission’s trip to Sudan where the
Cascade Surge played the Sudanese National
team to a 1-1 tie.
The CEO of Surge International, a soccer
ministry based in Salem and Vienna, Austria,
Dave earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in
social science and physical education from
Azusa Pacific University in 1976, and acquired
his Master of Arts degree in teaching from
the University of La Verne. Dave’s soccer
credentials include a U.S. Soccer “A” Coaching
License, which is the highest license in the
United States and is recognized world-wide.
Dave currently resides in Salem with his
wife, Susan, and their three children (Nathan,
Ryan, & Hayley). Dave and his family currently
attend Morning Star Community Church.
Brett Bentley
Assistant Coach
Brett Bentley begins
his second year as an
assistant to the men’s
program, after playing
and working overseas in
Germany as a missionary
two years ago.
Brett manned the net for the Warriors
for two seasons (2004-05) and saw action in
33 games, including 29 starts. In 2,925-plus
minutes in goal, Brett allowed a combined
77 goals and made 198 saves. Brett’s Goals
Against Average (GAA) ranks in the all-time
Top 10 list career-wise in Warrior men’s soccer
history.
After graduation, Brett played one
summer for the Salem-based Cascade Surge
of the Premier Development League (PDL).
After appearing in one game (65 minutes),
Brett moved to Germany to work play for
Athletes for Christ, a soccer organization that
uses soccer as a ministry tool. Following a year
overseas, Brett return to the states and helped
coach at both the high school and collegiate
levels.
This past summer, Brett returned to
the Surge organization as a player/coach and
appeared in seven games between the pipes.
In 554 minutes played, Brett allowed a mere
six goals to go along with 32 saves. Brett’s
accumulated a team-low GAA of 0.974,
including his lone shutout of the season in a
0-0 tie with the Ogden Outlaws.
Brett is single and currently resides in
2008 Season Summary
Under the tutelage of third-year head
coach Dave Irby, Corban advanced to the
Cascade Collegiate Conference playoffs for the
first time since 2003 after finishing third in the
South Division.
After opening the season with a one-goal
victory over NCAA Division III member George
Fox at the Capital Cup, the Warriors suffered
three straight set backs to NCAA opponents.
Despite being out-scored by seven goals over
a three-game span, Corban battled with
Southern California-based La Verne for 110
minutes before coming away with a scoreless
tie.
With a win-loss record of 1-3-1 heading
into conference play, the Warriors defeated
conference rival Northwest Christian in its
conference opener. After a pair of losses to
North Division opponents, Corban grabbed
a much-needed 1-0 victory over Walla Walla
that sparked a three-game winning streak that
included victories over the Wolves, Cascade,
and first-year program Oregon Tech.
Over the final seven games of the regular
season, Corban won only once when the
Warriors defeated Oregon Tech at home on
Senior Recognition Day to secure its second
playoff berth in the past three seasons.
Despite a season-ending loss to Cascade,
Corban went into the playoffs against the
North Division’s No. 2-seeded Warner Pacific.
Unfortunately, the Knights ended the Warriors’
season in the quarterfinals of the conference
tournament.
Senior defender Daniel Steffen was
the lone Warrior named to the All-CCC team
thanks to his 2 nd team honor.
Fellow senior Fernando Karczeski led
the team in scoring with four goals and one
assist for a total of nine points. Junior Kaleb
Herring took home the team’s Golden Boot
Award, as he dished out a team-leading three
assists.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior
Aaron Franklin played all 1,728-plus minutes
between the pipes for the Warriors. Despite
allowing 33 goals, Franklin registered a
conference-high 107 saves en route to posting
a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 1.72 to rank
fifth all-time in single season performances in
program history.
In 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach,
Irby has accumulated an overall win-loss record
of 86-120-15 that includes an overall mark of
20-29-5 in three seasons at Corban.
Department of Athletics is our objective. Corban athletes and teams are successful
and accomplished today because of the unselfish contributions and efforts of WAA
members. WAA clubs support all of Corban’s 200+ student-athletes in 13 different
programs.
The WAA serves as the umbrella organization for individual team booster
clubs. Membership funds and contributions assist in providing monies for sports
promotion, recruiting, Christian ministry projects, equipment, travel, facility
development and the general operational support of Corban’s collegiate programs.
